And the arm chairs
It’s amazing what a little fabric and a little Olde English scratch cover will do!
Bless me, Mumpers, for I have skimmed. It’s been four days since my last post…
We got back, exhausted and ready to collapse, Wednesday night. The cats acted like they hadn’t seen a friendly face - or been fed! - the entire time we were gone. They’re still following me around and jumping on my lap the instant I sit down.
The house stank of cat pee, because Roxy registers her protest to any household disruption by peeing on the mat in front of the litterbox, and I’d told our worried catsitter to just soak it up with litter and scrape that off when it clumped. Because it’s a litter trapping mat, there was a lot of residue. I think I’d underestimated just how much Roxy was peeing there; she’d essentially extended the litterbox. So Thursday was dedicated to a deep clean of the entire corner where the big litterbox lives (it’s more a litter palace). I replaced the old mat entirely, having bought an extra the last time this happened. Pets! They enrich our lives in so many ways.
JtC, I’m as baffled by that outlet as you are. Maybe the guy who DIYed our house went on to work in hotel construction? He seems to have had eccentric ideas about what constitutes “good enough” in fixtures.
Hurray! That’s half the battle. We’ve had to shut off the water to the whole house for any issues with sinks or toilets because the shut-off knobs were either frozen or missing altogether (see DIY reference above). After twenty years in the house, I think we’ve finally gotten all of them replaced.
I feel this in my soul. When Mr. L was comparing Medicare plans, he set up a TV tray in the living room two inches in front of our existing side table, which is nestled between our chairs. Two. Years. Ago. Now it’s where we sort the mail.
I giggled like a twelve-year-old, thank you very much!
shoe, it took me way too long to connect the dots between my sneezing and scratchy throat and the ash tree that’s been raining a soft yellow pollen for the last few weeks. Here’s hoping it settles down soon!
I’m a big fan of snagging a wheelchair and sparing a spouse’s strength for long-distance treks like medical complexes and airports. Since it’s much easier to find an unattended chair than someone to push it, I end up getting a whole lot of exercise. I don’t know about you, but I underestimated how much strength I was going to need for wheelchair pushing in my old age.
I’m grimly wearing my ancient ones with the stretched-out elastic instead of facing that trip myself. Bras and shoes are the things I hate shopping for the very most, and the sizes on the labels don’t always mean the same thing from style to style. Good luck!
Thank you for giving me a mantra for the bra-shopping.
FCM, those chairs look lovely! Now I’m counting up the years it’s been since I last recovered ours…
Happy Saturday to all! I’m off to do some marathon weeding - we have a tough species of weed (some kind of mustard?) that is really hard to pull and takes over if you let it get too tall… which it can apparently do in one week’s time.
I’m fine with Buddy sleeping on the bed with us, not sure I’m all that fond of him using me as a mattress, especially when this includes him pretty much stomping up and down my legs and torso while he’s settling. Then he gets irked if I need to shift position…
Afternoon, mumpers! It’s currently 14c/57f with no predicted change, and cloudy. Weather app says “The weather is fucking boring. let’s talk about the fucking amazing gerbil circus I’m creating!” Well that would certainly be a fun conversation.
It’s actually been a beautiful sunny day for the most part, I got a reasonable amount of sleep last night despite a series of quite weird dreams. Perhaps it’s because I watched Argylle before bed. Anyway, I was up at 8am, tended to the fuzzbutts and had a cup of tea before heading to the gym. They have a new timetable which doesn’t quite suit me yet - I used to do a kettlebells class followed by dumbbell hustle (another weights-based class) but now they’ve put a 45-minute boxing class in between. Boxing doesn’t tempt me so I had a 10-minute rest and then did half an hour on the elliptical trainer before the dumbbell class started. After that, I stopped off on the way home to pick up three 30L bags of cat litter as I’d opened the last one we had at home.
Once I got home and unloaded the car, I had a quick shower and a cup of tea before we headed into town for the usual lunch at the Good Chinese Place, then errands. I usually park in a local supermarket’s car park because you get 3hrs free parking so I did the decent thing and went into the store for a couple of bits before we went back home. Now I’ve unpacked stuff, had a bath, got a cuppa and I’m catching up with the Dope. 'im indoors is making chicken chow mein for dinner then we’re going out to see some bands. Since I have done much of what I need to do this weekend, I anticipate a seriously slothful day tomorrow.
