Mornin all. Tis the crack of 10am as I say Hi!
Whatever debilitating crud I had a week ago is back. Stuffy head, bit of cough, zero energy. Crap. As discomfort from illnesses go, it’s utterly trivial; a hangnail would be worse. But the destructive effect on my energy and morale is remarkable. So today is a bust. Ugh.
I already slept through an appointment earlier in the day. Oh well. As an RDOS with a flexible schedule I ought to be able to get a replacement soon enough.
OTOH, my Fourth was as excellent as today is bleh. The plan was to go over to my old condo for their 4th party / potluck in the afternoon, then retreat here (unfortunately solo) to watch nearby and distant fireworks from the balcony.
That worked perfectly. It was a lovely day outdoors and although warm, there by the water with the breeze it was great. The party was half indoors and half out, so when anyone got too warm (or too cold) they just swapped sides.
Saw about 30 old friends, ate a good variety of what I and others had brought, and generally yakked the afternoon away in convivial surroundings.
This was my first big party there since I’d left HL. She’d lived there with me for about a year before we moved away together and during that time she’d entered fully into the Ladies’ Social Circuit. Which she had kept up with every couple of weeks ever since; a pretty common thing at that building. You’re a lifetime member of the club even after you sell and move. As is typical the Men’s Social Club there is more impromptu and ad hoc, so harder to remain connected with once you’re not there physically since the gatherings are more spur of the moment. So my own involvement with the social swim has been minimal since I moved out almost 2 years ago.
Anyhow, everyone was glad to see me, some people knew we’d split, some hadn’t heard, and some folks knew but were a tad reticent about what exactly to say to me. I put everyone at ease and got lots of support. And lots of “I knew that was too soon and not the right person for you.” Touching.
As well I learned (as I’d fully expected) that HL had been “just the facts” with the other Ladies when I had first left her and then she’d promptly dropped the topic. Very proper and admirable of her. She is a fine human being. Just not my fine human being. As I said to somebody: “We’re two great tastes that don’t taste great together; like anchovies and ice cream.”
I showed a bunch of folks pix of BB and I together. The various couples that I and late wife or HL used to go out to dinner with really wanted for them, BB, and me to get together for a meal next time she’s up here. That’ll be fun.
We heard a few booms in the middle distance starting around 5pm, and the occasional sizzle of a skyrocket. Nothing too wacky / warzone-ish. Lots of gaily decorated boats went by.
When I got home it was still about 20-30 minutes until dark enough for fireworks time. So I set up on the balcony, made some popcorn and thought of swampy, and prepared to watch the shows. As it got dark, random skyrockets started coming up all up and down the waterway or the beach. I can see about 8 miles north and 5 miles south from here although only the big stuff past about 3 miles north due to nearby obstructions hiding the small stuff farther away. Whole lotta money goin’ up in smoke.
First official show out of the gate was the one at the golf resort right in front of my building. My golfing laser rangefinder says the launch pad was 400 yards from my seat, and not quite 150 feet below. So the stuff was bursting above our height, but not that far above. Very pretty. This ran only about 15 minutes, but it was a high intensity 15 minutes. Kinda boomy, but they mostly eschewed the flash-bang extra sharp noisemakers, so not objectionable. We could easily hear the music coming from the huge party going on at the resort. Many, many of the balconies at my building had party groups on them too. I saw more balconatin’ neighbors in that 15 minutes than in my entire not quite 2 months (!) here.
This was also the first year I’ve watched fireworks with very obvious cataract halos around everything. That was a neat effect, with little moving and shape-shifting halos around the fast-moving glowing bits and a big halo around the whole shebang. Which change color along with the color of the fireworks, in addition to their usual blue center and rainbow edge look. Kinda cool if you don’t think too much about what they represent.
As that show was winding up towards the big finale, the next city down, where the old condo is, launched their event: 4th of July Celebration | Deerfield Beach, FL. This is a monster all-day party with typically 50,000 people in attendance. They close off a mile of roads and turn the whole beach / tourist area into a party / street fair venue capped off by a really mongo 35+ minute fireworks display at the end. Both the crowd and the fireworks are a sight to behold. How exactly this particular rather modest and nondescript beachfront town came to be one of the Big Three beachfront Fourth events in all of SoFL is a mystery. But here they are and they have no intention of being surpassed by any other overweening 'burb.
Some of the residents at my old condo have a good view of those fireworks from their unit or its balcony. Where I am now, it’s not quite two miles to the launch point; you can tell it’s a huge show, but the whole “stage” is about as big as a tennis ball held at arm’s length. And you can just barely hear the booms, much delayed. So OK to watch, but not mesmerizing.
Other pro shows were going on a few miles further away up and down the beach, but IMO distant fireworks get boring quickly. The various people firing amateur skyrockets all up and down the waterway were going unabated. Silent but pretty. By the end I was quite fireworked out for another year. Not off-put, just disinterested. Yawn.
I heard a few more illicit booms, bangs, and sizzles semi-nearby until I went to sleep maybe an hour later. If they kept at it after I closed my eyes I sure never heard it.
I guess my locals are a bit less rambunctious than some of y’alls’ reports of war zones and continuous artillery barrages. Keeping some serious distance between they and me pays off. Which is funny since my nearest neighbor is on the other side of drywall I can touch from the chair I’m sitting in right now. So lots of neighbors up close and personal but the rest rather far away.
Bottom line: Like I said earlier; my 4th was capital G Great. Here on the 5th I’m dragging. And no, it wasn’t excessive drinking; I was excellent in my moderation yesterday and had zero the two days before.
Spoke to BB this morning. Her fourth was bad, but not nearly as bad as somebody else’s. She spent the entire overnight in the OR trying to repair keep alive a motorcycle accident victim as teams of surgeons rotated in and out working on this poor schmuck. 12 hours later she was spelled by a new lead OR nurse and they were still hard at it with this guy after she washed up and went home.
He’s likely to survive, but he’s now missing a lot of major parts forever. Be careful out there. I’m glad somebody is in that line of work, but I’m glad it’s not me. Uggh.
On that cheerful note, a happy Firday to all.
Irk or RDOS forth as the case may be! Cheers!!
