NFL Preseason Discussion

The Browns trade CB Justin Gilbert to the Steelers of all people for a reported 2018 6th rounder. Surprising in a number of ways.

First the Browns get anything, anything at all for the 8th over all pick in 2014 and the Steelers, after seeing him up close twice a year were the ones to take him.

Seems like a kinda decent kid, just (yet another) complete waste of a first round pick from Cleveland. I wish him well when he isn’t playing us.

Freedom’s just another word for nothing left to lose…

How’s Minnie’s O-line this year?

Gilbert is one of the worst players I’ve ever seen take the field. If the Steelers somehow get use out of him I’m going to be pissed.

Didn’t watch him at all, but the Bears were desperate enough to claim K’waun Williams so I’m sort of left to wonder if Gilbert would have been at all useful.

Since they cut him in the first place, he’s probably headed for the practice squad.

More damning is that, according to nfl dot com’s cuts tracker, they only had 78 players in training camp. They only had to cut three people to get down to 75.

Reports that the Packers are going to trade or cut Josh Sitton. If that’s the case the Bears absolutely have to find a way to get him in onto their roster. They can afford him and the O Line is in dire straits. Unfortunately, Sitton will probably have better offers from contenders.

K’wuan is way better. I don’t understand why he was cut - there was some sort of drama about not paying his bonuses or something. There was a feud there.

He’s hurt. The Bears ended up flunking him on his physical, bone spurs in the ankle. The conflict between the Browns and Williams is confusing. Sounds like Williams hid the injury initially, but then it sounds like the Browns thought he should be able to play without surgery since the placed him on non-injured Waivers. All in all, sounds like a bunch of mis-management.

Still, a small part of me thinks both the Bears and Browns might regret not just keeping him, putting him on IR and getting him healthy. Seems like he can play and that his odds of a full recovery ahead of next season is good. Maybe it’ll just be cheaper to sign him as a FA next offseason, but then you’re competing.

Har har har. From Rotoworld:

Cowboys sign Mark Sanchez to be Dak’s caddy

Cardinals cut Matt Barkley even though Drew Stanton sucks donkey balls. I hope there’s a plan behind this, not comfortable with Palmer with no one but Stanton behind him.

Sam Bradford has failed with two teams and still keeps getting opportunities to start?

Bears release kicker Robbie Gould, last player left from 2006 Super Bowl

Bears just signed Josh Sitton for 3 years, $21M. Absolutely terrific news.

I have no problem with them cutting Gould. Guy has struggled the last few years and he’s making a ton of money.

I has sad. The Packers couldn’t afford to keep him past this year (TJ Lang, JC Tretter, Eddie Lacy, and others are free agents after this year), but I was hoping he’d be a part of the team for a Super Bowl run this year. Plus, it makes the Bears questionable offensive line better, especially at LG. I do think that having very good guards is a luxury not a necessity, so I don’t mind the Bears spending so many resources on Long and Sitton, but I don’t like that the Bears are now a better team.

The Packers are stuck throwing either Don Barclay, who is, when he’s at his best, just about average, or Lane Taylor, who is a pass blocker and won’t get you much in the run game, out there. At least until Jason Spriggs is ready, if they feel like he’s able to move inside.

The Bears get better at LG, but also probably get better at C too. Since Grasu went down they were relying on the terrible Ted Larsen playing out of position there. In theory Whitehair will be a better option at C, but we’ll see how he transitions.

What the hell were the packers thinking? Sitton has been the cornerstone of their offensive line for ever. They could have got substantial trade value if it was just a money thing.

It’s baffling. Sitton’s deal with the Bears is pretty close annually to what he was scheduled to earn with the Packers. He’s not that old. He’s playing well. He’s healthy. Waiving a guy doesn’t give you anything in compensatory picks. It’s clear that weren’t going to extend him, which is something I can understand, and they probably want to hand out some extensions now, so I get the cap reasons. But, I will never believe that they couldn’t get a trade done, even for a 6th or 7th rounder.

I almost wonder if the Packers are so insular that they just don’t focus on trades and FAs at this time.

Whatever, I enjoy the Packers stepping on their dicks.

Back/ankle problems haven’t pulled him out of games, but have definitely limited his effectiveness. Rumors of a locker room problem (mostly because it’s the only thing that makes any damn sense). And $6.5 million rollover cap space to sign all the guys that are up for extensions next year. A veteran on the trading block right before cuts is going to get exactly no bites. Why pay for something when you can get it free tomorrow?

And I have zero issues with the Bears getting better. Aside from the Thanksgiving Meltdown, the rivalry games haven’t even been fun to watch for the last few years. Give me a good team to beat on mercilessly, rather than the JV squad.

And the Packers are insular because it works. They don’t have big free agency flops, they win, and even a down season without a starting quarterback for half of it ends in a division championship. They’ve obviously got this whole draft and develop thing down. Why fix something that ain’t broke?

Because you wouldn’t get him free tomorrow - the teams with waiver priority would. Given the number of teams around the league with cap room, there would have been at least a half-dozen claiming him.

Well, let’s not get too crazy. The Packers have had unprecedented luxury in having a quality QB starting for them for 25 years in a row, a boon unimaginable for any other team. Plus they’ve played in a shit division for most of those 25 years, so winning the division is kind of expected.

In terms of measuring success by championships, the Packers have two trophies in the last 47 years. (And the rest of the division combines for a grand total of one.)
