It’s a trope in old movies that a character would put a shot of alcohol into his coffee, and call it a ‘sweetener’.
Back in, say, the '40s and '50s, what was the alcohol of choice? Scotch was popular back then. (I wonder if Americans included Irish whiskey when they thought of ‘scotch’.) But bourbon (another whisky) was and is very popular too. And then there’s rum…

Happy TGI-almost-F, everyone!
The mobile groomer just arrived (rescheduled from Sunday afternoon), and I brought Bailey out to the van while giving him her CV: 16 years old, arthritis, muscle weakness that means her hind legs will collapse when he brushes/washes back there (he just needs to put an arm under her belly and hold her up), doesn’t like the use of a Dremel on her nails, etc. Even though I know she’s perfectly safe, a tiny part of me is slightly uneasy that she’s out of my sight. We’ll both be happy/relieved when she’s all neat and clean and back in the house. He said it would take 60-90 minutes, which is about right for the whole shebang.
This afternoon I need to prep a formal deliverable for my contract that’s due soon, but I won’t start/be able to focus on that until the dog is done – not out of worry for her, just because I’ll need to concentrate and not be interrupted once I get started (and there’s really no way to know when she’ll be ready). So I just ate lunch, and here I am for a bit.
I’m looking forward to a quiet weekend. I’ll have a personal training session on Saturday (around noon), but otherwise I have no plans. Oh, remember the Lego message board change I said would give me something to do this weekend? Yeah…I did it last night.
I’m really happy with how it came out! Guess I’ll have to figure out another way to entertain myself this weekend. Heh. (I’m not worried: I have coloring books, a piano, and a bajillion streaming services…)
I was supposed to have a virtual voice lesson this afternoon, but my voice teacher is sick so now it’ll be tomorrow. Which means I only have one more meeting today, and it’ll be a short one: it’s a proposal status meeting, but we don’t have a due date yet so right now we’re just targeting a preliminary review on Tuesday morning. My sections do need some work between now and COB Monday, but I’ve always been a “last minute” writer so I’ll do it either tomorrow afternoon and/or over the weekend (maybe even a little on Monday afternoon…heh).

Husband BFF is a Coke drinker, and is a big fan of all of the “limited edition” Oreo flavors (even the utterly insane ones): when I saw the Coke-flavored Oreos in my grocery store a couple of weeks ago, I immediately texted him a picture and asked if he knew about them. He said he’d been waiting a month for them to be released! I offered to pick up a package, and I gave them to him on Saturday. I should ask if he’s tried one yet. He’d already tried the Oreo-flavored Coke, and said it was bleh.
I went back with some trepidation at noon to wake MIL. Thankfully, she twitched as I entered, so I knew she was probably alive. But I was concerned - she slept almost 15 hours! I don’t want to be the one to find her…
Looking at Helene’s path, I shall now worry about swampy till the storm fizzles.
Irk rant. There is a company that sends alerts to their clients. A certain client relies on these alerts because they can only sell to licensed contractors. If they are not licensed, the client has no lien rights to the property and that makes it very difficult to work with the property owner who disputes the bill. The trouble is, the alerting company has dropped the ball.
Things were going smoothly until the company was sold. Things went smoothy with the new company until they disabled the old company’s domain and I couldn’t upload data. After a long time, our president (or former president now, though he’s still on the Board) contacted a person there who is a ‘local’ and with whom he’s friends. I was able to email data to him, as opposed to using a secure Filezilla connection. In the meantime, the business was sold again. The company is not sending all of the alerts they should be sending… which is a problem for our member.
The situation is frustrating because we only send the data and handle the billing. Client issues are between the alerting company and our members. There’s nothing we can do about the alerting company’s falling down. I’ve sent emails to the one contact I have (former president’s acquaintance), and he’s been unresponsive; so I asked El Jefe to intervene.
No contact with the contact. No contact with the a new contact El Jefe found. The company website doesn’t have a phone number. All communications must go through email or chat. Chat isn’t working. El Jefe finally got a phone number and got through to a person at the company that bought the company that bought the company. She was like, ‘Oh, this is a third-party vendor.’ El Jefe was like, ‘No, you own the company.’ She looked into it and found he was right. The company doesn’t even know what it does! What a Charlie Foxtrot.
El Jefe says if this isn’t resolved by early next week, we should tell the few members who use the service that we will no longer be forwarding their data to the alerting company, and that they’ll have to make their own arrangements.
When? I like that sort of thing. I don’t think what you’ve shown is weird, I think its fun!
