(Old) I owe, I owe, so off to Mump I go - A Tax Season MMP

And uphill both ways? :d&r:

When I was at Tar-jay this afternoon, there were three staffed lanes open and four self checkout. The self checkout was backed up quite a ways, where the staffed checkout was right in, right out.

I eat a spoonful of peanut butter straight. Something about the stuff will stop hiccups every time for me.

Picked up prescriptions, got some chicken bites from the hot case whilst I was there, came home, made a salad to go with and et. Now for sloth.

So Ace is out of control… I have to keep him shut in my room, becaue all he does is destroy, even if I offer him toys in lieu of eating the couch. Between having to sleep on the couch, and my sinuses acting up, blurf.

Apparently I have a great radio voice, judinging on the postive feedback from doing readings at Mass, and closing announcements at work.

“And the horse you rode in on!”
How were the Malbecs?

{{{{MommaChick and assorted FCDaughters}}}}

I am so sorry. He’s a super cutiepie, but puppies and kittens can be such a problem. I doubt I would have gotten GG if I was still working, the little asshole still needs constant supervision.

Good luck and best wishes to everyone involved.

Nah, slightly downhill from her door to my car and absolutely level from my car to my door. Still had to slog through drifts to my knees even picking my path carefully. At least it’s dry, fluffy snow. So not only picturesque but offers that lovely, muffled, quiet landscape.

Listening to the Miami Dolphins~Kansas City Chiefs game on the radio. Just had the coin toss. -2 degrees at kickoff, -21 windchill at the KC home field. I suspect that will be significantly more bearable to the Kansas City players than the Miami team. Or maybe I mean less unbearable.

Evening all. Soccer has been coached and refereed and food has been ingested, so ready to spend the night internettin’, readin’, and TV-watchin’. About 32F right now but feels colder and the local Weather Wizards are predicting even colder temps for Mon-Wed and next Weekend. Of course cold down here in Ali-bama is below freezing during the day and single digits at night, so not as bad as a lot of you face. Still, makes me thing about moving farther south (how are the housing prices in Medellin, Pilot?

Pilot, great pictures, looks like a lovely trip.

Oopsie, survive the PT and enjoy the Jazz.

FCM, sandblasting anything sounds like an interesting way to pass the time…long as you don’t have to clean up the sand.

flyboy, hope those pipes come around and thaw out for you.

BBBoo, stay warm; those Wind Chills are dangerous.

Happy eating all; had my usual Saturday night repast of Lean Cuisine Fettuchini Alfredo.

You are never dull, dear lady.

Glad nellie and BBBoo got their protein fix.

doggio, do you think Ace needs some training, or just settling in? That much destruction is not all that good.

OK, need to finish the daily internettin’; take care all and stay warm.

We have hot water now! Mrs. L.A. is starting a load of laundry ‘while it’s flowing.’ I wanted to throw some stuff in, but she has to wash her uniforms and there isn’t room.

I know I’ve gone on and on about the frozen pipes, but I’m a SoCal guy (even though I’ve lived up her for 20 years). Such a simple thing as turning on a tap and having water come out is something I’ve always taken as granted. Every time the pipes freeze, it’s an annoyance.

Chiles rellenos were good. I charred them under the broiler instead of using my blow torch, so they were a bit soft. But tasty.

I’m doing everything Foster Dad did, but I think Ace bonded with the other dogs, and is having dangerous separation anxiety.

SIGH!!!

I think you are right about it being dangerous, he’s going to start swallowing enough not-fud to get blocked and then it will be really bad.

Speaking as an ex-cat rescue volunteer…there is no shame in returning a pet for its own good. We took bullied cats back every day.

A friend back in Wyoming called. She got a big laugh out of my complaints about the cold here. Their high for today was -10º, and the wind, as usual, is howling. No snow, though, and they need it.

Thanks much, Boo and MetalMouse. You’re good people (as are all Mumpers)…and very patient. I’ll update when I get news.

Do you think he could have an anxiety disorder, or is it just youthful frenzy? One of my son’s and DIL’s dogs was bonkers like Ace when they first got him. He would bark nonstop at a ceiling fan. The vet diagnosed an anxiety disorder and put him on meds. He’s much better and easier to deal with now. Just a thought. I hope your sinuses clear up.

flyboy, frozen pipes are a gigantic PITA. You’re entitled to kvetch, and I found it interesting and a cautionary tale. Sooo glad you have hot water!

pilot, I love the photos. Medellin looks like a partying town at night. I had to look up that fascinating huge rock, so I learned all about The Rock of Guatapé. So cool!

I told mi esposa that the refried beans we had with dinner were ones she’d gotten from a patient a while back. Turns out, it was the patient who died the other day. :frowning:

I just found out that my church will not have service tomorrow morning. The roads aren’t so awful, but it’s slick kind of slick, and so very cold. We are not large and a rather good proportion of the congregation is aged. I hate to say it but I’m kind of relieved. I would have gone tomorrow but I was dreading the cold.

Sat evening here and trying to catch up on all y’alls 80 (!) posts since yesterday dusk.

My day today was beach while it was sunny and the temps were in the mid 80s, then afternoon dancing indoors with rain outside and temps in the high 60s, then dinner out but indoors with temps in low 60s on the way down into the high 50s overnight. At least it’s overcast as befits the temps. Quite a dynamic weather day. But nothing compared to what most of you are dealing with.

Nellie: so sorry for Sis. Best of luck making a bad situation a little less bad.

My father was also an airline pilot. At age 50 he lost one eye to retinal cancer. After a suitable recovery period he flew jets another 8 years with only one eye until the then-normal retirement age of 60. Losing sight in one eye is no laughing matter, as Dad or @pullin can readily attest. But it is a lot less crippling than losing one foot or hand. Really.

