I’m sure there are people out there that believe it’s a fake war designed to make Putin look bad, because everyone knows Ukraine is a “client state” of the Democratic Party.
I haven’t actually heard anyone espouse the first half of that theory (usually they admit there is a war but claim Ukraine is the aggressor) but I’ve heard plenty of right-wingers throw out the “client state” theory.

Yeah. I don’t remember where or when I heard this, but it has stuck with me. People believe the situation they grow up in is normal. To me, that explains a lot of the inanity coming from that family.
I grew up in a very dysfunctional family, and I never thought it was normal. In fact, I used to wonder how normal families did things. Just one data point, of course….

Me too. I wanted one of those families with moms and dads and white picket fences.
I think it’s true in some ways.
People that grow in dysfunctional families don’t usually feel that way, because they’re surrounded by people in outwardly normal families and they know that something’s wrong with their situation.
But people that grow up in insular religious communities, cults, highly authoritarian countries….they absolutely believe that their experiences are normal, because that’s all they see and all they know.
