Know what you mean, one good thing about working for the US Government all those years was we had MLKing Day in January an President’s Day (Washington’s Birthday) in February off; of course, it was then a long haul to the end of May and Memorial Day.
Shoe, if it’s just a case of the ‘donwannas’, I say think of what you’ll be doing without if you don’t get those 6-8 hours in and head in. If your truly not well, Nettie’s advice holds.
Of course not, you think I’m some sort of flake?
52, interesting the stuff i learn here. Hope the new neighbors are better than the ones nellie has had to deal with.
flyboy, been to Denmark (and other Scandinavian countries) and while I have never worked there and they have their own issues, it does seem to be a nice place to live in.
Well, my only constructive act this entire morning was to make up the Friday grocery list and download the digital coupons, so about noontime I got up from my chair, strode out of the room…and made myself a Cheeseburger. So that should install enough of a guilt trip to get me out and about at least a little bit.
I doubt it’s anything contagious. After I posted, I got rid of a lot of bile, drank - and kept down - some water, had a handful of Cheerios to soak up any residual ickiness, and then absolutely conked back out.
I think the extra bit of sleep helped a lot.
Off to pull on my boots & warmest dirty PJs and stomp out into the snow to find out what my shoveling situation is about to be.
If imma get sweaty and/or snow-covered, I might as well put on clean clothes after, not before.
Monkey has the zoomiest of zoomies. I’ve seen videos of cats running in what amounts to a gigantic hamster wheel, and man, I think he’d enjoy that!
Our Boo asked me to post this update for y’all. Messenger is weird about allowing me to save/share photos, and I wanted to include her message, so it’s a screenshot - not the most sophisticated way to post it - but I wanted to make sure to share:
…All done. At daughter Emily’s in the basement guest suite. Tired, going to get a big nap. Feel fine, nothing hurts. Can’t wear glasses so can’t type much or read. Will watch videos on iPad next to my pillow later. Love, scritches, hugs to all.
I don’t know why, but this reminded me about a place a friend worked at years ago. The company announced they were now giving everyone President’s Day off. A couple of the employees were black and respectfully pushed back, asking if the CEO would reconsider giving the company MLK Day off instead.
The CEO’s response was since Obama was currently president, that President’s Day now also celebrated black people and that was sufficient I’m still flabbergasted anyone could think that was an appropriate response.
At least if it is an Airbnb, it can’t be near as bad as what nellie is dealing with. Sharing a wall or a ceiling has got to be just about worst-case scenario.
shoe Glad you’re feeling better, and thanks for letting us know Boo’s surgery went well!
I woke feeling weak. My body didn’t want to get up but the money was too needed.
I sat at the puter and did 4 hours of learning.
Food safety is important!
One question was What is a manway?
My first thought was, “About 180 lbs.”
Anyhoo, theres a lot more videos.
I go in tomorrow also.
They give you a bag of snacks!
They onlly get wet food to go with their pills, but we do give them several types. They’re not big on chicken, and they prefer pate, but at least one of them will go for whatever we offer them. We also vary the kibble we buy.
Spent two weeks in Trondheim, Norway, whilst in the Navy. Beautiful place, but expensive – US$5 for a beer, 32 years ago. And I don’t drink beer – I was buying Irish coffee, at US$9 per mug.
We had six weeks of swimming every year in high-school PE. (The only thing I liked about PE.) Had no trouble approximating a breast stroke the length of the pool, including submerged, but that was about it. Took swim lessons at the Y twice a week the last couple months before boot camp, which got me to the point I could just pass the required swim test (would have done much better if the rest of the company hadn’t all been swimming at the same time and kept fouling me). Only time I’ve been in the water since then was the day we got training on the new SEIE the Navy was adopting.

I’m looking forward to this evening’s TV time even more than usual: I ordered a new blanket that got delivered today, and it has a foot pocket! My feet are always colder than the rest of me when I’m on the couch (despite wearing thick “Heat Holders” socks): I plan to sit on top of most of the blanket, and stick my feet in the pocket. I can’t wait to try it out.
