Oh good Lord!!!! Not Nipples!!!!!!

That would be creepy.

It think it’s pretty clear that indecent exposure is frowned upon. The easiest way to tell: it’s illegal. In this situation Fear Itself shouldn’t be expected to know intuitively that this specific type of OP and poll would throw everyone into a righteous tizzy. I honestly saw a post a couple months ago where someone described cleaning feces out of his anus with a handkerchief. I mean, I would’ve known this would happen, but that’s because I know his fatal mistake:

His post was unusual, while also being related to something sexual. You see, no one ever seems to actually get over their apparently innate fear of the dreaded “sexual deviant”. So instead they just find more arbitrary and silly things to be appalled over.

People read the poll and OP, it made them uneasy for no rational reason. But instead of accepting they themselves may have an issue, they lashed out at the poster. Since his poll options went into a lot of detail, he must be some sort of creep or perv who sits in front of his computer masturbating to nipple statistics.

I swear at least half the threads on this board devolve into this nonsense. This could just go into an endless loop.

To be clear:

I’m not saying anyone it trying to censor Fear Itself, by saying his poll is creepy. I understand you are just stating your opinion.

I, also, am not trying to censor you when I disagree with that opinion.

And, just to be thorough, I’m not saying that this post I’m replying to is an attempt to censor me.

So, to reiterate: no one is trying to shut anyone up. We’re just disagreeing with each other. You can say you’re creeped out by internet polls, just as I can say that’s stupid.

Nobody is expected to know social norms intuitively. They must be learned. Fear Itself has been here long enough to learn our norms.

Oh, bullshit.

Fear Itself definitely has issues even if only his inability to learn and follow social norms. I don’t accept that this is my problem or my issue simply because it is not. For once, I’m not the creepy one here.

He didn’t think of it–no one gave him a tip-off.

To the objectors: context is clearly important, a poll for purposes of bra fitting, even if that detailed, wouldn’t be a problem (I assume).

So, is the issue the possible sexual nature of it? Or is it the ambiguity and possible deception behind the context in that the pollster may have had ulterior motives that were not clearly stated?

For example, if the pollster said “This is a turn on so please only participate if you feel comfortable providing me this info” - would this remove the creepy factor?

Possible sexual nature? Have you read the OP in that thread? There’s no possible about it.

What ambiguity? He wanted to know more about Doper women’s nipples because it aroused him.

That’s pretty much what he did.

I guess my point was, with all that gets posted on this board and is considered interesting or humorous, for dopers to go “THIS, THIS is the creepiest, THIS is where we draw the line” strikes me as rather hypocritical.

I have to admit though, I didn’t read very far into the thread. But for me? I would have found it far creepier if he’d been all “soooooOO LAYdies, whatcha wearin? is it cold? tell me about your nipples” as opposed to the fairly clinical and plain (though lengthy) poll he did post.

Yes I read the OP.

Then I’m confused. How can it be creepy if he was honest and your participation was voluntary?

This doesn’t make any sense.

Is any man that likes nipples creepy?
Is it the level of detail alone that is creepy? (If so, then you’ve just painted 99.9% of all males as creepy because this level of detail is much less than what we are aware of in general about all kinds of aspects of the female body).

This so basic, I’m going to have to spend some time and figure out how to explain it. I’ll get back to you on this point.

You skip over a vital distinction. We may be fans of nipples. We may silently catalogue all kinds of details of the female form. But we don’t start threads on the SDMB asking women to give us those details.

Every man on the bus may be stealing glances at a woman and thinking ‘nice tits’. But a man who says “Hello. You have nice tits.” has crossed quite a few boundaries.

Well, I certainly understand what you mean by crossing boundaries, especially given your example, and that makes some sense. But given the history of threads on the SDMB and the opt-in nature of participation for each thread, this explanation seems to fall short.

It’s a combination. It’s the nature of the OP and how some people read that as him being aroused by said nipples. It was the length of detail and that, to answer some of the poll options, you had to be in a state of arousal to do so. It was the seeming inability to recognize the boundaries that are normally set that aren’t crossed when sexual TMI threads are broached.

As has already been stated, we do have threads on all sorts of questionable sexual stuff. However, I don’t remember any that required current stimulation to participate. I don’t remember any that had thirty, very in-depth poll options. I don’t remember any that we’re so rhapsodic in their OP, that I got the feeling they’d necessarily be fapping to the answers. Maybe that’s why they asked, but they didn’t sell it nearly as well as Fear Itself.

So again, I think by and large the objection that it was creepy was because of a combination of factors. However, as a female, I had no problem with it and even wondered why Fear Itself didn’t try to dissolve some of the ones who did’s negative opinion of it. I was amused, but didn’t post in the poll because all that effort isn’t anyone else’s damned business.

I’m a male who found Fear Itself’s OP creepy and prurient, for reasons that have been well-explained by others. There is a factor that hasn’t been mentioned that differentiates this topic from other sexual topics. Several people have compared this to threads about “How do you like to masturbate?” and such. This strikes me as quite different. The focus on one body part seems to be clear-cut objectification, and is detailed to the point of appearing to be a fetish. The OP, to me, said “I have a nipple fetish, ladies, please gratify me!” Pretty creepy.

This is the Internet. If an anonymous nipple poll is the most creepy thing you’ve seen I suggest you dip in deeper. For the record: I’m the crown princess of Denmark and I’ve got big heavy tits and puffy nipples exploding with delight.

Does “pretty creepy”, which I wrote, equal “most creepy” in your vocabulary?

Well, objectification itself isn’t creepy, right? Because I would challenge you to find a male that doesn’t do it to some extent (including you).

Again, given that the OP was open about it, and it’s an opt-in, is it creepy because it’s on the SDMB? On some other boards it could be considered ok (depending on the nature of the board)?

Or do you think that it’s always creepy for a person to ask others about details for prurient reasons?

To me, treating people (or parts of people) as objects is inherently creepy. Your point about it specifically being on SDMB is a good one that I hadn’t thought of. It is made a bit creepier because this is a virtual community where I feel like I know some people. On other boards, depending on the nature of the board, it might seem more in place, but probably no less creepy to me. As for me objectifying people, I don’t think I have done that for a long, long time.

Ok. Possibly your reasons are different than others - it’s still unclear as the others didn’t mention the objectification.

You don’t ever visualize a woman in a fantasy?

Yep, I expect that my reasons are different from others. And no, I don’t fantasize sexually about strangers, or even friends. I appreciate the beauty around me, but my sexual thoughts involve my wife.

That’s pretty creepy. Especially considering your wife is a donkey. Could you describe her nipples for the rest of us, so we can have sexual thoughts of her too?

Wow, you’ve gone from someone I didn’t recognize to someone who has trouble comprehending simple words to someone who’s a weird asshole in just two posts! Congratulations.
