Nikki Haley announces US presidential run for 2024 (Not Trump please)

Yeah, she’s been pretty skilled heretofore at trying to be all things to all people via clever, equivocating phrasing, but she’s started to get busted for this kind of thing. On the slavery issue, she got busted so hard, even Trump ended up criticizing here and saying the truth (very rare!).

That was awesome.

Seconded! LMFAO.

I found a Transcript!

[Smart Ass ]: All right, here’s your last question. Were embryos the cause of the Civil War?

[Haley]: Actually, there were numerous causes. Aside from the obvious schism between the abortionists and the anti-abortionists, there were economic factors, both domestic and inter…

[Smart Ass]: Wait, wait… just say embryos.

[Haley]: Embryos it is, sir.

LOL. If she thought this would get her out of the conversation without pissing off either the wingnuts or the “independents,” she would say exactly this!

Somebody should ask her why the Confederate embryo crossed the road.

To get away from the woke immigrant chicken (duck?) chasing it?

Nikki Haley is trailing Trump 60%-40% with 89% of the vote reported in the South Carolina Republican primary. That’s a pretty poor showing for a former two-term governor of the state. And that 40% will avail her next to nothing – SC awards the majority of its 50 delegates to the statewide vote winner, and the remaining delegates based on winning in congressional districts. Haley may be able to win the vote in the 1st Congressional District, which would net her a grand total of 3 delegates.

Which, interestingly enough, is still slightly better than she polled.

It doesn’t matter - she was never, ever going to beat Trump. She’s just in there to either A.) try to pick the pieces if he goes down before the election of B.) position herself for a few years down the road.

If 40% of voting Republicans in South Carolina prefer someone other than Trump, that’s good news for Joe Biden.

Very much so, IMHO. Trump’s support has shrunk enough to make a determinative difference in November. And again: it’s worth it to Haley’s donors for her to stay in the race and continue to let the primary results make this point over and over again.

It is, but SC is an open primary in which anyone could participate who had not voted in the earlier Democratic primary. I’ll take it, however!

Jim Geraghty said it well in the Washington Post (paywalled):

But Haley was never likely to win [South Carolina] or the Republican nomination. She and her staff may not want to see her campaign more as a protest against Trump than as a viable big for the nomination, but that’s what it is — and there’s nothing wrong with that.

In the general election, one of two things will happen. Either Trump will win 270 electoral votes, or he will fall short for a second time to Biden, at a time when even most Democratssee the incumbent as too old to run again. If Biden manages to prevail next fall, Haley and her fans will be able to say to Trump and his MAGA crowd, “See, we warned you.” There’s no downside for Haley to keep sounding that alarm in the coming weeks

I just happened to turn on CNN last night as she came out to speak, and so watched most of it. And all I was thinking was, “Come on Republicans, get your heads out of your asses!” The contrast between her and Trump was so stark. She was clear, focused, and determined. We all know that, policy-wise, she’ll be just as bad as Trump, but my god, as a person, she’s so, so much better. How can so few Republicans see that?!?

I’m worried that Trump might win in November because he’s such a pile of shit, but I don’t think he has good odds to win. But Haley? I’d worry about her winning, because I think she’d actually beat Biden, just on the “He’s so old” issue.

The Rs that are susceptible to trump’s spell are totally on his side and only his side. In a funny sense, they’re the true RINOs, since they’re actually for trump’s personal brand only, not the rest of R-ism. If trump had formed a third MAGA party in 2016 they’d be registered to that one today, not as Rs.

The Rs that are less (or not at all) susceptible to trump’s spell recognize that nobody can beat the Ds if the MAGAts stay home. Which they will do if trump isn’t the R nominee. So they hold their nose, vote for trump in the primary and in the general and in each case easily convince themselves the alternative is far, far worse.

It really doesn’t get too much deeper than that.

I feel like a 40% result is a good thing. Not that it advances her in the count to date but it shows that the big Selfish Selfie is not the magic they think he is. Only the intensely commited voters showed up for this vote.
I hope she does well in a couple of states on Super Tuesday.
Does anyone think it would help if you announced a VP before the next round of primaries? Who would the best choice? ( I found someone I would hate California rep Doug LaMalfa but would appeal to the Republicans)

I think that if Haley announced a VP candidate who Republicans could support, it could only help her.

Good luck finding a Republican with any base of support in the GOP willing to set fire to his or her career just so that they can be the nominal VP choice of a candidate with no-chance at the nomination.

I voted yesterday on the R side and picked Haley. Inna picked “uncommitted” (which was an option, lol).

You know, if it’s a bunch of Democrats voting in the primary for Haley, that dismantles my thought above about the results being good for Biden.
