Finally negative! Good thing as koritza needs a bag of food. I have a lot of stuff that needs to be taken out of the flat.
Whoot!
Stainless steel rat, the gatoring on the wall happened when the plaster got a bit wet when the upstairs neighbour had a leaky pipe. Luckily I was home when it happened. When the plaster dried a small bit blistered and it looks like gator skin. Just like a blister once you start peeling…it gats bigger.
Afternoon, mumpers! It’s currently 27c/81f with no predicted change, and mostly sunny. Weather app is not happy and says “Roses are red, voilets are blue. It’s warm as fuck, and you can fucking suck it.” It is indeed rather hot out there, or in here since I’m at home irking and the room is hot. My window is open but the big back windows aren’t becuase we have building (or rather demolition) going on next door with the idiot neighbour up to something…and of course it’s noisy, his deaf grandad is out there yelling at people who are 2 feet away from him…and I have a Board of Examiners meeting.
Morning all. Celebrated labor Day by sleeping in until nearly 9am, so this will be a quick one while I prepare for shopping and sammich. Used to work for the US Gubmint, so got all the Federal holidays off, no that I’m retired everyday is a potential holiday.
Will cover all the yeas, boos, and hugs when I get back.
This is what I needed to cut up:
This is where it would go:
This is how I did it:
This is the current wood pile:
There’s another pile with about half this much wood under the deck. So we’re ready for a cold winter.
I get paid for breathing, so no holiday off for me.
In the Navy, as FCM said, we got every federal holiday off unless it was a duty day. If I did have the day off, I would often offer to swap duty days with less fortunate people for a small fee (usually $20). At Sears we only had five paid holidays, but as a full-time employee if I had the day off I got seven hours’ pay anyway – and if I worked, I got time-and-a-half plus the seven hours (thus double-and-a-half for up to seven hours, and then time-and-a-half for anything over seven).
Nothing special planned for the day – just normal routine. I should go for a walk, though, and the garden needs some attention.
Last Sunday my bathroom scale said 206 pounds, wearing just my Y-fronts. Had an appointment Tuesday afternoon (nothing important – just a physical and a chance to meet the new APRN); their scale said 210 pounds, fully dressed except for shoes. So that’s a good 35 pounds I’ve lost since mid-April.
Morning, everyone! My employer pays us for 8 of the 11 federal holidays, and today is one of 'em. We don’t get Columbus Day, so the next company holiday will be Veterans Day (we also get Thanksgiving Day that month; I love November!). I’m only working Tues/Wed/Thu this week, though, because on Friday I’ll drive to NJ for a family wedding. I drive back a week from today, so next week will also be a short one.
Yesterday was long and tiring but good! It started with staffing my volunteer organization’s table at the Northern Virginia AFL-CIO’s Labor Day picnic. The location was a 35-minute drive from home, and I got there at a little after 11am: the event was from 12-3pm, but everyone started packing up at around 2:40 because it was so freaking hot! Even under tents! Bright sun all day, and I think the high temp hit 96°F. I had a small battery-powered fan with me and also brought my own drinks, but there was really no escaping the heat. It was a well-attended event, though, and I’m glad I could help my organization be there. I got home at around 3:30 and took a shower, then had less than 90 minutes to chill with the dog before heading to a friend’s 60th birthday party. He and his wife rented out a local VFW hall, and provided free drinks, live music, and dinner for ~100 people. It was a really nice evening, and broke up at around 9pm.
On the way home, I saw my very first meteor – and it was a fireball! It was big and bright, and very surreal. I almost didn’t believe my eyes! When I got home and looked at FB, there was a post from the Washington Post’s Capital Weather Gang about it. Here’s an article from last night (which I’ve gifted, so it shouldn’t be behind a paywall for anyone).
I was pretty tired by the time I got home – on top of the long day I think being in the heat for almost four hours took more out of me than I’d expected – but I stayed up for a couple more hours watching TV and unwinding. I slept pretty well and didn’t get up until around 8am, but I’m feeling a bit “off” today – like, an early afternoon nap might not be out of the question. I’m very grateful for the holiday and that I have no plans, and also that I have no need to go outside (except for trips to the back yard with Bailey): I think today is supposed to be even hotter than yesterday!
Oh yay! Congrats!!
Wow, two equally important anniversaries in the same month! (week?)
I’ll hit 20 years here in July. woah
Sounds like she chose wisely/got lucky! Excellent!
When I first saw their signs upon moving to the Midwest, my initial reaction was, “Why the well would I bank with someone who’s even worse at math than I am?”
Man, that was a good show. I always thought that if they were still running it when The World Ended ™ that they’d no doubt do a running gag with Dale properly masked up … but with a hole cut in it for his cigarette.