I don’t have much to report these days. Just workin’, takin’ care of my old doggy (I had to do some cleanup/laundry this morning), and watchin’ TV (while I play NY Times games, etc., on my iPad). When I get back from getting shingles vaccination #2 – and possibly buying some new cosmetics while I’m at CVS – tomorrow evening, I’ll start building the Lego X-Wing. I’m looking forward to that. It has ~700 fewer pieces than Pac-Man; I expect to finish it by Sunday evening. My big activity right now is deciding what I want for dinner.
Tomorrow morning I’ll have to haul the biiiiig trash can to the curb. I skipped last week’s pickup because of the snow: there’s some residual snow/ice in the back yard and on the driveway that I’ll need to drag the can through, but it must be done. My 1 human + 1 canine household doesn’t generate that much garbage, so every now and then I can skip a pickup without an issue, but never two.
!
Oh good! But, did you like it?
Wow! Great photos!
Holy carp…that’s like an election officer day! I’m empathizing!
My company gives us MLK Jr. Day (this coming Monday), but not Presidents Day: so, after Monday there will be nothing until Memorial Day. I’ll be taking 1.5 days off in February to go to a local indoor jazz festival, but Mar/Apr/May are gonna be loooooong months.
About a dozen. So salaried are: the CEO (‘El Jefe’), the President (‘La Jefa’), two account executives, the Collections manager, the Treasurer, the Customer Service manager, and the Executive Assistant. (Not sure why the EA would be salaried.)
Well, they sent two HVAC guys, Carlos, who’d been here before, and Sean, the, uh, expert. They worked and tinkered for about 2 hours, but it felt like much longer. Near as I can figger from what I overheard, this furnace was designed to be downdraft, except in some applications, and this one is configured to be updraft. They were on the phone to the furnace company’s even more knowledgeable experts to make sure this rig was done right.
So, it’s working. It finally came up to the commanded temp. I sure hope they got it right, because next week is going to be much colder.
I suppose that any guest of honor at a funeral would be glad to have plenty of family willing to come a distance. There was a woman at my parent’s church who had one blood relative, a nephew, and he couldn’t get there on time. She died September 10, 2001, and the planes were downed and the nephew couldn’t get there. Dad was a pallbearer, as she had funeral directions, and half of them had to be replaced because of travel difficulties.
Howdy Y’all! RDOS slugs we have been today. I was productive enough to make sup and OYKW was productive enough to do cleanup, so we had that goin’ for us. We do love the RDOS life!
shoe thanks for the BBBoo update. Heal quickly Boo!
Oh my goodness, thank you so much for the wonderful pictures!
Pretty much. I read ahead and then go back and quote as I think is needed.
Does the cold hurt your joints too? I’m using the handicapped spots at the gym because walking from the regular parking to the door makes my hip scream from the cold.
Pretzels are not horrible when it comes to calories. Potato chips are much worse. Do you know that you can buy fake butter sprinkles for popcorn? It is pretty good, low cal and popcorn is almost a diet food as long as you don’t slather it with real butter and parm.
As long as I’m impressing folks about things I did back in the '70s…my folks once took us swimming at the Salten Sea. The water felt different and tasted saltier than the ocean. Mom didn’t like how it made her skin feel so we never went back.
(I didn’t actually floozy with Issac Asimov, I won a place at a breakfast table with him and 6 other people at a SciFi Con. I just like dropping Breakfast with Issac in conversations because most folks assume and I just smile like a cat with canary feathers on my lips.)
I read forward and know that you are doing well. I have to admit that I wasn’t worried. Much. I know you will be so much happier in a few days. I hope the snubbing you get when you go home isn’t too horrible.
I lived that so long, I can still feel the Monday hatred.
The mead Hubs makes for me doesn’t taste like honey, but it is honey based so no bottle in the mail for you!
Harumpf I say. HARUMPF!!!
There is an Aldi in Charleston. That is about as far away from us now as Prescott Valley was in AZ. There is a Kroger in Logan and a Food Lion in town. Do you think it would be worth it to drive to Charleston for groceries? We are liking having everything local and it is odd how our attitude about driving a couple of hours for things has changed. Lazy? You tell me?
