Wait! Did that work?
You’ve never seen my handwriting, have you?? The printer is definitely the way to go.
My mom called - they’re keeping her tonight while they monitor her new meds. She swears she didn’t feel bad or anything, but as soon as they got to the ER and said “cardiac” she was pulled right into triage, then sent to the cardiac unit. She sounded like her usual self on the phone - not ailing at all. And one thing I will say for her - she takes her meds as prescribed, unlike MIL… So I guess we’ll see how it goes.
FCD is picking up his bro about now. No telling where things will go from here. If BIL stays on his meds. things can be relatively normal. That’s a big IF…
Meanwhile, I’ve got 2 small meatloaves in the oven and 4 salisbury steaks in onion gravy cooling down so I can put them in containers. Gotta keep MIL fed - did I mention she noticed that when she ate proper meals, her tremors disappeared?? What a concept. Her sister suggested I get her some multi-vitamins, so I should figure out what to get for her.
It’s never easy, is it?
IT WORKED!!! I haz a very happy, in addition to feeling extravagantly dumb.
Thank you both.
I actually walked into the house and said “Look what followed me home, hon!”
Went to try to get the RSV vax today. The wife had made her appointment with a local Walgreens, but the site wouldn’t let her make it for both of us. So we figured that they would accommodate both of us if we showed up. Nope. The place was, quite literally, empty, but they insisted that I had to have an appointment, even though they were all just standing around picking their noses. The wife had a rare moment of customer rage with them (I’m sure they’re talking about the “Karen” who came in the store), and we left without either of us getting vaxed.
Then we thought we’d just stop by our primary care provider and see if we could get it there. Well, sure, they said, but you’ll have to pay for it up front ($400!!!) and then submit it for reimbursement with Medicare. Wait a minute: isn’t that YOUR job? So we bought ice cream and went home to lick our wounds. We’ll try CVS next. God, I hate going to Walgreens for anything.
At least I got in eight minutes on the NuStep.
We’re expecting the new cat litter box this afternoon. Very exciting stuff. Her present box is too small and she kicks litter everywhere. She also tends to poop over the edge, which means a stinky mess to be cleaned up. The new box is very large and has high walls, so perhaps. . . But you know how cats are: new box? YOU use it!
Supposed to be some snow furlies tomorrow as we catch the tail end of the storm that dumped a foot on ND. The city is out with the leaf sweepers, trying to get ahead of the mess that will be winter, flushing out the storm drains, etc.
Will she use a covered box? If so, do you have room for a litter robot? They really do make life much easier as well as containing the smell and mess.
Good luck to both of you on the job front. Do remember to apply for unemployment and maybe food stamps/free medical if you are qualified. Out thisaway, one can apply for all of those programs online so you can see if you are qualified before actually submitting paperwork.
shoe, that just reminded me. I think you should apply for food stamps. I am sure you are not eligible, but one of the things you have to prove to qualify is citizenship, so you will need to show them your naturalization certificate. They will take a copy of it and will keep that copy forever. If the unthinkable happens and you lose your official one, they will be able to print out a copy from their records.
So now I gotta worry about him practicing medicine without a license. I just cannot let that man out of my sight, can I? Geeze.
This morning, I washed the window and hand drew a grid on both panes. I can almost see the highlighter against the robin’s egg blue of the sky and the white paint on the porch, but it is pretty invisible.
If there are no impacts for a couple of weeks AND if I can still see the highlighter (cause eyes and brains can play tricks with this sort of thing at times) I will have to find something to use as a long straight edge and redo that window because the crooked lines will bother me too much. I’ll also do the french doors because they seem to be targets as well.
The avocado half has turned a darker green but isn’t nearly as brown as if I had used lemon juice, so I can point at that and justify “wasting” so much time online.
The target windows here are all shaded as well. I think that probably causes more reflections than windows in the sun, but that is just a guess.
I’ll bet that’s what the CO2 tank is for…
I agree. I can understand how it happens to people, but she is an adult and seems to be managing it OK. Most of the cats are older, special needs kitties, so hopefully she won’t replace them when they are gone.
The garbage company charges by number and size of bins. Hubs and I are on the bottom tier with one standard bin. TC friend pays more for her two larger bins and sometimes asks to borrow room in our bin the day before pick-up.
I read it to VBC in my best Queen Elizabeth voice
I am sure she did. I am sure you comforted her during the end. TC friend isn’t the only end-of-life caregiver I’ve known and all of them say the same thing about that.
I’m glad you are feeling better, hopefully the trend will continue!
I am so sorry this happened but really glad that you came out of it as well as you did.
If your shower walls are smooth, they make grab bars with suction cups that work very well. They are also something a local handiman can permanently install without using special tools.
