Ah yes, you would be referring I think to “black ice” or summat similar. Never knowingly seen or experienced it. But the proximity of the alert (which I have had there before) is a convict built stone bridge over Buffalo Creek (I kid you not). My entrance off Higginbotham Rd to the bridge is a 270 RH corner via a tight roundabout. Doubt I’ve ever been doing more than 20kph over it. But the alert is good. Would be even better if it was issued before I crossed Buffalo Creek bridge.
There’s a practicality involved with this behaviour.
The MMP isn’t usually first seen until Tuesday here.
Nobody wants some higgnurunt furriner coming late to the party and killing the thread.
The vet checked them, they’re OK.

I was going to start a thread about lying liars who lie, specifically weather-guessers. Nary a drop fell overnight, but now the weather channel site is saying it’ll rain this morning
Yeah, we were supposed to get some too. It even thundered for a while, but, alas, no rain.

The car’s control system beeped on the way to work and informed me it was 4C outside. Buggered if I know what that means to how I’m supposed to drive. Or the car’s performance.
That’s to warn you about icy bridges and overpasses. Mine dings once it goes below 40F.

I apparently missed something that caused some friction, and even after re-reading all the posts, I’m not sure what it was, so I’ll stay mum
That makes two of us.

I have always thought it would be fun to go to Australia on my bday just to experience it in Winter. I’m weird.
See, I’d like to celebrate my January birthday in the summer, so that’s when I would make the trip.
Irked, came home to a goodest boi with a little more energy. Still not eating like usual, although he did put away about a half cup of kibble dipped in peanut butter (the kibble was merely the vehicle for the peanut butter). I’m seeing improvement, but he still isn’t 100%, poor baby.
To answer the OP, I tend to procrastinate anything that requires a phone call.
Stay safe and healthy y’all!

Nobody wants some higgnurunt furriner coming late to the party and killing the thread.
Nobody has ever killed an MMP! They just die a natural death when the new one appears. So pop in whenever you want to and post whatever inanities you wish to share. Goodness knows we do inane so well!
For example, I just finished watering my veggie patch and playing a silly matching game. Nobody cares, but now you know!
Yeah! Me, I ate some taro chips and now I’m deviating from an Instant Pot chicken recipe. Can you feel the excitement? With bowls of said chicken dish, perhaps, my lovely wife and I will watch the second half of The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. Then I’ll take a bath with Epsom salts because I’m doing a home remedy for an ingrown toenail. I am giddy with anticipation. Ain’t nobody gonna kill that.

Sup shall be boxed lasagna (don’t judge!), sallit, and cheesey garlic bread cause 'tis easy.
I think ours will be the same; same reason.
Well, as it turned out, I asked Hubs what his preference was, either boxed lasagna or boxed enchiladas and he went with the enchiladas; still easy, I just grated a little more cheese on them.
I’ve been sitting here staring at posts 13 & 14 for close to 2 hrs.
Well, I did start to scroll to the next post and I only saw the first line but it was so upsetting, very offensive to me that I scrolled back up. This has been me
I’ve always thought respect for others is very important and respect for others’ religions or lack thereof is critical to civility and getting along. To use the name of the God of someone’s religion in a curse, in profanity is extremely offensive and to tell the truth, blasphemous.
I really like this community of the MMP which is at times funny, informative, silly, full of concern for others, etc. Your support has been very important/helpful to me during this difficult year. I don’t know what I’m going to do. I’ve been mulling taking a break. . . or just going back to participating in the Celebrity Death Pool which is how I found the Straight Dope website. I only found the MMP after Old Wench’s husband passed as he was a frequent poster in the Death Pool threads and I enjoyed his posts a lot. When his passing was mentioned in the Death Pool thread, it referenced the MMP and the MAPSIMS board so I checked it out.
Thank you for your many kindnesses and laughs and information. For now, take care and God bless you all.
Speaking of procrastination …
I got sheveled and dressed at the crack of 2pm after a quick snack, visited the bank, the PO box, the carwash, & the groc store. Exciting stuff for an RDOS.
Once the small groc was hurriedly stowed I dribbled down the beach road a few miles to meet my travel pal for happy hour at the beach at Briny’s Irish Pub.
Whereat we shared our last week’s adventures and a plate of wings and the happy hour prime rib. Decently yummy for pub food. And to ward off tropical diseases endemic around here we enjoyed copious volumes of Bombay Sapphire and tonic. With limes. Can’t be too careful where scurvy is involved.
Ex-Roomie Mike met us and more yakkage ensued. Mike then chickened; he’s old. Travel Pal chickened next. He’s a bunch younger than I but had worked today to Haiti & back so his 4am departure from home was long ago. But we did agree to doing a 10-day motorcycle trip through Nepal this fall. Net of the hassle of getting from Miami to Katmandu and back we’ll probably be gone 20 days.
I’ve since reconvened at Jerry’s Cigar Bar for some cheap Argentinian Cab and an excellent Cohiba. Plus excellent people-watching. The sun is getting ready to set and the light, like the air, is lush and wonderful. It never did rain today where I was.
Next stop is home where a bit more laundry awaits. And probably a cheese plate and blackberries as dessert.
In sad news, BB told me she won’t be visiting this weekend. She alternates church duty w a lady friend who was supposed to do the upcoming weekend. But whose husband who’s my age(!) unexpectedly died so she now has other priorities. BB is being roped into rumning the sorta-wake which is traditional in her / their culture and is now this weekend too. I certainly understand and accept her priorities, but am disappointed too. I might attend if they’ll have me. Ouch!!
It’s too hard to quote on my phone but I did read everything to this point and will have suitable comments on all y’all’s pearls of wisdom later.
A special welcome to @penultima_thule who we might christen NextToLast. Although with their position on the globe they’ll unseat boofae as the first to greet each Monday some 14 hours before us US east coasters. So maybe First! is a better name.
Cheers all!

