It’s amazing. Here we are, almost Canada. Nowhere near the vast variety of ethnic foods as back in L.A., and we have this great authentic southern Indian restaurant. The Spousal Unit wondered why we don’t eat there more often. (I’ll have to remind her she likes it more often. Full disclosure: This time it was her idea.)
Warmed up enough this morning to snow, so I drove to work (in the dark) in a nice soft snow fluttering down. Snowed off and on during the day, and again when I came home (in the dark). Weather app says it’s about -20C, so I plugged in the car so I won’t have any excuse not to go to work tomorrow (@OldOlds : I live on the shores of the Mighty Wascana, about 50° N; due north of @Baker, I think).
Good day at work; made major progress on my big project. When I started it, it was just me. The PTB approved of it, and now I’ve discovered I’ve become a project manager (informal), getting people lined up to do different tasks. I’ve never had a project before, let alone had to manage one. Even have a sort-of budget. Worked today on the French stuff.
Piper Mutt 1, a mini-Yorkie of about 5 pounds, is not happy. “What on earth have you done, letting it get so cold when I go out in the morning? And why haven’t you cleaned up all this white stuff? It’s cold on my delicate little paws!! I think I’ll just poop and pee inside until I see an improvement in the management of this joint.”
Piper Mutt 2, on the other hand, is about 75 pounds, a big black galoot with ginger eyebrows, who wouldn’t be out of place on any local farm. “Out! Need to go out! Play in the white stuff! I love it! Can you get more?”
Just filled up the dishwasher and turned it on; am contemplating hand-washing the leftover dishes that didn’t fit in. So far, just contemplating. May instead do some Welsh on Duolingo.
The day/date thing used to kick my ass while I was working, it certainly hasn’t gotten any better since. My big challenge tomorrow is to call my doctor and reschedule my appointment because I couldn’t get my blood drawn today. That will involve two appointments three days apart and not on weekends. During certain times because I can’t drive after dark and don’t want to get up before 9.
I pity the nice receptionist, I’m sure the conversation will be even more painful for her than for me.
I still have shock over that all the time. WV is about the size of Yavapai County and Yavapai County is about half the size of Dallas/Fort Worth.
In his defense, he did sterilize them with cheap vodka first.
I’m not a fan of the Chicken Corn Chowder but agree that their pea soup is pretty good.
Our full grown Maine Coon, twenty pounds of long fur and fuzzy feet, bred to play in the snow is complaining that the floor is too cold now that it is 20F outside. We are planning on getting more insulation sprayed in the crawl space before next winter, he’s too big to carry around and too whiny to ignore.
So I’m saying all that to say Why the heck haven’t you cleaned up all of that horrible white stuff for your furry overlord?
“Spatchcock” is a funny word. Nearly any sentence that uses it is funny.
At the end of the day, it’s easier to just set out a training mat for her. Her house-training, never the best, has taken a nose-dive as she hit geriatric puppydom.
ETA: Just back from letting Piper Mutt 2 out in the back yard, for about the 7th time this evening.
I got quite irritated yesterday making brunch when my eggs slid too well on the pan to get a spatula under.
Yay, got called for jury duty. Not what I need right now is time away from work. They’ll give me $40 a day. This is only the second time I’ve gotten notice, and the last time I called the day before and they said don’t bother. Hoping that happens again.
90+ posts for just one day. Not sure what the MMP record is, but this must be pretty close to it.
Went to 5 Guys and the burger was good and the fries absolutely delicious (I have to be careful going there or I might permanently clog my arteries on their fries alone). Then spend a couple hours in the gym doing sweat-penance and got home about 9:30pm. Will be heading off to bed here when I finish this, one result of all the gym time is that I am not taking naps so being up 16-17 hours isn’t unusual for me. Down to 28F and my tire pressure is below 30psi, so probably will stop at the tire place tomorrow and have them inflated (recommended is 36psi).
Sticky Buns, as others have commented, smart move doing the paperwork now, doesn’t hurt if it’s never needed but if it is, always have a paper trail…
My favorite science T-shirt has two atoms depicted, one saying “I lost an electron” and the other saying “are you positive?” I know, geeky science humor but I love ti.
red, you wouldn’t believe how many apartments they are building down here, I figure in about 1 years they will be so overbuilt they will drop rates to attract people to pretty much new buildings…at least that’s my plan…
Pardon me, what? (Old dude who has shoveled his share of snow over the years and is happto do without).
Cutlass (because it is an old Olds(mobile)),I am in North Ali-bama.
Coppertone, sounds like Moley is adopting you.
JtC, thanks for the definition of glittens; like 52, I had never heard of them by that name. Neat!
Sari, yeah, kitty litter works well. Be careful.
lily, probably need about $1,000 of work sometime early in 2025 as I am coming up on the 75,000 mile mark. I’m a Campbells soup guy, but soup and candy work well together, don’t they?
shoe, I’m pretty good on days, since I have my weekly to-do/menu list in front of me at the computer. Still can’t get the hang of Thursdays, though… I’ve played pool only twice, both in a strip club in Kileen,Texas.
