[Old] GoGo On Vacation! -A Holiday MMP

From the previous thread:

No idea. I’m sure there were many companies that made these tables.

I’ve looked at it, and I think it’s something that I can re-create. Ten slats are nailed to two crosspieces. Taller end slats have two slots each in them, and tongues on the crosspieces are glues into them.

As for the legs, I don’t have (or know how to use) a lathe so I can make tapered legs. But Amazon has some. The table currently has legs about 11 or 11½ inches in length. Amazon has 12-inch legs that look simple to attach.

What I don’t know: What kind of wood should I use? Ash? Pine? And: Will the slats warp when I stain them?

Howdy Y’all! Sloth, nappage, day drinkin’, and sup got accomplished today. We are wore slap out from all that activity! I feel we have earned Netflix and chill time.

Regarding assisted living - I remembered what my mom told me about a friend of hers. The woman is a widow with no children, and her husband left her very secure financially, so she moved into an assisted community. It’s the kind that goes from totally independent to full nursing care, according to the resident’s needs. I believe Mom said her friend had to pay $150,000 up front and something like $6K per month. I know she’s currently independent and I don’t know but I suspect that the monthly cost goes up with the level of care required. So, yeah, crazy.

When I was at Food Lion this morning I scored a couple of cube steaks in the used meat pile. I bagged them with marinade, then used my magical sous vide wand to cook them for supper. Sooooooooo tender!! And they were thin enough that it only took an hour and they were still mostly rare. YUM!!!

Dishwasher is sloshing away and I’m headed for my recliner. The house is still open - not sure if I have to close it tonight or not. But the day is winding down.

So I cleaned the fridge, and under the fridge, took out the recycling, and napped. Now I’m bored. I’m thinking about spackling and painting 14 years worth of picture holes as a mid-week project. Since the paint closet is unlocked, I can just “borrow” a can of paint from the complex for a couple of hours(if I’m putting their paint on their walls, it’s not really stealing, is it. )

.

And Spot has his, so the chance of Mumpers being devoured by their cats has gone down at least 5%.

: grabs extra soft fainting couch :
NUT!!!
: TACKLEHUG :

Safer than Texas, anyways. And if it had been earlier, you could have ridden in with Pilot.

MISS OWL!!!
: TACKLEHUG :

He thinks he’s a badass feral boy, but he sounds like a 6 week old kitten. It’s sort of like having R. Lee Ermy as your Marine Corp Drill Instructor, but he sucks on a helium balloon before he yells at you.

Yup, “just two things” turned into quite the munchies run.
Part of it was I grabbed a fresh rotisserie chicken when I first walked in (often when I want one, they’re gone for the day) so spent the entire shopping trip following a trail of yummy scent.
Couldn’t figure out at first why everything suddenly seemed so tasty. I actually had to restrain myself from getting a couple of yummy-looking items, by reminding myself that I still had half a package of the same damn thing at home.

Also, jeebus frick, you gotta take out a mortgage to get the big package of the “good” T.P. (eg my preferred brand) these days! I settled for a small 6-pck roll of - sob! - store brand instead.

Fits on my bathroom shelf better, anyway.

I found two (2) that were pretty close. Turns out, the “For Anyone” cards aimed at the not-your-mom in your life are waaayyy less sappy and schmaltzy.
So … I got BOTH. Imma send them both, maybe posted a day or two apart. Kill 'er with kindness.

Returned home in a decent rain, which bothers me not one bit. Refilled the suet feeder, then argued with Monkey.

Monk: Mrrrow??
Purple: No, handsome, it’s raining. You’re not going out.
Monk: Mmrrmeeeow?? (really does sound like “lemmeeout”)
Purple: No.
Monk: Mrrr’-owww. (really does sound like “Uh-oh!”)
Purple: I said, NO.
Monk: {howling at door ensues}
Purple: Fine. {opens door}
Monk: {runs outside, collides with rain} Mmmmrrrowww.
Purple: Told ya so, buddy.

ETA: smart-me started laundry before leaving, so I just gotta move it to the dryer and I’ll be done!
I actually said to Monks as I was putting away the frozen stuff (and he was mewling incessantly, because, cat) “Hey, buddy, make yourself useful will ya? Go move my laundry into the dryer for me, please?”

Spoiler: he did not.

Unless, of course, there in some place like Nashville where TPTB are trying to wipe out every tent city they even hear a whiff about. There’s no facilities to help the homeless, let alone the elderly homeless. So taking out the only shelter they have is just the compassionate answer that’s needed. :face_with_symbols_over_mouth:

Hubby’s grandmother… well, I’m not sure if she bought in herself or if the family bought in for her after her house sold. Some can be really nice. But they are far too pricey - just like everything.

