I think you used to contribute well to this board, but from my point of view at some point you transformed into grievance mode, in which almost every post was some sort of complaint about the tone of other posters on the board, or juvenile insults (in response to other juvenile insults), with very little actual engagement on issues. I hope you’ll try to put aside the complaints about tone, and ignore the insults, and just try to engage in discussions.
This is really a response to him bringing up the Giraffe Board, more than for this particular thread. But this seems to be the place to discuss that.
I have had my complaints about some interactions between that board and this one. But, for goodness sake, you’re bringing that board up like some weird boogeyman that is responsible for everything you dislike about the SDMB. Newsflash: It’s not.
And, yes, sometimes people from over there will make recommendations that are based on their experience there. So what? The source of the idea is irrelevant. It just matters whether it’s actually a good idea or not.
Even weirder is your hatred for the Pit that seemed to come out of nowhere. You were fine participating in it forever, then, all of the sudden, it became the worst place in the world. You were able to take the more insulting criticisms and respond normally. Then all of the sudden your responses just turned into attacking people for your own amusement if they said even one unkind word towards you.
There was a point where I actually didn’t have you on ignore, you know. Where, while you might have an irritating opinion, you were still interested in discussion. Now you’re mostly interested in saying how bad everyone on this board is.
And that,** krondys**, is why people get irritated at him. Well that and hijacking threads outside the Pit that touch on any social justice issue.

I was trying to do that in ATMB with regards to the misogyny stuff. I have a wife and some of my best friends are women! That is very important. We were watching a movie about women’s suffrage and the abuse and hostility those women faces was horrendous. Across the world women face discrimination and unequal treatment.
I asked myself, would I have been brave enough to suffer beatings, imprisonment, rape as punishment, family ostracism in order to make a change in the world for others? To be a martyr? Honestly, hell no. I guess I’m too cowardly to suffer the way those women have suffered and do suffer in order to make a difference.
But we aren’t talking about those issues. We are debating what is and isn’t actionable as offensive misogynistic speech on a board that has a few sub forums that are by their very nature likely to have issues that address disparities between differing groups of people. Digging into why the disparities exist and solutions, if even possible, is bound to be upsetting to some. And that is even without the existence of a group of people who have spent a decade or so scrounging up snark material deliberately using inflammatory language and dishonest interpretations.
BigT, if I were interested in just stirring up trouble, insulting people, and in general being a so called “jerk!!1!” don’t you think I’d actually do that whenever I had any justification in doing so? You come in here attack me and guess what? I’m responding to what you have to say. I’m disagreeing with it. But I’m in the Pit and I could disagree much more stronger. But why? I’d not noticed the SDMB as particularly misogynistic. That might be because (a) I mostly ignore the “thoughts” of our right-wing morons, and (b) I may be slightly misogynistic myself — I certainly have a tendency to associate women with sex!
But after following the click-marks to see what all this fuss was about, it appears that octopus ridiculed the suggestion that SDMB’s women be asked to refine the rules by :
(a) noting that SDMB men might pretend to be women,
(b) asking what about transsexuals?
Octopus may have intelligent views on some topics, but this is just baby talk. We do have Russian pretending to be Americans so they can side with octopus and his ilk politically, but they give themselves away with their stupidity. The idea that long-time Dopers will lie about their gender is insulting. Maybe lying is your style, octopus, but if you think other Dopers are liars, why not just go away? And holding up “transsexuals” as the Gotcha!, as though he’s found a marvelous reductio ad absurdem is the insipid sort of non-thinking we’ve come to expect from Trumpists.

Octopus, you could have expressed disagreement with the proposal for a women’s panel on misogyny in a constructive way. Instead, your disagreement was “but what about us men?” and “how can we also combat the misandry problem here?” You see it as all the same topic, but it’s not because there isn’t a fucking misandry problem on the Dope, despite the whining of a few who have their fragile masculinity challenged because they can’t comment on “hot chicks” in Senate hearings.
I’m sure you’ll whine that I’ve completely misconstrued your words here. Given your extremely frequent postings on the topic, I’m pretty comfortable with my interpretation of your feelings about the topic. But even if it’s a matter that everyone is misunderstanding poor widdle Octopus, it points to poor writing or poor arguments. I think you were moderated because you didn’t follow the moderator instructions. Specifically, that the moderators had decided that yes, misogyny is a real problem on the SDMB, and yes, they will address it, but they’re not sure exactly how. And they were interested in suggestions on how to make the board better and less misogynistic, but they were not interested in continual denials that this phenomenon is real and a problem on this board, or other hijacks. And they explained that, but you didn’t change anything, so you got mod’d.
It’s looking like we’re about one step away from Octopus declaring that he’s been conducting a psychology experiment and we all fell for it. And now he’s gathered up all his data and is going to go off and write his thesis right after having sex with a woman.

It was the difference between a proposal and a complaint in the abstract and the details of an actual concrete step and the ramifications and complications. Anyone can make a proposal. It’s the details that are difficult and challenging to work out.

You are right. I could have posted in a far more placating and sympathetic tone. I don’t think tone should matter all that much when it comes to things like not fighting bigotry with bigotry but apparently it does.
It’s not even a misunderstanding that’s troublesome. You can clarify a misunderstanding. What you cannot fix are those who deliberately lie about posts or flat out insult you in ATMB.

As soon as E_C_G gave me that note I stopped posted about misogyny or solutions to such. I challenged the reasoning for the note. It was in the challenging of the note when I was disputing the allegation that I hijacked a thread that E_C_G decided that debating the moderation was a sufficient trigger to formally act. E_C_G did not ban me because I refused to change my method of posting on misogyny. I wasn’t posting on misogyny when I got the topic ban. Do you not understand that was the motivation to challenge the topic ban before that thread got closed because of the usual trolls who do derail showing up?
