(Old) Autumn Equinox - changing colour in the MMP

Hey, now, chill back a bit.

I know you’re frustrated.

Many - very many - of us here have been/are there, as far as the "bein’ po’ " thing goes, and yup it’s no fun.

Turn things inside-out; wear 'em again. If they’re not covered in literal filth or stinky for other reasons, what’s the problem?

You’ll be alright.

Aw, shit. Now that’s scary.

Up, caffeinated, and sheveled. Off to heave, and see if TVCTPMO can get me to break my swear record.

And everybody in Helene’s way stay safe.

Morning, mumpers! It’s currently 9c/57f with a predicted high of 12c/53f, and cloudy. Weather app says “The weather is fucking boring. Let’s talk about the amazing fucking gerbil circus I’m creating!” Yes, that should liven things up a bit.

I saw the post on farcebook, it is an amazing and very impressive collection! Conga-rats on the interview too

I’m glad he has seen the error of his ways and you’ll get the paperwork you need.

Supposedly you never forgot how…I’m not a big fan of them with or without the e- bit, cyclists on our roads are generally not treated well by motorists.

Hurrah! I get to do that today as I’ve got Monday off

There’s not much excitement in my day to look forward to. I’ve been to two departmental meetings so now I have two lots of minutes to write up. I’ve got a minion meeting this morning so I’ll have to document that as well. Fortunately things with students have settled down again, a major background process for us hasn’t worked so we’ve had to manually add students to everything they need on our virtual learning site which is a pain, but not such a massive one as it could have been if we weren’t such diligent record-keepers!

Yesterday afternoon there was a massive thunderstorm and accompanying frog-strangler just as I was about to leave the orifice. Despite an umbrella, I was soggy by the time I got to the station and then I found they’d closed Platform 1 because it was allegedly full (I could see from the bridge on the way in that it wasn’t) so they stopped anyone else going down there. Consequently, I couldn’t get on the train I’d intended to be on, missed the connection in the Big City station, and missed a couple of buses that would get me home. Much frustration and grumbling, but I made it in the end.

Today wasn’t much better, bus was on time but there are loads of delays and cancellations on the rail network because of flooding. We haven’t had anything like Swampy’s weather but enough rain to cause flooding and some landslides that have caused problems for the trains. Made it to campus, I have food and plenty of tea so I will survive the day.

I hope everyone in Helene’s path is managing to stay safe and dry!

Annie and I are up a bit early. Last night was one of those where I didn’t make it up the stairs for bed. I was hurting so bad and I was nauseous thanks to an inconsiderate bowl of ice cram. MusicMan was very kind and brought down my CPAP for me and I slept in one of the new recliners. Annie was not very happy with me because I wouldn’t let her sleep on my lap all night.

The dumb thing is the reason for my ouchy-grouchyness: I spent a good amount of time wrestling with the new cover that we got for my mom’s chair. Getting it just right in the nooks and crannies was very tough.

Today is when the company is coming and the house will just look how it looks for the most part. He’ll be here in about 4 hours. I don’t expect an immense burst of wellness and energy to swoop in and rescue me, although it would be nice!

I hope things are ok for you, swampy and all the other dopers down that way.

Forgot to add…

Thanks, BooFae and Swampy (and anyone else I forgot). I hope that this or some other job will show up and be just the right fit, soon.

Good Mornin’ Y’all! Up and caffeinatin’. YAWN ‘Tis < snerk > 69! < snerk > Amurrkin out and mostly cloudy with a predicted high of 80 and mostly N.O.S. for the day. Fall weather for us! We survived Helene as the storm actually went a little east of us. We got a ton o’ rain and ‘twas quite windy, matter of fact still is, but no cat 1 stuff. I woke up a little before two this mornin’ to answer the call of nature and heard the wind and rain. However, I went right back to sleep until about six-thirty. No damage to da cave or to the yahd and so forth as far as I can tell right now. I’ll go take another look when ‘tis light out, which should be about now. We shall continue our self declared RDOS curfew today as there is no where we want or need to go. There may be some localized floodin’, so I think it wise to stay put unless necessary. Sup shall be lemon chikin ‘n rice, green beans, roasted baby carrots, and rolls. Borin’, but it’ll feed.

Now I need more caffeine and to feed rumbly tummy. Then, onward into the day! Rah.

Happy Firday Y’all!

Hooray! So glad to hear you two are ok!

The only real advantage they have in this county is, thanks to the Amish, there are wide shoulders on most of the main roads (for their buggies) which effectively become bike lanes, albeit occasionally covered in horse poo. Of course, motorists have hit buggies, so there’s still risk for cyclists. Then again, a motorist hit FCD and totaled his vehicle, so no one is safe… We’re all doomed!!! :scream:

How I envision it:
Imgur

Woke to the sound of rain, but it’s not from Helene. We won’t see those effects till maybe Moanday, according to our local weather guessers. FCD and I have our meeting with our money guy today, then we’ll move our boat back to our marina (FINALLY) and maybe grab some lunch.

