Once or twice a year we are visited by a small group of Bible-thumpers who either want to convert us or invite us to their church. Invariably, they will ask to leave some reading material. I always tell them that it will go directly to the trash, and that usually is the end of it.
For years, I’d get a weekly pile of supermarket, Walmart, sports store, hardware store, etc. flyers, mixed in with a bunch of Chinese food and pizza menus. They were delivered in a bundle every Thursday or Friday, and the bundle weighed about a pound. I didn’t want them, and they went straight into the recycling bin.
One day, I was working outside when the flyer delivery person showed up. “Here, these are for you,” she said, trying to hand me the bundle. I declined the offer, and said, “I don’t want them. But if you absolutely must deliver flyers to my house, then deliver them there.” And I indicated the recycling bin beside the house.
I had some religious folks show up at my college once and hand out little bibles with green plastic covers. My friend took about 20 of them, ripped off the covers in our room, and glued them all together to play a paladin in a LARP session ( and later Halloween). Excellent for starting conversations. Somehow he became a fundy after graduating.
So she’s a thief. Doesn’t the Bible have something to say about that?
Hah! Do you think she’s actually read the thing for herself?
Absolutely. They worship the book as an idol just like they worship Trump. The problem is they listen to him and don’t pay attention to what the Bible actually says (except, of course, for certain select cruel bits).
Let me guess. Anti-woke folks managed to get rid of it.
My piano teacher years ago in the Monterey area told me about the time he and his best friend were in line at the big book store/cafe in The Barnyard in Carmel. The woman in front of them turned around and started blathering about the menu and wouldn’t stop. Teacher’s best friend finally got a chance to respond and said, “My mother told me not to speak to strangers”.
I remember in Sometimes a Great Notion there is a character who kept a bible by the wooden seat and made a point of reading each page before she used it, no matter how cold it was (and really, in south western Oregon, it mostly does not get terribly cold).
Republicans Melt Down Over Worker Protections for Pregnancy-Related Conditions
(My comment: salient paragraph quoted below.)
In December, a common-sense law that would allow pregnant workers to take bathroom breaks was temporarily stalled by Sen. Thom Tillis (R-N.C.), as Tillis claimed the Pregnant Workers Fairness Act would be weaponized to establish government-funded “abortions on demand.” If only! Now, as the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) on Monday put forth proposed rules for implementing the law, Republicans are melting down again —this time because abortion is among the numerous potential pregnancy-related medical conditions for which employers are to provide accommodations.
