Numfar! Do the dance of Lost 1.12:Whatever the Case May Be

Yes, Locke is now a part of whatever it is that makes this island special. But, he needs to remember the Monkey’s Paw Rule. Namely: wish fulfillment is a two edged sword.

Speculation based on the 9¾ second preview for next week:

Locke can walk. Whatever happened to him in the previous world to make crippled, we don’t know. Could be physical, could be mental, could even have been the island reaching out to manipulate him (and the others) for however long it took to bring them all here.

Locke has looked into the eye of the island (metaphor for the TCM or even something deeper?) and says it is beautiful. How is it beautiful? It has given him (or given back) the ability to walk, has made him into a mighty hunter (perhaps a Nimrod reference?*).

But, it has fostered an attitude of distrust. Jack didn’t Locke in the search for Spock, I mean, Claire. Michael doesn’t trust him in regards to Walt. Boone odesn’t agree with him and Locke now becomes a hunter of men, like Nimrod, by taking advantage of and over powering Boone. Because he feels threatened? Monkey’s Paw Rule!!!

  • the writers do seem to be mixing in Biblical mysticism in ways both subtle and gross. If I’m right about this, it’s an awesome thing to see. If wrong, I need to quit mixing Sci-Fi and Bible reading on the same nights.

Yup, it did.

I think it was meant to specifically refer to Finding Nemo – I mean, look at how well it fits thematically. Why was necessary to find Nemo? He was lost.

On another forum someone pointed out that the French dubbed version of Finding Nemo had “Beyond the Sea” dubbed in French. Which is different because “Beyond the Sea” is not a literal translation of “La Mer”, it basically has it’s own words and the meanings are different but the tune is the same. So a translation of “Beyond the Sea” to French would not result in “La Mer”.

That said I think this is just a research oversight and nothing significant, however there may be significance in the the lyrics of either “La Mer” or “Beyond the Sea”.

Or the fish movie could just be a red herring.

Who puts a keepsake like a toy plane in a safe deposit box? There is more to that plane then memories. Either something small is inside (diamonds, some weapon grade plutoninum:) ) or the plane is a key to something larger. Like you need the plane to open something, or give it to someone as a token to get something.

I just dont buy that she went thru all that trouble just for a keepsake!

Abolone! They did it just for the halibut. Caught us in their net, they did. Now, we are hooked. For it is a whale of a tale!

What’s really amusing me right now is that Ellen Degeneres is on my TV as we speak.

Hope she doesn’t fall off and hurt herself.

Can anyone post a link to a decent English translation of “La Mer” (not “Beyond the Sea”)? My French ain’t good enough - not even as good as Paris Hilton’s - I mean, Shannon’s. Translation sites do bad, bad things to it.

You know I was just thinking, if they don’t show someone shaving pretty soon I’m going to have to start believing the island is magic.

On a related note, and because I’m superficial this way, did anyone else notice, in the early part of the episode, as they segued to hobbit moping on the beach, in the background they showed a quick shot of some of the other passengers carrying things up the beach and they showed this one guy. Totally buff muscle guy, with a high & tight haircut. Besides the nice eye candy, I know for a fact you can’t maintain a haircut like that without almost weekly haircuts, and it would be very hard to do without electric clippers. What up with that?

An interesting history concerning La Mer from the link on that MB.

Well, jeez, who wouldn’t? :stuck_out_tongue:

Seemed like product placement. “You’ll never crack a Haliburton. They’re fantastic! [hold suitcase to camera and smile].”

I really hope you are right… I was VERY disapointed with the episode because it was all based on a secret that kate could not reveal to anyone.

When they(Kate and Jack) got the wallet, why couldn’t she open the case with Jack? What would have been the problem if Jack saw the stupid toy?

Yeah, that’s one part that really got me. I can’t think of any excuse for not just saying, “look, it’s silly but there’s a little toy in there that means a great deal to me.” Why hide it? If she’s truly that hung up on a sentimental toy, then she’s seriously whacked in the head.

I figured it’s just Kate’s style to never revel anything by choice.
Or maybe she likes intrigue.

Ok, just read the entire thread.

  1. I don’t think it really was the plane in the safe deposit box. When Kate pulls the envelope out, it doesn’t bulge like it does when she pulls it out of the case at the end. (I’ll have to check this by watching again, but I’m pretty sure).

  2. Sayid says something like “The best way to learn a foreign language is living with it”. I took this as a hint to more of his background. As if he was forced to move to an English speaking country (The US or Australia) after he let that prisoner go. Maybe he had to defect to the US to save himself.

I think too much emphasis is being placed on the significance of the lyrics of la mer and not enough on the myriad ways we can translate music/sound into math and/or graphing which will actually help Sayid make sense of the maps.

Sayid says “You concentrate on the words, I’ll take care of the math” (quotation marks used loosely here) telegraphed to me the obvious outcome that the formerly useless Shannon will continue to be useless even as she performs this important task.

Also the music box playing the tune: What little I know of music box mechanics and hokey mystery writing tells me that there will be some spooky revelation when someone finally makes the connection and opens up the back of the box. “Hey! Look at all these pretty prongs!”

I’m late to this party in many ways…reviving a day old thread and the fact that this is the first and only ep I’ve actually watched. When Farmman suggested TiVoing “LOST” back in Sept, I wrinkled my nose, remembering that train wreck of a reality show with the same name from a few years back. Since I apparently live in a cave and knew nothing about this show or the hype surrounding it, I’ve spent the last two snowed-in days on a delicious quest to find out what all the hoopla is about.

Can’t wait for Wednesday.

Any word on ABC or Family doing a repeat run?

Well, if that’s the case, let me say this:

BOONE WITHOUT A SHIRT ON!

BOONE WITHOUT A SHIRT ON!

BOONE WITHOUT A SHIRT ON!

Thank you.

LOL. I so agree.

As for the “Finding Nemo” connection with “Under the Sea”, I am sure that they really are referring to just the song, unless they have satellite capabilities that is.
