lucky for you the busy season is around the corner …
Feeling particularly blurf-y today. Thank heavens the cooler weather has returned, but my mojo certainly hasn’t.
Anyone have several hours’ sleep I can borrow?
Got a text from management apologizing for the inconvenience, they had a system error or some such nonsense, blah blah hafta reschedule the inspection for next week.
They pulled this exact same shit last year, and it’s annoying and disruptive as all hell.
Oh, and they were very proud of themselves for leaving a pair of smoke detectors by my side door … a coupla days after the maintenance guy came by to replace them AND re-install one in the bedroom, which is above my pay grade as a tenant.
So now I have an extra pair, I guess? After not having any at all for months?
Last load in the washer, towels in the dryer, MIL napping, Higgs snoring, FCD waiting till it’s time to go back to the boatyard and watch them refloat our boat after a little touch-up paint.
He talked to his aunt, apparently UncleJ is no longer able to speak. I don’t know what that says about the progression of Parkinson’s, but it can’t be positive.
I hate to ask what’s next…
Cut up the 4 pound bone-in pork shoulder this morning to make the stew. After trimming out the bone and the hard fat, it barely came to two pounds, so a quick trip to the market was necessary. I’m freezing the bone to make stock at a later date. Anyway, the whole mess is simmering on the stove as I type this. I’ll check it in a couple of hours. Still need to chop up some green onions and shred some queso fresco for garnish. Also slice a lime and chop some cilantro. And heat some torts. I need a nap.
Saw you mention cilantro.
Sorry to riff on this spice…but here goes.
I discovered awhile ago I have the cilantro soap gene which I had never heard of. But made total sense when I thought back to several restaurant dishes that tasted like the pink urinal cakes in men’s bathrooms.
Catching up on sleep and cat-pampering should take care of one day.
I apparently do, too. Loads of fun when I live in California, and like both Mexican and several varieties of Asian food.
OK, I have to ask - how do you know what urinal cakes taste like???
Yeah, cilantro tastes nasty to me also. I recall waaaaay back in 9th grade general science, Mr. McGuire gave everyone a little strip of paper to taste. Something like 4% of the population would taste nothing, but to the rest it would be bitter. I was not in the 4% - it was nasty! I vaguely recall it was some sort of enzyme issue. Are you impressed that I’d remember something from 1969??
Last load of laundry is in the dryer. I got in touch with the electric company and straightened out the billing issue. FCD is headed back to the boat - it won’t be moved till the head electrician guy comes back next week - he needs to do a full inspection. And so it goes.
Supper will be popcorn shrimp from the air fryer and maybe salad on the side. That’s as far ahead as I’ve thought.

100+ posts since my last visit! I did something between a skim and a read, and I think I’m caught up on all of the major stuff. Welcome, Six…and nice to see ya, GodBod!
I spent most of Tuesday at an in-person meeting: I got home right before 3pm, then spent the rest of the day catching up. Wednesday wasn’t bad, but there was a steady-enough stream of things to do that I never got a chance to post (or read). Yesterday, my direct report came back from vacation and at first it seemed like I’d finally be able to return to the MMP…but then I learned that I had to go to the office and clear out my cubicle. (No, I wasn’t fired!)
There’s a new mandate that employees who support corporate activities (vs those, like me, who support gov’t customers) must return to the office 3x/week, and management is suddenly realizing that they’ve let a lot of office space go since 2020 and they don’t actually have enough desks. My program has had a dedicated suite with ~15 cubicles, but no one really goes to the office anymore – and, when we do, we use conference rooms – so the corporate folks are taking it over. We heard Wednesday afternoon that it was likely to happen, and got told yesterday morning that it was definitely happening. I wasn’t given any kind of deadline for clearing out my cubicle, but was told the turnover would happen “soon”: when both of my afternoon meetings got cancelled, I decided to take advantage of the unexpected quiet (and the nice weather) and go take care of it.
