G’morrrrnin’ everyone. GodBod’s back for their bi-annual return to this place!
Jokes aside, hope y’all are doing okay. I’ve just started my fall semester already. Time really flies. Summer went well, by the way. Did way better than I did in spring and even got on the Dean’s list! Thankfully in the fall I have two in-person classes; I was getting real tired of being caged at home all the time. I am taking two online alongside that, though, so I’ll have double the workload I did in the summer. It’s probably fine though; I only took two small summer classes to give myself something to do, so going back to full-time should be no biggy.
I should look into working somewhere part-time though, I’ve been meaning to for a while. One of my cousins mentioned to me at a gathering recently that Kwik Trip pays pretty alright and depending on your position you could listen to personal music on the job too. So maybe I could stock the freezers for minimum wage? I don’t know, the thought irks me because I strongly dislike capitalism, but seems I don’t have much choice here…
Went for a walk again today, the usual dozen blocks or so with some uphill grades. I did some warmup stretches this time (duh), so the hips weren’t bothering me as much. Gonna try to keep up this routine as long as the weather allows.
We’ve got friends coming tomorrow for dinner, so I’ve got to get started on the adovada today. Then youngest son and his girls are coming over on Sunday. I just love those kids. They’re so full of life and the oldest hasn’t hit sulky teens yet. I’ll be writing him a substantial check to keep him afloat during his trials.
This building borders on a very wealthy neighborhood in MSP. Very nice homes, some of which could be considered mansions. They have manicured yards to match, but I noticed today that there is a boring sameness to them. They all have the same flowers and same shrubs, and usually a large expanse of lawn. I prefer less grass and a bit more wildness, I guess.
It’s also clear to me that “pedestrians have the right of way” is merely a suggestion in this city. None of the cars I encountered today even slowed down, let alone stopped for me. Stop signs are also just a suggestion, apparently, as I nearly got hit three times yesterday coming back from the dentist. And I thought Portland drivers were reckless and inconsiderate!
Another day of double sliding. They’re trimming back on OT, so they are staggering me, the Senior Clerk, and WB so things get done without payroll. I did my Teeter Senior Day shopping. The produce department was weird. Most of the bananas were lime green, but half the rest of the department was on clearance. I guess nobody ate a frickin’ salad over Labor Day weekend.
So I shouldn’t mention that I’m having food, glorious food for breakfast?
HAPPY BIRTHDAY FCDaughter!!!

Well, you can’t start the Revolution of the Proletariat on an empty stomach. Welcome back!
There were multiple people running through traffic on the way home. But with all the left or right turns in the area, it’s probably just as safe.
yest. was a wild day. my first plan for the day was a readcation. then my allergist wanted an office visit. coordinating with the shots schedule, and it landed on reading day.
i started the book with a nice leisurely breakfast. (the main character also had an omlette but not french fries.) i then walked into centre city for the appt. shopping along the way.
they decided i should have pulminary testing as well as shots and the office visit.
as the shuttle starts at 4pm and it was 2:15, i decided not to walk home, but stop at the reading terminal get a snack and beverage and then take the 3pm tour of the masonic temple.
i always wondered about that place. it did not disappoint. the rooms go from sparsely decorated (gothic) to highly decorated (egyptian). the egyptian room is very accurate, hieroglyphic wise. i really liked the stary ceiling. just amazing.
I had a Jimmy Dean’s Hot Sausage patty (I cut two marks on the package, then flattened it with the little cast-iron pan it would be cooked in) on toast, topped with an over-easy egg (cooked in the same pan, in the drippings, plus some extra Omega 3 margarine).
When FCD got back from his dental appt and errands, I had to run out for milk because I didn’t realize we were almost out. When I got home, MIL was up, so I took down the rest of the curtains to be washed. They’re in the machine right now.
I had tossed them on my recliner while gathering the ones from the bedroom, and for whatever reason, MIL tried to sort thru them looking for her clothes - even after watching us take them down and pile them on the chair. She’s confused more than not - three times within 20 minutes she asked Alexa what day it is. And after sleeping till after noon, she’s asleep again in her chair. I can’t imagine what it’s like in her mind.
Anyway, here’s hoping none of this last load needs to be ironed.
Hubs just hung our new bedroom drapes. The house came with mini-blinds and lace draperies so I’ve been replacing them one room at a time. That includes getting rid of all of those flimsy thin flat tube curtain rods and replacing them with rods sturdy enough for insulated drapes. Hubs gets his feelings hurt if I do that sort of thing so it has been going slower than I would like.
I’m still undecided about my room. I’m thinking I want green drapes to frame the forest, but maybe I want a deep rose to pull in all of the needlework pieces I have on the walls. I start looking at da jungle and there are just too many choices.
I don’t remember when I bought the curtains and comforter set for the guest room (now MIL’s room) but I think this is the first time I’ve washed the curtains. And as i went to hang them, I noticed loops sewn across the back of the top. Dunno how I missed them when I pushed the curtain rods thru the top placket last time. But I used them this time and they hang so much nicer! Anyway, all curtains are clean and back on their respective windows. Go me!
Not sure what, if anything, I’ll make for supper. It might be a cereal night. Or grilled cheese.