I didn’t know you were venturing out for me. I need to get or make some Mother’s Day cards myself. It’s been one of those things that I knew was coming up but life has been far too busy. As long as my mom and my MIL get called on the day, the lack of cards shouldn’t be a problem.

Today’s been a bit of a day in the pond. Not good, not bad just… a day. BtY didn’t fight getting ready for school, though he did manage to pull my car trash can out when he pulled out his bag. Thankfully, the child also put it back in. I spent some time, after grabbing myself something to eat from The Scottish Dona, reading the book for Thursday’s book club before going in for storytime.

It was a rainy, yucky, blech morning. Which usually means either being overpacked or only having a handful of kids. Today, we actually got a decent amount. None of my holds were in, so I didn’t bother bringing anything more than my water and my purse. I got to “dance” with one of my favorite little ones and that made me sooooo happy. When I first started volunteering at storytime, she was still in her stroller. Now she walks and runs all over the place. For our “We Are the Dinosaurs” dance, she just put her little hand in mine and… it filled my heart with so much joy. I love my kids, but there are times that I miss having little ones around more regularly.

After a futile attempt at nappage, I went to pick up BtY who, apparently, will be getting some kind of special award at the award’s ceremony on the 23rd. I may need to reschedule my study time so I can be there. I was a bit further back in the car rider lane and it took three loadings for BtY to get in my car. I was far enough up that he could have gotten in on the second go round but “that’s against the rules - you were too far back.” When I remarked about how well he follows rules at school and how badly he does at home, I was told that he could stop following the school rules. With that amount of smartassery, he’s definitely my kid. Also grabbed CtE from the Metro bus and got everyone home.

We’re in the last weeks of school which means getting everyone caught up on school work. CtE has primarily ELA and Personal Finance due. I reminded them that they needed to work on the PF projects that are due tonight. Hubby is helping BtY with his past due work - primarily Social Studies, Math, and some English. All of his work needs to be in by the 12th. We’ll get there.

Got some good news from Dad today. They’re changing up his dialysis because he’ll be starting his at home dialysis soon. This week, he’s going Monday and Wednesday, skipping Friday but then going in on Saturday quite a bit later than usual. Then next week, he will be in every day, spending several hours as he learns how to do his stuff at home. My brother will be up for his job as of Wednesday and will be here through the following Thursday. He’s planning on going up to help Dad with stuff over the weekend, so Hubby, kids and I will be going up Saturday. It might be a bit easier to get some things done while Dad is gone for dialysis. I’m letting the two of them doing most of the talking and just let me know what I need to do.

Tonight, I’ve got my virtual book club in an hour, then I’m thinking of trying to strip the color from my hair and seeing if, tomorrow, I can get Hubby to help me bleach again before trying to color it again. Luckily, I have nowhere beyond dropping kids at school to go over the next few days so I can (hopefully) start looking better before more people will see me.

Now I should get some food in my belly before getting ready to talk about the Manga that we read for this week. Hope everyone has a great evening!

I’m not talking about assisted living. I’m talking Independent living. Utterly different product and cost.

Late MIL’s 1BR apartment in independent living, with 3 hot meals per day, cost $300/mo more than the ordinary middle-class 2BR apartment she had been renting in the same ordinary middle-class town. But they paid for all her utilities & groceries, so net it was a wash financially. This was not government subsidized at all; this was a commercial product being rented on commercial terms to anyone.

Yes, assisted living is 3-4 thousand per month more than Independent. But that’s only appropriate for people who can barely move or think or feed themselves.

Well, I’m back on the train heading home, and got a seat on the shady side. Shame the HVAC is this train car is inop. Kinda warm, although my usual complaint is it’s too cold. So a pleasant change of pace. For sorta sticky values of “pleasant”.

Work was nominal all around. Didn’t even have to make like a duck and paddle like mad below the surface to make apparently serene progress above the surface. It all just worked. Some days this is easy. Or at least low-stress.

My co-worker was brand new. We’d have had a great time on a 3- or 4-day sojourn around the hemisphere. Shame it was just out-and-back. We barely get acquainted and do a little geeking out about planes and it’s over.

Enjoy your vacation doggio!

metal mouse, maybe you could take a semi-local road trip between vacations.

Squee sari! The new puppy is adorable.

:tacklehug: nut and OW :tacklehug:

I’m glad that your co-worker’s pregnancy is looking better. I truly feel for pregnant women in half the country these days.

Irked, came home, walked Nelson, made a wedding card (pics sometime later) for my niece and her new hubby, who were married Friday. It was a courthouse wedding, given that it’s neither’s first rodeo and they aren’t religious. They did go to the same courthouse where Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash were married though.

Stay safe and healthy y’all!

