Ok...I finally did it....I got EverQuest.

Trinity went out on lunch and picked it up for me.

Its the Gold Edition, so it has all the available expansion packs, cloth maps, a pewter figure (woo), and the manual.

I have to say, I’m actually nervous!
I can’t wait to get home and install this puppy!!!

Anyone got any starting hints? (Particular races, classes, etc?)

:giddy:

S’long, man, it was nice knowing you.

Come and play with us Davey. Forever, and ever, and ever.

Wow, you’re going where no one has ever returned from.

Seriously though although I know several people into MMORPG’s like EQ and AO, I never found the appealing to me personally.

The worlds are just too big, and I feel like the personal interactions between the gamers is rather lost.

This is why I tried out Neverwinter Nights and man, what a breath of fresh air!

The game can be played so many ways that there is always somehting new to do in it.

My favorite ways of playing NWN:

  1. By myself, trying out the myriad user made adventures.

  2. Hanging out at adventuring in PW’s (persistent Worlds). These are like mini MMORPG’s where instead of thousands of players in one server, you get a tightly knit community of a couple of hundred (with upto 64 players on at any one time). The PW are usually created a by a team of dedicated fans whom poor out their soul into these projects and it relaly shows.

  3. My favorite way of playing by far however is the DM + small party way. You have a group of 6 friends and a DM and you adventure through an opriginal storyline created by the DM. Now THAT’s Role-playing.

Eh, enough about NWN, wish you luck adventuring in EQ, I left that road long ago, but I’m sure there are still lots of fun to be had there!

I’ve played Star Wars:Galaxies, but I can’t run it on my PC. I got right into it so the only way to quench that thirst was EverQuest.

I’ve played Neverwinder Nights. That’s a good game.

I’d give you some advice, but last time I played EQ was a couple years ago and I KNOW things have changed since then. But don’t start in that Elven city way up north (Kelethin?), it’s dark all the freakin’ time and you can’t see a damn thing.

I play now, on Brell. It’s a lot of fun.

Play the race/class you find most appealing because that’s something you cannot change. You can overcome race limitations with your equipment so really pick the race you like.

Yeah, that’s the trick.

When I play any other games, I usually play the stealthy character. (In UT, I am always the team sniper.) And usually used ranged weapons. (Again, sniper and in Diablo II, I use an Amazon character with a bow.)

So I would probably be looking for that sorta thing.

Try a rogue or monk then. But if you like range weapons, rangers are deadly w/ a bow.

I played Everquest for almost 4 years, finally quit a couple months ago after doing pretty much everything that there was to do. If you want to play a stealth class, rogue is definitely the best choice (actually pretty much the only choice). If you want to play a sniper class go with a ranger, they are DEADLY with a bow at high levels. Be ready to put a long time into your character if you want them to really shine though. Thats the problem with everquest you never feel you are up to par until you reach the highest levels get the best gear and get tons of alternate advancement points. I still get the urge to play once in a while, but i traded my account for a brand new top of the line computer not long ago and after playing so long starting from scratch just doesn’t appeal one bit.

Everything here is good advice. Rogue & ranger are both good choices.

What server you playing on? If you happen to be on Tunare, give Bryllyn a tell sometime… I’ll fix ya up with some stuff and show you around.

I started playing a week after the original release. Here is some tips.

Read the book that came with the game, read the websites, and decide what race/class you enjoy. Also don’t be afraid to start over if you don’t like the race/class you started. Personally I play an Erudite Enchanter on Solusek Ro. Before that I tried a monk, and a necro. Enchanter is the only one I enjoy playing, but would switch to a gnome if given the chance. Can’t wait for perm. Illusion. Don’t beg, and remember that your reputation will follow you so be careful. Also don’t be afraid to ask questions.

If you play on Solusek Ro send Otanx a tell. If you play somewhere else send a ;tell solusek.otanx if you have a question.

Hey! maybe we can all setup a SDMB serverwide channel? Everyone “/join serverwide.sdmb” See you there.

EQ discussion, I’ll sign my EQ signature.

Thanks for the tips guys.
I think I’ll use a Human Ranger.

as for the server, I dunno yet. The first invitation I got was for Emarr, so I think I will start there for now.

You might want to avoid humans at first, they are terribly night blind. Maybe a wood elf ranger? They start with infravision.

I’m biased, shaman are terribly fun to play. Get spirit of the wolf (faster run speed) at level 9, get all the fun utility spells (invisibility, see invisible, levitation, breathe underwater spell, etc). Shaman are spell casters who can take hits from monsters.

I’m on Emarr

Gloriana Lleeah`Rhio
65 Shaman
Affliction
Erollisi Marr

Wood Elf Ranger sounds good.

I’m installing and patching now, if all goes well, I’ll be up and running in a bit.

Permanent Illusion rocks. I’ll put the SDMB chat channel on my permachannel sign up.

Moderator’s note:

Off to MPSIMS.

Tveblen,
IMHO mod

MPSIMS?

Don’t most game discussions go to Cafe Society?

Thanks TV.

Ok, I’ve got it all set up and running.

I’m at the point where it is asking me for a server, but I don’t see 'Emarr" there.

(I also tried the chat room in the “Chat” option, but that command didn’t work, I guess I do that later…)
