It is still snowing and the glare is making it hard to stitch sometimes. Not that I’m doing a whole lot of stitching anyhow, the snow keeps distracting me and I keep losing count.
The trash did not get picked up and the lid has another big mound on it. Hubs was getting cabin fever and though he should go to the grocery store. Then he realized that we can’t pull the utility cart through snow, so wanted to go to Lowes for a snow shovel.
He is not going to be shoveling any snow for the rest of his life so I didn’t see any reason to spend money on one, plus I doubted that they had any shovels left anyhow. I distracted him with the Japanese steakhouse and sushi and off we went.
It was a pretty drive, the road was clear and everything looked clean and serene. We stopped at the grocery sto for a few things, but we didn’t really need anything, he was just boredom shopping.
That’s a sure sign of a person who really does know how to cook. Eggs are complicated!
You went to a strip club to play pool.
Happy birthday to both of them!
Ain’t no reason you can’t glam a pair of glittens!
George isn’t really that big, she makes him look like a giant. George is 20 lbs which is about average for a Maine Coon - and he’s about 90% fur. Jolene is only 9 lbs which makes him look much bigger.
He is very warm and snuggly, though
Yeah, I cringe at the prices for new hardbacks as well. I don’t often read books twice so I get my fiction from the library.
Repacked all the Christmas decorations this afternoon. The cat helped by racing back and forth like a lunatic. The place looks bare, but I’m glad it’s done and we can get on with the horror that the new year promises to be.
Ordered Chinese from a place we’ve never eaten at. Our standby place closed their doors in December after 50 years. Too bad, as it is really close and the food was very good. Hopefully this place will be decent.
Due to the snow I delayed the Christmas haircut until this afternoon. Then lunch out, turkey meatloaf and mashed potatoes. Back home now and chair and cat time until a meet up thing tonight.
Liirogue, I’m usually in the choir, people are a bit more mixed there. If I go to a church where I’m not singing I will instinctively go to the gender side, even if they aren’t orthodox. The only thing that will have me horrified or clutching pearls is an Orthodox Church using an organ that came with the building. There was a Greek bishop that would get very worked up about that. There was a sledgehammer…
Kutya is to me very yummy. It isn’t an every day thing. Christmas and epiphany eve, and memorial services. It is a grain with honey. Some people will throw it nuts, raisins, even chocolate. Love the stuff.
The perogies ( or vareniki) served on Christmas Eve/epiphany eve are served boiled, no butter, no oil. I only eat them with huge amounts of sour cream, so I skip them that night. The 2 eves are nearly identical just switch out born for baptized and Jordan river for Bethlehem. Same dinner, same service.
For epiphany there are people elbowing each other trying to get the newly blessed water into their bottles. Some places will go jumping into the nearest body of water. Here in Philly depending on church location, that means either the Delaware or schuylkill river.
New calendar parishes go on or after Jan. 6, old calendar go on or after Jan. 19th.
We had a little bit of flurries, just enough to show on my car. From what I’m reading, it looks like we’re supposed to get a fair amount Friday/Saturday.
Ooh. I need to buy some of those! At the moment, I have nothing to keep my poor digits warm. And as I’m hoping to be doing more deliveries, warm hands are pretty important!
My biggest problem remembering which day is which is while BtY is out of school for breaks. Is today Tuesday? Wednesday? Day of Snoop? I just don’t know.
Keeping my fingers crossed for you. I’ve been called 3 times in Nashville alone. The first two I was able to get out of. The kids were still young enough that I couldn’t spend that much time away. But the last one, I went in. I was sent home after being brought in as a possible juror. I was done in 2 hours. What gets me, though, is that I’ve been here for almost 20 years, and I’ve been summoned 3 times while Hubby has never been called. How is that fair?!!!
Regarding the hamper question, I have one in the bathroom for Hubby and my clothes, 1 in the kids’ room for their stuff, and two laundry baskets in use (and three more that are holding kids’ crap). I’m a horrible, horrible person who doesn’t actually separate my laundry, beyond bedding and towels. If I’ve got something that needs special care, I take care of that but most of the clothes we have are bog standard.
As per usual in the pond, things have been a bit crazy. Busy crazy more than bad crazy, but crazy none-the-less. Let’s see what I can remember.
Christmas was good. It was very low-key, but it was a nice one. The kids were happy, and, for the most part, Hubby and I just relaxed. We spent the break playing a lot of board games. My best friend came up for New Years and we played even more games there. All in all, it has been a good holiday.
