Happy National Coming Out Day, Dopers!
I didn’t see this until today. I’m surprised no one responded. A friend of mine missed an engagement on that day, and I think he was involved in Coming Out Day activities at the local university. At the place I usually see him every day, there is a young woman who often uses the phrase “That’s so gay” in a derogatory manner. So I guess that’s why he chose NOT to come out there.
Anyway, maybe everyone on the boards has already come out who is going to do so.

I didn’t intend for this to be a “come out come out wherever you are” thread, just wanted to acknowledge the day.
You’re right–it’s phrases like that that make people feel uncomfortable. And the people uttering them don’t even stop to think what their words are saying to others. It’s hard to speak up sometimes when you hear things like that being said. My favorite is when people use the word “faggot”. I usually reply with “so-and-so is a burning pile of sticks?” They never get it though.
Here’s to a day when we don’t have to tell others that words hurt. (As cliche as that sounds.)
Because the place I heard this is a small class of eight people who are preparing to work in an office environment, I brought it to the attention of the teacher in a note, and she later talked with the young woman about it. She is actually a teenager, 19 years old, and the area here is conservative and has little exposure to issues. I don’t believe she was aware of the implications of what she said, and only was saying it because all of her friends do.
