Evening all. Did some sweating at the gym this afternoon and am thinking about going back over for a second session to work off the Cheeseburger and cookies I just finished, but probably will just sloth instead and watch the tackleball game. Precipitation is due about 2-3am so we’ll see if I can do my Firday shopping or not. Some predictions are for 3-6" which if it occurs will pretty much shut this city down. Just have to see what it’s like when I get up.
Well, I did try the elliptical trainer today, which is close, but frankly it baffles me and I was worried I was going to hurt myself trying to figure it out, so passed on it.
Oopsie, winds like those really drive the wind chill factor, so staying inside is a pretty good idea, IMHO. Finished my last apple tonight and I was going to get bananas tomorrow, but that’s a ‘we’ll see’ right now.
Yep, I just remember the Arab saying "In’shallah (as God wills it) that they use in almost any situation like that one.
lucky, welcome back, fascinating story about the crabbers, went out on a boat that goes after the big snow crabs when I visited Alaska, it was set up for tourists but still an interesting education. Hope you are feeling better.
Knew there was a reason I like you so much…
My work here is done.
But not totally thrilled, if I understand correctly…
And that’s all for tonight. Waiting to see what I wake up to tomorrow…
Howdy Y’all! We watched a bit of Jimmy Carter’s state funeral. That seemed a RDOS thing to do. I think I would like to attend a church service at the National Cathedral one day as it is an Episcopal church. Then again that would mean travel which means I would have to pack clothes and such and make arrangements for travel and find a place to stay. This makes me tired just to think about it, so probably never gonna happen. We et up leftovers and even washed up the various containers by hand. We also chilled with Netflix and munched popcorn. Oh and we day drank. Life is just so fast paced here at da cave!
swampy That sounds like a perfect day, well aside from the funeral. I am very looking forward to someday being a RDOS.
It is looking like I will have much work with the museum, like taming their shop into something usable. This afternoon I put together a new SawStop table saw that had been sitting around for a year.
I’ve been given permission to be ruthless with throwing things away. I love throwing things away that are just taking up space. (The terrible pack rat says.) They gotta be useful.
Like there are 5- 4 drawer file cabinets full of planning documents for exhibitions that are now long ago in dumpsters. I saw some today from an exhibit we did in 2003. Can’t we throw that crap away? Second day, but I’ve worked with the museum a lot in the past, but all new people. One of my tasks is to create a workable shop, but I’m going to need to get rid of a lot of useless things.
Not real hungry tonight, so all I had was a couple strips of bacon. Gonna save the schmatlz for something tomorrow. Prolly toss it with some pasta and various things.
That is an Asian beauty treatment. You put your feet in the tank and the fish nibble off all of the dead skin. I did it once while I was in Asia. It tickled. A lot.
It was blue sky and sunny for the morning and then it started snowing again in the afternoon. Not falling fast, more like the fog was freezing drop by drop. It hasn’t been over 30 for several days and those guys are out there busting their butts to deliver my needlepoint threads. You best believe I want to spoil the delivery guys, everything always ends up on our porch or under the carport. We ain’t playing hide and seek in the snow!
Ya wanna be careful about letting folks know that lest they start expecting it on a regular basis!
You are such a delight! Sometimes when I’m getting irritated at petty stuff, I think about you and how gracefully you would handle it. Often that helps.
We do have very good taste in canes!!!
I used to time Hubs when we knew he would be stuck in Chatterland and would call with an “emergency” at an agreed on time.
If we were really going to get a dog, we would also want a Chesty Puller dawg, if I could get over the ethical issues. They don’t live longer than 8-10 years and even the pups are mostly couch potatoes. Super cute, though. I’ve known more than a few during my life and they have always been sweet dogs.
GG and Jolene are the last for us. I don’t want my pets to outlive me, nobody would spoil them like we do and they shouldn’t be split up.
I agree, thanks!
I probably shouldn’t share this…but I used to ride a '86 Harley Davidson Sportster to work every day. Despite me putting quiet pipes on it, it was not a quiet machine. I worked for the county and every so often the Board of Supervisors or the County Attorneys would piss me off enough that I would go home from work and put my LOUD drag pipes on my ride.
The next day I would spend my breaks/lunch changing into biker gear and racing around the courthouse setting off every single car alarm just to watch the suits come running out. Then I would put my quiet pipes back on and sedately continue my normal commute with normal work clothes.
So…the answer is yes. Car alarms did help my mental health back when I was working.
I am jealous. None of our neighbors are doing anything entertaining around here.
One winter in AZ it snowed bad enough for the food stamp office to close. The kids across the street had a dirt driveway with a lip as they drove up to the street. We watched the male run out and get in his car and try to leave. He was slipping and sliding and almost hit her car at one point. He would get frustrated and go back inside then come back out and try again. After a while his whole front yard was nothing but churned mud and the street was getting splattered. He gave up and went inside, but a while later we heard him trying again and ran back to the windows to see him finally manage to get all four wheels on the street. We cheered for him.
