Non-heterosexual women of the SDMB: A Poll

Be glad you don’t know! It refers to the pattern of lesbians moving in together ASAP after having sex… hence the following joke:

Q: What does a lesbian bring to a second date?

A: The U-haul (substitute “moving van”, “rent-a-truck”, “trailer” or other appropriate furniture-carrying vehicle)
Max (I’ve never done the U-haul thing… never ever ever ever… oh, ok maybe once  :smack: hehehe )

Oh. Hm. That does sound somewhat familiar… er, um…

I’m glad this thread was revived. Lots of new faces to watch for.

Una

I guess since I resisted the temptation of posting the first time this came around, I’d better do it now.

  1. What do you identify as?
    Bisexual

  2. How short is your hair?
I like it chin-length, but it’s down to my shoulders right now.

  3. Is it a natural color?
    Yep. My own dark blond

  4. If you play sports, what are they?

Not unless I’m kissing my girlfriend at a club or something.

  6. Do you shave your legs?
    Yep

  7. Your head? Your armpits?
I’ve always toyed with the notion of shaving my head, but it’s an odd shape…and I do shave my pits.

  8. What about the queer female community annoys you?
The idea that a bisexual is only a lesbian that’s afraid to come all the way out. Grrr.

  9. What is your idea of dressing up?
Depends. If I’m out dancing I’ll wear my leather pants or occasionally a leather or jean miniskirt with a cute top. Otherwise it’s khakis and a sweater or something. I only wear dresses to weddings.

  10. Do you wear makeup?
    Only when I dress up.

  11. What are “stereotypically lesbian” things that you do/wear/eat? (Expansive question, I know, but work with me. ;))
Ummm…I almost exclusively wear my Wal-Mart imitation Birks.

  12. What queer/ friendly female recording artists do you listen to?
Tori Amos, Indigo Girls, Paula Cole

  13. Any thoughts on the butch-femme thing?

    Not very

  18. Describe your dating patterns. (U-Haul, serial monogamy, whatever.)
    A definite “whatever”

  19. Did you/do you date men? How’s that working for you?
I did and I still do. In fact, I am dating the man I hope to spend the rest of my life with.

  20. Any thoughts on good and bad representations of queer woman in popular culture?
I agree with the majority of the posters. Porn made for guys, Ellen, Anne Heche = Bad

and in closing,

  1. Tell me a coming out story. Doesn’t have to be yours. Funny, tragic, whatever.
Nothing too special. Told my boyfriend. He referred me to his ex who’s bi. Then I began telling my friends. Now i’m openly bi. If it comes up, I tell the truth.

I hadn’t answered before, as I wasn’t sure if people wanted to hear the ramblings of a confused bi-sexual. But, everyone seems pretty darn nice.

  1. What do you identify as?
    Slightly Confused Bi-sexual.

I like both men and women, but tend to be attracted to personality more than anything else…though I find female bodies to be much more touchable and attractive than male bodies. I’m with a wonderful man, but sometimes I feel that something is ‘missing’ sexually for me with him. He knows this as I am incapable of hiding feelings, and he knows I find women attractive but I think it gets a little confusing for him sometimes… He likes the idea of a threesome, but I don’t think he likes the idea that I might be as or more interested in the woman. But this could just be my interpretation and interpretation is not always correct.
2) How short is your hair?
Just touches the top of my bra in the back.
3) Is it a natural color?
Yes, red/auburn.
4) If you play sports, what are they?
Computer games don’t count? I like to run. shrugs
5) Do people look at you and think you are terribly terribly gay?
Lol, not.
6) Do you shave your legs?
Yep.
7) Your head? Your armpits?
Head, no. Pits, yes.
8) What about the queer female community annoys you?
I was a part of this type of a group during college. I’m easy going and didn’t really get bothered, but then I’m also a daydreamer and may have missed some things.
9) What is your idea of dressing up?
Slim pants and a silky, sheer or tight shirt. If it’s summer time and I don’t have to wear the dreaded panty-hose to protect my legs from the Minnesotan winds, I wear short skirts.
10) Do you wear makeup?
Mascara daily, I’d have no color on my lashes as a natural red head otherwise. I also have shimmery lipstick that I like, but not much else on a regular basis.
11) What are “stereotypically lesbian” things that you do/wear/eat? (Expansive question, I know, but work with me. )
I’ve been a vegetarian and may be heading back that way.
12) What queer/ friendly female recording artists do you listen to?
I don’t really know which artist I’m listening to on the radio to know this…
13) Any thoughts on the butch-femme thing?
Whatever makes people happy is good for me.
14) Were you a repressed Catholic schoolgirl?
No.
15) What do you feel are three very important queer woman issues?
Just more equality and acceptance for everyone…
16) How good is your gaydar?
I don’t even have gaydar, let alone bad gaydar.
17) How “incestuous” is your dating scene?
Date? The woman I was closest to in this way (and we never fully ‘realized’ our relationship) is now married and far away, there have been no others.
18) Describe your dating patterns. (U-Haul, serial monogamy, whatever.)
Serious, my actions have always been careful and thoughtful, but I have to fight my streak that just wants to have fun flings.
19) Did you/do you date men? How’s that working for you?
Yup. I’m in a very serious relationship (we just got engaged), he’s very nice.
20) Any thoughts on good and bad representations of queer woman in popular culture?
Does annoying porn count?