And Boomhauer fast-mumbling through a mask would be hilarious. It’d be like Kenny from “South Park.”
Can you keep down yogurt? Very good for your system during this time.
An enormous “thank you!” to not one, but two of y’all: one warm-hearted stranger sent me a beautiful gift, and another Mumper acted as go-between & poked me to go check my mailbox.
I received the cutest scissors, with handles shaped like a cat’s face (and a black cat painted on!) and they’re tiny and pointy and very sharp, just perfect for playing with thread.
This is a shitty time for me - I had to text my manager before work last week to give her a heads up, because I couldn’t even practice what I was gonna say to the cat without crying - so to get such a lovely surprise was a true blessing, and I do not use that phrase lightly.
It’s hot, and I’m physically hungry but of course donwanna eat. I could go for a smoothie - I don’t think I’ve had one in years, I usually go for a icy slushie type of drink, or iced coffee - but with the holiday & my proximity to the lakefront, every place is likely either closed, or packed with a line out the door.
I don’t feel like sitting around in a drive-thru line forever, so I’ll just … sit around at home, with no smoothie.
Minus side: temps don’t get paid for holidays off.
Got some minor errands today, including feeding the car for the coming week. Otherwise, not much going on over here, except for a certain orange smartass now being able to open cabinet doors that we installed magnetic latches on, dammit.
And I’m back with a full belly courtesy of Jersey Mike’s and some salad and bananas from Kroger, so can now try and keep up with last night’s and today’s messaging. The gym closes at 4pm today so I’ll have to make sure I get over there to get my swimming and sauna in. Told the boys no practice today but that I’d be up there to kick it around some if they want to come out. Either way I should get my exercise in for the day.
From last week’s postings:
JtC, there is the old saying “Friends help you move; great friends help you move the bodies”. Not sure where your ‘moving’ falls on that scale, but good on ya for lessening your friend’s stress…sounds like she had enough right now.
Flyboy, wonderful video of the otters; they’re big ones, too, the cats better stay in the house and just look at them.
Wheelie, yep, storms out there can get nasty real fast and flooding roads is an issue. Glad you were able to make it home.
OK, on to Moanday (nearly 30 comments already!)
nellie, sounds like you had both a sad and joyous day; and yes, those two emotions can go together as you well know. Awful glad the kids turned out so well, you’re all not only survivors, but achievers.
FCM, I’m already tired just looking at the pictures of the woodpile you made. Slothage is now required.
yanker, I have no sympathy for Nazi’s; but they are ‘family’, so I can understand being torn. Hope you get feeling better for the trip.
Beautifully put. Hope the Doc can help you.
When I worked in Abu Dhabi, I was assigned to a building that was part of the UAE General Headquarters, so we had the UAE holidays instead. Not as many, but Eid Al Fitr and Eid Al Adha were often several days in a row, and if a member of the Royal family died, we got a week off.
{Taters}, take care of yourself. Chores are less important than your health.
Flyboy, right place at the right time for wifey. Hope it works fine.
{wet one}, feel better soon.
rocky, good to hear the negative test. And thanks for the explanation.
Boo fae, that’s pretty hot for your neck of the woods. Take care.
Herald, good news on the weight; I was at 247.2 last week, about 40 lbs lighter than I was 18 months ago. We’ll keep on fighting our own Battle of the Bulge (42" waistline or bust!!)
Oopsie, sounds like you had a real good day; productive, entertaining and sweaty…and yeah, being out in the heat, even if you’re not really active, will take it out of you.
{{{Shoe}}}, was not part of the gift-giving cabal, but happy for you.
Seanette, you obviously have the Houdini of cats (but then, all cats have a bit of magic in them).
WHEW! Keeping up with you folks is a full-time job (but I love it). All y’all take care and I need to find my swimmin’ trunks and get ready for the backstroking (going for 1,000 yards today). Have a good week all.
“If I were asked to answer the following question: What is slavery? and I should answer in one word, It is murder! my meaning would be understood at once. Why, then, to this other question: What is property? may I not likewise answer, It is theft! without the certainty of being misunderstood?”
Happy new week to everyone! 'Tis a bit after 1pm here as I complete this post.
First some responses:
{{Nellie}} Good to have Daughter in, and good that Son & Daughter are on the same page ref toxic Dad.
If I could by magic wand install one piece of instinctual wisdom in every human head it would be that there is never a good enough reason to live with or work for a jerk or crazy person. The world would be a much happier place if somehow that fact was obvious to all. But somehow it’s not; instead it’s a nearly universal blind spot. You’re one of millions who’ve endured the same harsh lesson. You can take pride that you actually learned it; so very many never do.
Hmm. My time in USAF was pretty much holidays (and weekends) do not exist, except on a paper calendar. There are 365 workdays in a year. You don’t have to work all of them, but none are more special than any other.
