NEW Stupid Republican Idea of the Day (Part 3)

The process involves the nine-member Supreme Court Nominating Commission, which reviews nominees, and the governor, who makes the appointments from among those nominees approved by the SCNC. Depending on the make-up of the SCNC, the nominees given him could be a case of “that one is Right politically, but the other(s) are far Right”, so I guess I’ll pick the lesser of the evils".

Four of which are appointed by the governor, and the other five are, by law, lawyers elected by other lawyers. Your point still stands, but at least the Commission isn’t a rubber-stamp of the (very far right) Kansas legislature.

Thanks for the correction.

The court does not rule proactively. The issue had to be brought before them. Was the lawyer/office that pursed this issue doing so on behalf of Democrats?

I denounce the effect of the ruling, but it is probably right in an ‘orginalist’ sense. At the time both the US and KS constitutions were written, voting was not consider a universal right. Hell, both documents were amended to allow women the vote, strongly implying that voting is a privilege granted, not an inalienable right.

And again, to be clear, I think the franchise should be as wide as possible.

From the Kansas Reflector (paywalled, so I didn’t link it):

Elisabeth Frost, an attorney representing several voting rights advocacy groups in oral arguments to the Supreme Court

So, yes, probably Democrats, since they are generally in favor of voting rights.

I also found this regarding the ruling:

However, Stegall’s majority opinion says the right to vote wasn’t an unenumerated “natural right” protected by the Kansas Constitution’s Bill of Rights. Instead, the opinion says, “suffrage is universally understood as a political right.”

I’m not smart enough to understand the difference.

Sure you are.

From this link:

In contrast to political rights, which are granted to citizens by their government, natural rights are inherent in individuals because they are human.

So Natural rights would be something like freedom of speech which everyone has everywhere for all time. But voting isn’t like that you can’t have voting without a legal system to define what voting actually means and you can have laws can restrict who does or does not have that right. For example non-citizens can’t vote.

Convict Donald for the last 6 weeks: This judge is so unfair, he won’t let me campaign, I should be campaigning

Convict Donald now that he’s not on trial:

This from Garry Trudeau is too true. (GoComics link)

Was that U supposed to be a K?

Extra crispy, double fries!

I listen to a lot of POTUS radio when on the road (Politics of the United States Sirius 124).

I caught the middle of this, someone was interviewing a senator (?) that was angling for the VP position under Trump (he had a southern accent).

Anywho, he was talking about how Biden had destroyed the country and how Trump was going to win with 300 electoral votes. And that Trump did not say he was going to pardon all the insurrectionists, just some of them. Whatever asshole.

As my infuriation builds, he goes on to say that congress can’t deny electors from a state. Referring to to fake electors that were designed to just jack everything up. You know the people charged with conspiracy, fraud and forgery. After all that’s just all in the days work for republicans - got it.

As politicians do, he side stepped every question the interviewer through at him. If they where in the same room, it would have probably led to blows. I could feel the interviewers frustration coming over the airwaves.

Convict Donald says he never called for Hillary Clinton to be locked up.

And, as he was in the beginning and ever shall be, he’s lying now.

&

“For what she’s done, they should lock her up,” Trump said after the crowd chanted “lock her up” at an October 2016 rally in North Carolina.

&

“‘Lock her up’ is right,” he said at an October 2016 rally in Pennsylvania.

&

“Hillary Clinton has to go to jail, OK? She has to go to jail,” he said in a June 2016 speech in California. “She has to go to jail,” he repeated in an October 2016 speech in Florida. And at a presidential debate in October 2016, after Clinton said, “It’s just awfully good that someone with the temperament of Donald Trump is not in charge of the law in our country,” Trump responded, “Because you’d be in jail.”

&

“You should lock her up, I’ll tell you,” he said at a January 2020 rally in Ohio. At an October 2020 rally in Georgia, after the crowd chanted “lock them up” in relation to the Biden family, Trump said, “You should lock them up. Lock up the Bidens. Lock up Hillary.”

Trump in 2016: “Lock her up!”

Trump in 2024: “I never said, 'Lock her up!”"

“Oh and,” Trump continues, “by the way, we have always been at war with Eastasia.”

“Easteray, Easteray, look, they call it Eastasia. Lotta bad people there, and they’re sending them here. I got a call from a very respected doctor in their Inner Party, he said, sir, I used to have so much work but there’s no work any more because our mental hospitals are empty, we sent them all to Airstrip One, and Crooked Emmanuel Goldstein has been letting them in. And lots of people are saying we should lock him up, but we don’t say that, because we wouldn’t have any crime in Airstrip One if Trump was Big Brother. We just, you know, vroom, push, bing bong bing, boom!, unperson. But it’s doubleplusungood, and it’s doubleplusungood like nobody’s ever seen before, and unless I’m Big Brother you’re probably gonna lose the Battle of Africa.”

And in Euthanasia they speak languages nobody knows!

You just consider yourself lucky I didn’t try to imitate Convict Donald using full Newspeak. “Oldthinkers unbellyfeel MAGA, oldthinkers unbellyfeel MAGA, it’s true, but I love the proles, I love them doubleplusgood like noone’s ever seen.”

@Smapti, you are scary good at that sort of thing. If I didn’t know better, I’d say you were coaching Trump on his speeches and Twuths.

“Euthanasia” gives me an idea. Let’s somehow convince Trump that Euthanasia is a country that is not only emptying its mental hospitals and prisons and is sending those folks to the US. And, it is undercutting the domestic price for US-made steel. How long before he announces in public that he is slapping a 50% import tariff on Euthanasian-made steel?

ETA: And your message just above this one is amazing. Doubleplusgood, even. Trumpisms and Newspeak! Well done!

Wait, @Smapti isn’t channeling trump, but trump is channeling Smapti??! I knew it!