Our van is now going to have to be used as a trade in. I was doing deliveries right before Christmas and it started acting weird. Apparently, I need six fuel injectors. $2000. Trading it in for a hybrid is going to be far better, I think. We just need to get the money to buy the new one.
Speaking of that, tomorrow I’ll be meeting with a buying company that will buy Dad’s property. They’re a flipper company that will buy everything inside the house as is. I’m stressing about all of it so much that I think this is the better way to go. The sale of the property must be pretty heavily on my mind, though, since I keep having dreams that Dad is still alive. In a few of them, it’s caused problems with trying to sell things, plus Dad being pissed at me for doing so. I’m hoping that after tomorrow and I’ve got a closing date that these dreams will stop.
BtY failed all of his classes for last quarter. But he’s starting to realize that he’s got to put in more effort than he had been. He’s got a project due for his AP Computer Science class and I found him this morning working on it without being asked to do so. I’m hoping the same will keep happening for the rest of the school year. We’ve got a meeting on Friday to get more accommodations put into his IEP.
CtE has finally gotten set up for her first semester of community college. She has chosen her classes but not put them in yet. She starts at the end of the month. I really think giving her the semester off was the best thing for her. She seems far more ready to get back into learning. I’m hoping things continue to go well for her. She’s also started her volunteering at the library once a week, which she’s really enjoying. Next up, getting her her permit and teaching her how to drive so I don’t have to drive her to all of her classes.
I’m stepping up more with Sunday Assembly. This weekend is the monthly Assembly and I’m taking part quite a bit. I’m singing with the Unnamed Assembly Band and talking about being a recovering people pleaser. I’m also taking care of the program. This is a good thing for me, I think.
I’m also starting a few things up as part of my 101 in 1001. I’m trying to write every day for a year (and this counts), take a picture every day for a year, and read and log my reading every day for a year. It’s still early on but I’m proud of the start I’ve gotten. I’m trying to update my blog on it once a week. It’s all part of my “Making a better Fishy” plan. Because a Better Fishy is better for all!
Well…the table was located strategically between 3 stage dancers…
Snark (finally googled what Rilchiam was), I don’t go to bookstores much anymore but prefer the BAM over the Ampersand. Hope hubs can find some deals.
FCM, nice of neighbor to help you out. I can remember those end-of-driveway messes…worked them while singing “16 tons…”
Cookie, I watch those videos of the slo-motion slides too, have done that sort of slide myself but never hit a car (ended up in a freeway median and later on a front yard). Hope the Chinese food is good.
Flyboy, hope this water pump works better.
Sticky Buns, I have my dental appointment on the 28th of this month; hopefully I will have better luck.
Oopsie, agree, talk to the one who is going to do the work, not their agent…
JtC, I could always send him my snow shovel, think it has been used once in the past 10-12 years…
Real Fish, like Hubby, I’ve never been called for Jury duty in 23 years of being here; why is a mystery I don’t pretend to understand. And am thinking about a Toyota Hybrid for my next car planned for this year. And I think you are making the best of the situation by moving your Dad’s property that way; you might have got more selling it yourself but the hassle is probably not worth it. Best of luck to the youngn’s on their learning experiences.
As for me, I was 1 pool length (25 yards) from 2,000 yards and a break when I cramped up bad. Fortunately the pool is only 4 ft deep and I was in a lane next to the side, so I was able to get to the side and hang on until I could straighten out. Spent the rest of gym time in the jacuzzi or sauna. Home now and will probably spend the evening getting caught up on my NY TImes (a week behind as usual).
We got the new furnace put in without any trouble. The old thermostat must have been amiss, because we have to set the new one higher to get the same comfort. I went back to the doc-in-a-box today. Though I can hear a bit with the bad ear, I’ve got a rattle-y cough to go with it. They took an x-ray, and referred me to an ENT. That’s ear, nose, and throat doc, but it always make me think of Frodo Baggins. FCM, I’ve heard of “Sunday go-to-meetin’ clothes,” but never a Meeting Hat… Long ago, I got a jury duty letter. I filled out the form, which asked if I was likely to believe a policeman. (No.) Do you trust lawyers? (No.) I never got called again.
Howdy Y’all! Stuff got did and then high RDOS inactivities ensued. We had an early sup. Fartfest is imminent. Also it’s almost time for Netflix, chill and popcorn.
Taters hope you feel better soonest.
MOOOOOOM happy birthday to your mom and SIL. Enjoy gettin’ food tossed at you tonight.
