(OLD) The Dessert MMP!

Happy Saturday!

I had a post going yesterday, and it went POOF!

No park today, I’m just not feeling it anymore.
Maybe I’ll get it back.

The emergency clinic called today to tell me they were refunding some of my money.
One of Ripple’s final acts of defiance was to bite the tech.
This led to many apologies from the vet, and he said the tech was angry that he was telling us about it. It was a minor bite, barely a scratch, but under Maryland law all bites have to be reported and the dog must be quarantined for 10 days to check for Rabies or tested for Rabies. We knew Ripple did not have 10 days, so he would have to be tested.
I know the procedure for testing for Rabies, and I guess I can understand that some people would get upset, but to me, dead is dead. My son thinks it is a simple blood test, and I’m not going to tell him anything different. No matter what anyway, I would never make somebody go through the Rabies shots.
So anyway, they refunded us the cremation fee because the county took care of that.
We didn’t want the ashes back; my son only wanted the ink footprint.

We have the flight scheduled for the new puppy. He’ll be here on the 24th, but I have to go to Ronald Reagan National Airport to get him, with is about a 2 hour drive each way. I have never been there, so I’d better leave additional time to get lost. His flight comes in at 5:38pm, so I will be driving in the dark to get home. I won’t mind once I get closer to home. I’ll get somebody besides my son to go with me. He isn’t a very good navigator. I have one friend who knows how to get there, but she will be out of town that week.
I want somebody to go with me though. They can hold the puppy while I drive. Poor thing will be on a nonstop flight for 5 hours. I’m sure he is going to need to potty and get a drink.

Very nice work FlyBoy

and you too Wheelie

And VanGo

Nice work too for Hippie and JtC
Very beautiful flowers as well JtC

I have no special skills or talents.

{{{Ooopsie and Bailey}}} I hope Bailey is back to normal soon.

I hope you find Darci soon Doggio
When Ruby got lost the volunteers in this area put up cameras and set out dog food to try and spot her. She ran off into a wooded area as well.

We put the houseplants outside today.
They always do well out there. They look so bad it’s kind of embarrassing.
I found out the breeder sent me the Hoya Heart.
I kind of suspected her, because she always types in all CAPS, and she referred to Ripple as an ‘Amazing Friend.’ That sounds like her.

My son is coming around and seems to be getting more excited about the puppy. I asked him if he wanted to name him, and he is thinking about it. He wants to wait to see the pup.

I hope you feel better soon, RealFish

Primordial General Mayhem does sound interesting.

Hope the move goes smoothly FCM

I think ferrets are cute, but they make me nervous. I haven’t been around them enough to get used to them.
I’ve always wanted a hedgehog, but I don’t need more stuff to care for right now.

I know what you mean Bumba, I want my Ripple back.
I miss him horribly, as does Echo. She is getting better, but the first few days when she looked for him just broke my heart for her. She was with us when he passed, but I think she didn’t understand.

Cupcakes, I would just ask if they could use some help with tuition.
No muss, no fuss, just a simple question.

This is why my son didn’t like the name Ripple.
Shar Pei are aloof, reserved, dignified, and stoic.
Supposed to be, but Echo missed that memo.
Ripple is not a dignified name. However, Ripple could be quite silly and playful when the mood hit him.
He loved to be teased, and loved to tease back.
I was always warning my son, don’t do to other dogs what we can do with Ripple. Most dogs don’t like to be teased.

Raisin is somewhat common for black Shar Pei.
I looked up dried apricot, and found Khumani, although it just means apricot. That could work, though.
Different, but not too weird.

@Sahirrnee just above … If the new dog is a female and you really insist on something punny about wrinkly dogs, may I humbly suggest Sultana.

That is a somewhat exotic term for a golden-colored raisin made from light-colored grapes. AIUI, the term is rather more common in UK / commonwealth English than in US English. But it is valid 'Murrican too. Really. And in its other definition, it’s a reference to royalty, with all that implies about regal manner & reserved demeanor. And self-designated importance around your house.