Piper, love the doggo’s reaction to the cold.
VanGo, hope you can get out of jury duty this time. Just tell the judge you’d be a great juror because you can tell guilty people with one look-just like that! (borrowed from George Carlin)
And it’s 11:30pm, I’ve been up about 17 hours, so off to bed I go. Catch y’all tomorrow.
Boston, or, more properly, just outside, in Brookline. It’s been a bitterly cold night, yet I took a walk, not too far, just to get some fresh air, and exercise in the bargain, as I’m retired, have some health issues, can only walk so far, not due to age, not per se, but injury, and a serious, albeit non-life threatening condition (leg and foot aneurysms), for which there is treatment available, but no real cure, as such.
I wish a pleasant year and good health to all on these message boards.
John (still no snow here, or maybe a dusting here and there, and they’re predicting a lot of it this winter ).
Morning, mumpers! It’s currently 2c/35f with a predicted high of 4c/38f and snow showers. Weather app says “It’s fucking snowing. That means you can fucking stay home and masturbate. Or not.” I’m going with “not” on that one, and it’s sunny outside although the sky is kind of grey but not rain cloud grey.
They do, with varying results! The weather causes a lot of problems on our railways - leaves on the line, the wrong kind of rain etc - but it takes a lot to cause a total shutdown. Storms usually mean cancellations as trains have to run at a slower speed through some areas, sometimes there are landslides that close of sections of track but that usually results in buses being used to replace rail services so the train would take you as far as it could, then a bus would take you to the next station with available trains. Ice is the biggest problem as that makes the tracks very slippery and also interferes with the fancy tech that means the signallers know where the trains are!
Definitely not a question you really want to ask! Glad to hear they had a back-up saw to do the job. Have you got heat now?
Ours has been and gone, although my friends around the country are reporting lots of black ice and some very nasty conditions underfoot for pedestrians.
nellie I hope you are emailing the manager on a regular basis - it’s time they upped their game from emailing the company who owns the apartment to going up there themselves and hammering on the door.
That’s good news, especially since you’ve had to contend with the meeces for such a long time.
VanGo I hope you manage to get out of jury service this time too - maybe you could just say something very objectionable in your first session?
Yesterday was not a bad day - I irked at home all day although I did slope off at lunchtime to do the grocery run. Logged out of irk and did a Rockfit class, then since I’d had to clear all the cat toys and cardboard boxes off the living room floor (to make space for me to be flailing around), I decided to run the rollsuck as well. Then I had a soak in the bath. Thus, I am exercised, the house is clean and I am too. Didn’t bother washing my hair as I have no meetings today and no reason to go outside. Tomorrow I’m back on campus so I will wash it then, in order to be presentable.
I had leftover curry for dinner last night, then hauled the biiiiiig recycling bin out to the kerb for today’s collection (which was about 7am). I did venture out when I got up so I could haul the biiiiig big back to where it lives.
More irk today, and I shall be cooking tonight. I bought some beef yesterday which I don’t have very often, so tonight’s dinner will be cheesy beef with crispy potatoes. A whopping 498 cals, according to the recipe. I have to do campus food today too, so I’ll put the chicken in a Maggi bag and shove that in the oven when I go down to make another cup of tea.
I also have a load of laundry in the washer that’s almost finished the cycle. We have two laundry baskets (mine and his). For some reason, 'im indoors puts his laundry in his own basket even though I am the one who does the washing, and I do both lots together. We have very little that isn’t black, so it all goes in together. Bedding gets done separately because that’s a full load by itself. Hand towels and tea towels go in with the normal wash, but the big bath towels go on a higher temperature boil wash once in a while. I usually put the hand towels in that one too, but otherwise they just go in with the normal wash.
Good Mornin’ Y’all! Up and caffeinatin’. YAWN ‘Tis 28 Amurrkin out and clear with a predicted high of 49 and N.O.S. Winter has returned. I shall deal with some errands this mornin’ and then spend the rest of the day in high RDOS inactivities. Sup will be tacos ‘n fixin’s, refried beans and rice. Fartfest to follow.
Now I need more caffeine and to feed rumbly tummy. Then, alas and bother, I suppose I must purtify myself and don attire acceptable for bein’ amongst the great unwashed. Woe!
My dad’s mother, who was born and raised in Poland, never did, but then I don’t remember her cooking anything. (The only thing I remember eating at her house were Vienna Fingers, and she kept the package in the oven.) My other grandmother (First generation American) cooked a lot, but never any Polish dishes as I recall, and I never heard of kutya. It sounds like it was very much a regional thing and I don’t think either branch of my family was from that region.
I used to buy the light version of Progresso soups, but I haven’t seen them in Food Lion in ages. Do they not make it any longer? Bummer if that’s the case.
