Apparently, Trump’s people see her as the new threat, and they’ve decided to go after her. I’ll be curious to see how she responds, even though criticizing him is probably too little too late at this stage. She’s really in a can’t-win situation (can’t win without pushing back, but that will lose her valuable MAGA votes), and somehow I don’t see her accepting 2nd place in the same way Vivek would were he chosen.
Though I don’t thirst after her biers even she wouldn’t drink anything Trump pours out.
Oh boy, the text of the link says it all!
Yeah, what a dunce. And isn’t ironic that Haley is taking so much shit for this (as she absolutely should) while Trump says unhinged shit every day and the GOP and media just yawn?
An article I was reading on Talking Points Memo this morning mentioned a poll showing her only three or four points behind Trump in NH. (Not going to bother posting a link to the article because that’s not what it was about - it was more of an op-ed about why it doesn’t matter and Trump is going to steamroll over her anyway on the way to the nomination.) But yeah I can see Trump freaking out that anyone is polling anywhere close to him.
Because Trump saying unhinged shit is a dog bites man story – nothing new to see here, move along, move along.
You are 100% correct, but it shouldn’t be that way. Now would be the time for the media to step back and say, “Hey, we’ve been going light on this asshole for the past few years, but, actually, talking like this is NOT acceptable!”
How well did “OMG look at the insane thing Trump said NOW” coverage work towards alerting people to the danger in 2016? “Conventional wisdom” is that it only gave him free publicity.
Nikki is blowing a great opportunity. She’s not directly challenging Trump and the unstable things he did in office.
I’m definitely disappointed at her fence-sitting.
As already noted in this thread (and in the ~25,000* Trump threads on this board over the last eight years), those “unstable things” that Trump says and does are either (a) not believed by his supporters to be true (i.e., “the lamestream media makes that stuff up!”), or (b) are seen as a positive, and not unstable at all.
To win the nomination, Haley (or any GOP candidate) would somehow need to win over large numbers of GOP voters who adore Trump. Challenging or attacking Trump by turning his own words and actions against him is unlikely to appeal to those voters.
Given that Trump is extremely aggressively attempting to return to office, and that he has no qualms about going after anyone whom he sees as a threat to that goal, I simply have a hard time seeing how any GOP challenger has an actual path to the nomination, barring Trump being legally barred from the office, or him suffering a medical crisis.
*- A dramatically large number for humor purposes, but hell, there’ve been a lot of Trump threads here.
I almost entirely agree with you but she can win over whatever is left of the center or moderate republicans who want anyone other than Trump. There are probably fewer of them than the crazies
This is the problem. Sure, she could win over the non-MAGAt GOP vote, and conservative-leaning independents (and that seems to be the approach that Christie is taking). It’s likely that there’s simply not enough of those left, compared to the Trump fanatics, to give an actual path to winning the nomination.
It’s long past the time when folks shouldn’t need to be reminded that it ain’t the party of your grandfather father older brother and it hasn’t been for a while.
It’s gone from ‘the Party of Lincoln’ to ‘the party of Newt’ to ‘the Trumpublican Party’.
And there doesn’t seem to be very much desire to change any of that.
Yeah, the Republicans in my circle have gone from “DeSantis and Haley are sane alternatives to Trump” to “They are MSM darlings/RINOs being promoted to damage Trump” in the last year.
Very discouraging. It really is far more a personality cult than a healthy political party these days.
These days? :cough: Ronaldus Magnus (of the Family Reagan, of course) :cough:
And you can throw FDR and JFK in there too.
This goes 'way beyond anything any previous POTUS had.
