NEW Stupid Republican Idea of the Day (Part 2)

So, another side to his position is ‘No pregnancy, so no evidence of a crime, and thus the abuse can continue’?

Wow, what an incredibly useful concept! So many applications in today’s world!

Sadly.

Question: would this be the same as holographic wrongness?

Wow. He said that? One would think the prime directive would be to get the girl help, not be put through legal matters shes emotionally unequipped for; trial, et. A daughter of my friend is pregnant. When I asked about the dad, her mom told me she’d been raped. Shes 26.

He’s had a lot to say about consent and age.

Can DNA be extracted from aborted embryo/fetus? I would have thought it could be, but I don’t recall hearing about it. Or at least if I have, it’s not often enough that it automatically comes to mind.
If it can be, it seems to me it would be worth considering requiring a DNA sample any time the medical staff suspects rape and possibly in any/all cases involving the pregnancy of a minor.
I can think of some other downsides to that, but I’m not sure if they’d outweigh the advantges.

I can imagine a situation where a husband orders a DNA check done to prove infidelity. but that’s a different situation.

I don’t have a lot of time this morning, but something I think is worth mentioning….

As part of my continual interest in cults, I was recently reviewing some fundamentalist religion homeschooling materials, produced by a group called ATI. They provide materials to not just fundamentalist Baptists, but those of other denominations as well, including Amish.

I was shocked by some of the things they don’t believe in, like democracy and saving for retirement ( they actually don’t believe in retirement, period- they believe God wants you to be a productive worker until you drop dead, and retirement encourages laziness).

But they have a lesson plan on why democracy is bad, the entire formatting is whack, but look at page 55 of this pdf— it’s page 2691 using the page numbers in the book

From the Wisdom Booklet, under a picture of some columns:

The governments of ancient Greece and Rome
were based on the sovereignty of the majority. The
ruins of these civilizations stand today as silent
witnesses to the destructive way of a pure democracy.

If they’re going to base the effectiveness of government on archaeology, then 2-3 thousand years ain’t bad. The only theocracy-based structures still standing I can think of are in Vatican City, but I don’t think the fundies consider Catholicism a model.

“It’s a Republic, not a democracy” is a longstanding referent for this crowd, but yeah, they probably don’t understand what the oh-so revered Founders meant. Just that they preferred the former.

To the Founders “democracy” meant unmediated majority rule which of course that bunch of White Christian Educated Landowners saw as too risky. They got into their heads that they were to be spiritual heirs of the Roman Republic where there was Rule of Law and Rights of Citizens… as long as it was The Right People who were in charge. This position continues to hold among many.

Of course as @Ann_Hedonia points out, the fundies go even further than that, but that one is easier to explain. After all, think about it, their aspiration is to live for eternity as happy serfs of the ultimate Absolute Monarch. Earthly governments get their legitimacy from Divine Mandate not from a consensus.

There are a lot more ancient ruins of, well, pretty much every form of government other than democracy.

Also, at least in Athens, the magnificent buildings were built under democracy, but ruined under authoritarian regimes.

And if it’s a “legitimate rape”, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down. That Og sure does work in mysterious ways.

Absolutely it can, as long as the tissue is collected into the proper medium.

Our lab sends fetal tissue for chromosome analysis not infrequently on spontaneous abortions; there’s no reason it couldn’t be done on elective terminations.

Not sure if it’s more evil or stupid, but Iowa is considering a bill that would bar anyone under 18 from having a social media account. It may just be that a parent’s permission will be needed, but that’s still dumb.

Utah already has such a law.

I dislike kids always having their noses in their phones as much as anyone (and I’m a huge hypocrite for it), but this is ridiculous.

North Dakota legislature votes against providing free lunch to schoolchildren, then votes to increase their own daily meal allowance.

“It was sponsored by 3 Republicans and 1 Democrat in the Republican-controlled body.” Really, lone Democrat? Why not let them sink themselves?

China has a law limiting online gaming. Care to guess how well it’s working? I’m teacing at a high school in Beijing and it’s a nearly constant fight to get the students to stop playing games on their damn devices during class.

Well, once China starts public executions of gamers, they should see a reduction.

He has six children – perhaps they should be checked for signs of molestation.

Check their ages. Any chance the youngest “sister” is actually the daughter of the oldest?