and in closing,

  1. Tell me a coming out story. Doesn’t have to be yours. Funny, tragic, whatever
My extended family thought I was a lesbian because I was so close to above-mentioned female. They liked it because they thought I’d be able to bring a ‘unique perspective’ to the family conversations. It probably was good I hadn’t known they thought this. I was a rather shy college girl at the time and would have been very embarrassed at them talking about me at all much less my sexual identity.
  1. I’m bi-sexual, but I must admit I have no experience with a girl (with the exception of a little middle school romping with my best friend)
  2. My hair’s about halfway down my back, maybe a little longer.
  3. Yes, my hair’s kept naturally between blonde and brunette (no one can tell what it really is)
  4. I play basketball and soccer mainly, but i did track in high school.
  5. Almost no one I know has a clue I’m bi, and everyone I’ve told has been UNBELIEVABLY shocked (except my boyfriend).
  6. I shave my legs when I wear shorts (not bloody often).
  7. My armpits are almost always clean, but I could NEVER shave my head!!!
  8. Absolutely nothing buts me about the queer community- but I’m very new to it.
  9. I don’t dress up often, but I like brightly colored tops or dresses
  10. I only wear make-up when I’m going somewhere special
  11. I don’t think I have any stereotypic gay qualities. Then again, I’m new!
  12. I’ve never really seperated music into gay-straight either.
13)I’m not exactly butch, but I do lift weights (c’mon i’m an athlete) and I can beat up most guys I know. You just couldn’t tell by looking at me.
  13. Never went to catholic school - public school in western NY.
  14. I think there are really only two queer issues: Lesbian marriage should be legally like hetero-marriage, and lesbians shouldn’t always be seen as either softball players or porn stars!
  15. I have ABSOLUTELY NO gaydar!
  16. Like I said before, I’ve never had any experiences with another girl.
  17. I’m a long haul girl - but I’ve never lived with anyone (hell, I’m only 20!)
  18. I currently date men, and I have a wonderfully brilliant bf of a year.
  19. I was watching Ellen last night for the first time. Used to think she was just looking for attention - now I think she’s great! I just hate how everytime you think of a girl who likes girls, they’re either butch with short hair and a deep voice… or they’re a porn star. At least that’s the feeling I get from my brother and his stupid frat bro’s!

and in closing,

  1. Well, I haven’t quite come out yet. The hardest thing was telling my best friend for 15 years, “Remember from like 3-6th grade how we’d do kinda weird stuff? I mean, we didn’t know what sex was, but we … did stuff? Well, I think I might try that with a girl again sometime.”
  1. What do you identify as?

Lesbian.

  1. How short is your hair?

Jaw-length bob.

  1. Is it a natural color?

Yup.

  1. If you play sports, what are they?

No sports per se, but I do practice kickboxing, kai chi, Pilates, and swimming at least once a week, and work out at the gym.

  1. Do people look at you and think you are terribly terribly gay?

Nope.

  1. Do you shave your legs?

Yes. Every day, because of the shorts I wear in said exercise activities.

  1. Your head? Your armpits?

Head no, armpits yes.

  1. What about the queer female community annoys you?

So far, nothing. Oh, I got one - the bloody high prices in dyke bars.

  1. What is your idea of dressing up?

Knee-high boots, ultra-short skirt, spaghetti-strap top. And I still get told I look classy! What is up with that?

  1. Do you wear makeup?

Yep, every day.