Our admin and I were the only ones who still had assigned cubicles. She goes in 1x/week and was also there yesterday, clearing out her cubicle and being relocated down the hall. I can’t stand hot-desking if I’m going to be in the office with any regularity, and I’d fought to hang onto an assigned cubicle in case we ever had any kind of “return to the office” thing, but it hasn’t shaken out that way…so, it was a no-brainer to simply take everything home. I knew I had a lot of stuff there after 4.5 years – monitor stands, webcams, mugs from every place I’ve worked, a small challenge coin collection, etc. – but I’d forgotten about the narrow wire shelves, seat cushion, foot rest, extra keyboard and mouse, and a few other things! Luckily, I took enough bags there: I filled 2 backbacks, 1 medium-sized tote bag, and 1 XXXL tote bag, but I still had to put a few loose things (like the shelves) in the trunk.
Yesterday evening I unpacked/found homes for the stuff in the XXXL tote bag, which included the monitor stands, mugs, and challenge coins. I still have the other tote bag and both backpacks to go through; that will be this weekend’s project. Today is the first day in 30 years that I don’t have an assigned desk (not counting time off between jobs). It’s actually perfect timing, though, because over the past couple of weeks I’ve been rearranging and reorganizing a bunch of stuff in the house – including getting new shelves for my sheet music – and I have some free space. Less now that the mugs and coins are displayed, but I should be able to find homes for everything else.
I have no plans this evening, other than possibly tackling a tote bag/backpack.
Tomorrow morning I’ll be going to the county government center for election officer training. When I provided my availability for the November election back in July, I indicated a willingness to be a Provisional Ballot Specialist – which I’ve been for the last two elections I worked – and they’re recommending in-person refresher classes for that position. I’m not crazy about having to set an alarm on a Saturday, but the refresher can’t hurt (I’ve taken it before, but there could be new processes/procedures) and all told I’ll be out of the house for less than 3 hours. I also have an early afternoon personal training session, but after that I’ll have no plans for the remainder of the weekend.
Yes: in addition to shoe’s mention of eating at work, you’re missing the fact that not everyone lives in a house where there’s usually bread, butter, and cheese.
If those things are around, then sure a frozen grilled cheese sandwich could be the height of laziness (and are definitely more expensive). But I live alone and never buy those things, so frozen sandwiches are the only way I ever get a grilled cheese at home. The Lunchables ones use crispers, and actually turn out pretty good in the microwave! (There’s a Toaster Grills brand that I see a lot, but I don’t own a toaster and there’s no microwave option so I haven’t tried them.)
Woo hoo!
Our system is called IMPACT. There’s a “shopping mall” where you can spend awards, but I always immediately turn mine into Amazon gift cards.
Build Lego sets?
(sigh)
Afternoon all. Am now the owner of three Refrigerator water filters and tow pairs of 40x32 relaxed fit Ballroom Jeans from Duluth Trading. Went to the gym but the pool was full with others waiting and the whirlpool heater is still broken, so came on home and had a mid-day snack of pancakes and bacon, so that should hold me until after soccer practice. Very cloudy and humid but only 80F and a 1-in-10 chance of rain.
JtC, I can understand one of you being there, but if the other is only a phone call and a few minutes away…
But, but…Id have to get stuff out of the refrigerator, and get a pan to grill it on, and then have to clean up and put stuff back where I found it…(the eternal difference between men and women)…
Hope the Brewpub trip is not a FUBAR, red
shoe, I’d loan you the hours, but with soccer tonight and tomorrow I think I’ll be using up my reserves. As for the extra smoke detectors, I’d suggest EBay, but they’d want them back right after you sent them off.
Oopsie, ah, the Great Desk Reshuffle, I remember it well (not fondly, mind you, bu well).
And onward through the day.
Yeah, it’s not my favorite thing, either. I put it on the table for others who do enjoy it, as the meal is not just about me.
Speaking of this meal, the wife suggested serving it over rice rather than fooling around with torts. So ima do it.
I have it as well which makes me sad. I love Mexican food and cilantro is used so often. I know that other people really enjoy the flavor and I’m missing out on something good.
That’s too many choices for my non creative mind. It does sound very pretty, though. I’ll keep my eyes open for something like that for the living room because it is next.
Super boring. I like my theory better!
Well, dang. Two days off in a row is always nice, but money is usually better.
I agree. The more I think about it, the more I think that boarding them would be a Very Bad Idea and probably wouldn’t even save any money. Plus, we can grab breakfast at the Holiday Inn after putting the cats in the room. If Hubs needs me to give him a break, he can call me.
