It’s Thursday. This week has been riddled with appointments for the kids before the school year starts. I don’t remember the bajillion appointments when I got my braces off, but then again, my dentist was from a tiny town and taught himself orthodontia from a book. I later learned that people referred to him as “The Butcher.” He was not a nice man, but he was surprisingly good at braces.
Anyway, gossip abounds at work about who will replace my boss. She’s more or less checked out, which sucks because she technically had no boss for us to get direction from, so apparently that person is me. I don’t like it because I don’t know what I’m doing, but I can pretend.
I only have one ringtone. My landline rings sometimes. We usually ignore it, but I’ve had a couple of calls (purportedly to be) from the 425 area code. It might be a business call from one of our members. Nope. People with foreign (Indian?) accents wanting to buy our house. This morning he asked if my name was Johnny L.A. (he used my real name) and wanted verify my address. As soon as he asked if my address was [our address] I said, ‘I’m not interested. Go away,’ and hung up.
There are few people who call my landline: My sister (sometimes), my childhood friend (because he’s a Trumpster, and I won’t give him my mobile number)… and the occasional business that is a legitimate work call.
When I took my car in to a local garage here in MN, I was told that the state doesn’t allow them to put in a plug as a permanent fix and that I would have to order a tire before they could do the repair. Nice money grab.
I need to return a pair of shoes, but when I went to where the map said there was a UPS store a few blocks from me, it wasn’t there. I’ll try a different store a bit further down the road later today.
Had a mild aphasia episode yesterday, which was a surprise (but they always are), and luckily pretty rare. I was trying to talk to my wife but the words weren’t coming out right. It’s a really weird feeling, I can tell you. First time it happened was about ten years ago and I thought perhaps I was having a stroke. A trip to the ER confirmed that it is something sometimes associated with ocular migraines. Coincidentally, I have my bi-annual MRA coming up in about a week or so to make sure the aneurisms aren’t about to kill me.
Here’s a question: why does my wife get inundated with political PMs on her phone, while I get get almost none? Both phones are in my name. I do type “STOP” as a reply to the ones I get. Perhaps that’s the key?
The proper way to repair a flat on a tubeless tire is to dismount the tire, insert the plug, and then put a patch over the plug on the inside of the tire. Only using a plug is just a temporary fix until you can get to a tire shop. I don’t know if WA has a law similar to MN’s, but tire shops do plug tires and put a patch on the inside.
I have my phone set so that any call from a number not in my contact list does not ring at all. I like it. They can leave a voice mail, but if they don’t, it’s like they never called.
That part makes sense. Having a loose sharp object floating around in a pocket without some sort of containment to keep the sharp edge undamaged and not attacking you was the part I was confused by.
I am obsessive about keeping blades and other things that are supposed to be sharp, a sharp as I can make them.
There is a bit of lore about vampires, that they are very OCD about certain things, such as counting objects; and that if a vampire is chasing you, a way to get away is to throw a handful of seeds on the ground in front of the vampire. The vampire will be compelled by his OCD to stop and count the seeds, giving you time to get away.
If I were a vampire, with my extant forms of OCD enhanced to that level, the way to get away from me would be to throw a dull knife on the ground in front of me. I would be compelled to pick up the knife, check it to see if it’s sharp, and if it wasn’t sharp to my satisfaction, to sharpen it; giving you time to get away. And if it didn’t have some sheath or other way to protect the edge, I would then feel compelled to devise such a protection for it.
I’m about equally OCD about making sure that any sharp object is appropriately sheathed, closed, or otherwise protected both to protect its own sharpness, and to protect anything or anyone that might be damaged by unintended contact with it. The thought that anyone would carry a loose razor blade in such a manner, making it that easy to accidentally injure one’s self with it, is horrifying to me.
So once again it took forever in Smalls, there were overloaded belts, and rain. I was there for an extra couple of hours helping with the rewraps. Money, though. And in the last 24 hours I’ve had a silver Atima, a blue dump truck(5 axle), a Chrysler minivan, and a family of Canada geese(30 feet) pull out in front of me.
I am the fucking weirdo in my family, and I’ll leave when the beer rums out.
Yay!
Does the doc suspect an unknown leg?
Ah, I thought maybe you were trying to recapture your suburban hoodlum youth.
Time for me to conk. Hope the ass dragging goes well this weekend.
Beer then liquor
Never been sicker
Liquor then beer
In the clear
Ran to the Corner Sto’ for another bag of Meow Mix (plus a bit of post work liquid comfort for me, speaking of rum) and discovered the source of the racket I kept hearing all morning. TEN power-company trucks, including four impressively-endowed cherry pickers, all lined up like it was a parade, right down the street from me.
I have a cheapie frozen chicken sammich & a chocolate chip muffin to tide me over at work (assuming I remember to bring with!) plus I stashed a coupla taquitos in the walk-in, to throw in the fryer.
OMG, this woman is going on and on about camping. I don’t care! I wish she’d go nap…
FCD took my advice and we’re having the electrical system on the boat gone over by an ABYC certified technician. The only thing is the yard can’t get to us for 4-6 weeks, then it could take another 2-4 weeks to get the work done. But he’s reached the limit of his expertise. So we’ll do other chores in the meantime - like painting and fixing the water system and other stuff.