Of course you are, you left your baby with a stranger. I’d worry too.
I like your new sign, its very happy looking.
Went to the Dr. and he looked at my x-rays and then apologized to me. He said he had thought that I wasn’t in enough pain to qualify for MMJ because I didn’t act like I was in constant pain. He thought I just wanted to get high. I told I didn’t act like I was in severe pain because I was always high. He’ll have the paperwork ready for me to send to the state on Monday.
He said he could get it ready tomorrow, but I plan to loll around in bed all day and if I do get up, I won’t want to put a bra on.
He also said that he thought that swimming after getting shots was a great idea because it would get the vax circulating through my body and hopefully reduce the swelling and soreness. I’m going to try to make it to class tomorrow, I’m sure the water would help with the fever and soreness but historically I’ve been hit pretty hard.
The local bus just went by. It amuses me that “my” driver always flashes the lights as she passes our house. Between my crappy eyes and the tinted bus windows, I am never sure if she’s the driver so I just wave at all the busses when I see them.
Went to hear the Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra today. Music by somebody named Maurice; it was a Ravelation.
Came home and made spaghetti sauce from scratch using home-canned tomatoes, Italian sausage, garlic, herbs, some red wine. Washed down with a nice 2016 Montepulciano. Me so stuffed.
Low tire light came on. I’m hoping it’s not a leak, as I went through that once already since we moved here. Although, given all the construction work going on in the 'hood, it wouldn’t surprise me if I picked up a screw again. Off to Costco tomorrow to let them air me up.
I took a quick ride on BIL’s e-bike. I can’t recall the last time I rode a bike, so that was part of it. And it had straight handlebars rather than curved ones, and I always hated straight ones. But I suppose I could get used to it. The power assist, tho, is really neat!
MIL was awake less than 2 hours, then went back to sleep. She’s up now and I assume she’ll stay up till supper. Then, who knows. I keep remembering my one aunt who lay down for a nap and never got up. Gee, keep a happy thought.
Howdy Y’all! So far just moderate rain, but the fun stuff is comin’ later this evenin’ and overnight if TWPTB are to be believed. There is a local seven p.m. curfew in effect, not that we care as we imposed our own curfew yestiddy and have not left da cave. The furtherest (fartherest?) I’ve been is to the mailbox. It’s good to be a inside and dry RDOS.
All this talk of French toast let to us havin’ a brunch of that, bacon, and scrambled aigs. Thus we were well-fed. We have plenty of sammich makin’s and so forth, so we shall not starve. Plus we have the propane grill for cookin’ purposes if need be.
Sticky_Buns hope the interview went well.
Taters of course you had a good review. They still don’t pay you enough. This I say with confidence, is the opinion of all of mumperland.
OK, on to other excitatin’ RDOS activities such as Neflix, chill and popcorn.
Afternoon all. Pedaling and walking accomplished and the rain looks like it will stay to the East long enough to get our soccer game in, but it’s going to be a very wet night.
doggio, had never heard of ‘Malk’ before and after reading about it, doubt I’ll wnat to hear about it again.
Oopsie, hope the grooming went well. Like the Lego reshuffle.
FCM, I know that you don’t want to be the one to find her deceased, but the odds are one of you will someday. Take care and be strong.
flyboy, sometimes I think Capitalism is totally run by people who are living examples of the Peter Principle…
JtC, yeah on getting the MMJ soon. And ‘your’ bus driver probably shared your kindness with her co-workers…
cookie, did you wear a bolero?
Take care swampy.
OK, need to cheage to soccer stuff and get ready to head out. Take care all.
The new remote control for the Blu-Ray player arrived, so now we can watch DVDs and Blu-Rays again. (I put in Jonny Quest, and I’ll watch a couple of episodes.)
And now I’m starting to feel crappy and my joints are getting sore. I’m probably heading off to bed soon, but at least I know I’ll be feeling much better this time tomorrow.
The interview was apparently good. They want me back for an in person one early next week. There’s good news and bad news, the pay is not very good, but you’re assigned to a school so you work the school’s schedule including winter break and summer break off.
I’m currently sitting and taking a knee break. We are in “clean the house for company” mode. But, there’s only so much that I can do at once. A friend of my mom’s is coming to visit her but we’re not sure which day. We did, however, recognize that it’s probably a good idea to hire a cleaning service every once in a while in the future because it’s very hard for us to do, physically. There’s a service locally who employs women in recovery from drugs and alcohol and they’re coming out to give us an estimate next week.
