(Old) A Drinking Problem in the MMP

a hour after my morning post, the rain has started again. we may dry out weds. or thurs. once again the temp is low and the humidity is high, clammy is the best description for the weather.

I’ll have to consult with all you PNW folks once we move up there, as I need to know how to deal with moss. We have a little bit here in northern California, but nothing like what you have in Oregon and Washington.

I just made a killer drink. Strawberries are at the height of their season, and I bought a huge batch at a roadside stand yesterday. I sliced up two baskets full into a rubbermaid container, and added about their own weight in sugar. I shook up the container and put it in the fridge, and stirred up the berries a couple of times the next day. After 12 hours, the berries had given up most of their juice into the sugar and I had a lot of strawberry syrup. I mixed about a quarter cup of the syrup into a glassful of club soda and added ice, and the result was the best strawberry soda in the world. I had to restrain myself from drinking more than one big glass of it.

Peaches are next in season, and I think I’ll repeat the experiment with them.

Well, rats.

I went to the hardware store to get some deck paint. The girl said they’re out of the base. (It needs to be solid paint, not transparent stain.) I pointed out a can that said ‘Porch & Floor’. She said, ‘Oh, yeah! That’ll work!’ So she mixed up the colour to simulate treated cedar. She had to go to the register, so another girl came over to get my paint. She said, ‘Is your deck covered?’ I told her it wasn’t. (For accuracy: The uncovered part of the deck, outside of the catio, is what’s being painted.) She said, ‘This isn’t going to work. It won’t hold up.’ ‘How long will it last?’ ‘Maybe one season. After that it will start peeling.’ They won’t have the right base until Monday, which would be cutting it rather close time-wise. So I’m going to have to call Blowe’s or Home Despot to see if they can help me out.

At least I can water the lawn today.

That sounds delicious!

Glad I took a mental health day. Apparently the power went out in town, so all the stop lights are out. I’m sure down town is a nightmare.

teela Sorry if’n that’s not your mump nick, but that does sound like a delicious beverage.

2Gig congrats!

CatGlove sorry to hear about your husband. I’m also sending best wishes.

Recovery Day 1 is a bitch. I guess yesterday I had the good drugs and felt pretty good. Today not so much. Oh well, it’ll pass.

Happy Tuesday!

Diagnosis: bladder infection. Meds procured. Fingers crossed.

We just had a quick t-boomer/deluge pass thru. I got home shortly before it hit.

The rest of the evening is dedicated to chillage.

May it resolve swiftly.

Those are pretty readily fixable in men. UTIs in women are a bigger hassle. Good to have a resolution in hand.

Here in Barbados its been raining since we parked the jet 3 hours ago. I’m in an open air bar adjacent to a deserted beach watching lightning strike the ocean 2 miles out while it looks like dusk but sunset is 3 hours from now. At least it’s tropically warm and humid. God’s atmosphere, if not exactly sunny.

'Nuff said! :stuck_out_tongue:

Your day sounded wonderful 2gig!

{{{cat glove and hubby}}}

Glad that they got FCD’s issue figured out Moooooooom.

sensai, my mom came from a Catholic family of 14 kids. Her youngest brother had a nephew his age and 2 nieces + 2 nephews older than he was. I have first cousins from ~50 - 79 years old. The 43 year old niece isn’t the oldest one. Her sister is 51 and one of her brothers is 49 and all of my late brother’s grandkids are older than the 20 year old niece. I’m close to the same age as some of my first cousins’ kids, so it can get confusing at family reunions.

Irked, came home, hung out with Nelson and the neighbor dogs for a few extra minutes before coming in to AC and supper.

Stay safe and healthy y’all!

The storms saw the evening rush starting and decided “now is the time” and unloaded a deluge upon us.

Should have just gone barefoot.

Am still beset with the dumbest flies (Jeremy Clarkson voice) In the world.(JCv) You dumb asses are bumping on a screen, I open said screen, and you can’t find your way out.