Cookie hope everything is ok with Sadie. I like watchin’ those kind of videos also.
JtC yay for gettin’ out of the house for a bit. OYKW and I do things that get us out of da cave for a bit durin’ the week. Else wise we would become hermits, RDOS that we are.
??? glad the new furnace is up and runnin’. Haven’t been summoned for jury duty in forever. I’ve always thought it would be fun to be summoned and if asked about how I feel about the death penalty reply: “I think we should bring back public hangin’s in the town square. Families could pack a picnic basket and make a day of it.”
It’s good to hear from you again. It sounds like you are still swimming against the tide, but at least progress is happening! Awesome about BtY doing schoolwork without being nagged, I know you hate doing that sort of thing.
I must confess to being surprised that you folks who live in the cold country aren’t familiar with them. Maybe its because most of you are too smart to smoke tobacco.
I’m glad to know that she is feeling better! I hope the Chinese was good.
It has been snowing all day here.
I am SO happy that we got most of the windows replaced last month, we would have spent so much money trying to keep it warm inside with the old leaky ones.
I’ll bet I could sell it for a pretty penny today or even tomorrow.
He’s looking at snowplow attachments for his riding lawnmower. That’s fine, he can have one of those.
What I’m hearing from folks at the gym is that this is a very unusual event, and that it has been years since the last big snowfall. Doesn’t surprise me, the world is heating up it has been since the 70’s.
That is very scary. It is the main reason I don’t like the gym, I know they have cameras on the pool but if I get in trouble it will be minutes at least before anyone comes to help.
I’ve gotten a few letters but they didn’t give us those Get Out of Jail Free answers.
I have served. I do feel that jury duty is important so will go if selected. Or, I did before I served on two ugly murder cases. Now I will just tell them that I’m too old to serve because I need to use the restroom at least once an hour.
This year I did something I haven’t done for years. I did an advent/12 day thing. As the nativity fast is 40 days the 24 day calendars don’t work well. Previously I had a cute wee tree that was on a box of drawers, 24 of course, there was a wee ornament for each day until the 25th when the tree would be fully decorated.
To make it work I doubled up drawers until there were 40 ornaments. I would do this until the tree broke. It was from Avon so no chance of replacing it.
This year I did a 24 day Harry Potter calendar and a 12 day birdmoss, that got me to 36 days, just a bit off.
I did enjoy it and can see why people find this fun. I did share some of the items with friends, if I wasn’t going to use them.
I walked to the corner store and though its 24, our bodies adapt to the cold.
By Monday rumor has it the temps may actually hit 32!
Must get up early tomorrow to bus to Orientation.
Deciding to have a favorite staple for supper-Dorito salad!
Saw the ortho today for the results of my ankle MRI. Fortunately nothing is broken, no bone chips, tendons and ligaments are all in one piece. He said words to the effect of that’s a bad ass sprain. I start physical therapy next week. He gave me clearance Clarence to ride so my first ride of the new year will be the weekend of the 18th.
Dinner was pan fried gnocchi with sautéed mushrooms and spinach and two pieces of bacon. My tummy is happy.
Back from B-day supper. The place we wanted to go to had a 1-hour wait (at 4:30???) so we went to the other, more expensive one. It was OK, but not really that great, and their meals didn’t include the appetizer, so FCD was bummed. He was looking forward to chicken livers. He got eel a la carte instead. Anyway, shrimp and scallops for me, filet for him, his eel, and an iced tea, with the mandatory 20% tip came to $103!!! It was absolutely not that good.
Along with family were 2 guys SIL knows from work - both young sailors - like early 20s young! It was interesting listening to them talk with FCD, comparing notes. It ain’t the Navy we knew!
The restaurant was right next to JoAnn’s and I needed some velcro to fix one of FCD’s jackets, so that was convenient. But now we’re home, I’m in my fuzzy robe, and chillage shall commence shortly.
Schools are closed again tomorrow - SIL will bring the grands here in the morning. So I won’t be going with FCD to see the boat guy. I’m really sorry he has to drive alone, but I wasn’t too keen on seeing boat guy - he talks and talks and talks and talks… Instead, I’ll wrangle the kids. It’ll be a basement day.
Best it gets here in $2.50. I always keep 2-4 cans on hand.

Thanks for stopping in. Good luck to the kids, and < crossed fingers > for the vehicle buying >
So you’re saying it was a good play to play with your stick?
“HOO HOOM, Mr. Nott. You appear to have an orc stuck in your throat.” - Dr. Treebeard
FCD to waitress: “I’ll have the eel, a la carte.”
