NYC MegaDopefest Journal 2003

Last night was a great starter for the early birds. A handful of us met at Kum Gang San for an extensive Korean/Japanese dinner. Soup, cellophane noodle, dumplings, radish, beets, scallion pancakes, and a few unidentifiable dishes were followed by a load of meat and shrooms barbecued right in front of us on grills in the table. We washed it all down with sweet potato wine, rice wine, and OB Lager (and bud, bud light, coors light, etc.). In attendance at the dinner were (in seating order, back and forth down the table):

Persephone, manhattan, DAVEW0071, JoeyHemlock, vix, Pucette, Acrylic Vessel, Lisa, LindyHopper, Billdo, biggirl, Gorgon Heap, zoltarb, Soda, beerchick, and me.

After a luscious assortment of fruit and the check, some of us adjourned to Rose’s Turn, a piano bar near Bleecker St. where we rocked out to Purple Rain, Home Sweet Home, Dead or Alive, Twister in the Sun, Tiny Dancer, Come Sail Away, and Total Eclipse of the Heart. Our waitress was fun and had a great singing voice.

Some funny points in the evening that I remember:

-Billdo settling the check: “Okay, who had the fried pork?”

-the Korean waitress “turning me on”

-fruit roll-ups

-DAVEW0071 wanting to go home with Acrylic Vessel

-getting asked by another bar patron if we were a sci-fi group

-DAVEW0071 getting dissed when trying to high-five Courtney, a blonde who sang Midnight Train to Georgia, while she was getting back to her seat

I look forward to seeing everyone tonight. If you’re coming to town, good luck with travel; I hear the weather isn’t great around the city. Please help out by posting your experiences at the MegaFest here because it’s impossible for any one person to catch everything and I’d love to hear about things I missed.

Well, my train arrived in Penn Station about 12:20 pm today, and less than a half-hour later, I was having lunch with Persephone and DaveW0071 at a ribs place on 44th St. Amazingly enough, Eutychus was able to join us for coffee, despite having had to drive through the rain from Rhode Island.

Now I’m back at the Red Roof, resting up for the evening’s festivities.

Since I don’t have a laptop, I’m posting this via WebTV, which the hotel provides for a price. JFTR, WebTV blows.

I know everyone was fraught with worry and wracked with concern. So to put everyone’s mind at ease---- I made it to work today.
And they never played I Will Survive at Mary’s Turn.

Wankers.

Oh, how could I forget? The piano man gave Gorgon Heap the finger. If I remember correctly it was a double bird. And not in the Billdo mama duck kinda way, either.

I don’t recall getting dissed by the Midnight Train to Georgia chick, but then, there’s probably a lot that I either don’t remember or completely missed.

For my own part today, as RTFirefly noted, Peresphone and I lunched with him today, which was a real treat. And Euty coffeed with us afterward.

This morning, though, was delightful. After being put up (or would that be put up with?) by Billdo overnight, we got up entirely too early in the morning and staggered down 72[sup]nd[/sup] Street for breakfast at a Greek-owned diner. Since Persephone is direction-impaired, I took upon myself the “burden” of squiring her around Manhattan (the island, not the moderator). We had intended to stroll down 5[sup]th[/sup] Avenue and see the fancy store windows, some still decorated for Christmas, but all of them with beautiful displays.

However, the sky was spitting down some disgusting and uniquely New York mixture of rain, freezing rain, sleet and actual big, fluffy snowflakes.

Persephone was still in need of more coffee (and she insisted it be capuchino), so we decided to wait in a nearby Starbucks for the weather to clear.

It didn’t.

So we sat in Starbucks drinking coffee, chatting, laughing, trying to look urbane and sophisticated, and periodically sticking our heads outside and saying, “Damn, this weather sucks!” and ordering another coffee.

Realizing we had to get down to 44[sup]th[/sup] Street for lunch eventually, we hopped on a bus and rode down 5[sup]th[/sup] Avenue, peering in all the shop windows as we rode past.

Coffee, small talk, some large talk, lots of laughing and foul weather.

Persephone, my friend, I hope you enjoyed your New York morning as much as I did.

I just bugged out first of the Bleeker Street Bar (having posted my first post around 4 A.M. today), having learned which names go with which faces (and promptly having forgotten half), with the crowd looking like forty-odd Dopers when I left, and the night looking still young. Nice meeting you folks.

I can’t help it if I’m so sexy. I made no advances whatsoever. She started it, I swear!

Someone please tell me that typo mna, Dynosaur, and Kyla made it okay. They had a long drive through weather that wasn’t travel-optimal.

They was there safe and sound Cranky. Tjat is until I got to them!

Can’t vouch for their condition right now, though.

This morning was the roughest I’ve had in a while. It hurts so good. Thanks to all who bought beer buckets last night, I had a great night. I got to Bleecker St. a little after 7 to find just over a dozen Dopers and damn near closed it up with dalovindj, Banger, and waterj2. I never took a head-count but we pretty much owned the front room for most of the night. A few things I remember:

-Gorgon rocking out to Springstein
-beerchick wearing a nametag that just read “I won’t tell” and then following Geobabe’s example by sticking one in her cleavage
-not recognizing Hamadryad right away :smack:
-Spit teaching southern slang to RTFirefly (“etuhehowdaee”= “get the hell out of here”)
-Eonwe’s arrival
-getting a Sharpie manicure from Acrylic Vessel (still won’t come off this morning)
-chilling outside with 'Vessel, Biggirl, and Houseman
-discussing album names with LindyHopper

Good luck to anyone traveling through bad weather today. I’m off to the museum.