Seanette I am much the same with Cherry. She has only recently started snuggling on the bed with me, and eventually settles down for a proper sleep, then grumbles when I have to move.
Mooooom the chairs look fabulous!
Teela I hope Mr Brown is soon feeling better. Perhaps you should drink the whiskey and prevent the problem coming back?
Dicey streetfood always sounds like a great adventure. Enjoy!
doggio I looked at all the lovely beagles. Now I want all the lovely beagles.
Sticky Buns I would look at visiting the apartment as just a chance to go in, and pick up a keepsake. That way, you can be in and out as quickly as you like.
Taters I know just what you mean. Some days I have a long list of things I ought to do, and I end up doing nothing because it all involves too much effort and too many things I just don’t want to do.
Cookie I’m glad Mrs Cookie has a diagnosis and some medication to go with it, hopefully that will help her start to get over it.
Right…got stuff to do, and I won’t get any of it done if I sit here!
It now looks like the load in will go better than expected. So that’s good. Someone else will be loading the truck, I just need to unload and re-assemble tomorrow.
FCM this talk about dining chairs led me to look at mine. I inherited them from my g-parents some 15-20 years ago. They have woven cane seats. I know that my grandfather got the cane replaced shortly before they passed…(they actually did pass within a month of each other). I sat on one of the chairs the other day and some of the cane didn’t like that. Yeah, I’m a single dude, don’t use the dining room for dining very much, most dinner is on the couch, watching TV. I think I’ll need to get that attended to.
I don’t feel good. I have a sinus infection. I sent my ENT a message via his portal and asked for drugs. I also have an appt with my PCP on Tuesday. It’s sunny and lovely and I need to visit Ariel.
Mrs. L.A. is painting the wall outside of the bathroom, in preparation of hanging the barn door. My friend painted the wall purple, and it’s been a joke with her all this time. Yesterday, she didn’t want any of my advice about cutting the door. I just told her some dimensions, and that was unwanted. She’s remodelled two houses on her own, and one time I messed up some crown moulding; so I can just shut my trap. OK. I hope she measures thrice before sawing.
Thanks! It took between 3-4 hours to do all 6, but I also ran a load of towels, so I had to trot downstairs a couple of times, and I took a quick lunch break. But it’s done. Whew!
We’re taking MIL to Cracker Barrel tonight because she’s got a serious fried okra deficiency. And because I don’t feel like cooking. FCD is at the boat now doing some repairs. I’m going to chill for a bit - I’m beat!
My boss is not replying to my texts about next weeks schedule.
It is actually not raining today so off to the library and grocery store.
Well done! I like the legs. They look as if they could scuttle off.
Welp. I filed my taxes late last year (by which I mean I filed them this year), and determined not to make that mistake again, I went to e-file today. But because of the way the IRS determines identity for e-filing (asking for last year’s AGI), I can’t do so because I didn’t file last year early enough. Which means, since post offices are closed today, I need to go to the post office Monday. On tax day. Good job, me.
Yesterday’s plans went awry when my friend called and asked if I could take Ms. Dog for a walk. We did about 6 miles. Usually she loves other dogs but shies away from people. This time she was cranky with other dogs but trying to beguile hugs from people. A tween boy called after us, “Excuse me!” I turned around. “Can we pet your dog?” Ms. Dog fell in love.
When I brought her home, her person needed to talk about her high-stress job. I got a text saying that the superintendent of the school district during most of my teaching career passed away. He was a very sharp man who developed dementia. It’s such a horrid disease.
Somehow I became the go-to person for finding group gifts. (Pilot would be giving me the “There’s no ‘somehow’ about it” look.) But one of the women in a friend group from my Wyoming days is having a birthday, and we typically order flowers for such occasions. Looooong story short, the Birthday Girl lives in Hawaii now, and there are no reliable florists around her. I’m the only one who’s retired, so it’d make sense I would come up with something. However, I did that last year, and I’m up to my hips in other birthday/anniversary gifts I have to find. Calgon, take me away!
My cousin called today to say her son and his wife are having a baby. The son and my daughter were thick as thieves when we visited my mom in CA. I’m thrilled for them. I must admit, I’m a little sad, too, now that I know I won’t be getting any grandkids, period. But as I’ve said, I didn’t have kids so that I’d get grandkids.
Heaven help me. I thought, “When did Hillary Clinton climb Everest?”
