NEW Stupid Republican Idea of the Day (Part 4)

In a completely different — and yet, somehow similar — vein: back in the Don’t Ask Don’t Tell days, I found myself talking to a young woman who was looking to join the Air Force; she told me that she was in favor of letting gay people serve in the military: enthusiastically explaining that, they’re going to hell anyway, so why not get some use out of them while they’re here?

According to wiki it’s " Waukesha (/ˈwɔːkɪʃɔː/ WAW-ki-shaw)"

I think the point JAQ was making is more that the middle syllable is “kah” not “key”. I don’t hear much of a difference with the accent on the first or last syllable, but when it’s on the middle, and the speaker says wauKEYshaw, it, at least to me, sounds wrong. And I say that knowing plenty of Waukesha residents that pronounce it that way.

It’s amazing how out of touch these people are.

On the other hand I’d rather him do his stupid show than try to administer HHS.

Now you got me cornfused!

I’m not a Wisconsinite, but my firm used to do a lot of business with the WI government. So I’ve dealt with a lot of WI people at the state and county government levels with all their interesting accents and interesting place names. At one time I had most of the county list memorized just from repetition.

IME, the difference in stress between the waw and the shaw is very minor. Both are stressed lots and the kuh/kah/keh/kəh middle syllable is very much destressed. Sometimes the waw is a smidgen stronger than shaw, and other folks say it the other way. But in either case the difference is real subtle.

I am native speaker, and I got confused as to which sylLABel is stressed. Sitting here I say Waukesha stressed on the first or the last and they both sound right. Not that is isn’t a large difference. It’s a small stress.

Sen. Bernie Moreno (R-OH) says his son-in-law, Rep. Max Miller (R-OH), is a psychopath who is not fit for office after Miller declared he’s staying in his reelection campaign despite revelations that he scalded his wife with boiling water, held a gun to her head, and broke their 2-year-old daughter’s collarbone.

Wasn’t that Wausau?

The party of family values!

I’m wondering wherefrom Bernie summoned the integrity to diss Max. That’s really not the R way.

The value is that the man owns his family and can kill or torture (or sell) it at will. Jeebus said it, trump believes it, and that settles it.

Well, there you go. Bernie’s property rights as father trump Max’s as husband.

I’ll second this. When I was growing up, even the obvious bigots in my home town didn’t hate the Jews.

TITUS ANDROMEDON: Gay, Black, and old?! How will I know which box to check on the hate crime form?

Aw, that’s it! I think variations of the original ad mentioned other Wisconsin towns though.

Sounds like the US version of New-fin-land vs. New-found-land. I’ve heard both Newfies and non-Newfies using both pronunciations.

Here in WA, the ballot initiative process, which we used to use for cool stuff like legalizing marijuana and gay marriage, has been co-opted by right wing millionaires who buy their way onto the ballot to push culture war BS.

As such, we get to vote this November on whether 5-year-old girls who want to play t-ball will have to undergo genital inspections.

Obviously a job for the FBI.

Republicans seem to be hell bent on creating a way for them to legally be allowed to examine and inspect the naked bodies of minor children.

I wish this was surprising at this point.

They’re not girls unless Trump himself attests that they are!