If the dog is male you could name it Sultan and see if anyone is smart enough to get the joke about a Male Sultana.

Or, since dogs have no idea about gendered naming conventions in English, even if it’s male name it Sultana and see how many people give you grief for mis-gendering you dog. At which point you can edumacate them about golden raisins. Delivered with a withering glance down your nose and a very haugthy delivery.

@Wheelz: Damn, that bed is coming together smartly. Looks like quality workmanship and a quality kit. Should give many years of good service.

@Johnny_L.A: great greenhouse. I too once had built a bed kinda like that which was an abject failure at drainage. Might be worth a test before SWMBO fills the house with plants that she doesn’t want to move again.

As to me:
Turns out this morning that I’d snuck out of the house so successfully she was surprised when she awoke at her normal late morning time & I was gone. Of course before I left home I’d sent her a text which arrived during her phone’s quiet hours, so the mystery of my absence didn’t last long. We’ve done this a time or three.

Made it home nominally, then after a suitable re-union we walked to the Spanish tapas place for light dinner and a glass of Crianza for me, Sangria for Her Ladyship.

The weather for later tonight here is shaping up similarly to last night. So tomorrow may be an instant replay of today. I’ll be going to bed a bit earlier to try to get ahead of it.

Cheers all! And extra special {{hugs}} to the afflicted.

Evening all. Posted the bird pics on Facebook (if anyone wants to go look, PM me) and that was about as active as I got until I nuked the Lean Cuisine Fettuccine Alfredo and ate it. Will try out the new caulking around the bathtub sometime tomorrow. Time will depend if I go to the gym or not.

Sari, this may help if the pupper needs to go potty before the trip home: Pet Relief Areas Wish I lived closer, have been through DCA a lot of times and probably could help, but I think you and companion can probably manage. Make sure you know where to make pickup, each airline may have someplace different.

FCM, I’ve heard of the term ‘pulling wires’, but you two were really pulling wires. And I agree with Cat Glove, some of the stuff (maybe most related in her mind with FIL) can be let go now by MIL.

Flyboy, lovely work on the greenhouse, and Wheelie that Murphy is coming together nicely. And Sultan or Sultana would be great names for dogs

All rightie now, dishes to the dishwasher and need to make up a spreadsheet for water consumption (it’s becoming almost a habit–it’s 7pm, go check the water meter–we’ll see how long that lasts). All y’all take care.
.

Well, I did say, ‘Son of a whore!’ once, and today I said, ‘Seriously?’

Actually, much of what she’s shedding is from her kitchen. Like she doesn’t bake any longer, but she brought FIVE pie plates from FL. Not to mention tons of storage containers, several very large soup pots, from the days when she cooked for a crowd, EIGHT dinner place settings, a metric butt-ton of coffee mugs… that sort of thing. She’s giving FIL’s recliner to FCD - it’s going to live in our basement. But she is finally going to donate his clothes and shoes to a thrift store.

Oh, yeah, and she’s giving her two wooden ducks to FCD because he wants them. I have no idea why, but they’ll live in his office.

I was falling asleep in my recliner, so I got up and cleaned the critter fountain, then scrubbed the stove top. I think I’m officially ready for bed now.

I’m all for wooden ducks.

Yay for the travel plans for the new pupper sari! I’ve found that GoogleMaps or Waze to be good navigation tools when synced to your vehicle. I even found the correct part of the MTSU campus today (GoogleMaps had individual buildings listed. Delivery services tend to use it heavily) when I took Nelson to Bark in the 'Boro. I do like the name Sultana or Sultan too.

I live in just about the middle of a metropolitan area with half a million people. It is a twenty minute drive on the freeway in any direction to get to open country. There are two creeks that run through my neighborhood. One is half a mile east (.8k), the other about two (3.2k) miles west. They are fed from a lake formed by a dam on the outskirts of town to the north. That being said, a young fox seems to have taken up residency in the next door neighbor’s back yard. She only lives here part time, but she is not going to like it.

