Just a video of Trump saying “I don’t think it’s going to have much of an impact but you know, I’d say slavery is sort of the obvious answer as opposed to about three paragraphs of bullshit”. And the link just goes to twitter, is that bad?
(I’m on a public wifi at an elementary school; the warning is probably coming from there.)
Describing the link, what it says, when you post it is not too much to ask, jesus jumping garcia.
We have a whole thread in the Pit that’s largely discussing such a thing…
Or post a bare link so that Discourse can render the preview for everyone like so.
Gotta say, that was good on whoever his speechwriter was, and why not, on him for not bolloxing up the line. It’s in a way the gag about the Simpsons citizenship test: just say ‘slavery’ and move the hell on.
Which I really can’t blame for being wary of links to Xwitter.
I still remember a comedian saying, after his resignation: “You’ve got to feel sorry for Tricky Dick. From leader of the free world to just a guy walking the beach at San Clemente… with his metal detector.”
Apparently, Haley is still trying to have her Trump cake and eat it too. She’s edging close to criticizing him, but not enough to lose appeal to MAGA voters. I’m not sure this wobbly path will work out well for her.
Good article on Slate about Haley’s phoniness and why it’s not working for her now:
Now Trump’s starting up “birther” claims against Haley. I’m sure she still supports him as a Presidential candidate. It’s nothing personal, after all.
One of the things that helped trump get started was that somehow his unabashed bullshit with no filters felt “genuine” to the audience even as it was patently false.
The public, or at least a significant segment of it, has tired of being told vague evasive platitudes. Somehow unequivocal loud BS is a happy contrast to that.
I don’t think this has yet been mentioned, but Nikki is moving up in the polls. She’s still behind Trump, but is ahead of Ronnie in both Iowa and NH. One poll shows her within 7 points of Trump in NH.

As we have seen in the past, one or two strong showings in early primaries can go a long way for a candidate. I don’t much like Haley, but considering the alternative…
That might be the most Presidential thing he’s ever said.
Absolutely great point. I too would like a president who can avoid “politician speak” while actually telling the truth.
Pretty much!
It kind of was genuine and funny as hell until it became real. He broke the unwritten rules because he didn’t give a fuck. The other candidates were relatively hands off because they didn’t want to be left out in the cold should one of the other people win. By the time they realized what was happening, it was too late. He caught lightning in a bottle.
The “trick” with speaking unfiltered is that it’s real easy to tell your audience what they want to hear as long as nobody else can credibly tell them you’re wrong / lying.
If Trump had been speaking to his white supremacist audience and told then the unfiltered truth in his bold bluff manner that Black Americans are exactly as American as they are and the Whites just need to get over themselves, that probably would not have gone down as well as what he did say.
So instead he told them that only White Americans are actual Americans, the crowd roared their approval, and nobody that crowd would listen to existed to tell them they’d been lied to.
Demagoguery only works inside an information monopoly. The “genius” of the whole RW apparatus is building the propaganda walls first, then suborning the susceptible portion of the public who’re voluntarily clustering inside those walls. They’re not leaving until somebody blows up those walls.
Your observations are sharp, sir!
I disagree, especially in this day and age there is no information monopoly in politics. It works if your target is information adverse. When President Trump came out as a homophobe it would not have been hard to look up 6 months prior when Candidate Trump was against NC’s bathroom law saying that it doesn’t matter what bathroom people use. But of course they didn’t look it up.
There’s not a great deal of difference in behavior between people, like those in NK, who cannot obtain alternate versions of the news, and those, like Faux’s audience, who refuse to obtain alternate versions of the news. In each case the news they get totally shapes their perception of reality.
You’re right the set-up is different. But the outcome is the same. You don’t need a big fence around your yard if you can persuade your dog to stay in the yard without it.
Starting with roughly Limbaugh, it became fun (and very comfortable) to stay in the RW propaganda yard rather than exploring the larger world of complex ambiguous news & uncomfortable facts. Now 25 years and one generation hence, it’s unclear to me what steps could be taken to get the kids to go outside the yard and play out there instead.
But I’m all ears if anyone has any bright ideas.