  1. What are “stereotypically lesbian” things that you do/wear/eat? (Expansive question, I know, but work with me. )

I take it you don’t mean going to gay bars or reading gay magazines, or posting to threads like this. Um. I don’t have cats, am not a vegetarian, don’t wear DM’s, or anything else that comes to mind. Not because I’m avoiding them, I must point out, I just don’t happen to do them.

  1. What queer/ friendly female recording artists do you listen to?

Melissa Etheridge. I’ve never even heard a single Indigo Girls song, but trust me, I’m still a lesbian.

  1. Any thoughts on the butch-femme thing?

I think that it’s not limited to the lesbian community (ie, I know a lot of butch straight girls too), it’s just that it’s there that it has a role.

  1. Were you a repressed Catholic schoolgirl?

Nope. I do have a Catholic family, but I’m not Catholic myself.

  1. What do you feel are three very important queer woman issues?

[ul][li]Parenting rights[]Marriage rights[]Less expensive drinks at clubs![/ul][/li]
16) How good is your gaydar?

Pretty good so far!

  1. How “incestuous” is your dating scene?

God, it’s like Alabama but with better music.

  1. Describe your dating patterns. (U-Haul, serial monogamy, whatever.)

Just flings so far. I’m fairly new to the scene (about five months).

  1. Did you/do you date men? How’s that working for you?

I did, some went better than others, but I wouldn’t date a man again.

  1. Any thoughts on good and bad representations of queer woman in popular culture?

In the UK, there have been a lot of documentaries recently featuring the laddish type of woman who drinks all the time, sleeps around, might wear make-up, etc. These documentaries always seem to feature the same women - they pick them up at the Candy Bar (I know some of them too). To be honest, that’s what my crowd might seem like at first glance.

and in closing,

  1. Tell me a coming out story. Doesn’t have to be yours. Funny, tragic, whatever.

Someone at my evening class saw my rainbow badge and started to read out the very bad joke on it. (Studies show that ten out of ten lesbians prefer women - referring to the way men seem to find lesbians a turn-on). His face fell so comically, like an avalanche in slow motion, and there was a long silence for a while. Fortunately, we were in the pub at the time, and all a bit merry, so we just ended up talking about the gay scene and which famous women I found hot. I haven’t had a negative reaction yet.

  1. What do you identify as?
    straight, but often misidentified

  2. How short is your hair?
People usually ask “How long is your hair?” About three feet. Past my hips.

  3. Is it a natural color?
Do you know how much money it would cost to dye three feet of thick hair?

  4. If you play sports, what are they?
I was once forced to take tennis lessons…

  5. Do people look at you and think you are terribly terribly gay?
    Sometimes, yes.

  6. Do you shave your legs?
Not since my senior prom four years ago.

  7. Your head? Your armpits?
    No. Yes.

  8. What about the queer female community annoys you?
Not much. Perhaps the disdainful looks I occasionally get when I tell people I’m straight.

  9. What is your idea of dressing up?
    Skirt, shirt, docs.

  10. Do you wear makeup?
Not if it can possibly be avoided.

  11. What are “stereotypically lesbian” things that you do/wear/eat? (Expansive question, I know, but work with me. )
I’m a scenic carpenter. This means I spend lots of time working with men, in big boots and baggy pants with lots of pockets. I know how to use any number of power tools and I’m not generally concerned with how I look as much as not getting anything caught in the circ saw. Apparently I tend to look butch. Also, I’ve been a vegetarian for ten years.

  12. What queer/ friendly female recording artists do you listen to?
    Ani, Indigo Girls, Tori, Dar.

  13. Any thoughts on the butch-femme thing?
    I don’t get it.

  14. Were you a repressed Catholic schoolgirl?
    Nope

  15. What do you feel are three very important queer woman issues?
I’m not really informed enought to answer

  16. How good is your gaydar?
    Pretty good, actually.

  17. How “incestuous” is your dating scene?
Very. There was a saying at my college. “Hall booty is bad booty, Mod booty is worse, and theatre booty is inevitable.” I was in the theatre department.

  18. Describe your dating patterns. (U-Haul, serial monogamy, whatever.)
monogamy with periods of celibacy. (U-Haul? Please define?)

  19. Did you/do you date men? How’s that working for you?
I do. It’s working pretty well at the moment.

  20. Any thoughts on good and bad representations of queer woman in popular culture?
I have to agree about Tara and Willow. Other than that, I can’t really think of any.

  21. Tell me a coming out story. Doesn’t have to be yours. Funny, tragic, whatever.
    umm
    can’t think of any…