Well, I did start to scroll to the next post and I only saw the first line but it was so upsetting, very offensive to me that I scrolled back up
May I humbly suggest instead to just scroll down and move on?
Each of us occasionally writes something intemperate or ill-considered we later regret. Write enough and it’s bound to happen.
Posts here are both eternal and ephemeral. When you see something unpleasant focus on the latter aspect. Once it’s scrolled off the top of your browser window you’ll never see it again.

I am giddy with anticipation. Ain’t nobody gonna kill that.
Sheesh, take it down a notch, woman! There are geezers here whose hearts can’t take it!!!
Higgs seems to think that if she asks to go out (demands is more like it) then when I let her in, she’ll get a treat. Nope, it don’t work that way. When I let her out around 7-ish, then she gets a doggy biscuit. But if she wants to go out again at 8, no snack. Too bad so sad.
MIL was on the phone with her sister this evening - they were discussing MIL’s dishes. She’s got some Wedgewood china that FIL got for her when he went to England for work many years ago. She’s also got some stoneware that was her everyday stuff more recently. As we were packing them out of FL, I had to toss a lot of the china - many pieces were broken - so there’s no longer a full set. But AuntB has expressed an interest in all the dishes and possibly the flatware.
MIL asked us several times if we want them. No thanks - we have tons of our own and, no offense, I don’t particularly like the style and design of the dishes she had. So if by some miracle AuntB is able to drive here in the fall (very, very slim chance, IMHO) she’ll be going back to Indiana with half a dozen boxes of stuff that’s cluttering my basement. Otherwise, when MIL dies, we’ll have to get rid of it all, and I doubt any thrift store wants it. But I don’t need to deal with that just yet.
Which reminds me - I need to find the number for the abused spouse center and see if they’ll take the two queen beds. They’re in really great shape and I understand why someone would be leery of taking them. But, dang, I hate to just toss them… It’s so wrong.
Evening all. I am typing this from my hotel about a half-mile from the Capitol Building. Call the Yotel Hotel, it’s has a rather ‘modern’ look and feel and the crowd is fairly young, so maybe not the best choice for an old fuddy-duddy who just came from a Bet Western, but it’s only an 8-minute walk to/from the train station, and buses and Metro are nearby, so should have no trouble getting around. Not sure what I’ll do tomorrow, probably will head toward the Smithsonian and freelance from there.
Got in about 6:30pm once the tracks got cleared. Didn’t get dinner on the train, but I did find a Potbelly’s at the station, which did me good. For those who haven’t been there, Potbelly’s is a sub/sammich shop and while Jersey Mike’s is the best of the nationwide chains, if you ever have the opportunity to visit a Potbelly’s, do so, you will not regret it. They also have a Shake Shack and I have never tried one of those places, so that is on the list too.
As for the blowup, first {{{hugs}}} to Sari; I doubt she meant to cause any controversy, but with the…complexities…in her life, I’m not to surprised she boiled over, worrying that this safe and caring zone might turn into another political charnel house. It won’t, and I hope she knows we care about her but sometimes humor and opinions touch sensitive spaces; I know at least some of our posters are much more conservative than I but I never let that bother me and simply don’t discuss it (there are multiple places to do so if one wishes). The MMP is about friendship and caring and I’d hate to see anyone mess with that potent combination. So everyone chill and we’ll get through this.
Now that I’m done speechifying…
BBBoo, probably won’t make a fuss about Amtrak, late trains are part of the framework, and a tree falling over the tracks should qualify as an ‘Act of God’ for them. Plus it all worked out in the end.
red, glad Nelson is doing better.
Cat Glove, small eruptions happen in any group of people; don’t let ti throw you off of a good thing, which the MMP is.
Pilot, Nepal sounds fascinating! I hope it comes off.
FCM, good luck with the beds, someone can make use of them.
And it’s after 9pm, it’s been a rather interesting day and I plan to be very active tomorrow, so take care all and I’ll write when I can on 2sDay. (Oh, my mouse stopped working, may have to replace the battery or something…).
Please don’t leave @Sahirrnee and @Kitten_Mitten. I like you both and enjoy your posts.
TIL lightning bugs don’t like the rain. I was sitting on the porch watching them play in the grass while the mist rose over the woods, and then it started raining and they stopped trying to get laid.
Dinner was good, I am really impressed by how well our twenty-five dollar duel hot plate works. It has small burners and takes longer to heat things up but once it is up to temp it seems to keep it. (I’d know better if I could just reach in the drawer and grab one of our food thermometers. This is funny/frustrating. All of the things I want are easy to find and not that pricey, but we are going to be getting our stuff in a couple of weeks and I don’t want to have to deal with getting rid of duplicate stuff.

