The third season of Nip/Tuck started yesterday evening. After rewatching all of the episodes from seasons 1 & 2 over the last month, I was eager for some new material.
My thoughts on this episode are below:
We find out that Christian was raped by the carver. He seems to struggle with this for a while…right up until the hot vice detective climbs on top of him. To top it off, Kimber seems to have no problem joining in the festivities. He goes from proposing marriage to Kimber to getting it on with the vice detective to inviting Kimber to participate in a three-way. Quite a swing for one episode! I thought that Christian’s wound from the carver attack would look a lot worse than it did as well.
Julia finally wants a divorce. I was actually happy when her mother suggested that she hire a high power divorce lawyer. I think that Sean deserves to be taken to the cleaners for cheating, acting like an ass, etc…
Mama Boone. My oh my, what a large woman! I had a feeling she was going to die as soon as we learned she was kinda nice. I was certain she was going to die as soon as Sean started to hold her hand. I would have bet money on her death when her husband was not allowed to see her when she was in the operating room. Sure enough, she died. I thought that story line was a little bit sappy, but still a little bit sad.
Matt still looks like a diseased Michael Jackson/monkey hybrid.
All in all, I thought that the episode was very entertaining. I thought that perhaps they were trying too hard at times to live up to the Nip/Tuck reputation for being racy & daring, but for the most part it worked. I am anxious to see what will happen this season with the carver, as well as with Christian getting over his attack.
You put a spoiler warning in the OP, so I’m not going to box.
I was entertained up until the three-way. I don’t like the British “detective” character, and I really don’t like the actress who played her. Talk about a frozen expression – does she have nerve damage or something? She looked just like she did in the last thing I saw her in, whatever that was.
I loved Momma. She said all the right things. If Sean hadn’t been naturally sympathetic anyway, as a doctor who has seen all kinds of hideous, she would have hooked him. What a sweetheart. It might have been more interesting if she’d been a stupid whiny bitch, but I’m glad she wasn’t.
I did feel like they were hitting us over the head with the connection between Momma’s predicament and Christian and Sean not being able to move on. It was a little much that they made Sean and Christian say the words after Momma died, like the writers wanted to make sure we got it.
NPR had a short interview with the people who do the prosthetics, and they said it’s going to be an excellent season.
Do you know who played Momma? I’d like to know how much of her was fake. I remember reading something about an obese woman whose skin fused to her couch, but I don’t remember if she died or if anyone was able to help her.
I thought it was pretty good, but I hate how FX spoils future episodes by letting you know that characters are fine by showing them in previews.
Obviously, we knew that Christian would live, but they could have at least given us a tiny bit of suspense regarding his carver situation.
I still think Sean and Julia will get back together. It feels wrong for them to be with other people, even though they have both obviously had feelings for other people.
I hate Julia’s mom. She is such a c_nt. Sure, Sean has acted badly, but that doesn’t give Julia a right to half of his business that he’s worked his butt off for. And she can’t blame him for holding her back in her own career. Having a family was her own choice. It’s not as if Sean made her do it. And let’s be honest, Julia has been somewhat in love with Christian this whole time. She’s been as bad as Sean has, just on different levels.
The Mama scenario was disturbing.
I don’t care for the detective lady. She’s ok, but not nearly as sexy as Kimber or Ava or any number of othe women who have been on the show. It didn’t surprise me that Kimber jumped right in. She’ll do anything to please Christian.
I can’t wait to see what happens next week and if they’ll explain how Matt gets his ass beaten. I hate to see him bruised and stuff, but it sure is nice to see him without the damn mullet.
For those who don’t think Rhona Mitra is a smokin’ hottie–give her time. She had great sexual chemistry on The Practice/Boston Legal, and any show that promises more three-ways with her is a development well worth watching… (though I’ll admit she hasn’t had a chance to show great range as an actress yet).