Over the past two days I’ve started 2-4 posts during lulls at work: each time, I’ve gotten partway through catching up/gathering quotes when something has blown up and ultimately I’ve had to discard my draft. This time I’m actually getting as far as starting to type, so ! But I’ll admit that I’m not fully caught up, having only really paid attention to the ~20 most recent posts.
All is well in Misnomer-land. Bailey’s tummy settled down around lunchtime on Monday. She didn’t eat anything on Tuesday or most of yesterday, but she went back to eating normally last night/today (phew). And my possible COVID exposure – at last Thursday’s gig – only resulted in two negative home tests and zero symptoms (also phew).
Another happy thing to report is that I’m getting a promotion! My actual grade isn’t changing but my “track” is (from nontechnical to technical, which at my company is kind of like a grade increase), and my title is changing from “Project Manager II - Admin” to “Operations Program Manager III.” Both changes will put me in a much better position for finding another PM job within the company whenever that time comes, and are the result of a recent career growth conversation with my (awesome) boss. I knew it was coming, but it all happened this week: on Tuesday afternoon my boss opened the position and I applied, yesterday morning I got and accepted the offer letter*, and this morning I got confirmation of the effective date (08/03). Oh, and it comes with a 2.5% salary increase – which my boss really didn’t have to do.
*He was able to make it a “directed” opening, which waives the requirement that it be competitive/open for a certain amount of time.
Until now I’d only shared the news with Wife BFF, and shortly before the effective date email arrived this morning I got a surprise delivery of congratulatory flowers from her! I’ve never really been a flowers person and didn’t think they could still mean much to me, but I was very touched. And the arrangement is beautiful:
I’m still not done with this proposal yet, and might have to work a little (again) this weekend, but the promotion stuff is definitely helping me be more patient with all of the last-minute BS. It’ll all be over NLT Monday.
My ring tone strategy is that only two people have personalized ring tones – my father and my brother – and everyone else gets my default “Sir Duke” ring tone (but one of these days I’ll assign personalized ring tones to my BFFs). I don’t answer calls from numbers I don’t recognize. At night I put my phone on “do not disturb,” but I have it set so that calls from “favorites” will ring: I’ve favorited only the people whose calls I’d want to answer in the middle of the night (family, BFFs, the dog kennel, etc.). I also have it set so that if the same number tries to call me three times in a row, it will ring the third time – just in case a friend/family member somehow has my number but not their phone and needs to reach me.
Grocery shopping is done and I’m hanging out with a cat until it’s time to leave for a doctor’s appointment. I’ll have to tell her that I’m still having all the problems I was having when last we met, probably because I never actually followed through on the referrals she gave me, so I’ll need new ones. My therapist also suggested I talk to her about treatment options for ADD, but I’m ambivalent about it even though she’s almost convinced me that I have it. I’ve muddled through 60-some years of not finishing tasks and telling myself I just need to try harder; why start now?
FCM, sometimes, living with an elderly relative, I would wish that I too could have hearing aids I never used and could just nod and smile while he told me yet another story he’d been telling me twice a day for a month. Come to think of it, I should have tried listening to an audiobook through earbuds while that was happening.
Doggio, you do all that for money, not just to entertain all of us? Who knew?
I bought a clock with unilluminated numbers specifically so I have to turn on a light if I’m curious about what time I’ve woken up in the night. I get back to sleep better if I can not think about it.
on edit
Congratulations, missred! It sure helps when the higher-ups acknowledge great work in a tangible way!
I haz a very happy for you. Sometimes it’s the strange surprises that you didn’t think would matter that … do.
It’s assimilating at the moment and I have a bag with my muffin & sammich & random assorted snax right next to my purse so I probably won’t forget it.
Monkey got a few minutes of outside time in the sun, and the rats have full water bottles.
(Man, I wish they’d quit knocking them down & half burying them in their bedding!)
Back when I was working, looking at the clock at night almost always kept me up because I was all “I only have three hours left, I’ve got to get back to sleep!” stressed. Now that I don’t use an alarm to get up in the mornings, looking at the clock doesn’t bother me at all.
But, that’s just me, everyone is different.
So we’re heading out for dinner shortly, I just want to show off what a successful cat introduction looks like
They are rolling around on the floor together as well. GG is being very careful, but she’s just little and sometimes he overwhelms her and she hisses. He backs off, she thinks about it and pounces him again.
He’s a really bad actor, though. I swear I’ve seen him fall over before she even touched him, LOL!
ETA Congrats on the promotion! And, yes, beautiful posies!
Well, I’m a guy… And did manage to shower and shave at the gym today without further maimery…
As noted, the gym work is done, have a meeting with the referees for the soccer season from 5:30-7:30, so dinner will either be very early or very late. Garbage can has been emptied and placed back in the garage, so I have been a responsible citizen today.
doggio, I was many things growing up, but never a hoodlum; I was the guy the hoodlums picked on.
shoe, were they just there for show or was something happening with all those trucks on-site?
FCM, y’all ever going to get to, y’know, go boating sometime??
Oopsie, good news for both you and Bailey on the feeling good front. And Yeah!! for the promotion (and the extra $$$). And so nice of Wife BFF to do that.
Legend, took me until this year to finally get my hearing checked and it’s never too late to get that ADD controlled (IMHO of course; YMMV).
JtC, that is an adorable picture. May it be that way forever.
Rain has started and there are things that need doing before meeting time, so off I go. Have a good evening all.
