Nfl draft 2018

I think you may be a little too strict on what qualifies as a “successful” pick. I would certainly consider Poe, Jenkins and Tannehill successful picks. They may have been a little over drafted, but that’s not the same thing as a miss. Part of the calculus on a first rounder is the floor and getting a steady contributor is a solid B/B- for a 1st rounder.

I used your My Guy, Your Guy rubric for 2012, so I might well give it a look see.

That’s yeoman’s work right there.

Gilmore signed a 5-year $65M deal last offseason. He had a few bumps in Buffalo, but definitely a hit. Stays healthy.

Jones was really productive with the Pats and got traded for some bizarre reason and became great in Arizona. Stays healthy.

DeCastro is an All-Pro. Stays healthy.

Floyd was pretty solid early in his career before the booze got him. Not an outright bust, but damn close.

Kuechly is a All-Pro. Stays healthy.

Barron is a contributor on a good defense and was the subject of a trade that netted a couple picks. Definitely didn’t live up to his draft position but not an outright bust either. Stays healthy.

Poe you already covered. I’d be more generous than you on calling this a useful pick, but he didn’t hit his ceiling. Stays healthy.

We agreed on a few of these guys like Adams, Jenkins and Wright. Jenkins was has been pretty good, the others I nailed.

Kirkpatrick has been a late bloomer but has grown into a okay player. Definitely didn’t meet expectations but not a bust.

Upshaw looks to be on his way out of the league. Couldn’t find the field for the Falcons the last couple years.

Martin has been very up and down, but was really good early. Seems like the ride is about over though.

Hightower is another Patriot and has been a regular starter but certainly isn’t a star. Not a bust but below expectations.

Perry has been really disappointing either due to injury or just being slow to adapt to the league. Seems like it might finally be coming together so not a total bust.

Irvin has been good but not great. I suppose this is a useful pick, certainly is worse than Jones so it’s a minor win for me.

Allen is another guy who found his way to the Pats and has been predictably frustrating. Always the #2 TE, never the #1. Plus injury issues. Not a bust but glad the Bears didn’t end up with him.

McClellin…fuck me. Read the thread to see how I felt about that pick. Made it to the Pats too and has actually stuck longer than one would expect, but yeah, total bust.

So, I’m saying I was the draft whisperer in 2012.

This is the best case I think you can make for him. Everyone will certainly be watching.

I put almost no stock in the “his teammates loved him, he owned the locker room” stories. They are way too easy to fabricate and its so cliched. Also, every locker room and every culture is unique. The stuff that works in one doesn’t work in another. In college the coach can make a guy an alpha by proclamation, in the NFL it’s organic.

College programs are bubbles that protect their guys…and most often if you get a whiff of smoke about a player there’s a steaming tire fire underneath. It’s rare that there’s 1 “isolated” indecent.

Browns took a guard. I wonder if that means they’re going to try to move Bitonio to LT. They’ve got pretty good guards already. Guess there wasn’t a good tackle there.

Edit: NFL’s front page says that the brown drafted OG Corbett but the news story says OT Corbett.

The Bears were set at center with Whitehair. Does drafting Daniels mean they’re going to move Whitehair back to guard or is Daniels going to play guard?

I like the player but I don’t love the fit. Wonder what the heck is wrong with Landry that no one is drafting him.

And The Lions jump up and take Kerryon Wayyy early.
On the plus side, however, Burleson is, comfortingly, still completely nuts.

25, 41 – whatever it takes. Plus, trading up means they most likely won’t be picking during the Jets-Preds game! Double bonus! I’m almost giddy! (But that’s probably because of the lack of sleep.)

David Akers just skewered the 'Boys fans…

Bears trade up to get a WR. Anthony Miller who is a heck of a prospect, but small and an inside guy. I would have predicted they target a guy like Chark who fills a more obvious need. Still, love the pick, not entirely convinced we needed to trade up to get him.

I’d lay money that Josh Jackson is a better pro than Jaire Alexander. Pains me to say it, nice fit for the Packers.

Schneider makes deals with Green Bay frequently because he’s from that organization; he started his career there as a scout before moving on to a couple other teams, then returned to GB as an assistant to the GM (top personnel aide) before becoming Director of Football Operations. He only left when he had the chance to become a GM himself in Seattle.