Is today Nelson’s BD I thought I saw a happy birthday, but I didn’t see a post saying it was.

I often see replies to posts that I missed.

Thanks for the link.

I hope the nanny plans on meeting me at the pickup area.
It looks like a long damn walk to get to Alaska Airlines.

Ripple was shipped as cargo, so I didn’t even have to go into the airport.
The cargo buildings are off to the side.
That was a very easy pickup.
Because Shar Pei are Brachycephalic, they can’t be shipped as cargo anymore.

Echo was picked up at BWI in either the drop off or pick up area. Very easy to get to.
There’s a park right by the airport where we went to let her potty, drink, and stretch her legs.
Or I could have stopped at my mother’s since she lived about 10 minutes away.

I’m nervous about being in unfamiliar territory. I hope the nanny plans on meeting me outside.

What was funny when I picked up Ripple
His sister was shipped at the same time, going to a family near the armpit.
We got there early and there was a little waiting room, with about 4 chairs in there.
This little old man comes out, looks at men and says I’ll bet you are waiting on one of the puppies.
I said how do you know.
He said you have that I am waiting for my puppy look on your face.
I was hoping to meet the people picking up Ripple’s sister.
As we were leaving though, I saw a man and woman heading into the building and I thought that must be the other pup’s owners
Now I know what he meant by the I’m waiting to pick up my puppy look.

Some of us are super creative, one of us can count to 10 and learned (after many bad words) to not only read the instructions, but to follow them.

Yes, I am working it upside down for now because I’m too lazy to reach all the way across the canvas to work.

Coming from you, that is quite the compliment, thank you!

I have known ferret owners in the past and they seem to try to outdoe eahc other with the poop stories, LOL. I’ll bet you had much fun with yours.

Gardening is a hobby. A nice garden is good for the environment and the souls of everyone who is able to see it.

What a sweet looking pupper. The sleeve doesn’t look tight enough to really restrict air flow and if that is what the patient will accept, that’s what has to happen. Good girl, Baily. Now start barking again!!!

I hope you all have a great time together. Do traditional Japanese inns still have those wonderful deep tubs? I used to love those.

Thank you. Actually, it is needlepoint. The big difference between needlepoint and embroidery is that needlepoint uses blunt needles. I do NOT get along well with sharp needles and it is hard to get blood out of overdyed thread.

Thanks, your cookbook is so fun looking! That would end up as a coffee table book in my home cause it is way to pretty to smudge with tomato sauce. (I’m a messy cook…but I am a great cleaner-upper so it works out.)

Happy birthday scritches for Nelson, what a good boy!

I’d just ask outright. “I can help a little financially, is that something you would like?”

You are a good person for wanting to help.

The foliage is one of the reasons I love them so much, they are so lush looking. I have a “white” one that is trying to bloom, but I think it was getting too much sun. I’ve moved it and lowered the bamboo shades to give them all more shade. Grumbles about hubs and the climbing roses. Mutters about the lack of handy mine shafts these days.

That sounds like quite the saga, I’m glad you made it home safely. I send good thoughts at your Hubs on a regular basis, btw. Cancer sucks.

Maybe not a columbine, but still fab.

The cactus bloom is starting. They bloom at night to avoid loosing moisture so bats are vital for the local ecology. The neighborhood is covered with big patches of the white flowers you see here. We are planning another wildflower drive next week, I’ll take pics to share.

Cracks up. Hubs also cracked up when he came to see what I was laughing about.

Hurray! I wonder if you might consider putting water out for the overworked parents. Food would probably be appreciated but then you would have all of the birds in the neighborhood visiting which would stress mommy right out.

Very nice. I agree that you might want to put pavers inside due to drainage concerns. Also, because standing on pavers is easier on the balance than standing on wet river rock.

WOW! That looks so attractive and everything looks so very square.

You are a better man than me, I’d have looked at the parts and then posted a help wanted ad on Nextdoor. No way would I have tried to do such things even when I was young.