Speaking of which, I saw frozen grilled sammiches in Food Lion. I understand the appeal of convenience food, but really? Is making a grilled cheese sammich that inconvenient? Am I missing something here? Kids these days… < grumble grumble >
Last week I got a bunch of completion notices for report corrections I submitted, that would actually be completed on Friday. (i.e., ‘This has been completed. The new reports will be available in a day or two.’) Only, I was off on Friday. Monday was a holiday. And it’s the first week of the month, and files are pouring in. I’m used to being busy with the datalanche, but now I also have a dozen reports I need to pull and make sure BMCRA fixed them correctly. And one of the Account Executives wanted some things, and expects me to drop everything for her. Then there was a long phone call with the woman I used to work with at BMCRA 20 years ago to fix an issue I mentioned in another thread. Then there was another long phone call with one of our members who hasn’t sent data in a while and is getting it sorted out.
Tl;dr: I’m very busy.
I’ve been too busy to go on my walks, but I intended to today. But something came up. I got an email from my credit union saying ‘Good News! We’re changing your checking account! It will only cost you $8.95 per month… unless you maintain a balance of $10,000!’ So right about the time I was going to go on my walk, I had to call them to say WTF? I was on hold a long time. It turns out that they have a different ‘option’ that’s only $6.95/month… unless I have direct deposits of at least $2,500/month. OK, my salary is deposited directly, so I won’t have a fee. I was especially annoyed at having to deal with this a couple of months after they unilaterally upgraded my credit card and I had to go and change account numbers if I wanted to shop online.
But wait! There’s more! I have another checking account that I have for my sad-sack sister’s use. It doesn’t have direct deposit, so it’s subject to the monthly $6.95 fee. The only way to avoid the fee is to close the checking account and have my sister use the savings account. That means her debit card needs to be replaced with an ATM card. I had to call to let her know. So then I had to listen to her confusion about her insurance, where they billed her twice the normal amount – probably because her payment and their billing crossed in the mail. This led to her eyeglasses woes. Her driver’s license expired, and under California law she has to take tests because of how old she is. But she couldn’t pass the eye test because her new glasses don’t work. So I was treated to a tale of how the glasses place did the prescription, and how they put the red dot ‘here’ instead of ‘there’. I told her I had to get back to work.
I’m still annoyed, but I think I’m calm enough to get back to the data. I’m sure not getting out for a walk today. Or having lunch. There’s one slice of pizza left in the fridge from last week. Maybe I can just eat it cold.
The more I look at colors, the more I realize I can’t find any green as wonderful as what is out there.
I have too much going on with my needlepoint pieces for patterns to work well. I think it would be too busy looking but it could work very well in a different room.
Perhaps wait until winter. Looks to me like most of that green will go away come fall. I’ve got what looks like a jungle at the end of my yard, but it all goes away in the cold.
Oh, there are a few evergreens, but it’s mostly deciduous. It’s starting to turn colors now, I’m looking forward to watching that as well. So…now I’m back to green because rose clashes with red and orange.
I got ACE points (the rewards system at irk) from not only my supe, but the supe in the department to which I transfer stuff. They’re not high dollar (I could get a gift card for $25 from a number of vendors or buy from the selection of other stuff they offer), but being recognized for being competent feels good. There is a cycle count for one of my locations this weekend and my priority was clearing that location of as much product as possible. While I was doing that this morning, the other supe came to me and asked if I had any product for transfer today. I told him yes and gave him a time line and he said that that kept him from sending several people home. Being Thursday, I’m not sure if his people were cheering or cursing, but hey, they got work.
MIL has got it in her head that she can fly, by herself, to Indianapolis to visit her sister. She wants to go in November. If she’s even alive then there’s no way Hospice should let her make the trip, alone or otherwise. And this is her 80-y/o sister who’s caring for a spouse with Parkinson’s. What could possibly go wrong?
I’m inclined to get her nurse to tell her she absolutely can’t travel. Is that unethical? Or ask her sister to tell her she can’t manage it. Not that I expect she’ll be alive in November, but who knows?
Did I ever mention how stubborn she is?
Another topic - my washer smells kinda funky. Would running a load with vinegar help? Or bleach? Or vodka?
Maybe I need the vodka…
ETA: i mentioned your b-day greetings to my daughter. She said “Any cash?” That’s my girl!
Howdy Y’all! Things got did and we were bears who brunch. Then ‘twas back to da cave for nappage and day drinkin’. I had some popcorn whilst watchin’ an episode of Call The Midwife (it really is a sappy show, but I’m likin’ it), and that made me happy. Been cloudy all day, but no rain. We’re promised overnight and all day tomorrow. We shall see.
MOOOOOOM I, for one am, glad you never became a glamorous Broadway actor. You would have deigned yourself too good for the likes of the MMP and we never would have met. A near tragedy avoided because you stunk at a high skool audition! Happy Bday to FairyChatSpawn! Frozen grilled cheese sammiches are the work of Satan! Distilled vinegar would help the washin’ machine. Usin’ the vodka to make a Bloody Mary would help you.
Taters Hope your son is better soonest and avoids pneumonia. All I can say about your granddaugter is hopefully she will calm down in time. You are right that all you can do is watch and hope for the best.
GodBod great to hear from ya! Conga rats on makin’ the dean’s list. A part-time job is not the worst thing whilst in kolledge. I worked part-time when skool was in session and full-time when it wasn’t. I liked havin’ the money comin’ in, and also knew it was not a job I would have to do for the rest of my life.
doggio Labor Day weekend is all about how much grilled and/or smoked meat one can stuff in one’s mouth. Sallit ain’t welcome.
