Yes, ageism is real. I’ve dealt with it myself changing careers in my late 40s. I ended up defeating it by starting a company after no one in that industry would hire me. I got real lucky there; not everyone has that option. Nor do they necessarily succeed if they take it. I had a couple of very close calls early on where that could have been a disastrous course to have taken. Luck again.
And yes, getting onto disability not easy, Nor is it a cushy amount of money. Cheap food or low rent, not both, is a decent thumbnail. At the same time there are legions of pre- age 65 people who are on it for rather vague reasons. Heavily concentrated in dead end cities & towns.
Lots of folks in situations similar to yours end up in the informal economy too. Which from the formal employment statistics looks like “retirement”.
My point was solely that the existence of that group of people, and the definitions of “retired” the Feds use for employment statistics, causes a skew versus what an ordinary citizen thinks of when somebody says “average retirement age”.
Bottom line: No, age 61 is not the average age at which Americans settle down to a life of leisure with adequate pension + savings. Instead age 61 is the average age at which Americans either do the above, or get unceremoniously jettisoned from the formal economy whether they want or can afford that or not.
The former is the national dream. The latter is a national tragedy. And the national reality. Sorry to have been unclear.
