When you are using such a carefully curated line as a balance bar, the slightest deviation will send you falling off the tightrope.
Um, sorry about that, I participated in the hijack too.
Reciting the same line over and over worked out so well for Marco Rubio in 2016.
Well, it’s really bad when you do it in response to someone saying that you do it…
I’m Marco Rubio and I can remember my lines.
MANCHESTER, N.H. — Nikki Haley questioned whether Donald Trump is mentally able to serve as president after he mixed her up with Rep. Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., at a Friday-night rally.
Addressing supporters in Keene, New Hampshire, Saturday, Haley called out Trump’s remarks while arguing that the presidential contest should not be a showdown between two men near or above 80 years old.
“We see that [President Joe] Biden has changed so much in two years,” Haley said. “But last night, Trump is at a rally and he’s going on and on mentioning me multiple times as to why I didn’t take security during the Capitol riots. Why didn’t I handle Jan. 6 better? I wasn’t even in D.C. on Jan. 6. I wasn’t in office then.”
DeSantis is out, and maybe Don’s VP
Now that the field has narrowed down to just trump and Haley, we might want a thread dedicated to the 2024 Republican primary to consolidate all of the race news. What do you think?
Good idea
Yes, it is time.
Do you mean “news” as in a MPSIMS breaking news thread and the accompanying rules, or do you mean news and learned SDMB commentary as in a P&E thread?
Whichever, since it’s your idea I propose you kick it off and cite it in this thread and the soon to be moribund DeSantis thread(s) as a wrap-up
We might want to wait until after Tuesday’s New Hampshire primary. If Haley gets trounced in that one, the Republican primary campaign will be over.
I believe she will drop out Wednesday.
Yes, let’s have a new primary thread if Haley doesn’t drop out.
And… I think she won’t!
Why? The reason is simple: she will be hoping that he is dead / incapacitated / incarcerated by the time the convention rolls around and she can pick up the pieces. She’s now the only one left who can credibly do so.
It is obvious, with almost no primary election results in, that Trump will be the Republican candidate.
I didn’t do it! It is not my fault! But that is what is going to happen.
Primaries not mattering this year may be an incentive for parties to re-consider how they go about selecting their candidates. But I haven’t fully fleshed out my thinking on this yet.
I think a lot will come down to whether she can convince enough donors (particularly enough big-money donors) to continue to support her campaign. If she runs out of money, she’ll drop out, even if she would rather continue.
That’s a good idea. I disagree that she’ll drop out voluntarily, though she might if she runs out of money. Chances of trump being disqualified by the Supreme Court, chances of guilty verdicts before the nomination, chances he’ll drop dead from a buildup of cheeseburgers and spite… if she’s the last man standing she’ll win by default at that point, no? It would be folly to concede when there are multiple avenues to become the runner up who serves when the winner is disqualified.
Remember, the other candidates haven’t quit, they’ve merely “suspended” their campaigns. (If they actually quit, they have to liquidate their campaign funds.) If by whatever means Trump should be removed from the race, then everyone else can just unsuspend themselves and start over again.
Which means DeSantis would be in the lead with 9 delegates from Iowa to Haley’s 8 and Ramaswamy’s 3.
Good point!
I don’t think there will be any financial reason for her to drop out/suspend. She is already on all the primary ballots and need only do the bare minimum.
She is also the closet thing to an anti-Trump candidate among the field and will, presumably, do better the worse Trump does, whereas Ron and Vivek will not, presumably, have that advantage.
I think it would go to the party national meeting if Trump disappeared.
