Seems likely, but that’s not IMO the problem here. The footage shouldn’t be made public at all. By revealing where all the cameras are, it can help anyone planning the next attack on the Capitol avoid (or plan to disable) them. Bad actors can get that info as easily from MSNBC as they can from Fox.
As near as I can tell, the Speaker is pretty much the Emperor of the House - unless there are specific rules, they can do pretty much what they want (with I guess loss of the chair being the main potential punishment).
At a minimum, it should have been turned over to consortium of outlets. Of course, that probably would have led to Kevin having to rerun for the chair for let the woke media have access.
There’s two problems, one is security, and the other is access to government information.
The security is out of the bag, and cameras will need to be moved.
The other is access. We’ve seen time and time again when one media outlet with an agenda has exclusive access to something, they pull out all the “juicy” bits and leave out any context. Hunter’s laptop and twitter files have been used this way.
So, my concern is that Carlson finds little snippets of video that look nefarious, and airs them without any context, and there is no one to correct that context as he has exclusive access.
I suspect other media outlets have now filed FOI requests for the footage, which will be a little more difficult to refuse.
I see the potential damage to Capitol security is one more of showing where the confidential passages that lead to the secure locations are located. They can change the camera locations easily enough. Showing how and who goes to which secure location is probably a bit more sensitive.
Eventually, I suspect this will blow up in their face. The right-wing blogosphere has been harping for over a year that the Capitol Police invited the rioters inside, unlocked the doors, and (perhaps) even kissed them on the cheeks as they were granted entry. Their excuse has been that the Jan 6 committee refused to show the video of that part. Now, they will have to explain why they aren’t showing the footage that shows it was the FBI was running the show.
Or he goes the other way, and only airs the bits that make the rioters look good. If there’s even a single shot of a rioter helping a cop to their feet, it’ll be front-and-center of all their propaganda.
Fair, I was being a bit flippant on the security angle. It would be better if this footage were kept secret for that reason, but that’s already out of the bag, and whatever changes to security need to be made need to be made whether other media outlets get it or not.
That’s for the people in charge of security to take care of.
What I’m worried about is the propaganda that will come of it.
For me, the question is do they, whoever ‘they’ are, release the entire video now so the whole world can see it before Fox has a chance to spin anything or do they wait until Fox starts airing clips so that releasing the whole video can be considered a reaction and not an instigation.
I assume at this point, the entire video will be released at some point, so might as well air it now. Really take the wind out of Tucker’s sails since he now won’t be able to show it to people that haven’t (had the chance to) seen it already. It’ll take more spinning to convince people of their lies when those people have access to the raw source material.
That’s my thinking for why it would be better if ‘they’ just get the entire thing out to the public. All but the most hardcore Rs will have a hard time watching that and believing that it was just a normal tour group climbing through the windows and pointing guns at the very same people that are wearing AR-15s on their lapels.
I wonder if the footage shows who shot Babbitt? That could be dangerous. Although if it means McCarthy gets sued to Hell and back I might just be for it.
DeSanctimonious wans to triple the size of the Florida state National Guard with a Florida state guard (which I assume would solely be under his control and not the federal government), including air and naval forces, raising the budget from $10 million to over $95 million.
That’s part of it, for sure. But even on this site, I see people talking about him like he’s within some definition of “normal.” He’s just another Trump, willing to do anything to control people. Maybe better table manners, but that remains to be seen.
