Those two groups were originally at odds but have coalesced based on a shared hatred of pretty much everyone with a different skin tone or accent. bear in mind that “half a state” does not put a very clear picture in many people’s heads. The distance between the lower right hand corner of Del Norte county and the upper left hand corner of Fresno county is comparable to the distance between Boston and Baltimore.