VanGo, I salute you for giving the guy the money you found.
I had to look this up. Very interesting! Then I had to look up “malted barley.” That reminded me of a nursery rhyme, but I wasn’t sure which one. It turned out to be “The House that Jack Built.” (“This is the malt that lay in the house that Jack built.”) Thanks for the learning opportunity!
My brain must not be functioning very well. I thought you meant the girls were the miscreants you were trying to get into humane mouse traps. Man, they play soccer ROUGH down there!
Argh! Phone AGAIN!
Howdy Y’all! I am proud to say that mowage got completed today. Da cave no longer has the worst lookin’ yahd in da ‘hood. A shower, N.O.L., nappage, and day drinkin’ have since occurred.
Nettie and BooFae how dare the two of you have the audacity to move around in bed and disturb the feline overlords!
Afternoon all. Sorry I didn’t get a post in early, but it has been a busy day so far. Got up about 6:30am to discover a had actually caught a mouse! The trap apparently worked perfectly, so I tossed on some clothes and carried it about 150 feet away from the house to a section of forest area and let the critter loose; he took off on the opposite direction from my domicile so hopefully there will not be a repeat visit. Just to be safe I have trap #2 baited and ready if there are any other visitors.
Then soccer started with me leaving the house about 7:15am, then coaching at 8am, team picture (some of the parents bought individual ones too) at 9:10, then refereed a 10U game at 9:30am, refereed my own game at 11:00am, and then refereed a third game at 12:45pm. So finally got home a little after 2pm and haven’t moved much since I sat down at the computer. Was looking at a 4pm game, but some other referee signed up for that, for which I am grateful. I think that will be my major activity for the weekend, rest and relaxation are planned for the rest of it.
At least we had a nice day for it, currently 76F and hardly a cloud to be seen.
FCM, very nice on the re-upholstery job.
doggio, actually it was this contraption which caught the rodent: Harris Reusable Catch & Release Humane Mouse Trap, 1 Trap - Walmart.com
verwirrt, glad you slept better. It’ll all work out for you, I’m sure.
JtC, I’m not swampy but I’ve thought about a air fryer at times, but I just don’t cook enough to make it worth my while. Some day it will be an impulse buy when I see in on the shelf. Hope hubs is coordinating with you on the house visits, it would be bad to have him decide on one that you ultimately hate.
nellie, agree that dementia is probably the fate I fear the most. And something tells me you have a lot of grandkids, just not necessarily blood-related…And it turned out two of the girls were unwell so I only had 8 girls, so they all got to play 3 quarters at least.
MG, a good walk is a good day.
Sticky Buns, some of the other’s have offered good advice, and since I got nothing, go with them.
My work is done.
And where i lived, people slowing down on the freeway to look at an accident was called a “gapers block”. Sounds like an active time, enjoy Luzerne (one of these days I have to visit Switzerland; outside of being in Zurich airport twice to change flights, never been there).
Cookie, best wishes for Wife.
Taters, haven’t been to a fair, county, city or state or ‘other’ in 20 years, might have to go to one just for the heck of it one of these times.
lucky, glad the rollator is helping, and mankind and drinking have been together since the Egyptians discovered beer 5,000 years ago…
IL, glad you’re home and paying homage to your furry masters.
boo fae, sounds like you had an active day; enjoy the bands.
VanGo, nice to have someone else help out on the labor.
wet one, feel better soon.
Coppertone, wouldn’t worry yet, even bosses need some ‘me time’. Enjoy the library.
Whew! Apologies to anyone I missed, that’s quite a list of Mumpers we have developed over the years so I think I am going to try standing up and changing clothing from my referee uniform to something more appropriate for slothage. Take care all.
We nearly had the same problem one year because we had changed from married filing jointly to separate (or was it the other way around?). Either way, it eventually got smoothed out and back on track for the next next year.
Huzzah!
I just failed horribly at taking a nap and now Annie is staring at me every so sweetly as I eat a ham sandwich.
Oh, almost forgot! FCM! Your chairs look great!
Let’s see you hold totally still when you have 13 pounds of cat digging 4 square inches of paws into you.
Tobias got his sister’s strep. They had pizza with us and just left. I’m definitely sleeping with Mel tonight. I’s tahred!!!
I’m in the same boat. I’ve decided that my next batch are going to be the old lady front fastening ones. meanwhile, I’m wearing old ones. Shoot, when I retire, I plan to make bras something that I only wear if I need to leave home for something.

