Sense? You want sense? Read Dave Barry’s Guide to Guys (definitely referring here to the male kind of “guys”). Guys absolutely love exploding objects. If it weren’t for legal restrictions, they’d be setting off fireworks year round. And if they didn’t have jobs to go to, they’d be setting them off 24 hours a day.
Full disclosure: I’m a “guy” (well, actually a furry pup, but of the “guy” persuasion). But apparently a different kind of guy, one who prefers to avoid rather than create loud kabooms.
Last night was the ‘big show’ here locally. I don’t get it either…
FCM, I still have feet! I actually gave up on the urgent care call after waiting for an hour and deciding it was time for bed.
Doggio, your tales make me glad that Annie hates sleeping in bed with me. If she liked it, I’m sure I’d be getting licked on the head all the time. Yuck.
We had quite a debate in some other thread about whether the male of the species generally stops maturing at age 8 or age 13. Thereafter as they age they slowly get more skilled at faking adulthood for a few minutes at a time. But only while somebody else (usually a woman) is watching.
The matter wasn’t definitively settled, but the concensus was that ages 8-13 did span the range of possibilities. With very few exceptions.
As to the specific matter of kabooms on the 6th of July …
Why all night kabooms on a Saturday? Because that’s the day of the week they have time to spend all day getting drunk and all day Sunday to recover from getting drunk before they need to face work on Monday.
If the USA wasn’t run of, by, and for big business, then when the 4th falls on a weekday the law would provide that every weekday thereafter hrough and including the weekend would also be an everything’s closed day. So when e.g. the 4th falls on a Thu as it did this year, there would 4 days of continuous drunken explosions.
In this way the Land of the Free can demonstrate that when given actual freedom, the only things they can do with it are wildly irresponsible.
Good Mornin’ Y’all! Up and caffeinatin’. YAWN ‘Tis 79 Amurrkin out and partly cloudy with a predicted high of 91 with rain showers by mid afternoon. We shall see. The big item on today’s agenda is deheathenization in which I have Verger duty. This is also first Sunday, but we are delayin’ brunch Sunday until the third Sunday as that is the last day our fill in Priest will be with us. We shall celebrate him and his wife on that day with a big feast etc. He will need to disappear himself from our presence for a while as our new Priest starts a of August first. That was rambly.
After deheathenization we shall hit the drive thru (well, not literally hit it as that would not be nice) at Cook Out for one of red’s stoner special specials. Sloth, nappage, day drinkin’ and other RDOS inactivities shall comprose the rest of the day. Sticky_Buns your health and safety must take priority. I am sure your friend understands that. Hope the doc can get some relief for ya soonest. I like the Mickey Mouse pyrex. Tres chic!
red glad Nelson got to run with his posse. Glad you found a replacement die cutter so quickly.
JtC it will all eventually get done. Hope hubs comes to realize that. Yay for nummy burgers on the fancy pants grill/smoker. We use our grill all year long cause we can here in the deep south.
Mornin’ all! Predawn balconatin’ and caffinatin’ in progress here. Promises to be another warm and semi-sultry day here in Paradise. As the low sky slowly lights up in oranges and purples while Jupiter and Mars shine down from the higher sky it’s presently 85/29 on the way to 91/33. So nice to sit outside with the breeze wafting over one.
Awoke to another stuffy gloppy head, but no other symptoms and normal energy. Oh bother. Perhaps a seasonal allergy; I kinda remember living on loratidine (Claritin) my last couple of months at work. Which is this time last year now. Wow, time flies.
Yesterday was late big breakfast at The Boca Beach House, a couple hours of floating and sunning at the beach, home, a nap, then lazed about on my shiny new chaise in the afternoon shade, finished a dead tree book (first in a couple years), and lastly had late dinner near the beach at Deerfield Beach Location | Flanigan’s Seafood Bar and Grill.
A fine BBQ half chicken, loaded baker, & grilled mixed fresh veg was had amidst a vast Holiday weekend crowd. Quite the party there in Tourist Central. Had a nice stroll in the last of the fading daylight along the boardwalk (decorative-cement-pavers-walk actually, but that’s not what they call it ) amidst many happy couples, groups, and solos. And lots and lots of seething, slowly fading, or sound asleep on shoulders kidlets.