I am also a mother-in-law. WTHeck?

lucky that’s sounds absolutely delicious! We love strawberries. We’ve been going through about 2# weekly for the last 3-4 weeks. But have not made a strawberry soda. Will have to try it. We do a lot of shakes or put them on cereal, cottage cheese or just eat them like that. Peaches are great in shakes as well.

When I woke up I was a bit morose. But I walked to work with a former co-worker. We didn’t go straight there but did a circuitous route through the neighborhood. He got me laughing so that was good. Worked but didn’t finish all before Hubs came to take me to lunch.

He wanted to go to a restaurant that he’d been to before. He thought it was the Ivanhoe Cafe aka Polish Yacht Club. He hadn’t looked up directions, only had a vague idea of where it was. So I grabbed his phone and tried his maps ap. It’s different than mine and I couldn’t exactly see the route, particularly that the street it was on didn’t go through to a main artery. Then the first time down the street we missed it because we were looking for a restaurant. On the second try as we were approaching Hubs said That CAN’T be it. I told him to park because his ap said it was. It was an over 100 year old house that looked like a hole in the wall. There was a young man sitting on the ground outside the door. My thought was that he was security, likely for the cars. To say that it was in a less than desirable neighborhood in Detroit was an understatement. The inside was delightful. Turned out it had been a home converted to first a bar in 1909 then added the restaurant to much of the rest of the rooms in the house. Very quaint. (It had been a blind pig during Prohibition) Fried pickles for appetizer. Brought a HUGE bowl of coleslaw; the dressing was so good, and a plate of quartered pickles and peppers. Hubs ordered perch which came with chicken noodle soup and normally fries but they were out so he had redskin potatoes dressed in butter and parsley. I had kielbasa and pierogies which also came with chicken noodle soup. Needed a big box for the leftovers. Split a big piece of key lime pie; so good!

Afterward we drove through Hamtramck looking for the restaurant that he thought he had wanted to go to. Turned out the place is the Polish Village Cafe. I’ve eaten there and I’m glad we went to Polish Yacht Club instead as the food and service and environment were superior. Note: the Yacht Club part of the name is a joke as there were numerous pictures of people in the club in days gone by wearing captain’s hats. But there was a kind of pledge they signed that they either didn’t own boats or anything larger than a rowboat and that they didn’t live near water. There were also a lot of pictures of celebrities including a young Phyllis Diller.

Finished up work then came home. Having tomato soup and grilled cheese for dinner as we’re really not very hungry after such a big lunch.

The air quality is so bad (from Canadian fires) that the feds have suggested not going outside. It’s hazy, almost foggy.

Howdy Y’all! We laundered and put it all away even. Then it was quality cee-mint pond time wherein we accomplished sloth, nappage, and day drinkin’. Multi-taskin’ at it’s laziest! Showers were had and sup fixed and et. All in all a good day to be retired drains on society in southwest Jawja.

CatGlove the Polish Yacht Club sounds like my kinda joint. Glad you had fun.

Swampie y’all are totally my hero. Doin’ abso-friggin-lutely nuthin’ and doin’ it with grace, style, and total pride. I hope to emulate your fine example every day here soon.

Around here the rain switched from raining to windy RAINING with lightning right nearby. Most of the space under the open air bar was being deluged. So we all ended up pressed crotch to butt against the curved central bar since nobody wanted to brave the 100 yard dash in the open to the main buildings. You’d be instantly soaked. There was no room to do anything but drink and shout at each other over the din. Spent 30 minutes squeezed between 3 Australian ~25yo women who were mostly too drunk to be intelligible, despite the fact they wanted to yak with this weird old Yank. But they were capital-C cute. And kinda cuddly. I fed them some of my fish balls and they were suitably impressed. Sigh. Youth is so wasted on the young.

Eventually the rain subsided a bit to merely slamming and I made my move for freedom. And more so, for dinner. Now 2 hours later, dinner is down the hatch, the rain & lighting yet continues, just not so vigorously. They don’t call it the “Tropics” for nothing. At least I can get from here to my room without being rained on. The “lobby” of this hotel is 100% open air, but under a roof. When the wind picks up, great gouts of rain blow right through, soaking everything and everyone. I love the Caribbean!

cat glove, I’ll look into that. I’ve had some people swear by their chiropractor and others, like you, who are far from enamored with them. I’ve always been wary because of the back surgery I had mumblemumble years ago. But there are times I’ve had friends pop my back and that’s worked. I just don’t know enough, beyond the fact that I need to do something.