Dang, just looked at the time. I need to get dinner started. Pork chops and gravy with cornbread stuffing and peas. Ice cream for desert.
I’ve been so busy that I haven’t been able to walk for the past eight days. I did get out today. I was feeling a little stiff. It took almost 1:08 to walk 3.1 miles. So… less than 3 mph.
But at least I got out for a walk.
Have read much, retained little. I hope all the Dope is well, and that all you Mumpers are having a good last gasp of summer!
Things have been busy with the start of school. Overlyboy is in college now and his dad misses him so much - I do, too, but the husband unit hadn’t anticipated just how much he would miss our kid. Overlygirl is doing really well in high school, but we hardly ever see her since she’s in fall sports.
Also, I’m about to apply for my boss’s job. So that’ll be interesting. I don’t think I’ll necessarily get it, but it’ll be a good exercise - I haven’t applied for a new job in almost seven years now.
I’m freaking tired today. Ugh, and I completely forgot to do a task I’d meant to do that can only be done during business hours. Shoot - next week, I suppose.
Howdy Y’all! Really has been a day of high RDOS inactivity. General overall uselessness, nappage, and day drinkin’ have helped pass the time. ‘Tis been rainy since mid-mornin’, so we sat out on the back porch watchin’ it rain whilst sippin’ on adult beverages. Sup was leftovers from Hump Day’s sup. I forgot to mention that this mornin’ so hope nobody was worried we sat around starvin’ all day. Next up is Netflix, chill, and popcorn.
Six glad the car fix was easy and not 'spensive.
shoe I don’t object to like frozen ham 'n cheese sammiches and the like. Frozen grilled cheese, however, is just wrong. Some things are just wrong.
taters I figured that about Zoe and hubs. Maybe he seems cold and distant when talkin’ about them, because he is sad they are so far away. Hope the pups do well with their fixes. Glad son is doin’ better.
red think I forgot to say this. Conga rats on the irk recognition. It’s nice to be noticed for good stuff.
JtC seems to me you’d be happier knowin’ the cats are happy in a motel room with one of their hoomans. If hubs just insists someone needs to be there whilst the windows are bein’ replaced, well then let him be there. We were both in da cave when the windows were replaced six years ago. It was a very mild day so no need for heat or a/c. Plus we could watch teevee, mess around on teh intartoobz, read and so forth. It was noisy but they were done within five hours, so that was no problem. However, we did not have critters to contend with. Also, you win the sup of the day award. YUM!
Cookie smart move savin’ the bone for stock. It irks me that some folk will throw away a perfectly good pork or beef bone instead of makin’ a wunnerful stock. Plus a good bone makes a wunnerful seasonin’ for greens and such.
Oopsie in case I have not said so, I salute your willingness to be a poll worker. I cannot imagine ever doin’ such a thing myself, but love those who do.
doggio it’s kolledge football season and you have adult beverages. That’s Sattidy done and dusted.
MetalMouse < snerk > ballroom < snerk > jeans! OK, I will cut you some slack on frozen grilled cheese sammiches since makin’ a real one could possibly cut into your RDOS inactivities.
Talkie glad you checked in. It’s tough when a fledglin’ leaves the nest. Shall we cross appropriate/inappropriate appendages re the job?
Its raining here; did I mention I hate rain?
Having a cuke & tomato salad. I’m feeling like making perogies and beddar cheddar sausages for Sup.
Laundry’s done. Boat is in the water. FCD is home. MIL continues to make me crazy.
I was going to make popcorn shrimp since she really likes it. But she said she’d like a burger. Then she said shrimp would be OK. Then she said she didn’t care - whatever we wanted. Then she said she wanted a burger. So we got burgers. She couldn’t even finish half of her burger - we’ll see if she eats the rest for lunch tomorrow.
FWIW, WaWa makes an OK burger - it’s actually bigger around than the bun, unlike most fast food burgers. Plus it’s close - only 3 miles from us, so that’s a point in its favor.
Day is done. I’ll rollsuck tomorrow. The rest of tonight is for chillage.
Thinking about sup, pulled an unsuccessful rice thingy out of the fridge and walked it out to the compost to glomp it in there. I discovered I have teeny tiny concord grapes. I mean I always thought that it looked like grape leaves, but this is the first time in 20 years here that I’ve seen fruit.