He was back in less than half an hour, triumphantly bearing his bag of dollar store frozen pizzas.
You are so right. It is easy to say “it’s only things and things can be replaced”. Well, no, many of our memory objects cannot be replaced. Plus, it is so nice to have a large stash of hobby stuff so you always know that you have just the tool you need because you bought it at the seminar 17 years ago when you learned how to do bead work.
My heart breaks for all of those folks losing everything to fire.
That is the Sam Vimes theory of wealth. Poor people cannot afford to buy things that help them to be more comfortable and not as poor.
Please be sure that all of your tech toys are fully charged. That might stop Murphy from shutting your power off.
I hate to say this, but I think that almost anything would be better than trying to do that single handedly.
MOM!!! Tell them to stop with the noise!!!
Such a handsome guy, I love the whiskers.
I’ll bet you were jazzed for the rest of the day, how very cool is that?
R/O ice water with lemon! Or cucumber slices! Or strawberry slices! Or just plain pure water! I know you don’t get any calories with diet drinks but water helps flush out your system and I’ll bet you would lose a few pounds just by making that change.
And now the power is flickering. It is under 10F outside…yes I did go out the check, it is cold. I think it will be warmer under blankets and cats so off I go for the night.
I napped with Spot. I watched some hockey. I had a Mai Tai and Smoked Paprika Chicken.
Bingo
Smol Panther is Alert!
Outstanding! My best work was mainly posted in breakrooms:
There is a story here.
I watched a bit too. It seems wrong to have “Amazing Grace” without the pipes, though.
And my Funeral Mass would likely be a bunch of priests heaving me into a dumpster while the bishop performs the Rite of Exorcism.
metalmouse How are you getting to sleep after that much caffeine? Granted I’m not a coffee or soda drinker anymore, so I don’t know how it goes. I drink flavored seltzer. Plus booze in the evening.
I walked to the post office to mail my sister’s birthday card, and it was dark and locked. No sign, just locked. A nice lady walking by called, “It’s closed for the National Day of Mourning for Jimmy Carter!” Oh. Makes sense. I stuck the card in a mailbox and willn just hope it gets to Louisiana by Tuesday.
While I was out, Ms. Dog’s person asked if I’d be willing to dog walk because despite two walks today, Ms. Dog “has ants in her pants.” I would’ve thought pants were a prerequisite for getting said ants, but what do I know? I said I couldn’t because of the USPS stop, but if I’d known it was closed, I would have happily taken her.
What a sweet and kind thing to say! I have my feisty side, but sometimes my shy side overtakes it. When the neighbors were blasting their music on Christmas Day, I literally thought, “Come on. What would Jane the Cane do?” It gave me the impetus to go over and pound. My daughter also thinks you’re the cat’s pajamas.
Or did Spot nap with you? Who started it?
Oh, so you think you rate the deluxe service, eh?
No way. You’re a lifetime member. You can check out any time you like, but you can never leave.
We were absolutely rockin’ those two the last coupla shifts!
I guess I work with Ye Olde Fartes.
You know anyone named Karen?
Cuz they all pretty much hate pop culture right now.
Yeah, he’s one of the few black cats I’ve ever seen that doesn’t have the contrasting white whiskers.
He’s black, through & through to his very soul.
{ guitar solo! }
Guess who stapled herself today?
Spoilered for the squeamish, but really, it’s not that bad:
I mean, like, through the nail bed and then out via the fingertip.
I had to get S.M. to get the damn thing back out - I was trying to do it myself but only succeeded in thoroughly oooging out the rest of the crew.
(She was like, “Let’s go in the hallway for this.” E.g. “Let’s go where people can’t see this.”)
Oddly? Didn’t hurt. Still doesn’t. It’s a bit tender to pressure, but considering a piece of shrapnel went through me you’d think there would be more pain.
Only one teeeeeensy droplet of blood, and that was it.
Morning, mumpers! It’s currently -4c/25f with a predicted high of 0c/32f, and cloudy. Weather app says “And the fucking weatherman said, let there be cold, fuckers!” And there was. We had a hard frost overnight so the pavements were very icy as I was making my weary way to irk this morning.
I’m glad you found someone who is good and easy to talk to. And congrats on the weight loss!
That’s the best way to look at it - you could hold out for a higher price but you’d have that worry hanging over you, and all the while you’re waiting, you would still have the responsibility of the property and maintenance etc. Sometimes you just have to take the offer and move on with your life. Now it’s over, you can put it out of your mind and focus on other things instead.
I ventured out yesterday evening to collect 'im indoors from his train, my tyre pressure light came on as we were heading home. That’ll be a job for Saturday on my way home from the gym as I want to do it in daylight.