And at the end of all that I had my last burst of good fortune.
I used to live in that city and always had an annual beach parking pass. All parking is metered, but in some lots the annual pass waives the need to pay. So for years my habit has been to prefer those lots if space is available and not think of paying; just lock the car and wander off. Then I moved to the next town over with HL almost 2 years ago, cleverly renewing my pass just before moving. So it only ran out for good less than a year ago. The metering system is pay-by-plate and they have a roving enforcement truck that just cruises along slowly while cameras on the truck read all the plates and looks them up online to see who’s paid and who didn’t or whose payment has expired. If it sees a baddie, the computer spits out a citation, the guy sticks it under your wiper and continues dribbling down the road or stitching through the lot until the next lucky victim hoves into camera range. So far so ordinary here in the Brave New 21st century.
Anyhow, I’d parked in one of the pass-eligible lots, and gone to eat with no thought to paying. Oops. I’m not a scofflaw, just a creature of now-invalid habits. I realize this as I’m out strolling, so I’ve been illegally parked about 2 hours. I know they only have one cruising vehicle and although I don’t know exactly how long it takes him (occasionally her) to make a full scan of every space at the beach, it oughta be close to 2 hours. At most.
Feeling a bit stupid in a “too little, too late; this is futile” sense, I decide to pick up my pace from stroll to purposeful stride for the last ~1/2 mi to my car.
The lot I picked is a small one, about 25 spaces in a U. You enter from the street into the top of one leg, drive down to the end, make the 180 turn to the other leg, drive up, and you’re back on the street. I’m parked sorta near the street on the outbound leg. So in order, maybe space 15 of the 25. As I round the shrubbery to enter the lot on foot I see the enforcement truck at about space 5 in my lot. Which has since largely emptied out, so it won’t take him long to get to me.
I nonchalantly walk up to my car, get in, start up, and back out. As I pull out onto the street I look back and he’s at the space I had been in. As Agent 86 so often said: Missed me by that much. Woot!
Once home around 930pm I went to get my package from the concierge. Amazon will bring their stuff right to your front door, USPS puts everything in your mailbox or in their dedicated package lockers and leaves a locker key in your box, but any other delivery agency just dumps their (considerable) pile with the concierge and leaves it to them to distribute. Which they do by logging them into a tracking system which emails the residents to come get their shit.
She thanked me for the spring rolls from the prior night and said she really enjoyed them and boy were they huge and just what she needed. She was more amazed when I told her that item was sold as an appetizer and I’d already eaten as much as she got; what I bought home was only half an order.
Ref metalmouse’s comments, I didn’t mean to paint the lady as indigent. I imagine her situation is more like Shoes: between work, school, and sleep on a weird schedule there’s often not time to shop, so eating sometimes slips by the wayside. Not for lack of money, but lack of time or ambition. And unlike Shoe, free food at work can’t be counted on.
In her case that day she said she was rushed in the morning to get to class then straight to work, skipped breakfast and forgot to grab anything from her fridge to bring along for later, then had no time driving between to stop for fast food. So starving she was by that 9pm when I encountered her. I asked if she was well-fed today and she said yes, this time she’d remembered to bring plenty to eat.
Enough RDOS daily digest; so many words about so few things, and none of import …
Today, Sunday, promises well, more of the same. Zero specific plans. Might do baseball, either minor or major. Beach someplace is likely, whether near or far.
BB texted tersely that her night has been hell and an hour after shift change she’s still elbow-deep in somebody else’s damaged flesh and blood. Poor dear.
That’s Trevor - all lab with a heavy emphasis on retriever. He’ll wear you ragged throwing sticks and balls for him.
Same here. Firday and Saturday both. We’ll see if it continues on Sunday. Why? Who the heck knows. I’m just glad they were far enough away that they didn’t rattle our windows.
We’re meanies - Higgs is crated for the night. Not only because of the occasional watering of the carpet, but because when she’s in bed with us, despite nominally being FCD’s dog, she has to sleep against me. Nope, not gonna take it.
I managed to get almost 7 uninterrupted hours - YAY! Once I finish morning surfage, shower and dress, it’ll be past 8 and I can run to the convenience center. Then home to await the grands and Trevor, followed by the folks coming to claim the second bed. Huzzah!