I keep telling Angel she needs to bring her bowl with her when she comes to nag me about her morning/evening glop, but she won’t do it. (It’s always me she nags, not Lady SCAdian.)

I wrote to Alden asking a couple of things about my 15-year-old boots. I also asked them if they could sell me some laces, since the cobbler didn’t have any long enough. They said they’d send me some. I checked the mail, and there was an envelope from Alden. One pair of OEM laces are on my boots, and the spare pair is in my Dopp kit.

Today we had the admin lunch. Soooo good.

Back to dull and boring lunch tomorrow.

Evening all. The soccer fields were open so we played our game and the girls did very well, leading the best team in our division 1-0 until the last 20 seconds, but a 1-1 tie for a group that hasn’t won a game all year feels like a victory. Also gave the girls the color choices for coloring my beard, including a choice of “All Colors”. Think I know which one is going to win…

Have eaten the Big Bowl O’Sallit and having a little bag of popcorn to celebrate the girl’s efforts tonight. Then internettin’ and TV-watching until bedtime.

Flyboy, sounds like a pretty good company to do business with.

Pilot, doubt your fellow pilot was just off the farm, are they new to the company or just not having many flying hours yet? Glad you get along, I imagine being cooped up for 6-8 hours with somebody you don’t care much for is a trial.

Real Fish, we have a “u4” ‘playground soccer’ group about 40 strong, the guy who runs it is a very responsible worker and also coaches U19 teams, but I just love watching him interact with the littles…and do so myself when it is appropriate. And glad Dad is doing better.

shoe, love the conversation with Monkey.

OK, sallit is quietly (for now) digesting and Pepsi Zero supply has been reduced, so all is well with the world in Casa Rat, so take care all.

Had the usual Old Fashioned, cheeseburger(with bacon!), and fries. Also, corn on the cob with Old Bay compound butter. Followed by beer.

Been there, done that, lost the argument.

We are emphatically not an entry level job.

This guy was on his third normal workday after completing his new-hire training process (all 4 months of it). He had over a decade already as an airline pilot, of which 6 years as a Captain, flying smaller jets for the express / regional operators. Plus of course the pre-airline flying jobs he worked to get to the point of being hirable by the express folks.

The company’s internal propaganda newspaper (well, PDF now) has pix of each newly hired class of pilots. The typical pic is a couple of well-connected 20-somethings and ~30 35-40yos sporting the beginnings of paunches and bald spots.

He did not need my help to do an excellent job. I have the talent, experience, and manner to hone a sharp knife to a scalpel’s edge. He was happy to be honed a bit, but could already cut this stuff to ribbons on his own.

Sounds like the type fo pilot I’d want if a pilot cooler fails.

Kinda like the old joke about the pilot and the dog.

It really only takes one of us to do the work to 99.99% error free. But to get to 99.999999% error free, it takes two workers so their 0.0001 & your 0.0001 errors are different & (ideally) uncorrelated errors.

Are you in inner city Detroit? Or pehaps Baltimore? (I know you’re not but gosh is that outrageous).

this reminds me of my first year in San Antonio. One of the guys that started the same day as me went by the handle LeadHead on the CB. He liked to say “this is the LeadHead, trying to stay out of the ditches and getting in all the women’s britches”.

Yay for the good news! How close is she to delivering?

USED meat??? What the heck is USED meat?

Up early; got to Fitness Center about 6:52am and noticed a text from Hubs that he needed assistance. Texted back that I’d be back in about an hour. Worked out on NuStep for 36+ minutes exactly 4 miles. When I got home, Hubs was sawing wood so I quietly went back down the stairs and drove to work. Weirdness with yesterday’s paperwork so had to leave after 2 hrs without completing my work. Went to BFF’s and drove the Sprinter with her riding shotgun on an expediting trip to pick up 2 shipments at a broker and delivered to a Ford plant. It’s definitely spring because it’s orange barrel season so it took almost twice as long as it should have because we had to take detours onto one lane north and it was very slow going. On the way back took a different route and ran into 2 different detours. Blech. After gassing up and returning to BFF’s, drove home, did some PT on Hubs, made a quick sandwich which I ate in the car while driving Hubs to blood draw, then to PT w/ Physical Therapist. After I dropped him off, I went back to work and completed today’s task. Had to take deposits for Fri, Sat, Sun to bank. This made me about 25 minutes late to pick up Hubs. I need to say no to BFF to do expediting when I already have a lot to do. Made cheeseburgers with ground round with sauteed mushrooms and onions.

Go Warriors! (won’t be able to stay up and watch; hoping that Dray is ok - after getting undercut by Bron).

Meat is the “discounted for quick sale” shelf.

I call it the ‘Buy It Before It Rots! bin’.