I am going to have to start using that phrase. Because I just love it!

gig, I’m glad the proposal went off so well, and that you got a chance to know your ex’s husband. Anything bringing families together is a great thing.

Sensei, I’m proud of your 11 years. I’ve only been in danger of having a drinking problem when I was young, depressed, and had no self-esteem, but I know from friends how tough it can be sometimes. Persevering through the hard times without sliding back is fantastic. Here’s to another eleventy-eleven years of sobriety! raises glass of sweet tea

JtC, :people_hugging: MFN had the same problem as late as 2 years ago (I think he said). He told me that there were a lot of people from that life that he had to just cut off completely because he didn’t need that temptation. I’m proud of anyone that can make those steps and make it stick. I honestly don’t know if I would have the strength to quit something if I got started. Addiction to ANYTHING that is destructive to you, your health and your relationships is a tough thing to get past.

Thus endith the Real Fish Rah Rah Empowerment Message.

True enough. I managed to make it through the end of “Vincent and the Doctor” before I had to admit defeat last night and go to bed. I’ve got plans to play online with Hubby and New Partner otherwise I’d probably be doing the same thing again tonight because I loved “The Lodger”. But I think this will be more fun.

FCM, “sweet, but weird” is something I strive to become some day!

metal mouse we’ve been getting the excessive heat warning all day up here. When I went out this morning, I knew that being out in the heat of the day was something I had no interest in!

pilot, poor granddaughter! It’s tough when you’re older but when you’re that young. My younger sister got her finger caught in the door of a stall at the drive in when she was about 5. My dad has always said that one of the worst sounds was being stuck outside while his daughter was inside somewhere he couldn’t go, screaming.

I think we could substitute BtY in for the kitten when they get tired. He will probably last four or five hours, at least. Then we just have to find the next replacement.

sunny, I hope tomorrow’s recovery is far better than today!

lucky, that sounds delicious! I wish I could put it in club soda but I’m still wary about carbonation on my ulcer. It may have healed enough that it’s not a problem but I’m really don’t want a repeat of the last time!

cat glove, it sounds like you had a day full of deliciousness, happiness and yummy food. You really can’t knock a day like that.

wet one, that sounds horrible! Hope you’re following the feds’ instructions.

I ended up just watching Doctor Who last night without reading the book. I blame being baked. Which, according to my memory, I hadn’t been before this. I’m usually good about taking lower doses of my gummies but I felt like experimenting a little. I think this is going to be a safer way for me to relax than drinking. The only problem I have at the moment is that MFN was the one taking me to get them and I’m still enough of a newbie that I’m not comfortable going on my own when I know little to nothing. His contact has been inconstant so I’m just hoping he’ll get in touch sometime soon to meet me somewhere to get some. Otherwise, I may have to bite the bullet and hope I remember enough.

After all my cleaning and everything yesterday, I decided that I needed to get back on track with my exercising. CtE and I were actually out of the house before 8:30 to walk. Which was good because the heat was brutal later in the day. I used my back brace and it made it so much better! The only negative was forgetting to switch my arch supports to my newer shoes. But still, I did make my full two miles. I just have to keep up with it, and keep remembering that I only need to get up one more time than I’ve fallen.

The rest of the day was a little more cleaning and some computer time. I booted up Civ VI and played for an hour or two. Hubby was out of the house for much of the day for a work meeting. I achieved some nappage after he got home. We had to take my best friend’s mom to the airport - and it was a close thing! Hubby did that for me. I’m planning on getting up early when she comes back on the 14th to pick her up.

I found out that apparently, I’m popular. I got a phone call from someone at Vanderbilt asking me to participate in another Urology study. This one involves an MRI. And $50 is $50. And it’s tomorrow. Thankfully, tomorrow had nothing planned so I’m able to do it then. One less thing to worry about. I do, however, have to figure out who to contact regarding getting the $200 check that was sent to me for the last study stopped and reissued. USPS said it was to be delivered on Friday. Not in the mailbox yet. And it’s pissing me off because I could definitely use the money.