Daughter has ordered the loft beds for the kids, and once they’re assembled and in place, they’ll take the twin mattresses. Which will leave me with 2 foundations and 2 frames to deal with. Frames are easy, foundations, less so because they won’t fit in the attic. I’ll probably get movers bags for them and stick them in the back of my studio against the day the loft beds give way to more conventional beds.
So I’ll finally have most of my basement back!! Not that I need all that space, but I’ll be glad to be rid of all 4 beds.
Daughter and SIL will go with FCD today to retrieve the bimini frame that we were going to get back when BIL went off the deep end - that’s why I’ll have the grands and Trevor. Someone from MIL’s church is coming to pick her up and take her to services today. And I guess I should plan to feed lunch to everyone - I still have a few sliders left and some meatloaf and lunch meat, so I guess I’m ready.
I should also check my veggie patch to see if anything’s ready to harvest. I know there are no 'maters because the red stands out. But there could be more cukes hidden among the foliage. And I want to see if any melons are starting to show themselves.
Thus shall my day go. Theoretically. And somewhere in there, I need to run to Food Lion - maybe I can swing by after the trash/recycling run.
I turned off the air conditioning for the first time in, let me see, five days. We’ve been 100 degrees and above for that long, with minimal cooling at night, so the A/C has been running all that time. Our electric bill for this month is going to be humongous.
But this morning its 63 degrees outside, which is almost cool. So I’m opening up the house for a couple of hours this morning in order to circulate some humid outside air. The dry A/C air plays hell with our sinuses and we need relief. Today’s high is forecasted to be a mere 95 degrees, so the A/C will come back on at some point today.
Up, caffeinated, and sheveled. Off today. It rained so much last night that all the windows are opaque with condensation. Which means Spot cannot watch his usual Vermin TV shows.
As to all y’all since yestiddy mornin’. All 40-plus posts …
This is by person, and mostly chrono within person, so there’ll be some jumping around …
FCM: hooray for boat transformer progress and getting rid of beds. And finding the toaster crumbs. I recall some pest control service’s advice sheet that said “Remember: a single crumb is a feast for a bug.”
And hooray for the willingness to be an alpha versus your indoor livestock and crate Higgs so you can sleep in peace. You’re always so practical but still in a caring way. And you get a partial day of grands and Trevor. You’re having a pretty nice weekend for a change. Here’s hoping I don’t jinx it.
JtC: That much chlorine is indicative of somebody who doesn’t know how to run a water treatment plant. Which gives me pause about what else they don’t know about that you can’t smell. You might want to do some civic do-goodery around that plant and their EPA-required water quality reports.
When I left the desert it took about 10 years for my water consumption to slowly subside to something everyone else local thought was merely excessive, not obsessive.
I found that with late aged MIL’s packing back when she was still vigorous enough to do her own packing for a move. She didn’t pack by room or by topic. Instead each box was an apparently random assortment of things from all over the house carefully chosen by size to just fit in the box with the other things already in there. She was a Grandmaster of 3D box Tetris.
The unpacking however, was a PITA for that same reason. Every item in every box was a surprise and involved a trek the whole length of the house to put it wherever it went. And because nothing was themed, it was nearly impossible to impose order on the e.g. cabinets until after everything had been gotten out and put somewhere wrong first. Then it all had to be hauled out again, set on the floor or tables, then put back in some semblance of organization.
But it probably saved scrounging and carrying 1 or 2 whole boxes per room. Sheesh woman!
Perzactly. Every sentence.
And yes, she’s falling over herself promising we get next weekend together for sure, come Hell or high water. She wants her some self-care too, even ifI have to be the one to do the injections.
I’m glad you found the box that’s almost certainly your dishes. It’s funny how much one missing item can just upset the whole flow of the Grand Assembling. And Hooray! for yummy burgers on the Good Grill. Even if served on ahem … paper plates [shudder]. How gauche.
And yes, it’s past time to tell hubs that the other imaginary RDOSs think he’s been killing himself to no good effect. Slow and steady wins every race. Including the unpack-and-settle-in race. Daily naps are a great way to make that happen.
StickyBuns: Congrats on the cheaply improved couch. It’s already broken in and everything! I’m sorry you missed the funeral, but it was almost certainly for the best.