Tomorrow is looking busy. Mowage, gotta sweep the leaves off the back deck (I should reverse the order of those so’s the leaves get mulched), laundry, and probably a trip for groceries. yay
I’m tahred. T-U-R-D tahred. (Dadism)
Finished irk for the week. Still have over 40 issues to get to. Took a shower. I think I might be tired because I’m hungry. I had a cheese omelette-and-(4) bacon sandwich for breakfast around 0830. It’s now half-four, so that was seven hours ago.
Wifey, RN went out to see a new patient this morning, and returned just before I went for my walk. (only averaged 2.77 mph, BTW ). I thought she was only going to see the one patient, and then spend the rest of the day doing paperwork; but she was gone when I got home, so I guess she’s having a busy Friday. She had five patients yesterday. Usually she tries to make Friday a light day.
Hmmm…. What can I remember to comment on?
Taters, I know you’re just observing and I’m piggybacking on that, but, ya know, sometimes that’s when autism makes a significant appearance with a sudden change as you’ve described.
JtC, I don’t know why you, nor anyone else can figure out that you need PURPLE drapes!!!
BooFae, hope you’re feeling better now!
GodBod, congrats on the Dean’s list!
MetalMouse, what exactly is the difference between a ‘cheeburger’ and a ‘cheeseburger’??
All ye soapy cilantro tasters…. Have you ever discovered or heard that you are or might be a super taster? I am.
I’m hungry and about to go check on the roast, but before I do, here’s my day: The neighbor gave me some old spoons to make art with, but some of them were actually sterling so I spent way too long trying to shine them for her and then gave them back. I also got wind of another job that is online that might be a nice addition to my upcoming job that I’ll start in two weeks that is Mondays only.
The least exciting part of my day is when I found out that the last doctor that I saw, in spite of the referral, is out of network. So, I am scheduled to see yet another doctor on Monday and we start the dance of waiting for a new, and correct, knee MRI again! I am at least glad that I was able to find a doctor to see so soon even if I have to drive an hour to get there.
Ok, off to check on dinner!
It is now settled. I told him that my imaginary friends said I should loll around in a hotel room all day while he is babysitting the house. Or maybe I’ll loll around in the hot tub while the cats are napping on the bed. GG knows all about staying in motel rooms and Jolene is fearless so I’m sure they will just check things out and then do cat things all day.
Looking at the hotel pics, they have a pancake machine. I just love those, you pour some pancake batter through a hole on one end of a heated conveyor belt while it moves the batter under hot lights and extrudes an elongated football shaped pancake from the other end of the machine. They remind me of how much fun I had with our easy bake oven. I don’t like pancakes so have never used one, but it always tickles me when I see one.
I’ll bet the breakfast ladies hate them, I’ve rarely seen one without someone with a sponge standing close to hand.
Sup was yum. Hubs proclaimed it to be worth the clean-up.
My cornbread is crumbly so we always lose a couple of pieces before we finish eating it all. (It is too dry, I know this but it has taken me years to perfect Hubs memory of his mother’s cornbread - without ever eating a bite of it because she never once made cornbread while we were visiting.) I put the crumbles in a quart container and toss it in the freezer. When the container is full, that is enough to use for stuffing.
I was just going to quietly wonder if they came with a black bow tie or a white one.
Never say never, you might be surprised. It’s probably time for you to update your resume anyhow, so like you said…good exercise.
Awwww! Throw some compost their way, maybe they will grow big and tasty.
Well thank goodness we have you here, I’d have never figured it out myself!!!
I like broccoli and happily snack on celery so I’m pretty sure I am not a super taster.
That is super sweet of you.
I can’t get the MRIs of my back and hip because the imaging center got absorbed by a bigger one and the records didn’t transfer over. Now we hafta start all over. I got my back and hip x-rays today which was very uncomfortable. I super hope they show enough that my doctor won’t order another MRI, they are so horrible.
After the x-rays, I stopped at the grocery sto for some stone fruit and a can of Underwood deviled chicken jumped into my cart. I haven’t seen that since we moved to AZ, I used to look for it when Dad came to visit. I’m sure it won’t taste nearly as good as my childhood memories of Dad making us samwiches (white bread, mustard, Underwood chicken spread and a slice of sweet onion) but I’m sure going find out.