Yesterday I’d gotten an email from the volunteer coordinator of my branch of the library asking if anyone wanted to be part of a salute to volunteers on the library’s website. I replied back and told him that if he thought I’d be a good fit for it, I would be interested. Today, he replied back saying that he thought I’d be a great fit and gave me all the info that I need. All of this and a lot of ego-boosting likes on a picture I posted in a group I’m in have made me really happy today. I’m kinda glad that I’ve moved from focusing on the negative to intentionally focusing on the positive.

Tonight should be fun playing video games with my two guys. I’m going to get pounded into the ground, but since I’m expecting it going in, I can just have fun playing. Depending on when we’re done, I may get some reading done afterward. I’ve got to get ready for the Read Every Day in July fundraiser I’m doing for the American Cancer Society.

I hope everyone has a wonderful night. Everyone deserves to have wonderful days, nights and any other time!

To further my saga of dumb flies, I just killed one against my laptop screen. Just a couple of fingers slowly to his doom.

I went to Blowe’s for deck paint. Our deck was made of treated (not pressure-treated) cedar. I took a stick of wood with me to match the finish. I started painting (I did about a third), and I don’t like the colour. It looks more like British WWII officers’ khaki, which is more yellow than American khaki, than it does the treated wood, which looks more reddish. Oh, well. It is what it is. The Spousal Unit says it looks fine. I did paint half of one side of the stick I’d taken in, with the new paint. It kinda matches. In any case, the wood will have a protective coating on it.

We each had two slices of leftover pizza for dinner. I didn’t like eating the carbs, but it had to get et and it was good. Speaking of eating, I haven’t had corn since Sunday. I’ll leave it to you to determine why I said that.

Tomorrow I’ll finish painting the over-half of the deck. Thursday, I plan to move the wood stack frame, put the wood back in it, and put the cover back on. Friday will be finishing painting the deck. Today, the lawn has been watered.

We have our roof power-washed ever couple of years. It costs a couple-hundred bucks. I really should climb up there fome Autumn, and sprinkle the Moss B Ware.

Evening all. Will try and catch up with everyone but 33 messages since I reported this morning is a lot of reading. Got my exercise in (2 visits) and am adequately fed and hydrated. Did all my checks today, also removed the bird nest (as I suspected, there were three dead chicks in it :disappointed:) and put some pipe and wood up there with Gorilla Tape to prevent future nestings. Not pretty, but doubt anyone will ever see it.

Still trying to decide if I want to take a short July vacation. Aiming for Myrtle Beach and Charleston, SC, just about have the finances and dates worked out, but just a little reluctant to pull the trigger, what with the two big trips (February and November) for the year. Probably will go just to get out of the area for a bit before youth soccer re-starts.

Well…

Wet one, that makes sense, trying to get through Chicago O’Hare (and then another major airport) is hard enough for those in good health.

Pilot, sounds like it was a good trip to the Islands.

Boo fae, why are they complaining to you; shouldn’t the teaching staff be taking those calls?

lucky, that sounds like a delicious drink. Will await word on the peach option in the future.

VanGo, teela’s Mumper name is lucky. Teela Brown is a character in Larry Niven’s Ringworld SF series, she was bred over centuries to be the luckiest person in the galaxy, so that’s how she acquired the name. And hope the flies cease tormenting you.

FCM, glad it got diagnosed and hope the treatment works well.

Cat Glove, that sounds like an interesting restaurant. Not much Polish cuisine in North Ali-bama.

wet one, hope the air gets better soon. I imagine folks with asthma and other respiratory problems aren’t enjoying life very much.

Real Fish, hope they get the money issue straightened out; $200 can accomplish a lot.
And Yea!! on the library recognition; you deserve it.

Flyboy, hope the painting works out in the end.

Whew!! Sorry if I missed y’all, I really need to make sure I do an afternoon check at this place. Take care and I’ll catch you on Hump Day.