Sounds like your leg problem is a Baker’s cyst - Wikipedia. My only familiarity with these are from several older condo residents who had them and found them remarkably debilitating until properly treated.
Somehow getting medical buy-in about the actual problem was difficult. And, frankly, the more obese the patient, the harder that buy-in seemed to be in coming. Treatment, once finally begun, was itself a long drawn out process. Good luck whether it’s that or something else.
Now if only you could train Annie to refill your drink for you you’d have it made there on that well-broken-in couch…
Oopsie: Congrats on the rehearsal. Your own prep can sometimes be half the fun as you get to play with all you musical toys.
And your Notre Dame is awesome. Thanks for the pix.
Doggio, it’s almost like they’re trying to not run a successful delivery company. I’ve managed to learn the nicknames of many of your colorful cow-orkers, but “Screaming O” is new to me. Care to elaborate?
I was relieved to later learn that Spot had not perished from his brief lack of worship.
If the USA had an official motto it’d be a close race between “'Murrica! F*** Yeah!” and “Hey all! Somebody hold my beer and y’all watch this!”
I have you as my compass and my map, Oh Master. You are a shining lighthouse showing the way across a storm-toss’d sea of avoidable obligations and unnecessary ambitions. May Your Light be forever steady and bright. And mostly unmoving.
Oh yeah, warmish water is still very refreshing compared to hot air. You want cooling, not bracing, or worse yet, positively breath-taking. The latter is self-abuse, not fun.
And good luck with the Vergerin’ here on Sunday. And hooray for the impending send-off of temporary priest.
And then … Sloth forth! With intermittent feedin’
Ribeyes and fresh corn are a perfect summer meal. I’m envious. I hope she enjoys her meal with you as much as you do
Doggi Wan: The Fetch is strong in that one.
Sounds like you’re having a wonderful time together.
Me too. No, we don’t want your aged Mom’s used dentures.
Good luck with electronic follies no matter how many cutters and keyboards you end up with.
The good news is by the middle of tomorrow it’ll be sinking like a rock into the sludge of now-dead threads.
Yaay! My late wife drove Jeeps (Wranglers or Libertys) for about 20 of our 30+ years together. Being part of the Jeeple community is fun. And you get ducks!
And yes, the Darth Jeep tire cover is an excellent choice. As Shoe says, it always elicits a smile. Unlike the faux-aggressive spoiled bitch-face on a Lexus which just annoys me.
And the Jeeps just keep coming!! Yaay! Although I think I recall your announcement back when that was fresh news.
Back to me briefly …
And with that I have caught up on ~23 hours of y’alls’ pearls o’ wisdom.
Now nearly 9am, cloudless, almost windless, and 85/29. The beachfront ocean temp is also 85/29 so just about ideal wading / soaking / shore walking conditions: Cooling getting wet and cooling while airdrying. Lather rinse repeat until sunburnt.
Best wishes for a Sunday full of the things that matter to you.
Cheers to all and sloth forth as able!!
Up, caffeinating, breakfasted, dinner in the crock and fixing to do KP / Sunday chores. I need to go to Mount Juliet to pick my new machine up at 1330, but not a whole lot of things going on otherwise.
Next weekend, I’ll be heading up to Indiana for the family reunion.
Morning all. Have already been out early to acquire the Sunday NY Times and also stop at Wal-Mart for some micro-wave safe cups, so my major contributions to the Nation’s commerce are complete for the day. Have broken fast with a couple of BLT’s. 79F heading to 94F and dry again, may have to bite the bullet and water the lawn, it is looking rather woebegone. Might also get back over to the gym for a bit, did too much yesterday and I’m a bit sore because of that. We’ll see.
Pilot, looking at my comment I see why you thought I was suggesting she was indigent; my bad, I simply felt that between work, school and life in general she probably hasn’t had much time to cook something quite that good in awhile. And hope BB’s patients stop bleeding long enough for her to devote some time (and energy) to you. Loved the parking story.
{{Sticky Buns}}, take care of yourself. Hope the docs figure out what is wrong and get to treating it.
Coppertone, had to look up ‘Leep’ as I had never heard of it, and hope it goes well for you. And agree, the Cleveland Clinic is one of the best.
JtC, yeah, my local Krogers is slow on Sunday morning too. Happy shopping.
red, hope the electronics issues are over for now.