My mum’s philosophy was that a real bout of bad weather would mean the power went off and potentially the gas supply too, so with no means of cooking, we’d be living on sandwiches. Thus, bread! Of course, we never had that much bad weather where I grew up but somehow she was always twitchy if there wasn’t enough bread in the house.
I like a good workout on the pushme-pullyou If we’re thinking of the same machine, you get into a rhythm with it fairly quickly but when you’re starting, it helps to work either your hands or feet until you get used to it. If you use the push and pull the handles, it will move your feet too, and vice versa. Once you get used to how it works, it’ll feel much more “normal”.
That’s good news, and getting their shop under control also sounds like something that would be fun for you. Throwing stuff out is very therapeutic too!
Lily How fabulous, seeing your work out in the open like that! I had a couple of things published in anthologies, it makes me feel all warm and special
Ouch! I’m glad SM was on hand (heh!) to sort you out, hope you got plenty of antiseptic on it too.
The Travel Gods were messing with me yesterday so the journey home was fraught. I was glad to get back in the house after the travel trauma. I had dinner a little earlier than usual, then went out to defrost the car so I could go and fetch 'im indoors from his train. He had said he was due to arrive around 8.30pm so I had planned to leave in time for that, then he messaged to say it would be 8.15pm instead. I had just made a cup of tea, of course, so that went in the thermal mug and I took it with me. Ended up drinking it while I was still waiting for him to appear.
I did have a much better night’s sleep though, no car alarms going off anywhere which was good. Shoe, the idiot neighbour has about 8 cars in the yard behind his house, I think it was one of those that caused the problem. Thing is, it was probably triggered by a cat jumping on and off it, because even if you could get into the yard, there are two roller-shutter gates between the cars and the road outside so you’d have no chance getting any of the vehicles out - plus I think at least five of them haven’t been moved in ages so they most likely wouldn’t start in the first place.
Another boring day at irk, I have two meetings this morning though, that should help pass the time.
When I was working I had some facilities like yours as customers. The head maintenance person was the point of contact in most. The service I provided was done semiannually and, with a few exceptions, I never reported to the same person twice. There is something about that job that leads to a high turnover rate.
Good Mornin’ Y’all! Up and caffeinatin’. YAWN ‘Tis 36 Amurrkin out and cloudy with a predicted high of 51 and cloudy. Rain is predicted around six p.m. through the night. We shall see. We will be bears who brunch at Eggs Up later this mornin’. This will take care of today’s main need to feed. RDOS inactivities will take up the rest of the day as is our wont.
VanGo glad the gig is goin’ well. Hope it becomes permanent. Looks to me like they could you.
Lily tres cool about the poem!
JtC have no fear. I can go from useful to useless in nuttin’ fast.
Now I need more caffeine. I suppose I should purtify and don attire acceptable for bein’ amongst the great unwashed as well. Such efforts just to consume traitorous crab cakes!
I would do this, but there’s no phone reception inside the guy’s building - at least not for Consumer Cellular - which is why I suggested the alarm. You can pick a tone that sounds just like a phone ringing.
Speaking of car alarms - does anyone remember the ones that would talk to you? “Step back, you are too close!” It would yell at you if you happened to be parked next to it and you were getting into your car. It’s been decades - I guess they weren’t very popular, or effective.
I was thinking if our house caught fire, we should grab both computer towers - my whole brain is in my CPU!
Ah - so that’s why there was no mail delivery. Not that it much matters - we pretty much just get junk. Well, except when I get beautiful, hand-made cards from Mumpers (I have 3!!! )
I’m sitting here ooooging out - glad it wasn’t worse! < shudder >
That’s what my in-laws did, but to the very end, MIL was saying that they could have gotten more. Yeah, maybe, but they might have had to pay another month or two of HOA fees and electricity, plus get someone to keep the place mowed, and what it something broke while they were 800 miles away? How much is aggravation worth?
We’re supposed to get all the way up to freezing for today’s high! Then maybe 1-3" of snow overnight, depending on who you believe. Did I mention I tracked down the guy who cleared our driveway? Found him on Nextdoor, and I contacted him for future help. I now have his phone # so I can text him. He doesn’t have a set rate - he takes what one gives him to cover the fuel in his tractor. So we’ll keep a couple of $50 bills on hand just in case. Clearing our driveway and mailbox might take him 10-15 minutes, so I think $50 is fair.
It’s laundry day, and I think I’ll also make a run to Food Lion since Diet Coke is BOGO. I’ll also check out the ground beef - I’ve got some cabbage that needs to be stuffed! And I’ll walk the aisles to make sure I don’t need anything else. I may even head to Aldi. We’ll see.
I forgot to refill the pellet stove last night, so that was my first chore this morning, and it’s not even 7AM!! I may have a productive day - can you imagine??