If you look at almost every season since he got to Seattle there’s always some trade between the teams. Players move back and forth between them, even when not traded. Last year Eddie Lacey went to Seattle from GB, this year Jimmy Graham went to GB from Seattle. I’m sure that’s not coincidental.

John reportedly still has strong ties with people there.

I’m pretty okay with what Seattle did. At first I had a “Huh?” moment, like I’m sure most people did. I knew they needed to improve the run game but I didn’t think that’s how they’d do it. But there are interesting things about Penny… He’s got basically everything Seattle wanted in a back (except pass blocking because at San Diego he never needed to). He’s the guy they almost picked at 18, but gambled and traded back in the hope that he’d still be available at 27 (and he was). They got a 3rd round pick out of that move (and traded a 7th for a 6th) so to them got something for nothing.

Apparently they immediately received trade offers from a couple teams who wanted Penny, so they weren’t the only team who saw his value. The mock drafts apparently misjudged him, probably because he’s not from a major school. Seattle went from a run game powerhouse to getting only a single running TD from a RB last year, so he’s a welcome add if he works out.

I’m disappointed Seattle doesn’t have a 2nd round pick yet, but who knows, they are usually good at getting deals done.

They’d have one if they didn’t give away their 1st for peanuts.

This third round is moving at a snails pace compared to the second.

They moved back 9 spots, that’s it. They gave away nothing, they still had a 1st round pick. They gained a 3rd, when they had no 3rd round pick going into the draft. They did all right.

I’m a little torn - he’s an outstanding player, and he was obviously great value at that pick. His one “ding” was a slightly slow 40 time, and I probably put less faith in Underwear League numbers than most. His tape shows his physicality, IQ, and hands. He’s incredible at putting himself in position to make a play, and then making it when it’s time.
But he played for the Hawkeyes, so screw 'im.
Green Bay’s secondary (in my wildly optimistic view) has an interesting look. There’s two wily old vets in House and Williams, and a bunch of young guns. Kevin King has one outside spot locked down, and Jackson has the skillset to take over the other, especially if they excel in Pettine’s press man style. I’m a little worried about Jackson’s hips, but that’s the only thing I can knock on him, given the HHCD help over the top that we can count on. Alexander, being a bit smaller, can fit well in the slot, which has become more equal with the big outside guys in recent years - teams are moving wideouts all over the field, it’s no longer a two big fast guys outside and one smaller shifty dude in the slot - players like OBJ are spending more and more time there, with more room to work laterally and more options beyond “run fast until the ball comes” or “run fast until you turn around and the ball’s there”. The entire route tree is wide open inside, though those crosses still have a tendency to get 'sploded by a lingering linebacker. If Alexander plays up to his potential and draft pick, and Jackson outplays him, I’ll be very happy; at least for four years and we realize we can’t re-sign them both.

The Browns take Florida wide receiver Antonio Callaway in the 4rth. Generally I don’t mind taking risks on talented players with character issues in mid to late rounds but this one doesn’t seem like a good gamble. Either Josh Gordon will help this kid stay off the weed or Callaway might help Josh get perma banned.

Our luck has to change eventually. Right ???

Woot! Shaquem Griffin is a Seahawk!

I wonder if this is the first time that two twins have played on the same team in the NFL?

Of course this is going to be really confusing to announcers. There are now two “Shaq” Griffins on the defense. I wonder what the jerseys will say…?

Apparently when the Griffins played together in college they went by SM Griffin and SL Griffin. They’ll probably just do that again in the NFL.

I wanted Shaquem Griffin on the Bears. Didn’t make sense considering the guys we drafted at the same position earlier but would have been cool to watch. I suppose him suiting up with his brother is about the best outcome he could have hoped for. If he’d have come to the Bears I’d have insisted on the nickname the Winter Soldier, and I swear that’s not the only reason I wanted him…

I’m surprised EQ St. Brown is still on the board…and as I type it he goes to the Packers. Like that pick, fuckers.

Most likely just “Griffin” and “Griffin.” Having different names on jerseys for players with the same last name stopped being mandatory in the NFL in 2007, when Kyle Brady joined the Patriots. Last year, the Seahawks had Paul and Sheldon Richardson, who both had just “Richardson” on the back of their jersey.

I like the first three players the Titans got a lot, but I’m not sure that trading up so many times and ending up with 4 picks total is a sustainable strategy in the long run. I was surprised by the Luke Falk pick, but I guess he should be better than Blaine Gabbert in the long run.
