Nope, I won’t be renewing. The money isn’t the issue, in fact two years ago I would have paid significantly more to stay as a member.

I renewed a few days ago.
I very nearly didn’t. The place is not what it was a year or two ago. There’s much more bile here now - some sections of the community seem to think that being intelligent and hard-nosed requires the ability to spew insults and hatred in all directions, otherwise you are accused of engaging in “lovefests” (if you are so much as vaguely friendly or polite to someone). There is a cowardly, vicarious, snitching element here that is relatively new.
That said, there is no reason why that won’t cycle through and change, and I admit a lot of it is down to me rather than the board. I know that I go through my own cycles of troughs and peaks with this place. At the moment I’m hitting the bottom of it, but I know that will change, so I pushed myself to renew. If I didn’t, I’d regret it six or twelve months down the track. This place has been good to me over time, and I think it’s worth the few bucks to keep my account alive. I do still like the SDMB.
Also I run a (tiny) messageboard that is still (at least nominally) a spin-off board from this one, and it would be a bit odd if I was no longer a Doper. Not only that, but I quietly enjoy grabbing a few people who were hoping I would leave, and rubbing their noses in it.
The American aspect of it doesn’t bother me either way. Sure I get annoyed sometimes when people post like there is nowhere else on the planet, but generally I’ve found that only knowing about America through television, this place is a fascinating insight into the way the US actually ticks. I’ve had quite a few preconceptions shattered.
I will.
Though I too would like to see a more international crowd on this board (or an international board similar to this one)