We’re taking MIL to Cracker Barrel tonight because she’s got a serious fried okra deficiency.
Now you done flung a cravin’ on me and I’ve already had supper. Tomorrow’s menu is already planned, so it will be next weekend before I can pick up some from the BBQ joint. Nice job on the chairs!
lucky, my SIL uses a rollator when her RA has her incapacitated. It helps with the basics.
Appendages crossed on finding yourself a beagle doggio. As you well know, they are lively critters.
Got the 'scrip picked up, along with a couple of grocery items that I’d missed at Kroger, 3 quarts of chicken broth and one of broth plus meat made, mailed the happy mail and took Nelson to the dog park (he got to play with Gunter and Tofu again and Lupito from across the fence was there too).
Now to kick back in the studio.
Supper was a garden salad with a couple of chicken tenders cut up on it and an oatmeal raisin cookie.

I don’t know about you, but I underestimated how much strength I was going to need for wheelchair pushing in my old age.
Wow, thanks for this post. It turned the lightbulb on. My shoulders and upper arms have been hurting; and I didn’t understand why. Now I’m thinking it’s possibly from the wheelchair pushing. And no, I never thought I would be pushing a wheelchair.

I’m grimly wearing my ancient ones with the stretched-out elastic instead of facing that trip myself.
I had some like that but 2 things happened.
- I learned about Harp’s Lingerie in Birmingham MI. All I have to do is go into a dressing booth. Their sales associates are excellent in measuring and bringing choices to choose from. So, I get my good bras from there that I wear/wore to work, church, special occasions.
- My sister told me quite a few years ago that she only wears sports bras. So, I started buying them and now wear them most of the time, very comfortable. Last year I bought several from Smartwool and love them.

Thanks! It took between 3-4 hours to do all 6, but I also ran a load of towels, so I had to trot downstairs a couple of times, and I took a quick lunch break.
You are a Jill of All Trades! My role model. Kudos.

I must admit, I’m a little sad, too, now that I know I won’t be getting any grandkids, period.
Same.

Heaven help me. I thought, “When did Hillary Clinton climb Everest?”
for a nanosecond I had that same thought.
metal mouse you more than got your daily quotient of exercise; you deserve some sloth time.
Didn’t get to post yesterday. Started out as a win and pretty much kept going most of the day:
When I got to the office the gate was open and I was able to drive in and park right at the curb.
When I called IT, one of the competent guys answered and he was able to easily add the needed printer.
I had texted the manager on Thursday afternoon and asked him to have one of the guys leave needed documentation on my desk and it was there.
When I gave the infusion to Hubs, the pump only beeped when the infusion was complete. Big YAY!
Made meatloaf for dinner and used one of the V8 cans from when Hubs was in the hospital.
Today: went to mass and brought Holy Communion home to Hubs.
Did a whole lot of dishes.
Vegged the rest of the day so far alternately reading the Dope and watching L&O:SVU.
Need to get butt in gear and make dinner, do more dishes and perhaps get a load of laundry going.
ETA: FCM I’m sorry the grands are sick; hope they get over it quickly. Are they allergic to penicillin/derivatives?
Speaking of (potentially) apocalyptic, Iran is attacking Israel with drones, and may follow up with cruise missiles. Just what the world needed, more fighting in the Middle East.

For about the last two hours, major news organizations are reporting that Iran has launched perhaps 100 drones against Israel, possibly to be followed by cruise missiles. The cable networks (including where I live,m BBC News) are on full alert, with live feeds from Tel Aviv, and scores of retired military officers, diplomats and scholars ready to comment. It’s a strange period because at this moment Israel has not yet been struck by anything yet. But when something happens over the next few hou…