Please don’t leave @Sahirrnee and @Kitten_Mitten. I like you both and enjoy your posts.
I’m also one of the few who will (occasionally, when I have the courage to risk the hate) admit on this board to being politically to the right of Bernie Sanders. Please note that I, like probably quite a few others, do not feel entirely safe even stating a political opinion, after seeing all over this board the knee-jerk rages, dehumanizing slurs, etc., toward anyone who dares to not be a devout leftist. Watching people go out of their way to drag politics into discussions that weren’t originally on that topic so the “anyone right of me is subhuman scum” rants can get going reminds me a lot of the more aggressive religious proselyting I’ve seen in nearly 55 years of life (and don’t even get me started on the knee-jerk raging dehumanizing of religious believers by non-believers around here!).
Honestly, when the out-of-the-blue political rants get slammed into my face, I find myself wanting to flee SDMB altogether, since I cannot share the left-wing gospel. Not after my mother, who probably thinks AOC is too conservative, fairly recently pulled a Scientology-style disconnect purge of family members who do not share her beliefs. Apparently, political loyalty cancels out love for a previously favored sibling or one’s only living child, at least in her world. Those eruptions of rage online or the situation in my family have actually pushed me further right, since I cannot look at the prejudice and dehumanizing of dissenters and assume this is coming from people who are anywhere near as rational and caring as they claim to be.
I napped, now I’m watching Game 7, and having an Old Fashioned, mushroom Swiss cheeseburger, and fries.

Another motivator is that I’d probably have to do it anyway, so might as well just cut to the chase.
There is that.

And don’t forget suntan lotion.
Mainly for you daywalkers.

well, no way to wave hello.
Unless they channel their inner rattlesnake.
from being happy to see your husband again to contemplating homicide…I see you have had a long marriage…
Heck, I have women I’m not married to dreaming about me being tortured and killed.

Have they closed the bar yet?
That was my question.

