That, more or less, is why even good-quality “thick” cotton underwear can’t prevent fart odor molecules from getting through, while mask fabrics do quite a good job of preventing respiratory aerosols and droplets, which carry virus particles, from getting through.
Of course, mask seals aren’t perfect so mask protection isn’t 100%. But they do a hell of a lot better job at filtering droplets than clothing fabrics do at filtering smell molecules.
Fart odor molecules getting through your clothing is like a person running through a “forest” of trees spaced a couple hundred miles apart. They just breeze on through with almost zero impediment.