In the airline world of course, there are 365 workdays too. Again you don’t work all of them, but none are special, except in that some bring out bigger crowds of amateur travelers than others. Only very recently have we started getting extra pay for working the really big holidays. Feb 25th or Dec 25th? Both are just another day for most of my career.
Today, Labor Day happens to be an off day for me. One whereon overtime seems unlikely, but hope springs eternal (IOW, for another few days until I retire).
Yanker: Hope the illness resolves promptly. Otherwise that trip sounds fantastic.
The flip side of “every day of the year is just another workday” is “every day of the week is just another day off”. I’ve always tried to run my job to work the weekends and have my days off be weekdays. I lived in a world with uncrowded stores, uncrowded beaches, and uncrowded restaurants. Between Fri night and Mon morning I’d hide at home or on the road while the Unwashed Horde was out dining & recreating. Much mo betttah that way.
I’m looking forward to, as you’ve said, the idea that every day is vacation day.
By coincidence this morning I read an in-depth report of a very sad murder where the body was disassembled with an electric chainsaw and a wagon was used to transport the parts after they’d been loaded into several suitcases. So your sentence took me to a very different place than you expected before I got to the part about the branches.
Excellent plan!
That is some fine USN / nautical lashing you got goin’ on there. Much better than leg hackin’. (Where’s the :spurting bloody stump: emoticon when I need it?)
More seriously, you have more ambition in one finger than I have in my whole body. And probably always have. I’m in awe of all the stuff you do.
That is wonderful work. And not easy at retirement age. Congrats on both the diligence to do it, and the excellent results you’re getting for the effort.
As to me:
Got to bed not too stupid late and awoke a few minutes before sunrise. Which is getting noticeably later. Grabbed my beach gear and slunk out the door while Her Ladyship slumbered.
After stopping at 7-11 for coffee and a cold water bottle I got to the sand a few minutes after sunrise. We had 2 - 2-1/2 foot surf, a strong on-shore breeze, and it was just barely comfortably warm snoozing in the sand with that much wind. I’d guess the air temp was a hair over 80F/27C when I got there.
After soaking up my ration of vitamin UV there was swimming, some body-surfing, and an almost 2-mile walk on the wet sand. This beach doesn’t draw throngs on the holidays like some others nearby do, but it definitely was going to see a lot of people by its standards today.
As the morning wore on it warmed up and now at 1pm they’re calling it 89F/32C. Webcams of the other nearby beaches show quite the crowd despite the breeze.
After almost 3 hours of beaching, Her Ladyship had not yet bestirred herself, so I went for breakfast. A pleasant little unpretentious Mom n Pop place that was having a very bad day. They’d gotten slammed a bit before I arrived, and to boot one of the waitresses, a veteran, was just useless today. Perhaps she’d had a very hard night last night. 2 eggs & ham took 60 minutes, most of which delay was simply getting the order in. Getting a coffee refill was a 20 minute effort. Paying took 15. You can see the kitchen from the patio where I was sitting and it looked like the cooks were the usual number going full speed.
Oh well, I had nothing better to do on a perfect holiday morning. Slow food is good food. Eventually I went home, got sheveled, and started Doping. Here we are.
Best of luck to all and sundry as the week starts out fun then deteriorates into irk for most of us. Including me for my one last turn in the barrel.
Well, they’re gone. I made pecan waffles and bacon so they’d have a good breakfast before the long drive. Now the kitchen is a mess, but I’m icing the knee before I clean that and wash their sheets and towels.
cookie, are the antibiotics helping the knee? Also, are you allowed to put lotions, etc. on it? My skin is so dry on that knee.
rocker, hooray for negative!
BooFae, today’s weather report is a hoot! I’m going to pass it along.
FCM, that’s a lotta wood! They say chopping wood warms you twice, so I hope you’re lounging with a cold drink.
MetalMouse, thank you! I’m so grateful my kids are there for each other.
pilot, so you’re down to the last few days? I wonder where your next trip will be.
Or whether there will be one. I’ve certainly sat out more irkdays in a row in the past than I have remaining now. I may already have flown my last flight. I’d say the odds are a bit against that being true today, but each day I don’t irk the odds get stronger that I’m already done.
Howdy Y’all! We had a nice time out by the cee-mint pond. We laughed. We ate. We drank. We made merry. Much silliness ensued. We all had had enough by around three o’ clock. JDD and Partner left and we showered. Now we are inside and chillin’. Looks like some folks had a chill Labor Day, some folks irked cause, well, it’s just another manic Moanday, and some folks got productive and accomplished things. I was amongst the most slothful of all the slothful. Except I did make N.O.T. sallit this mornin’, which counts as productive cause I had to make an effort.