YAY!! I was starting to worry. And using it as a phone rest is genius!! I think I need to make myself one now.
I actually do this, especially since I have some items I always hand-wash anyway. Except last night, while I filled the greasy air fryer “drawer” with hot soapy water to soak, well, the water is no longer hot or soapy, but it is still there in the sink, accusing me of neglect. I should probably do something with it today.
Last time I had it here, it was $15/day and it’s been at least a decade. I think. Maybe not that long.
I like the one that says “Science doesn’t care what you believe”
North of us in Charles county (and maybe also in Prince Georges county - not sure where the line is) they’re putting in massive apartment communities. First thing I thought was how awful the traffic will be, and it’s pretty bad there now! I’m assuming these are meant for DC commuters because I’m not aware of any businesses coming into the area. Not that it affects me - I rarely venture there.
What the heck is the wrong kind of rain? A deluge that causes flooding of the rails? Raining toads? Freezing rain?
I think the snow is finally done here - I turned on the back porch light and didn’t see anything falling, but it looks like we got an additional inch or two last night. Our street is among the many that got only a single plow pass according to the county map, unless another came thru last night and didn’t report. I guess we’ll see when we head to the credit union for our 9:30 appointment. I do find it interesting that the main roads are not showing any status, yet I kniow full well they’re going to be in the best shape.
Kids are off school today and Daughter is working from home. I asked why she wasn’t just going to the office near her and she said she works better without pants (and she didn’t mean in a skirt…)
So apart from our little errand, I think we’ll be staying put. I may or may not push some snow off the driveway. It’s supposed to get a bit above freezing and maybe some sun will help dry the drive. Maybe.
My friend Frank and I walked to high school together every day. We would leave early and stop in at a dive bar a couple of blocks from school where we would spend and hour or so drinking coffee and shooting pool. We spent a lot of time there after school as well. We also hung around a downtown pool hall pretty often
In college I discovered snooker and played any time I could find someone to play with. I was pretty good. Life got in the way and I didn’t play as often. Later I figured out that one need to keep at it to maintain their skills.
There is a similar timeline for my chess game too.
It’s 39F and foggy at the moment. The morning will be foggy, but it should clear off, leaving us with a partly cloudy afternoon and a high temperature of 43F. I want some snow, damn it.
Yikes, you were all very busy yesterday. It took me a bit to catch up!
Nellie, you and your neighbors shouldn’t have to put up with Noise Pests daily. Can you all band together or make a pact to have all of you come to management and get them to do something? Maybe if they receive a barrage of complaints, they’ll do something.
JtC, I’m glad you’re back and that it was just because you needed an internet detox.
Coppertone, I’m glad you have a reprieve on the housing situation.
Lily, I love marzipan. It brings back so many childhood Christmas memories, both of the years I spent in Germany and then from the gift boxes my Oma used to send at Christmas.
I’m a fan of Nutty Buddies, not so much of the other Little Debbie stuff. I used to love the Hostess Apple pies, too. I occasionally see the Peanut Butter crunch bars, but it’s scarce.
I was down with intense stomach issues yesterday, and if I’m honest, I’m not doing much better today. However, my work cell was blowing up yesterday, so I plan to address anything I couldn’t address yesterday via phone, meet with the MPAs, and then take the rest of the day off.
I also need to address the issue from last week. That won’t be a good conversation, but I must have it.
When I first saw the word glittens, I thought of glitter-covered mittens and thought, “How fancy”!
I have a hamper in the bedroom where our dirties are tossed each night. Mainly to keep Maisie and Buster away from the socks. I sort the laundry when I do it: towels and bedding each week, dark regular wash (including jeans), dark delicates, and light delicates. I air-dry most of my shirts, blouses, and cardigans. I also air-dry some of my husband’s shirts. Dog blankets and crate pads are washed separately from our clothes and blankets. All the laundry except sheets and towels is cold water wash. Unders are warm water. All of our socks are black or gray, with some white. The white socks are washed with towels and sheets. Since my towels are generally dark, I can’t use bleach on them.
Finally, I’m from the PNW and live on the wet side of the Cascades.
And a good 2sDay morning all. Slept well and have broken fast already. Not much on the agenda today after yesterday’s stuff, may get the swimming I missed yesterday swun today; we’ll see. 28F currently but heading to 37F and no liquid falling from the sky in either liquid or crystalline status.
john_b_2, welcome and feel free to stick around awhile. Thanks for the well-wishes and the best to you in 2025.
It could be added to a shirt but I’m neutron on it.
boo fae, sounds like you had a good day for both mind and body.
FCM, happy birthday(s) to Mom and SIL.
I do too, but this is Ali-bama and I don’t want to rile up the countryside…
Taters, hope you get to feeling better, stomach issues are never fun and if they continue, I’d suggest seeing a doctor.
And that’s all for the morning missive. Take care all.