Kitchen line cook: < slaps live Moray on to serving trolley, and pushes it out door >
Doe’s Eat Place in Greenville, MS is priced like that. But seeing the steak is pretty much 3/4 of a cow, and they have armed valet parking, it’s worth the price.
I don’t remember if I’ve posted this recipe, but since I just made it again, here you go:
A few weeks ago I made it with pomelo, shrimp, and chicken. Tonight was shrimp and pink grapefruit. Serve it with sticky rice and a cuke salad with a dash of sesame oil.
We were in flyboy’s neck of the woods today because there just aren’t that many places to do our NEXUS interviews. We’re very happy to have fast lane passes for Canada.
It was a Nippy 20 feels like 7 degrees this morning when I went out to get my son.
Only 2 out of the 10 people in his department showed up for irk. He still got out two hours early, irk is slow right now and some other departments were sent over to help.
If everybody had shown up, he probably would have gotten out around midnight. I suspect/hope layoffs are coming soon. In the past they would sometimes call and ask if he wanted to take the day off without pay because it doesn’t make sense to have everybody come in and work 4-5 hours. One night he went in at 7 and got off at 840. That is not even worth going in. Better to let the people like him, who are not dependent on making as much as possible, stay home and let the people who really need the money get a full shift in.
For me the only hard part of the snow is walking from the house to the garage. I still want to put in a patio and I want part of it covered. I think that is going to be a priority this spring.
This keyboard is taking time to get used to.
When it comes to laundry, I am very picky about what gets washed with what.
Everything from the waist down gets washed together, and since all of it is black, no worries there. Everything from the waist up gets washed together. Depending on how much there is, I may separate the blacks from the colors. Washcloths have their own basket next to the shower. All of them are white and are washed separately with bleach. Bar mops get tossed in with them, even though they have blue stripes. Towels go together. Sheets and pillowcases go together. Throw rugs get their own load. Dog blankets get their own load. Sometimes I’ll put their harnesses in a pillow case to wash with them. They usually get washed twice. Hats, scarves, and gloves go with shirts or towels. Coats go by themselves unless I need to throw a towel in for balance. Rags can go with the throw rugs, unless they are microfiber, then they go by themselves. Blankets/throws go together. Comforter goes by itself as nothing else will fit with it. Same with mattress pad.
Unlike my son, who throws everything in together Moonday morning before he goes to bed. Then he lives out of the dryer until Thorsday, when he takes what is left of his stuff out and my washing starts.
I got a new comforter and it is the best, taffety and fleece, very soft and floofy. I don’t wake up cold anymore.
I hope we are done with mice. There is a cleaner I watch on youtube. He is autistic and his idea of relaxing is to clean hoarder houses, putting things in order is good for him. He does it for free using the money he makes from youtube. He says if you live in the middle of cornfields, no matter how clean your house, you will never get rid of mice.
There’s a woman in Norway who does this too. She is in Texas now. She did a house in Maryland and I wish I had known she was coming here. I have a friend who needs her apartment cleaned out. She was quoted $5000.00 and the crew would have to wear hazmat suits. I’m not able to do it. One of our other friends tried, but she is almost 80 and that is just too dangerous for her. Walking through a hoard is not good for people with older bones and bad balance. The woman from Norway also does it for free because she likes to clean, the dirtier the better.
I told her if she found somebody to do it I could use my truck to haul stuff to the dump, except she lives in a different county and I won’t be allowed to. And, I’m not driving a truckload of stinky trash 2 hours to bring it back up to this county, where it would probably have to sit in the garage overnight as the dump closes at 330 and you have to be on the scales by 3.
I guess I am staying up, my son just texted he will probably get off irk at midnight. I guess everybody showed up tonight. No excuse not to, the roads are good.
Well, the road I live on isn’t clear, but it’s not really a problem. You just have to drive a little slower, and watch out for the damn deer. One ran across the road in front of me this evening, so I stopped to make sure none were coming behind him. I have noticed the bucks are usually by themselves.
Sorry Ooopie, I can’t help not liking Little Debbie. I still like Twinkies, Devil Dogs, and Yankee Doodles IF I am in the mood. You can keep all the ring dings, ho hos, swiss rolls, snoballs.
I’ll eat oreos if somebody puts them in front of me, but I won’t go out of my way to buy them. I like some Pepperidge Farm cookies. I don’t even like Girl Scout cookies.
Most of the packaged stuff has an off taste to me.
