It was an illegal block - once he signaled fair catch but declined to catch the ball, he can’t block anyone on the kicking team until the ball is touched. Presumably this is so he can’t try to prevent them from downing the ball before it rolls into the endzone.
NFL playing 4 London games next year. 2 at Wembley and 2 at new Totenham stadium
Mahomes is exciting but hey… how about that Kareem Hunt? Last week against Cincy, he had a run where he broke a tackle, then hurdled over a defender, then dragged a couple more defenders with him into the end zone. And just in case you missed it last week, he did the exact same thing again this week against Denver.
Yes, I understood the illegal block part of the penalty. That was pretty cut and dried. I’m questioning why he wasn’t flagged for a more serious helmet-to-helmet hit on essentially an unsuspecting opponent (who wasn’t expecting him to block). I’m a Pats fan, but that seemed like the refs missed a pretty serious personal foul.
Yeah, it was just a flat-out dirty play. Not a mistake, that was head-butting. And I used to like Edelman. ![]()
Signaling a fair catch then going MMA on a guy running in to down the ball is totally classless.
If they were getting beat and he was frustrated that’s one thing but against the Bills in a game where you could almost nap to a win? Why do that on something as low importance as a punt return?
I’m expecting a fine from the NFL.
As a Chiefs fan who lives in a different NFL city, I’m loving the amount of coverage that the team gets this season. (We got a lot last year as well, which was great.) I’m curious as to how the Mahomes-mania is viewed by the rest of the country. Are y’all getting sick of it? Is it approaching Tebow levels of annoyance?
I don’t view it that way, probably in part because Mahomes is playing very, very well. The worship of Tebow, particularly during his days in the NFL, became annoying not only because of its ubiquity, but because his fans would have to contort their arguments to defend his frequently poor play (“it doesn’t matter, he gets it done when it counts!” “he just wins!”).
IIRC, during Tebow’s one “good” season in the NFL (with the Broncos in 2011), he led, I think, five fourth-quarter comebacks, but those were often necessitated by him playing horribly for the first three quarters (and also made possible by the fact that the Broncos had the best rushing offense in the league).
Also, while Mahomes certainly gets a lot of press, there are a lot of other storylines going on in the NFL that are also getting coverage (the Rams, Drew Brees, etc.) In 2011, coverage seemed to be all Tebow, all the time; that was the season that the Packers started out 13-0, and it seemed like the NFL news was “Green Bay is still undefeated…but WHAT ABOUT THAT TEBOW?!”
I’m in the Seattle area, and I don’t see a lot of oversaturation from Mahomes hype. He’s a good QB who’s getting his due as a new, young, exciting player leading a good team toward the top of his conference. Not annoying at all, I think he’s good for the league and the times I’ve watched him play he seems fun to watch.
ETA: I like seeing good new QBs. Wentz and Watson were also fun young QBs who unfortunately had great seasons cut short by ACL tears. I hope Mahomes avoids the injury bug.
Mahomes-mania doesn’t bother me cause he is legit tearing up the league, in amazing fashion.
A few weeks ago I was thinking: “lets calm down on the Sam Darnold hysteria”, but thankfully as he has been more and more mediocre, the buzz around him has calmed way down. Same with Baker Mayfield to a lesser extent, but he wasn’t getting the over the top praise as Darnold. The Sean “GENIUS” McVay schtick is getting old fast though.
He gone (to the Ravens)
I’m not surprised at all. After not talking to the press after the game on Sunday, Montgomery opened up yesterday (after the critical article was published), complaining about his character being called into question by his teammates, and the fact that the story had gone public. As per yesterday’s Green Bay Press-Gazette article:
When I read that article, I thought to myself, “he’s already realized he’s leaving the team.”
I love how Montgomery is so defensive and unapologetic about what he did. His character was being questioned for a very good reason; it’s questionable.
He was traded for a 2020 7th round pick so he was practically given away. I don’t blame Green Bay one bit either.
