NFL 2021 Week 18 and Life

Two questions:

Is this the first time there have ever been three scores in overtime?

Is this the first time the tying play scored with 0:00 showing on the clock in regulation and the winning play scored with 0:00 in overtime?

Oh no, I’m sure it’s not. Getting a FG in OT isn’t that hard or unusual. If it was a record I’m sure they’d have been chatting about that.

I’m sure I’ve seen it before, I can’t remember when. Google is failing me.

Bear in mind that the current regular-season overtime rule – that if the team which has initial possession only scores a field goal, the other team still gets a possession – has only been in place for 10 seasons (starting in 2012). But, even so, the first “three scores in an OT” happened in the first season when it was possible, in a game between the Texans and Jaguars.

I remember when it was put in place. But that’s still a lot of games for it to happen.

Cowboys-Niners rivalry renewed!..first playoff meeting in 26 years.

Not a fan of the 17 game schedule, but there’s no turning back now. And the one silver lining is it allows the Ravens to become the first team ever to start 8-3 and end the season with a losing record. Even when they were 8-3 I was yelling from the mountaintops “they’re actually not very good!”

A tweet would be easier and would reach more people, but whatever works for you.

What an effing game! After that sack on 3rd and 1, it’s like the Niners suddenly remembered they own these Lambs.

I’m intrigued to see if the Ravens offer Lamar Jackson a (likely massive) long term deal this off season as he enters the last year of his rookie contract. He has an MVP award, and waiting will likely only up his price (see Dak Prescott), but I have serious questions with his injury risk, his passing skills, and whether he can adjust to the defenses are playing him now. Personally, I’d take the risk and see what next year brings, but it will be fun to see how the Ravens handle it.

I can’t really complain too hard about the Colts missing the playoffs; if not for the fact that we blew at least three double-digit leads this season, we’d be comfortably standing atop the AFC.

  1. The Rams/49ers game was fabulous!! The 49ers showed more heart and grit than the Rams, but this isn’t a surprise. The Rams have a penchant for losing big games.

  2. Speaking of losing big games, Arizona punked yet again at home in a key game. They are who we thought they were.

  3. Nagy and Pace are gone. Glory be to God!

I think he’ll be okay. Jackson seems like Cam Newton but a better passer (not great but competent) and not as reckless. I don’t think any running QB is going to have the longevity of a traditional QB, but I expect Jackson has at least a few more good years.

In Patriots news that will likely make everyone happy, they lost convincingly to the Dolphins with a sloppy game, uninspired offense, and run-porous defense. They’ve had some inspired performances this season, but the offense can probably best be described as “lackluster.” I think it’s 90% that they are one and done in the playoffs. The Bills are definitely the better team, strange weather Buffalo game notwithstanding. I like Mac Jones and I think he’s done extremely well for a rookie, but unless the defense spots them a couple turnovers with short fields/defensive TDs, they won’t keep up with the Bills.

I was expecting to see some commentary here about that horrendous first-half pass interference call against the Chargers that set up the Raiders up for a TD. I don’t understand how you can call PI when the ball lands 15-20 yards away from the nearest receiver. Even without contact, there’s no way that receiver has anywhere close to a chance of catching that ball.

Telekinesis is some serious pass interference.

There was a really questionable DPI call against the Texans late in the first half which set up the Titans’ 3rd touchdown. At that point, it didn’t look like it would make any difference. But the final score was 28-25, so it turned out to be a huge call, particularly because the pass was intercepted.

Both the defender and the receiver were looking back over their shoulders for the ball when they collided. By rule, if the defender (or receiver) is playing the ball, it cannot be pass interference.

It was absolutely not interference, but there were enough other crazy things in that game that the PI call isn’t getting much conversation.

Yes, the NFL rulebook clearly states that it’s not pass interference if there is:

Contact that would normally be considered pass interference, but the pass is clearly uncatchable by the involved players

That’s rule 8, section 5, Article 3, clause c, in case anybody’s wondering.

I think that could potentially be “illegal contact” depending on circumstances…

But certainly not pass interference. And illegal contact is a 5 yard penalty and automatic first down, as opposed to allowing the offense to move the ball all the way down the field to where the pass interference occurred.

Perhaps, but I don’t think so. It was either DPI or it was nothing. And it should have been nothing.