Zak, congrats on the new Jeep; it’ll help when you need it to cross a viaduct…and Nettie, that is a sharp-looking vehicle too. Next year will probably be my car-replacement time, will have to remember to look at those two vehicles.
wolfie, pilot, never been one for big booms, but you make a persuasive case for why humanity is in the mess we’ve been for millennia. I always remember the late comic Robin Williams saying that if Women ran the world there would be no wars, “just serious negotiations every 28 days”…
swampy, nice of the congregation to honor the fill-in priest and hope the new guy works out well with your bunch.
FCM, nice work on the beds.
lucky, mine has been on pretty much 24/7 lately, I set it pretty high (77F) but yeah, when the electric bill shows up in August it might be a bit painful.
And I think I’m caught up. Morning meal has been dealt with and some sloth time is indicated, so take care all and have a good Sunday.
They’re not tall lofts - maybe up 3’. Otherwise, Daughter wouldn’t be able to make them - at least not easily. And we’ll let them pick fabric to make tents under.
Everyone is gone and the kids and Trevor and I are in the basement. Waiting for the call from the folks coming for the other bed. Then lunch.
It’s 66F and sunny outside, and temperatures will continue to climb, eventually reaching 95F. Bleh! Too hot! I believe the heat has impacted the pups’ appetite, too. Getting them to eat has been a bit of a chore, especially Maisie. They’ll eat when they’re hungry, I guess.
I tried keeping up via phone, but didn’t retain much. So, I’m sending you all the appropriate yays, boos and hugs.
My son surprised us and showed up on the 4th of July in the early afternoon. He stayed overnight all day and night Friday and finally headed home in the early afternoon yesterday. We had a great time visiting and hanging out with him. I didn’t have access to my computer because he brought his computer along and plugged it in on my desk so he and my husband could game together.
The fourth was predictably loud, but I was pleasantly surprised that nothing was going on in my cul-de-sac. Still, some fireworks did scare the dogs, but we managed to calm them down.
Well, I need to get out and water grass and flowers. Today will be a twice day watering session.
Wait a minute! You think I’m an old person?? Otherwise, all of this stuff sounds (unfortunately) about right. It did say in the ultrasound report that it was a probably Baker’s Cyst. And, yeah, I can see that it would be harder to find as there is more actual leg there to wade through.
That’s great!
Had a nap. Now I’m up and Annie and I are contemplating doing some more work.
Thank you SO much for that link, I’ve already started down the rabbit hole and can see myself spending many happy hours learning stuff.
I’ve spent enough time looking into the forest to agree that anything could be out there.
It is old here. I’m always shocked at how old WV is. Hundred year old buildings are fairly rare in AZ, buildings less than a hundred years old are not in the majority in WV.
Hurray! Available now and easy to pick up, how often does that happen with hobby stuff?!?
Congrats. We have had Jeeps over the years and many adventures happened. (Pro-tip: if you get in enough water that your doors are leaking, do NOT shut your engine off. Instead, drop down a gear if possible and keep the engine revved. That will blow the water out allowing you to GTF out of the water instead of sucking water into the engine and spending much money getting towed and rebuilding the engine.)
It’s been my experience that if a woman is watching, they gotta do something even less mature to impress her.
It is happening, our house is becoming more and more like a home every day. While we were getting groceries, I made sure to get a couple of tubs of his favorite ice cream. Now when I think its time for him to take a break, I’m going to fill a bowl with ice cream and hand it to him. That should result in him sitting down to eat it.
Does your electric company do the averaging thing if you sign up for it? They look at last year’s consumption, add a percentage to cover their ass and make a few extra pennies of interest money and then bill you 1/12 of that amount monthly.
The advantage is that you always know how much your bill will be PLUS because you have paid extra, you will get one lower bill a year. The disadvantage is that you will be overcharged a small amount every month that the power company gets to invest instead of you having use of it. They will keep the interest when you get your lowered bill.
Hmmmm. When did you stop carrying your own water into restaurants? That was super normal in AZ, I’ve not seen it here.
I talked about the water to our plumber and he said it isn’t usually this bad, but there was a lot of flooding a couple of months ago and they are still trying to flush the system and other stuff that I don’t remember. (I remember that it took over a month for Mayer tap water to be safe after the floods, but that was one small water company, not a county wide one. (Of course WV has so many counties in such a small state that the water companies might be comparable after all.)