It’s laundry day, but I may put it off till tomorrow since we’ll be gone till mid-afternoon. I don’t want to be folding underwear while watching the news at 6. How uncivilized!!!

swampy - glad you didn’t get whomped! That was one hellaciously big storm! I see it did move east a bit, so you were on the less awful side of it. So good, clean living has paid off, right?

Daughter is due here around 1030-ish to keep Grandma company. Dunno when Jessica will come - she doesn’t know her schedule till she shows up at the office in the morning. But our appt with Dave is at 1130 and it shouldn’t take too long - mostly talking about what to do with all the gazillion of dollars he built up from our 401k rollovers.

OK, not gazillions, but he did good by us - the funds were on the conservative side and they would have a new minimum set annually so we wouldn’t go below that level, no matter what the markets did. We probably could have made more in some aggressive funds, but we’re old enough that we couldn’t take the risk. I think overall, we done good. No worried about moving into a refrigerator box under an overpass (especially since there are no overpasses in this county!) Before we go, I need to make note of our bank balances - he always asks.

For now, tho, it’s my quiet computer time - on to Not Always Right to read about stupid things people do and say.

Happy Firday!!

Mornin’ everyone.

It’s 59 degrees Fahrenheit and dark outside. Our high temperature is 69 degrees Fahrenheit with partly cloudy skies, and there might be a couple of rain showers in the next hour or two.

Swampy, I’m very glad you and OYKW are okay. I hope there isn’t any damage.

JtC, I hope you’re feeling much better today. I, too, am NOVID. I can’t believe I’ve been so lucky. It seems someone from work has it all the time.

Sticky Buns, it sounds like this job might be right for you, given the potential to pay off student loan debt and some of the other perks. I hope it works out.

The pups entered my WFH office overnight and chewed up my wrist pad. It was all over the floor this morning, so I was not a happy camper at 3:30 a.m. I usually keep that door shut overnight, so I’m unsure what happened there. I could have sworn it was closed when I went to bed last night.

Oh well. Today is Friday, and it’s my supposed short day. If I can get out in eight hours, it’ll be sweet, but I have a feeling that I’ll be pushing some last-minute stuff through because no one pays attention to deadlines.

The trail I walked last Saturday is popular with regular and e-bike cyclists. I’d say easily 50% of them were complete assholes and were not in favor of sharing the trail. It’s meant for both cyclists and walkers. Instead of ringing their bells and calling out “on your left,” they’d zoom up right behind us and expect us to move even though we were walking to the far side of the trail. It’s a comprehensive, paved path (former railbed) with plenty of room.

I need to finish my second cup of coffee and load the dishwasher. I hope you all have a peaceful, easy day.

Ate my share of government cheese.

As you know, there are jerks of all kinds out there. Do you read the comic Pearls Before Swine? It regularly makes fun of cyclists that take themselves too seriously - Jeff the Cyclist. I expect they’re from the same branch of the family tree that spawned shoppers in the electric carts who block aisles and leave the carts in the parking lot instead of putting them away. (If they can’t walk that far, how did they get into the store in the first place??)

My “bein’ po’” story: two days before payday, $20 to my name, needing gas in my car and groceries to feed my spouse and child. This was in the olden days when I wrote checks for everything, so I was able to kite the check by shopping late in the day so it wouldn’t be deposited till the next day, and I knew it wouldn’t be process before my paycheck was deposited. Wouldn’t work today, but it saved my butt way back then. Thankfully, I’ve never been in that position again. Close, but not quite…

And it’s after 8 - I should shower and dress, I guess.

Beside here, that is my other regular morning go-to (along with various webcomics and weather).

swampy, glad the worst of the weather missed you; I got rain (and more expected) but nothing severe, it stayed east of me and spent itself like General Sherman (marching through Georgia). Red and doggio may be getting a lot more of it that I did.

boo fae,

You could interpret that two ways, depending on how you define ‘lots’…and either would probably be correct. Glad you made it home ok, it’s nice when public transportation is fairly often, miss a bus here and you’re waiting 30-60 minutes for the next one.

{{Sticky Buns}}. Sorry something so good (ice cream) made you feel so bad.

Taters, Pups can be creative about getting into places,. hope the wrist pad can be replaced soon. And idiots come with living, albeit the ones on bicycles can be a chore to deal with at times…

Up early but no damages reported and will shortly get dressed and head to the bank and then the store for the Great October Shopping Trip. Then gas up car and see what else the weather has in store. Only 65F now and only getting to 70F so just maybe Fall has arrived.

And time to press on with Firday; have a good one all.

I’m glad all is well for you, I’ve been hearing that things got pretty messy during the night and some places are still without power.

Its wet and overcast but its stopped raining for the moment. The wind has picked up which might blow the storm away or might be blowing more in.

This was my fault. I picked an ethical doctor who wants to follow the rules and guidelines. If I’d gone with an online quack, I’d have my card now.