But that would mean leaving him there for three weeks without any adult supervision.
My snapdragons are sprouting like it’s spring and the pomegranate is blooming again. I’m also seeing nesting behavior in the ravens and some fledgling lesser goldfinches. Everything is upside down lately.
This is very good news. It is good that she is well enough to call, and also good that the hospital is taking this seriously. I hope she is able to go home soon.
That sounds like a very good plan.
I get most of my jabs at the Safeway pharmacy, is something like that a possibility?
Afternoon all. Got the swimming and sauna in early (for me) and decided banking can wait for Moanday, so it looks like a slothful day after all. Put the tray table in the car for tomorrow (the 7-year olds get to paint my beard on Saturday and the table will hold the jars and gloves just fine). 80F outside but lots of clouds (no rain forecast), so not to unpleasant. Big Bowl O’Sallit is on the menu tonight.
FCM, glad your Mom gave you a call…I know you had to be thinking about her. Sounds like it may be much ado about nothing, but at her age nothing can become something.
cookie, some places just decide that the rules are the rules, doesn’t matter if common sense is required, they know they won’t get in trouble if they just stick to the rules…hope CVS can get you your shots (haven’t got the RSV shot yet, but otherwise all set for the winter).
boo fae, enjoy the pet store and the music but hope it doesn’t exacerbate your crud.
Herald, Ouch!! I’ve done that too, fallen and while cleaning one spot I notice I’ve hurt myself in another place; but never while on blood-thinners. Take care now and NO FALLING!
Oopsie, yeah, sometimes when you work out at different times your body lets you know about it. And so far I’ve restricted myself to One 2-oz bag at a time, but I do admit it is HARD…
shoe, glad the timer at least can be set; now will it work (the whole MMP is watching…). And look into that idea JtC mentions in post #185; might be a good idea.
OK need to do a little more internettin’ before Pardon the Interruption comes on the TV, so take care all.
@SCAdian, please check in so the worriers around here know you’re OK. We lost my FIL to a similar accident, so I really am concerned about you.
Well, I had to skip a couple of days worth of posts just to catch up some of the stuff I hoped to get done before my new work schedule starts. I’m out of training and Sunday starts the 11 hour days, so you aren’t going to see me post here much. At least not until the latter half of the week. But I get half-days on Wednesday (afternoons) and no work on Th, F, Sa. Unless I want overtime. I’ll want some overtime, but probably only half days to start. Sitting for 11 hours isn’t going to be good for my back.
Today, I could have worked but elected to take the day to make phone calls to get my house in order, as they say. Naturally, I ended up on hold with my previous county offices finally notifying them of my move and subsequent new job. I got one portion done, and they sent me to the other where I sat on hold for almost two hours before time ran out and I was automatically cut off. The person who handled the first part wanted to know why I hadn’t called before now. I said, I work in customer service now; when am I going to find time to be sitting on hold with county offices? After today, I’ll now have some daytime to do such a thing but I’m hoping I won’t need it.
Put on a sweatshirt and turned on the heat today for the first time in this apartment. It hasn’t actually come on yet due to running the dishwasher and oven, and soaking up heat from neighbors, but I bet it will come on tonight as we experience our first hard freeze of the season.
In the meantime, it’s time to take a pumpkin pie out of the oven and figure out what the rest of dinner will be.
Onward.
This. I actually inherited an Oster “Kitchen Center” from my mother because she had two of them, one for each home. When she downsized to a single home, I got the most used one. Unfortunately, the motor immediately burned out the first time I used it to make spritz cookies. Her response was to admit that she “might have” smelled it starting to overheat the last time she used it. So I’ve done without spritz cookies for many years. They need a powerful mixer. But I’m probably better off. They are pretty much just little butter bombs, loaded with calories.
Cookie, definitely do take up the guitar. You might discover that someone else in the building can help you learn. But be sure you aren’t disturbing the neighbors with it. - sez the woman who’s next door neighbor has an electronic keyboard up against our communal wall but does nothing with it but play the same few chords over and over.
Nellie, I miss my gas stove like crazy. Enjoy it while you can!
On the flip side, I am so sorry for your friend and his wife. That just sucks. I can comfort you with the truth that my father’s experience with hospice at his nursing home was an excellent one. It sounds weird to say someone had a beautiful passing, but his was. We were all there when he passed away, with the final “amen” of the rosary, which he held as important. He had Alzheimer’s and hadn’t spoken in months, but I believe he was aware of our sending.
Re: bidet, I was about to buy one when my job ended and now I am in a rental place. I’ve been wondering if they will let me have one on the toilet here.
Pilot, that looks like a fine vacation start.
sari, I’m so glad to read that your son is going back to work, and that he’ll get a bit of time off before he does. He deserves it for all he has been doing. The two of you have made great progress and may Adam let himself be captured and learn to love the new home.
Although I do use the backup camera for my car, I think it is a mistake to rely on them. They can’t show if anyone or thing in approaching the rear of your car from the side so definitely do a head check. Someone backed into me in the supermarket parking lot because they were relying on the camera and didn’t see me coming up the lane. His backup lights came on as I was almost behind him and his car started moving back at the same time. I never could have stopped before him in time to save my car from damage. Insurance fix and 100% of blame was on him.
Whew! glad you are home again.
Good looking letter, VanGo.
swampie, some productivity and some slothage is a perfect balance.
{{{FCM}}}
Whew, made it to late Thursday posts. I’m catching up!
Howdy Y’all! The things got done and then we were bears who brunch. This was followed by nappage, day drinkin’, and various intartoobz stuff. All in all a very nice day. ‘Twas N.O.S. this afternoon, so we enjoyed martinis under the gazebo at the cee-mint pond. I like that martinis are both a drink and a snack, since a proper martini must include a garnish of olives. Plus we feel so suave and sophisticated while drinkin’ martinis.
MOOOOOOM glad your mom called. Hopefully she’ll come home tomorrow.
VanGo I like the big L. I call ye olde hometowne the big “L” bein’ as the name of the town starts with a capital L. It also includes a capital G.
Up from naptime, having a Boulevardier and watching hockey. Dinner tonight is Rainbow trout, rice, and green beans and 'shrooms(white mushrooms, not “flip out and cut the engines at 30,000 feet” 'shrooms)
That’s why she doesn’t have them at her house.
and don’t be too hard on yourself, sometimes the instructions and reality don’t add up.
[Jeeves]Very good, sir[/Jeeves]
My mom’s last days were spent unconscious in a hospital hospice room with family and friends dropping by, telling stories and singing. I would like to think that she heard and approved.
Sorry that your temp gig didn’t go permanent seanette.
Yikes on the fall herald! I do hope that you don’t have any lasting problems from it.
Went to the doctor this morning. Looks like I’ll be referred to a urologist down the road for some issues in that area, but the A1c was a good 6.4. Sis should be here in about an hour. We’ll fart around tomorrow and she’ll leave for Dad’s Sunday morning. She’ll be back for one day next weekend.
Stay safe and healthy y’all!
I read everything, but keeping it all straight late at night and providing detailed feedback is beyond me. Sounds like lots of folks are having an afflicted week all of a sudden. Life just won’t stay simple, will it?
Things went well here. Today was a planned mostly-transition day. Up early, beach walk, back to the hotel, breakfast then hop on the road to the Arenal Volcano area. ~ 4 hours of typical rural Central America: one lane each way 45-50mph, lots of jungle & small farms & ranches, many scrawny cattle (who taste soooo much better than US fatso corn-fed cattle), lotta horses, and general raggedy po’ folks living the rural rather muddy life. Makes me nostalgic for the years I spent down here for the military working with those people. The good ones at least.
Drove through some giant windmill farms & got closer to big modern windmills than either of us had ever been. Very impressive machines. Had some lovely vistas of giant valleys, a big lake, and distant volcanoes.
We stopped at this hotel La Mansion Arenal for lunch. It’s in an isolated spot along the very pretty Lake Arenal. The elevation is a couple thousand feet, so the temps are quite mild. Here’s a pic I took from our table. They told us the volcano at the center distance is usually fully shrouded in cloud. It looked better a few minutes previously, but by the time I realized I needed to snap the pic now it was almost too late. That volcano is about 20 miles away.
Got to our hotel Hotel Los Lagos about 2pm. The Arenal volcano is right there. Having flown over it for years, it pretty continuously spews steam & gas, but no ash or lava. Once in awhile it gets serious though. There’s a big sign at the hotel entrance that says in very flowery Spanish:
Our hotel is on the side of an active volcano. If it blows, you’re f***ed. Not our fault, not our problem if you die.
This is taken from my balcony with no zoom. This is me a bit later in a 100+F mineral spring-fed pool at the hotel. Very refreshing after a long day. We spent about 2 hours sampling the many pools at different temperatures from >hot-tub down to bathtub down to ordinary swimming pool & back up again. Once suitably mineralized and waterlogged we retreated to dry off & sample the local wine & dine which was great.
Tomorrow shall be up early then a long white-water rafting trip. Sat after rafting we’ll have to change hotels; this place is full on Sat night. There are plenty of others nearby and variety is part of the total experience. Then we’ll rent scooters and do some combo of cruising the winding jungle roads and exploring the volcano park. Intend to keep the scooters overnight and on Sun take them to a hiking & waterfall place around the mountain. Heading home Mon midday, so exactly what happens between scooter turn-in Sun afternoon & flight departure on Mon is TBD. Heck, we might extend if we think of something else to do, but that seems unlikely.
Cheers all!
Ohhhh, spritz cookies, yum! Imma gonna start checking thrift stores for a cookie press (another one use kitchen tool to store, FML) so I can make some while remembering pressing cookies with Mom.
I’ll give you a mixer review and send you a dozen cookies in revenge for suggesting them.
So far the mixer has done everything I’ve asked without complaint and has done it very well. Except for the whipped potatoes, they were too light and creamy, no chunks left to demonstrate their homemadeness.
Whipped cream is a cinch and it made butter like a pro. Egg whites whipped up nicely and it hasn’t heated or even gotten louder under a heavy load.
My handheld Oster mixer struggled with everything I’ve done so far, and always left me hand mixing the chocolate crinkle cookies because I really was asking too much out of it.
I sure do know what you guys get for Christmas!
Today I shut off my adblockers and learned that hubs has been looking at stills.
We need to buy a park model manufactured home and put it in the back yard so we can use that for hobby cooking and storage. There are no load bearing walls in those, we can order one without walls but with lots of cabinets and counters for about the same price as one with a more normal layout.

I would like to think that she heard and approved.
She did. I am sure of this. You made her last days happy even if she couldn’t show it.
Give your handsome pup some scritches for me just because.
Tonight our recently replaced disposal didn’t turn on when I flipped the switch. Hubs heard my exclamation of dismay (SHIT) and took over. While I am now perfectly capable of crawling around on the floor and trying to find the reset button, hubs insisted on doing it because he’s the maaan of the house and I shouldn’t worry my pretty head about it.
Whatever.
He’s now drinking his second medicinal gin and tonic with lime while looking at botanicals to add to his mix online.

I am sure you are not eligible, but one of the things you have to prove to qualify is citizenship, so you will need to show them your naturalization certificate. They will take a copy of it and will keep that copy forever. If the unthinkable happens and you lose your official one, they will be able to print out a copy from their records.
Pretty sure I already checked their income requirements, but that’s an interesting suggestion.

snapdragons
Do you also play with the blossoms, amd squeeze the sides to make the mouth “snap” like I do?

Do you also play with the blossoms, amd squeeze the sides to make the mouth “snap” like I do?
Oh that brings back sweet memories of my grandfather showing me how to do that. Thanks for the reminder, sigh.
Up, caffeinated, and sheveled. Off to heave.

spritz cookies,
We made these every Christmas but never used a mixer. In fact, we always mixed all cookies by hand. For the most part, I still do. When I make cookies. Which isn’t often.
Lying abed with my tablet for a few more minutes. Then the crazy begins. Gonna be a long day. I’ll check in if I can.
Happy Saturday!
Good Mornin’ Y’all! Up and caffeinatin’. YAWN ‘Tis 56 Amurrkin out and clear with a predicted high of 82 and mostly N.O.S. No bit items on the agenda today, so sloth and general overall uselessness ii is. There’s a trunk or treat and a dinner thing goin’ on over to the church house this evenin’ but neither of us are innerested in that kinda stuff. My dawgs will chowdown on some Flarduh gators this afternoon. Sup shall be burgers 'n fixin’s with fries.
Pilot glad a good time is bein’ had by all.
red appropriate/inappropriate fingers crossed that the issues are minor at worst.
MOOOOOOM sell lots of crocheted critters and stuff today!
Now I need more caffeine and to feed rumbly tummy. Then, onward into the day! Rah.
Happy Sattidy Y’a’ll!
It’s about 8:15 and I just finished setting up. Pics on FB. My feet are wet because my booth is on the grass. Wish I wore different shoes.
The fun should start at 9. At least the weather is glorious!
Morning all. Leaving to referee soccer in about 45 minutes, then have a break until 11am when I let the 7-year olds paint my beard and then coach the U12’s with a technicolor beard. So should be home by 2:30pm. Another great day in N. Ali-bama, 62F heading for 84F and about a 2% chance of rain.
All the other busy people have a good day (especially Pilot on the motorscooters-love those pics).
JtC, hope he at least got the disposal going (in a manly sort of way).
vroom, it’ll still be an adjustment to an 11-hour day, but hopefully it’ll not be too bad. Hope the county offices finally pickup the phone for you. And concur on the backup camera, I’ve been surprised before by people and always try to look around before reversing.
OK, need to dress in the appropriate referee gear and get ready to chase 8 year olds. Have a good Sattiday all.