I have to admit I was a bit disappointed with this episode. First of all, the Christian being dead part was cheesy and obviously a dream, and because it wasn’t real, I felt like they took too much time focusing on it and dragging it out. Also, last season ended with the “life coach’s” son killing himself in her arms, so I expected this season to pick up with that storyline. When you end a season with somewhat of a cliff-hanger, that storyline should at least be mentioned in the premier of the next season. And the editing was choppy – yes, I know it was intentional, but they didn’t do a good job pulling it off IMO, it just felt amateurish. All-in-all, I give this episode a C-.
Overall, I enjoyed it. I totally fell for the Christian-is-dead thing at the beginning - mostly because it went on for so long. I don’t think I would continue watching the show if either of the main characters got bumped off, though. They both add quite a bit.
The whole thing with the lady detective seemed a little too… forced, strange, belligerent.
My husband thinks the Carver is a woman (the use of the paralyzing drug, the dislike of beautiful people, etc.). After this episode, if it is a woman, she uses a strap-on… but then why use a condom?
A question about the previews shown…
Does it show Christian getting it on with a corpse, or was that another guy?
Is that what that shiny bulbous thing was? A condom? (Yeah, I’m that old.) I thought it was a lucite strap-on and was going to google strap-ons, see if I could find one like it. Decided I’d better not.
Any thoughts on who the carver might be? I wonder if it is going to be someone that we have seen previously on Nip/Tuck, or if it will be some random person that we are introduced to for the first time when the mask is taken off?
Some people have suggested that it might be Dr. Bobolit, but I don’t think that he has it in him to carve people up like that. Perhaps it will be a former patient with a grudge? I am very curious…
The whole “carver” angle is a stretch for me. The show has enough interesting characters and story-line potential to keep going without resorting to something as contrived as a masked, knife-weilding lunatic.
I have maintained all along that The Carver will turn out to be Ava. So far I haven’t seen anything that would change that.
To refute that, Mrs. Dooku said “But Christian knew right away she wasn’t a woman when they had sex - wouldn’t he recognize that it was a strap-on?”
Not so, sez I. First, he was totally paralized, and second, his experience at getting raped anally probably comes in second to his experience with the vagina.
I say Ava.
As for the episode itself, I was pretty disappointed. I already knew all about the real-life woman that was fused to the couch, so there were no surprises there. All the “let’s get divorced” stuff was just filler, since Julia at the very end seemed like she didn’t want it. All that “I’ll fight for you; OK you’re right, but now I want to fight for you!” has been done to death.
The only good part was Christian’s line: “I’m back, baby!”
I’m getting in on this a little late. I TiVoed the premire and just now had time to sit down and watch it. I was getting a little antsy knowing the we’ve got a new ep coming up tonite!
First, one random rant. Get me FX in HD already damnit. Half of my favorite shows are on FX and the quality of the picture on the plasma suffers if it’s not in HD. Shows like Nip/Tuck and Rescue Me with all their dark scenes as especially touchy. You’d think with all the success they’ve been having they’d do whatever it took to get carried in HD.
Loved the episode, I agree with many of you guys who said it wasn’t the most deftly directed program. But nonetheless, the storyline was excellent and I just enjoy the characters so much. I felt the lines Christian and Sean said, repeating Mama’s comments, were certainly a bit hokey, but it didn’t ruin things for me. Plus what can I say, Christian is one cool cat. “I’m back!” Threesomes are the new black. Love his style.
The English Investigator/Profiler is a fairly clumbsy way to introduce a new character/love interest. On the whole it’s just too damn far fetched, but the end result makes it worthwhile to me. I think she’s frigging hot. (I’m like the only person in America that doesn’t think Kimber is screaming hot) It’s always nice to see hot half-naked women on TV.
I’m pretty thoroughly convinced that Dr. Costa is the Carver. Although I certainly could easily believe that it’s Sean’s crazy, annoying son. At the very least it’s be fun to see him get his comeuppance.