Dang about the ride home last night. Traveling while soggy just isn’t a whole lot of fun.

Thanks, I’m feeling ick, not ICK so that’s good. I’d still be in bed if GG didn’t know how to open doors.

Hubs has had COVID three times. By the time we knew he had it he was already contagious. We lived in the same house and slept in the same bed.

I’m about as pro-vax as it is possible to be.

GG knows ONE “trick”. He knows how to turn doorknobs and latches with is paws. He learned this while we were staying in hotels and I tried to keep him in the bathroom. Your dogs are bigger than GG and can probably get their mouths around a door knob quite easily.

At least nowadays single people are allowed to get SNAP and state medical, I wasn’t eligible when I really needed them. Being able to get low cost housing back when I needed it would have been so helpful, its hard for a single person to claw their way out of poverty when they are paying over half of their meager take home pay on rent and utilities.

The rain just started again. I’m starting to feel better now that I’ve got myself around a cup of coffee, maybe I’ll have another one and a bowl of ice cream to see if that makes me feel up to going to the pool. Or Maybe I’ll just sit her and smoke weed while watching the rain.

I was on the 100 Table all day. Which is good, because apparently Blue 128 was more FUBAR than yesterday. It’s currently raining and windy(20MPH gusts). not bad for a tropical storm on the other side of the Appalachians. Spot killed a bug while I was shaving. By stomping it. Then he ate it. I had Aldi bran flakes for a less squirmy breakfast.

Just keep 'em away from Richard Gere.

{{{{Sticky}}}}

Yay!

I had military housing, but I had four kids (yeah, my fault) and military pay was for shit back then.

At least he cleaned up after himself.

Hubs has been thinking about how to make me feel better and decided that I need to eat some fair food. Its supposed to clear up around five so we will leave after he feeds the fuzzbutts. Here’s hoping most of the vendors showed up.

My military pay was pretty crap too but at least I had the chow hall. While I was a food stamp worker, I was still approving food stamps for military people. It pissed me off every time.

If not for military housing and the fact that we were diligent about not running up debt, we’d likely have been needing those, too. I drove my '71 station wagon for 13 years to avoid any more car payments.

It has rained all night and is still lightly drizzling. It’s been so dry the last couple of months that the water isn’t soaking in right away, so there are a lot of puddles. It is supposed to continue for the rest of the day and into the night.

While Nelson kills June bugs and meeses, he’s strictly a trophy hunter.

Over the years, I’ve worked quite a few low wage jobs. Had food stamps been available to single folks back then, I would have qualified. Even so, I qualified for government cheese, peanut butter, powdered milk, or whatever else they were handing out in the mid-eighties and took advantage of the commodities given.

Up, caffeinating, breakfasted, bed stripped and remade, laundry done, most of the houseirk done (only sweeping and roll suck left) and after, getting sheveled to go to the grocery store. I may go out to a benefit performance this evening for a local musician who just passed and left a lot of medical debt for his family. A couple of my favorite local bands will be playing.

Stay safe and healthy y’all!

Afternoon all. The Great October Shopping Trip is done, needed to visit two stores as the first one had empty shelves for about 5 items I had on my list. The other one had what I needed in abundance so probably should have gone there first (I have 3 Krogers within 5 miles of my house…why, I don’t know). At least I have built up a ton of Kroger points so filling the gas yank won’t be too painful. Am eating some lunch now and will then look to do my swimmin;, I’ve already called off soccer practice due to the weather. Rain has stopped for the moment but is expected back soon.

Onward into the day…

I hope all you Mumpers in the path of Helene are doing all right. I’m sitting in a bone-dry yard on the morning of a day that’s predicted to get into the 90’s and the end of a second bone-dry week, heading into another week of no rain and high temps. The only signs that it’s September and not June are the browning leaves on some trees and the cooler lows at night (which are a godsend). If only there was a practical way to move some of your excess water to us!

Khoshekh decided he likes pizza earlier this week. He ate an estimated three and a half slices of one I forgot in its box on the counter and by the time I realized the pizza had onions, it was too late to get his little stomach pumped. He was excited for breakfast as usual, though, and it wasn’t until he slept through dinner that I started to worry. I was able to contact an online vet who did some calculations for me about the volume of onion vs. the size of cat and reassured me that he wasn’t in any immediate danger. If we can’t keep him out of alliums and other dangerous foods, I fear that his prospects for reaching a healthy old age aren’t good.

In other first-world problem news, we finally got someone out to fix the soap dispenser in our dishwasher. While he was replacing the part, he discovered that the wiring harness was rotted out, presumably from leaking rinse aid, and that’s on backorder. Which means that instead of tossing a detergent pod in 16 minutes after starting the machine, we have to do all the dishes by hand. I’m trying to think of it as a Zen exercise rather than a PITA, but that’s getting harder as the time passes. Ironically, I’m keeping the sink and counters cleaner now that I have a soapy dishrag in my hand every day!