Trade deadline summary:
Golden Tate to Eagles for 2019 3rd rounder
Demaryius Thomas, 2019 7th rounder to Texans for 2019 4th & 7th rounders
Ty Montgomery to Ravens for 2020 7th rounder
Dante Fowler, Jr. to Rams for 2019 3rd & 2020 5th rounders
HaHa Clinton-Dix to Redskins for 2019 4th rounder
Pretty happy to have Haha and Tate out of the division.
Yeah, me too.
I understand why Montgomery was shipped out after what happened on Sunday. I thought he was a decent RB though and the Packers needed help there (I mean technically, with Rodgers, they’ll always be pass-first). I’m not sure why Ha Ha Clinton-Dix was traded – he was their starting safety and his stats looked pretty decent. I’m not following the Packers enough to know otherwise.
The Bears still have 2 games against the Lions coming up, so I’m OK with Tate being traded as well, but that’s another – wouldn’t the Lions need him more than the Eagles?
I’d liked Montgomery up until now. As someone pointed out in last week’s thread, his willingness to learn a new position two seasons ago, when the Packers suffered a rash of injuries to their running backs, was a testament to being a team player, and helped the team salvage its season.
In this case, he clearly felt like his teammates had thrown him under the bus (and, you know, maybe they did). But, if there was any truth to the accusations, he could have owned them and apologized for his actions. He chose not to.
This reminds me of something one of the announcers in the NE-BUF game said when Patterson was getting some carries, about him being selfless. He’s like the 4th or 5th receiver. You think he has a problem getting more touches?
I give Montgomery some credit for the athletic ability to convert to RB, but the chance to more than triple his touches isn’t exactly an altruistic accomplishment. He was, at best, 3rd on the WR depth chart.
I thought they should cut him after that bone-headed move, so hey, free 7th Rd pick.
Hopefully McCarthy will now realize that Aaron Jones is by far the best ball carrier on the team and give him more run.
He is quite good, and the Packers will miss him. But he’s in the last year of his contract, and the Packers weren’t going to pay him what he would get as a free agent, so he was done in Green Bay. A 4th round pick for 8 games isn’t ideal, especially when you’re in the playoff hunt, but they think it’s worth it.
They “threw him under the bus” because he deserved the ire of his teammates and the fans of the team once the story broke that after being removed from an offensive series and throwing a tantrum on the sidelines over it, he then super selfishly ignores a command from his HC to kneel the kick return, which was the obvious correct play: get the ball safely into the hands of #12, the owner of the highest comeback win percentage currently, with essentially two timeouts (2 minute warning plus a regular timeout) with just over two minutes to play.
That would have been an eternity for Aaron Rodgers…and they only needed a FG to win, too. I think the Pack is trending upwards and barring that bone-headed decision by Montgomery, Rodgers likely would have instrumented a drive that resulted in handing the league’s sole undefeated team a loss last Sunday.
Don’t get me wrong – I completely agree with everything you’ve posted above. With Rodgers looking more like his old self on Sunday, it certainly felt like he had more than enough time to get a score.
We’re assuming that Michael Silver’s report of what happened (based on information from unnamed Packers coaches and players) is accurate, though I have no reason to believe that it’s not accurate. Rodgers’ reaction on the sidelines after the fumble certainly looked more like anger than disappointment or disbelief (though, of course, we can’t know for sure), which would be consistent with the story, as well.
All signs pointed to HHCD not being 100% happy in GB, and looking towards free agency. Gutekunst most likely wasn’t ready to pay what HaHa was asking, and traded him away to at least get a pick for it. I’m afraid that it puts the Pack in rebuild mode, but I still have faith in the team. The rookies are looking amazing, and Rodgers is usually Rodgers. Given how bloody the NFCN is right now, there’s still a very good chance they make the playoffs, especially if the team can continue with how they played for the first 58 minutes against LA. That’s a hell of a football team, and having it within striking distance even after all the fuck ups says a lot for THIS one moving forward, IF things gel together. Going to New England this week will tell us a lot.