He seemed pretty sure that the water would be better again soon. He also mentioned that his company has been getting a lot of calls about the water and has done testing in some homes in our area…and the water is safe to drink even if it does smell bad. He also mentioned that he had installed the same R/O system we have in his own home shortly after the floods so doing ours will be a piece of cake.
I do wish he hadn’t a said that.
We sprung for the nice thick paper plates instead of those flimsy ones that fold in half under a handful of chips and a teaspoon of dip cause we are all classy and shit!
Shopping has been accomplished. We are slowly being able to buy the things we usually eat but couldn’t prepare due to lack of equipment. Our diets are going to improve a bunch when our oven and cook top are installed. The kitchen will have been unpacked and rearranged to my satisfaction and we will have our plates. Life will be very good then!
I’ve long been aware of some cultural connection between Jeeps and rubber duckies. Never did get what it’s supposed to be about.
On acquiring our Cherokee, it did jump out at me very quickly, that there are two icons on the 4×4 control section, that resemble ducks; leading to me if these icons have been common on Jeeps for very long before ours was built, and whether the Jeep Duck thing has anything to do with that.
You have to look more carefully to see that what these icons really depict is an SUV-shaped vehicle, with a dial above it, and an arrow pointing to that dial. Pareidolia causes one to see the dial as the duck’s head, the arrow as its beak, and the SUV as its body.

Mornin’, all!
Yesterday’s rehearsal went well. We decided not to bother with any trio songs, because we don’t really have the time to learn them due to varying unavailability between now and the show (on the 18th). And, the other guest singer and I won’t sing anything together. So the “main” vocalist will do five solos plus one duet with a guest per set, and the other guest and I will do three solos each per set. Everything should work out just fine; I’m looking forward to the gig!
I stopped at the grocery store on the way home, and pulled into my driveway shortly before 7pm. After taking care of the dog, putting the groceries away, and changing, I decided to go straight to some Lego-building while (slowly/carefully) eating my store-bought dinner of chicken salad sliders and potato chips. Side tables are wonderful things! A couple of West Wing episodes later, Notre Dame had a roof and I moved to the couch for the remainder of the evening. I decided to watch the new Disney+ documentary about The Beach Boys: it was good/interesting, but by the time it ended I was ready for bed. I didn’t wake up until almost 8am, so I guess I was tired!
I have now registered-and-then-unregistered for a yoga class three times in a row. For a while I thought this morning’s 11:30 class would be the one I finally went to, but shortly after waking up I decided that it’s too hot and I really just want to stay home. The class I have my eye on is only offered once a week, so I might try again next weekend…but I have tentative plans to hang out with an old friend in MD Saturday night, in which case I likely won’t get home until quite late and won’t want to do anything on Sunday.
This afternoon’s plans mostly involve seeing how close I can get to finishing Notre Dame. There are still 9 bags left, but some of them are small. I spent some time this morning figuring out where it will go when it’s done: turns out it’s just a hair too wide to fit where I’d originally planned to put it, but I rearranged a few other sets and have a good spot for it now. Assembly will resume after lunch.
Display space could be a real issue with any future sets! The only thing on my wish list right now is the Lamborghini Countach 5000 Quattrovalvole. These days I’m not a big Lambo fan, but I had a poster of a Countach in my room when I was a teen so I feel compelled to get this set. Eventually.
In other news, I just got the results of my mammogram: all is well!
Yep! I have the type with metal rings that you magic-trick-fold into a small circle, and the rings get hot. I’m thinking about replacing it with an accordion shade.
Last year I tried an umbrella-style sun shade: the handle always sat against the air vents a little awkwardly, and the mechanism started failing after a few uses.
Husband BFF made the same joke on Thursday.
Completely understandable!
It really does. I have two particularly “bad” windows at this time of year, and putting thermal room-darkening curtains in front of them has made a world of difference.
Congrats!!
Ugh. I hope you will try again…?
Same here. And yesterday I completely forgot to raise the thermostat temp before I left for rehearsal: when I got home I discovered that the house had somehow managed to stay at 72 (usually in the afternoons I’m lucky to get to 74), but I just know the a/c must have been running fairly nonstop. Oh well.
