Colin Cowherd was saying basically the same thing on the radio today. I don’t think RGIII has a Cam Newton-style slump - his accuracy is way better, for one thing - but NFL defenses always catch up to gimmick offenses in a year or two.

I’ve only seen a bit of him, but he reminds me Torrey Smith. One of those guys who excels going deep, and coaches hope will develop into an all around threat. I’m not enamoured with his sub .500 catch rate or his negative DVOA, but as you said, he’s raw.

I’m trying to figure out how they’d rate him as negative DVOA. How do they calculate receiver DVOA? His yards per target must be pretty great, so what are they evaluating, his routes when he’s not the target?

His yards per catch aren’t that great for a guy who only runs downfield - 17.4. He’s got the worst catch percentage of anyone in the top 75 for targets except Denarius Moore.

I’m trying to figure out how they’d rate him as negative DVOA. How do they calculate receiver DVOA? His yards per target must be pretty great, so what are they evaluating, his routes when he’s not the target?

I was looking at stats from earlier in the year. Currently his DVOA is now positive, and his catch rate is above 50%, and he’s rated as the 41st best WR. Sorry about that. Here is the latest I could find

Hearing vague rumblings that Rashard Mendenhall won’t be re-signed by the Steelers. That’s worrying, since I am relying on him as a fantasy keeper prospect.

I don’t get to watch complete games of the Redskins either, so this was a first. And I like a lot of what I’ve seen from RGIII. But watching the entire game, I was a bit surprised by just how little of “traditional quarterbacking” RGIII was asked to do. He doesn’t attempt many passes at all (he’s currently 23rd in attempts behind Tannehill, Sanchez, and others) and the offense is clearly tailored to fit his college game. Those aren’t necessarily bad things (I’m not sure they’re the recipe for long term success), and RGIII looks like the real deal doing them, but I wasn’t aware just how much the offense was tailored to him and his skill running the football. It will be interesting to see how it all works out.

You raise good points, and I really hope they work things out in the off season. Washington has labored so long with mediocre and awful QBs, that a lot of the love and hype is simply happiness at the sight of a talented quarterback, the first since, I dunno, Joe Theismann? RG3 does strike me as a pretty intelligent guy, and he’s already adjusted his play, learning to slide on running plays after he got knocked out for a week. As a fan I hope he can do the traditional QB role, because defenses will adjust.

Washington has labored so long with mediocre and awful QBs, that a lot of the love and hype is simply happiness at the sight of a talented quarterback, the first since, I dunno, Joe Theismann? RG3 does strike me as a pretty intelligent guy, and he’s already adjusted his play, learning to slide on running plays after he got knocked out for a week. As a fan I hope he can do the traditional QB role, because defenses will adjust.

RG3 is so good, he can even make the Wizards win!