I’m so verklempt over this.

I do understand why you aren’t telling your son, but I agree with you that dead is dead.

I sure do hope you can find someone to go with you, poor lil guy will want some comfort after that long, scary plane trip. (Would you mind sharing what this is costing…do remember that I paid 2500 for a somewhat defective cat, so I’m not judging, just curious.)

You have an amazing amount of love and knowledge of dogs. You have an amazing amount of tolerance to bullshit. You have many talents that you use without thinking every day.

Up from naptime, having a Sazarac. No sign of Darci, and Spot has eaten all the dog food in her dish. In addition to eating his cat food. Pig.

I wish i could do that for you. :dog:

I have a wooden duck pen holder.

It was a job of work. Three days (Thursday: Building the base, Friday: Back wall and front wall. Today, Finishing up). Very fiddly, and the instructions were not always clear – and they referred back to previous steps very often. If there were two of me, I could have done it in one day.

Nope. Just Nope.

I’d have hired two people to build and one to figure out the instructions.

I’ll bet you did a much better job than my imaginary unskilled laborers would have though.

Meh, I’m missing two bolts on two posts, and (I think) I have extra bolts on two others. That remains to be seen. It turns out there are more braces that weren’t called out when they should have been called out. Nevertheless, it seems sturdy. Since it is a lightweight structure, I would have liked pre-drilled holes for eye bolts for tying down the corners. (A manufacturer should assume some consumers live in areas that experience high winds.)

It certainly would have been easier to hire someone to build it, but I’m not sure anyone I’d hire has the same experience as the manufacturer’s engineers.

I take no credit for that. The instructions made it very clear that the frame MUST BE SQUARE IN ALL DIRECTIONS TO FUNCTION PROPERLY. I was thinking I’d have to adjust and fiddle and tweak and so forth.
I propped the thing up on the wall and got out the level, and all those bubbles were right smack dab in the middle without me having to do a damn thing.

I honestly doubt that would have happened if you had not done all the prior work properly. If you mess up the first part, everything else will be wonky as well, so good job Sir!

Up, caffeinated, and sheveled. Off today. We’re having a morning monsoon. I shall clean, and maybe take a walk between storms(and judging by the “mews” from the other room, Spot is not a big fan of rain.

I saw the picture before I read your post and for a second, I thought my sister was posting here. She and my mom live northeast of Baltimore in an area that used to be all agriculture and horse farms, but has now become far too developed for my taste. However, Mom has almost 7 acres, most of which is still wooded, and many creatures abide there.

And my sister feeds them at her “Critter Cafe” - pretty much leftovers and mystery foods from the back of the fridge. Those of you who follow her on FB know she gets foxes, trash pandas, deer, chipmunks, squirrels, and probably others that I’ve forgotten. Anyway, your pic looked like the ones she posts.

sari - it’s some decades since I’ve been to Reagan National, but I don’t recall it being that big an airport. I was going to suggest park-n-ride on Metro, but I don’t think you can take a pup on the train. I don’t know that I’ve ever parked there, but I’m sure it’s a royal pain in the butt, being DC and all. Good luck! I’d help you out, but you’re coming from the wrong direction.

Please don’t encourage doggio - he’ll only get worse! :stuck_out_tongue:

Regarding the wooden ducks, when we were packing them out of Ocala, FCD claimed these two metal fowl, which now reside in the front window.

I don’t know why he wanted them - it’s not like they were part of his childhood memories. I don’t think his mom had them for more than 20 years. And it’s pretty much the same with the two green wooden ducks. I just don’t get it…

Just got a call from the boatyard manager - apparently Sandpiper vented some diesel overboard. They were containing the mess in the yard, but we need to go check inside. Dammit. FCD is asleep and it’s raining. I’m not going to wake him - the mess will still be there when he gets up. Dammit.

Not a good way to begin the day. ugh.

Yeah, Happy Sunday… :stuck_out_tongue:
