“The lead role should be cast with someone who can convincingly play the secret identity.”
Christopher Reeve was good as Clark Kent, and Superman was a good movie. Tobey Maguire was believable as Peter Parker, and Spider-Man worked because of it. Does anyone see Jessica Alba and think “astronaut”? Fantastic Four suffered for it.
I admit I get very emotional over the subject of female warriors/basass characters and their portrayal in film and in video games - basically, I like women who actually look like hardasses and who aren’t too stereotypically “hot” (huge tits and toothpick body.)
Nobody would think of casting Jared Leto or Jake Gyllenhaal (pretty boys) for a role that would be better for Tom Jane or Russell Crowe. When it comes to male badasses, there’s a general understanding that the guy needs to look rugged if he is playing an action hero.
On the other hand, it seems like every ass-kicking-chick movie features an actress who just looks like a “hot chick” who happens to be kicking ass.
Ah, but the current comics version of Wonder Woman doesn’t have a secret identity. Which, thematically, makes sense, for a short time WW got promoted to be the Goddess of Truth, the deception of a secret identity doesn’t seem right for her.
So, depending on the choices Whedon makes writing this thing, it may not be an issue.
Carlao Gugino is a very good call. Rhona Mitra (who was the original Lara Croft model, long before they made two movies with Angelina Jolie) would work as well.
Unfortnately, I don’t think the perfect actress for this role exists, because the perfect actress would be Morena Baccarin’s face melded onto Gina Torres’s physique, with a half-and-half combination of their personalities (at least their Firefly personalities). You’d have the sheer beauty and gentleness of Baccarin with the physicality and strength of will of Torres. I don’t think this hypothetical woman exists except in my imagination.
Anybody suggest China from wrestling fame yet? She certainly would be physically up to the roll, and I would have no problem picturing her as an amazon. pics
I have no idea if she can act, but how hard can it be to act in a superhero movie anyways.
Exactly. There must be ten ass-kicking chick movies coming out this year, and they will flop one after another. WW needs something to make it stand out, and the image of a rugged, muscley woman (China) instead of some toothpick with a pretty face would certainly do that. She’s supposed to be an amazon, dammit.
Course it will never happen, but if I was incharge of hollywood, they’d try something different for a change.
As a wrestling fan, I can answer this one: No. She’s a truly hideous actress, even by the limited standards of womens professional wrestling. Don’t even joke about something like that.
That’s not exactly true. No-one ever thought of Keanu Reeves as an action star before he bulked up for Speed; and have you seen Hugh Jackman without his Wolverine hair? Pure pretty-boy.
I also wanted to point out the Sara Michelle Geller is actually a brunette, she lightened her hair for Buffy. She can play physical roles and is already part of the Joss Whedon group. While I like SMG alot I would prefer someone else for this role. Gina Torres would rock.
I like Sandra Bullock, and she has had experience doing a “superwoman” role–well before her movie career, she played a bionically enhanced woman in the TV Movie Bionic Showdown, also starring bionic icons Lee Majors and Lindsay Wagner, reprising their roles from their earlier series. But I agree she doesn’t seem right for the part. I find her very attractive, but her looks are “quirky”.
The main problem these days is finding a young known actress who is not too scrawny. Almost all of the suggestons (ie. Evie Lilly, SMG, etc.) are toothpicks, and can’t carry off the “Amazonian” nature of WW. In retrospect, even Lynda Carter had noodle arms.
That said, one presumes that a young scrawny actress might be able to bulk up for the role. If so, Ana Faris is one of the better suggestions. I’ve only seen her do comedy, but she’s clearly a gifted actress and I bet if she hit the weights a bit she could pull it off. She might be a little too WASPy though - I like the idea that our WW look something like the exotic island princess she’s supposed to be. Even with dyed hair, Ms. Faris looks about as white as they come.
Maybe Emily Deschanel? Zoe’s a great actress but presents too much an air of innocence about her. Her older sister shows more edge.
