Oh good Lord!!!! Not Nipples!!!!!!

It appears I misunderstood.

Damn! I was told that technique never failed! You’ve lied to me again porn!

How about “the nippler”?

I don’t think the original thread would have passed the dinner party test. If there was a lull in conversation, “ladies, tell us about your nipples” would not be a conversational masterstroke.

When I saw it I assumed it was probably a trolling attempt or a badly judged joke. The reactions to it have little to do with prudishness. If women want to talk about their nipples, that’s fine, but what possible purpose does a poll have?

That’s a strawman, that isn’t what **Alice the Goon **and **olivesmarch4th **said. Women don’t have to be in imminent danger of rape to feel uncomfortable. I’m male, but I found the rape scene in The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo to be upsetting to watch. I’m not black, but I’m not happy when exposed to racism either.

1 I never said they did.

#2 I already admitted that I misunderstood a previous post in post #41.

#1 It was BigT’s strawman, which you said you agreed with.

#2 Sorry, was writing my post when you replied.

Was it the impersonal, maybe sort of clinical nature of a poll that got to people? Because I didn’t see that much difference in creepiness or weirdness between that OP and ones like, “How do you masturbate?” or “How do you like your oral sex?”

I understand why some women might feel a bit creeped out by something that reminds them of unpleasant experience, but on the computer it’s a bit distanced, to me, and without names on the poll responses I don’t see how it could be all that personal.

I’m a woman, just for perspective. To each their own. It just struck me as odd, that’s all. And kind of amusing.

Um, yeah… about that…

yeah.

Alice I’m not sure if you’re being serious or making the obvious joke because you got a straight line.

Either way, I have not noticed people being less willing to engage me in conversation on the boards or at fests so I suppose it doesn’t really matter.

If he had just said, “Ladies, talk about your nipples! Pointy, flat, what color?” or something like that, I bet a lot of women would have answered.

He sat there and thought about thirty-something permutations of nipples. At this point I say, you know there’s this thing called porn on the Internet? Free and everything! And topless women abound (pun intended).

It was asking for way too much detail and had been way too thought out. What, are you doing a thesis?

No, I don’t think anybody would treat you any differently, or that it matters one bit.

Does this mean you won’t be responding to my “Show us your vagina!” poll? Participants will need a speculum, a protractor and a turkey baster.

Vedi nipples e poi mori.

Alright, I can’t figure this out and Google translate is no help.

Is it “I see the nipples of dead people”?

Stupid pun based on an old saying, “See Naples, and then die.” (That is, then your life will be complete–not to be interpreted as wishing death on anyone.)

Ad areola per ardua

En mammae veritas

Vini, Vedi boobies

Sure they find it creepy, but the question is: whose problem is that?

If you’re honestly creeped out because someone posted an unusually thorough nipple survey on the internet, then you’re the one with the problem, not them.

emcee2k I have to disagree. Every community has some kind of rules and norms. When somebody violates these, a very emotional reaction is natural.

The poll and the opening post were largely seen as violating the norms of the board (though not the rules). That is largely why people have problems with them.

And going by your argument, if I walk naked down main street the police shouldn’t bother me but should bother anybody who complains.

This makes no sense. Whoever posts that thread has a right to post it. I have a right to feel creepified and a right to say so. I don’t recall anyone in either thread saying he should have been shut down.

I mean, really, what do you want? In your ideal world he posts a creepy thread (in my eyes) and, what, I should answer anyway, or maybe just ignore it? I *could *ignore it, but I wanted to state my piece. As it’s a message board, that’s rather expected.

All those options and you couldn’t find space for circumcised vs. uncircumcised?

It struck me as just the opposite of “impersonal” and “clinical”. The text of the OP describes how much Fear Itself enjoys looking at nipples, and the extremely specific poll options ask for much greater detail than I would expect in any sort of legitimate medical context. The title “Ladies: Show Us Your Nipples!” doesn’t seem particularly detached or neutral either.

I usually ignore those threads, but I suspect a lot of Dopers would have a negative reaction to a thread titled “Ladies: Show Us How You Masturbate!” that contained a similarly detailed poll. I am sure someone will want to make a *hilarious *quip about how that would be the best thread ever, but I have no doubt such a thread would also attract quite a few comments about how creepy it all was.

ETA: For CanvasShoes, I was prepared to more or less agree with you until I actually clicked the link and read the thread in question. That poll was creepy as hell.