I do not believe we’ve ever had an Australian Mumper.
the late Nicole Phillips was an Aussie. About time we had another.

swampy - wasn’t the late Dottie Gumdrop an Aussie? She was living somewhere in the Middle East but I believe she returned to her native turf before cancer took her.
Yep.
HAPPY DOPERVERSARY COOKIE

Nobody wants some higgnurunt furriner coming late to the party and killing the thread.
Whether you’re the OP, or last poster, you’re always welcome. Unless you forget the coaster for you drinkk, then FCM will put you on The List.
If so, I got a deal on some ocean front property in Iowa for ya!
I thought we dealt with this canard the other day. Lots of beachfront property on Lake Okoboji, in Iowa. Huge fresh water lake, sandy beaches, party central (I was never allowed to go there when I was growing up in Iowa). Lake Okoboji is the Midwest’s Padre Island. Nebraska has a huge freshwater lake Lake McConnaughy, also with sandy beaches. Lots of others of course but both of them are huge.
Oopsie since you are intrigued I’ll give the Dallas Cheerleaders thang on Netflix a go eventually. I saw it and thought, interest not peaked. I could be proven wrong. That has never happened to me in my entire life
Y’all piqued my interest, I just got back from opening up Netflix and putting da Dallas Cheerleaders on My List. Some particularly empty headed night I’ll roll the film and get back to yah.
then head for Chicago on the 27th
Where are you headed after Chicago? Hint, hint: dare I hope the California Zephyr? It passes 1.7miles away from my house. Please, please, please. Cookies, butter pecan ice cream, Diet poopsie. 5 guys fries til they are coming out your ears.

There’s a practicality involved with this behaviour.

Sure we want them, somebody has to mop up, wipe down the bar and empty the spittoons.

Irked, came home to a goodest boi with a little more energy. Still not eating like usual, although he did put away about a half cup of kibble dipped in peanut butter (the kibble was merely the vehicle for the peanut butter).
So glad to hear he is feeling better, even if just a wee bit better. Skritches for him from afar.

So pop in whenever you want to and post whatever inanities you wish to share. Goodness knows we do inane so well!
And she is moooom, so you have to do what she says, we all do. Come on by anytime, we’ll keep a light in for you. Actually I’ll probably still be awake, I’m an unreconstructed night owl. Me and doggio, and, if we are lucky, our dear shoe.
I am venturing forth at last. I’m not adverse to arguments, but I found whatever happened this morning very upsetting. I think we get so used to sharing our daily triumphs and frustrations here that sometimes some of us don’t hesitate to rant about a daily frustration that involves politics, not thinking that some of us find it provoking. Politics seems to wend its way into every aspect of our lives these days, so I can see why it’d be hard to stay off the subject entirely AND why when someone does get into politics, particularly if it doesn’t reflect our views, we’d get irate.
However, I hope we can go back to our heretofore gentle ways. When someone yells, it doesn’t just affect the people that person is yelling at; it affects the rest of us as well, and some of us are less equipped to handle it right now. We’re generally a very accepting, understanding, and forgiving lot, but it still takes time to recover.
I hope tomorrow, we can all take a giant step back toward normal.
I actually met @penultima_thule last summer during his cross country journey. One of 2 dopers I’ve met. That I know of.
I had to look up what a “thule” was. It means, basically, a long way from anywhere. So far gone as his Mump nick? Unless he’s a roof rack.

A 16oz ribeye, a cob of elderly corn, and a decent start through a bottle of good Amarone.
So is ear of corn for an elderly person or is it that the ear of corn is itself elderly? Inquiring minds want to know.
Yah know, in Iowa we say you are supposed to already have the water boiling before you pull the ear off the stalk. You husk it as you hoof it to the kitchen. Old corn is an affront to all that is good, repent!
And, for any who wonder, yes, we did end up buying it. It’s not nearly as extravagant as the Bronco I thought a few year ago I was going to get, but it looks like it will surely meet my needs.
https://www.carmax.com/car/25516187

Speaking of automotive matters, today involves a run to Fremont (about 73 miles from here), where we have a vehicle for DH (2020 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk) on hold for test-drive. Unless there’s a problem on the test drive, it’s nearly certain we’ll buy it today.

dealing with CarMax has been straightforward and pleasant, but we’ll see what in-person is like.
The car that started my saga of totaled Civics was one I bought from Car Max, sixty miles away in Omaha, in the fall of 2017. It was a thoroughly pleasant experience all the way around, even me being an older single woman navigating the process. It was bought outright so didn’t have to negotiate credit or a loan or financing. When that car was totaled a few months later, they refunded almost all of the extended warranty, without a peep. I’ve since recommended Car Max to others because it is transparent and consistently ok, considering that it is buying a used car.