Aaah, I’m glad to see the spirit of the Note Nazi lives on!

I want details, dammit!!

Tripler
The Original DopeFest Note Nazi.

How do you suppose I could get people to look down my blouse at my cleavege without being too obvious? HEHE! I HAD A BLAST LAST NITE. All the people I met are really great. Can’t wait for tonight .

This totally sucked.

I met so many new hot DoperWimminz, I can’t keep up with 'em all. Gotta make more room in my harem.

Life is rough, y’know?

[sub]And I hate to bring up a fashion faux pas, but did anyone else notice that Geobabe’s blouse was wrinkled? Tres tacky, Geo.[/sub]

I just noticed my redundancy in the above post.

DoperWimminz are, by definition, hot enough to make magma seem positively glacial.

My apologies.

Carry on.

Well, Acrylic Vessel and I have safely returned home from the city after the Bagel Brunch, and I just wanted to shout out to my homies.

We had so much fun it’s sickening.

Thanks to the NY crowd for their continued support in setting up this operation.

I’m not patient enough to list all the names of those I was pleased to see, but I simply have to throw a couple out there.

My boys dalovindj and whatmove, always great to party with you.

DaveW007 (woo!) GeoBill, and many others - great to see you again.

LindyHopper, your kindness will never be forgotten!!!

Additional thanks to Euty and Persephone for tolerating us more than you really had to.

ScottEvil and ** andygirl**, you are both extremely cool and I’m glad you made the trek.

Also about a trek, Soda kicks ass. Really. I hope all goes well for you over the next year so you can come back.
I’ll leave more to the many others who I’m certain will want to add their faves.

Thanks a lot people, Dopers rule.

Oh, yeah, and my wife lost her purple knit cap, again so if somebody finds it, please keep it safe and let us know.

You guys’re awesome! I had an absolutely fantastic time & I better damn well get all the pictures!

Lindyhopper & Hamster (I think?), I hope you guys got/are getting where you’re going safely - same goes for all Travelin’ Dopers, of course. NYC area locals, I gotta take y’all to the Korova Milk Bar one of these days - remind me!

Weirddave and I have made it safely home. Hamadryad’s van is wending its way homeward as we speak. Jersey was a messy nasty blizzard. I don’t like Jersey, now.

I had a wonderful time meeting my surrogate family. I love Biggirl and I was sad to see she couldn’t make it out on Saturday. Maybe by then, she was coloured.

Our host, Oxymoron, is one of the nicest persons I have had the pleasure to meet. Grandfather Trout sought me out and made bad puns at me. I touched many breasts. I kicked Mnementh in the nads. Playfully. Even though he brought me Canadian candy and Coke and Tim-bits. I was at Maeglin’s house twice, and he was not. I had a wonderful time. Did I mention that? I had a GREAT time.

Next year, Jack Batty and I are going to spit on people and get mugged. You know, to complete the NYC experience.

Verrain and I arrived home safely, and Zappo is on his way home. It’s been snowing pretty nastily, so hopefully, he’ll be there safely. hampster is supposed to be on his way here, but I haven’t heard from him yet. When he gets here, I’ll send him in to post a bit.

Rather than go into the whole lotso stuff that went on this weekend, let me just say that I had a totally and completely awesome time with every one of you. It was great to be in NY again, and I keep forgetting how much I miss this town.

Now a few specific comments:

persephone - Thanks for talking and listening and trying to help the guys convince me that I’m hot. (And that goes for you too, Acrylic Vessel). I love you, babe. I will find a way to get you back out this way.

DaveW0071 - M’dear, you are a gem. I had a fantastic time with you at dinner. And you ARE incredibly fine! Let me know about y’all coming up some night.

Lindyhopper - This weekend would not be nearly have been as enjoyable if you hadn’t been there. I’m glad to finally meet you, and glad that it won’t be the last time either. You are sexier than hell, and I won’t ever let you forget that. And you can use that for a sig line, too, if you want. Otherwise, I’ll think of something better.

Morgyn - Hanging out with you on Saturday afternoon was awesome! You really need to come down toward Philly some time, or we need to head up that way. And gaming will ensue! Thanks for the massage, and for helping make our little dim sum enclave a blast.

Zappo - You da best, bay-bee! Thanks for being an all around good guy, and for the ride home. Happy Birthday, m’darlin’ friend.

Soda - EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!! You were there! I was there! We were there!! I wish I’d had more of a chance to chat with you alone, but that just gives me a better reason to get out your way instead.

Grandfather Trout - It was good to see you again, hon. Let’s see what we can do about having less time between talking, ok?

Cosmopolitan - I’m glad I finally got a chance to meet you! You are truly awesome and now I worship you on so many levels! If you ever decide you DO want to come out toward Philly, Zap and I were talking about it on the way home, and we think we might be able to figure something out. So just let us know. Otherwise, I’ll just have to make my way into NY a lot more often!

I’m running out of steam at the moment (it was a very late night, and a very early morning), but a special thanks to Billdo, Manny, Canby, Vix, pucette, Oxymoron and the rest of the NY Doper Contingent for once again throwing an awesome party. I miss you guys like you wouldn’t believe.

So then, where are the pics for those of us who had to enjoy this vicariously??