It is always sad to see such a manager go. I hope things don’t get worse for you.
That’s got to be so disappointing. You paid good money for something that isn’t doing it’s job. Do you mind sharing the brand? Our heat-pump is working just fine, but you never know when a twenty year old unit is going to give up the ghost. I like to know which brands other people are not happy about.
Can you imagine a world without them? And yet, humans almost wiped them out back in the early 70’s. If you have a few bucks to spare, The Peregrine Fund is a worthy cause.
If you ever get to Boise Idaho, the World Center for Birds of Prey is well worth visiting. Do be aware that there is a lot of walking and not enough benches. It wasn’t wheelchair friendly a couple of years ago, but that could have changed.
Corner! Now!
NOOOOO!!!
Unless you want to start over, I’m sure that there are ways to get your stuff back. Which games were they? Some games are kinda fun to start over.
I keep looking at them but kinda figure that our cats would snub it just because. The prices are going way down. I did some heart clutching when I saw the prices when they first came out, now they are a couple hundred bucks at da jungle.
Tell you what. I’ll buy one for our fuzzbutts and see if they like it. If they do, it stays here. If they don’t, I’ll send it off to you. If you have room that is, they have a fairly large footprint and you live in a hobbit home.
I’ve always read that wet food is better for their health than kibble. Cats evolved to get most of their water from their prey and only drink when they are thirsty. This leaves them in a state of semi-dehydration full time which isn’t great for their kidneys. We also mix a little water in their gooshy fud (Reverse Osmosis water of course, our vets say to never get cats tap water) to add water.
We live to serve our feline overlords!!!
Honestly? No.
I am an expert stitcher. I have won two national awards for my work and know how to read patterns and follow stitch guides. I don’t go to classes to learn how to do Basketweave, I go to listen to the background chatter and see the tools everyone is using.
Powerpoint presentations just don’t work for me at all.
I have the pattern and all of the supplies. I’m struggling because I can no longer see white on white on white. I’m seriously considering switching canvas colors and starting over because the piece itself is cute.
So, yeah. I haven’t found a local chapter of American Needlepoint Guild but have found glassblowing classes. Stained glass is big out here too.
I remember those very long months. Whenever a co-worker got jury duty, we all got jealous.
The Spousal Unit didn’t want dinner tonight, so it was Experiment Time. I wanted to try to recreate the Parmesan Herb Crusted Rockfish (Rockfish, grilled asparagus and Calabrian chile caper butter) that they have down the beach, but I am out of garlic. Instead, I found some vegan kale & garlic pesto in the freezer, mixed it with (salted) butter, and put it on some rockfish. I’m surprised at how not-salty it was when it was cooked. I also had some asiago w/olive oil & rosemary cheese, roquefort, gouda, and brie. And red wine.
(Lunch was a ‘sprat salad’ sandwich, and the little bit of kimchi that was left in the jar.)
We get a choice of any two of MLK Day, Presdents Day, and Juneteenth. I chose Presidents Day because I don’t need another holiday in January, and Juneteenth because I do need an extra holiday then.
Sometimes, getting your minion’s work done allows you to proceed with your own.
Hugs and good vibes to you boo.
Same. I grew up on the lakes and it was just what we did, lessons or no. If I’m swimming for exercise, I usually do the backstroke.
I hope that they get you hooked up soon. This is no kind of weather to have heat issues.
I think that Murphy cut out early for the weekend, since he put in all of that effort the past two days. Thank goodness!
I took Nelson to the dog park after irk, since it was a balmy 50F day out. He got to run with his whippet buddy, Gabby, a sweet poodle pup (she just turned one) named Coco, a chunky bichon named Christopher Wallace (aka Notorious B.I.G.), Gunnar the dachshund, Lola (odd small terrier / GSD mix) and Bandit (mini Aussie) to round things out. They played puppy tag for about an hour before we left. Now, I have a tired pupper in my lap.