This may help your sister or you to get some perspective. Scary as all get out, but as long as you have one good eye you’ve got more than enough to lead a nearly unaffected life.

boofae: You said a bit ago that you were finally going off to the jeweler to replace the wrong gift watch with the correct one. But I never saw the results of that effort. Did I miss your post? Did you have success? Did 'im indoors have any idea why he did what he did instead or how not-right it was?

Per wiki there are "Lakewood"s as named towns or cities in 19 states = 38%. So you’re close  . But I bet you’re right and are maybe even underestimating that percentage when you get to the names of housing developments or informal sections of towns; “Lakewood” is sure one of the biggies. 'Murricans: short on imagination since 1776.

doggio the Malbecs were good. Not awesome, but a bargain price. I wish you a good solution to Ace; I’m simply at a loss.

metalmouse: I don’t know about Medellin real estate prices directly. Here’s some data points though.

  • They’re seemingly kinda pricy in the upscale urban parts, on par with US urban prices.
  • OTOH, they’re definitely real cheap in the working class neighborhoods, since those folks only earn a couple dozen USD-equivalent per day if that.
  • While I was riding down there from MIA my chatty seatmate was a retired US government bureaucrat / clerical worker. No idea of her GS grade, but she sounded a lot more like a worker bee than an executive.

Anyhow, she lives in a new-ish highrise in a burb (Sabaneta) on the southern outskirts of the city. She told me she loves it and her cost of living is real low all around. She’s black, not Latina, born and lived her whole life in the DC area. As gringo as they come, but a perky adventurous spirit despite being about age 70. She said she moved down there speaking zero Spanish and in a couple years has learned by osmosis the small vocabulary you need to get along in daily life. She’s a happy camper for sure.

One last comment. Medellín’s nickname is “the city of perpetual Spring”. Which is about what it felt like.

Flyboy Hooray for hot water!! Double hooray for no burst-pipe leak. And darn fine chiles rellenos!

I did read the other ~75 posts I didn’t reply too. Best to everyone!!

That’s a wonderful story about your dad! I’ll be sure to pass that along. When I lost the sight in my right eye ((temporarily, but I didn’t know that), I actually found it to be more difficult than I’d supposed. At the airport, I kept literally running into people walking on my right, for instance. There’s definitely a learning curve. Sounds like your dad aced it. I’m impressed1

My concerns about my SIL are twofold. First, she has severe anxiety and does not handle health issues well. She jumps to the worst-case scenario, stays there, and builds a house. She’s not the plucky sort who makes the best out of a bad situation. My other concern is that the docs expect that the diabetes that caused this mess in the first place will probably affect her other eye. They plan to keep a careful eye on it, laser any bad blood vessels, and hope for the best. She’s ill-equipped to be blind, though, emotionally speaking, and without going into details, I have reason to worry about what she might do. And she adamantly refuses therapy.

But I’ll cross that bridge when we come to it.

Thanks much!

Holy shit is it cold!

Allow me to elucidate. I just took my dog out for the quickest of bathroom walkies in the history of dogs - at least my dog. It is 13 degrees Fahrenheit outside right now with a wind chill of negative 30! Normally Bob likes to turn his walks into a little sniff tour of the open square next to my building but we didn’t even leave the courtyard. The quickest of pees and the quickest of poops, in a nicely private corner or the courtyard and then we ran back inside. I think we were out there for maybe a minute and a half - two minutes, tops. I had my winter coat on but just jeans and I was frah-heezing! These idiots in Kansas City playing football with bare arms must be brain damaged.

That’s what I’ve been saying!

So it’s a little like Stranger in a Strange Land, then, where they eat Valentine Michael Smith?

And you haven’t been wrong.

So today was mostly slothful with the exception of doing cheese and cave research. Next year I am going to start playing with stinky cheeses.

GG took another bath today AND he got a mani-pedi because I’m not sure which claw snagged hubs arm on the way out. I might not be able to make hubs close the bathroom door until after the jerkface has joined him in the tub, but I can try to do something about the blood.

The cat in the bath thing will probably happen again soon, I promise to try to remember to take pics of GG pouting while he drip dries on the living room floor. I will confess to being happy that he hasn’t figured out that he can shake some of the water and loose fur off. My friend’s minipin can shake mud onto her ceiling if she doesn’t get him toweled down before they come inside.

Man, it was comin’ down sideways for hours tonight. We were, predictably, very slow. At one point, we had someone at the drive-thru and then nothing for ten, fifteen minutes … and I pointed out that there was absolutely no trace of the car’s tracks.
Not so much snow accumulation from above as sheer wind blown :snowflake: drifting across the parking lot.

Made it home, but my lil front-wheel drive hatchback is stuck. It’s ON my driveway … barely. Technically, it’s on what would be the sidewalk. Won’t go further forward, won’t back up.

Let Sweet Manager know I was home, and that I miiiiiight need a ride tomorrow. I’ll salt and shovel behind the wheels … but not at two in the friggin’ morning.
This is all Future Shoe’s problem.

For now, it’s time for a lil’ drink, a bit of a smoke, some nibbles, and a whole lotta kitty snuggles. Oh, and to charge up my phone - dunno when the power might will go out.

Good Mornin’ Y’all! Up and caffeinatin’. YAWN ‘Tis 35 Amurrkin out and mostly cloudy with a predicted high of 62 and N.O.S. for the day. The executive decision has been made not to deheathenate this mornin’. No real reason other than the lack of desire to make myself presentable for the public. Thus today shall be one of high sloth, general overall uselessness, nappage, and day drinkin’. Any need to feed today will be via forage.

Y’all with all the really sucky weather stay warm and safe!

Now I need more caffeine and to feed rumbly tummy. Then, onward into the day! Rah.

Happy Sunday Y’all!
