Nephew just called me to talk about it. His boss’ mom has it and it’s different than we remember it being, in that he can actually talk to someone if he falls and say, “Call my grandson to help me up” instead of instant ambulance. We’re going to see if it’s covered under his insurance and if it is, then great. If it isn’t, then we figure out how to pay for it.
Thanks for the hugs, support and letting me know I’m not alone in this. Not that I thought I was but… yeah.
We walked around the auction for a bit, then went to Salsa’s for lunch, followed by a ride to the marina to make sure our boat is still floating. (It is.) And now we’re home. We’ll take MIL back to her place eventually. All in all, it’s been a pretty nice day, tho I still have to clean the critter fountain. Plus MIL wants to try a sports bra, so I need to measure her and figure out the size, then order a couple to see if she likes them. It doesn’t like like any place around here carries the front closure style, and she can’t manage to pull one over her head - limited range of motion after her shoulder surgery.
Cold morning, but it’s warmed up into the 50s.
No park because Petey still isn’t well and I had planned to sleep in anyway.
What ADORABLE puppies!
So cute Taters!
Double the trouble, double the fun!
I had thought about getting a stool for the bed, but like Red said, I’d probably fall off it. Which is okay if I fall onto the bed.
The dogs need a bench to get onto the bed, except Echo, who has springs in her legs.
I don’t want to spend any money though, so I may try a stool, otherwise I’ll keep shoving myself onto it.
I haven’t done much today. We got all the dogs’ toenails trimmed. Poor Echo was so upset because last time my son cut her nail too short. She panted and shook the whole time.
I’ve ordered groceries, and we have to pick them up at 5.
Not much else.
I need to do laundry sometime, and vacuuming is very needed. The vacuum is at the old house though, so that will have to wait until we go over there tomorrow and bring it back here.
I was going to suggest Life Alert for your father, RealFish.
My mother had one (or something similar) and the new ones can tell if you fall without you having to do anything.
Afternoon all. Am sitting listening to a guitar player (he’s pretty good) and waiting for the 5:15pm dinner time. Quiet day, had a storm this afternoon but it’s sunny out there now so maybe I’ll do something this evening (probably lose more money at blackjack). I really don’t care for cruising days, I go on these trips to see things. But we finish with three days at sea so much reading and internetting will be done then.
Real fish, hope insurance will work for you and dad, it’s something we all face sooner or later. Many hugggs sent your way.
taters, absolutely gorgeous puppers.
No, the knee was trying to enter a sinkhole swimming area, thought I had one more step than I did and went into the water rather awkwardly. But it’s much better now. As for the blackjack, I know the odds are with the house so I never bet more than I can afford (not that I like dropping $75 bucks. mind you).
Ok, battery is getting low and the early dinner hour approaches, so I’ll sign out now and maybe get one more note to this MMP. Take care all.
I happened to look at the Anchorage paper today. Holy crap! They got 30 inches of snow over the last couple of days! Now, you may think that this would be common in Alaska, but not in Anchorage, and certainly not at this time of year. We had a dump like that one year while living there, but it was in March. I had to like one of the “Driving in Snow Tips” that the Highway Patrol put out: “The best time of year to have your snow tires put on was last week.” Anchorage got buried last year, so this doesn’t bode well for them.
Beans soup and corn bread eaten. I didn’t have enough buttermilk, and the yogurt had gone over, so I substituted Doritos spinach dip for the missing 1/3 cup. Tasted just fine.
Howdy Y’all! Been a dreary, drizzly day here. Glad to be inside and dry. We napped, we day drank, we et. I browned some ground beast with onion and bell pepper, then melted sharp cheddar cheese all over it. This was et on toasted hoagie buns along with some oven fries. 'Twas a nummy and warm thing to eat on a chilly day. My Dawgs play at six p.m., so there’s that to look forward to.
MetalMouse good to see you check in. Hope the knee is less achy. Don’t lose too much at blackjack.
{{{RealFish}}} the Life Alert thingy might be a good deal for both your dad and you, as well as other family. Glad he was OK today.
Cookie bean soup and cornbread sounds good!
Taters the puppehs are cuteness overload!!!
MOOOOOOM I am sure your MIL would be thrilled to know that her bra needs were made known to a bunch of random intartoobz strangers.
Mobile phones are not great for oldsters. My late aged MIL wanted one so if she was tooling around the grounds in her power chair and ran off into the grass she could call the staff for help. I was reluctant, but finally relented and got her one, and simplified the heck out of it.
She could remember to put it into her power chair’s basket. Sometimes. She could never remember to charge it. It was always off, dead, or both.
The one thing we expected, but that experience also rapidly bore out, was that it was utterly foolish to call it, get no answer, and consider that as evidence that Mom was ill or dead. That was about the 1 in a million chance. The other 999,999 chances were that it was battery dead, turned off, or more than 4 feet away from her deaf ears and therefore inaudible while ringing at max volume.
Your Dad may be more alert, more able to keep stuff charged, and more able to hear it ring. Or not. You know him. But it’s (probably) pointless and inappropriate to think that him not answering means anything.
Seaholm or Groves? Hubs’ family moved to Birmingham when he was about 12. They went to Groves. He thinks that the Iacocca kid(s) went to Seaholm. One of my freshmen roommates went to Seaholm but I think she’s about 2 or 3 yrs older than FCD.
Busy afternoon. We went to Home Depot for a bunch of stuff; however, they didn’t have the furnace filter in stock so off we went to Lowe’s. Since DSW (shoe warehouse) was in the same strip, we went there next and each of us found new slippers. Mine were on the 60% off rack so I have new slippers for $8. Next Hubs wanted to look for a new robe for when he’s in the hospital. First he went to TJ Max, next Burlington, next Old Navy. While he was checking those stores, I went to Barnes & Noble to get a Christmas present for our daughter. Every year she wants the same thing: a page a day tear-off calendar called WeRateDogs by Matt Nelson. It wasn’t in stock so they ordered it for me. Then we met back up and he asked to go to Meijer but their shipment of robes was recalled due to shipping container degradation from being soaked with water and there was concern about mold. So, Hubs didn’t get a robe today. Then we went to Dearborn Sausage and bought pierogi, knockwurst and ham. When we got in the car, Hubs exclaimed “hey, we’re 2 blocks from Roman Village, let’s go there for dinner.” So, we did. As the hostess was taking us to the table, I asked if the bag from Dearborn Sausage could go into their refrigerator; she should no one had ever asked before but OK. I had my favorite, cannelloni; Hubs had a salad and a pizza calzone. Their bread is soooo good. We put olive oil and parm cheese on a plate and dip the hot from the oven bread into it. Yummmmm.
Had a lazy morning here than after late breakfast we headed out for Xmas tchotchkes. We had pretty well gotten rid of 100% of our respective Christmas history over the moves, so with the new tree yesterday we were starting from zero.
Headed off to Hobby Lobby in the blazing hot sun coming from the warm blue sky. They have an amazing array of Xmas tchotchkes. Aisles and aisle of everything from crafty crap to make / assemble your own to fully store-bought. The stock was widely varied and plentiful. The store had plenty of patrons but no crowding or frenzy. Yet.
Got a couple of boxes of ornaments, a couple of individual themed ones, some pine cones, some bells, a Christmas decorated seasonal dish drying pad (don’t ask), and a tree skirt. Plus some cheapo Xmas colored beads for making crafty bracelets. And some other random crafty crap not xmas-related.
Although we’d 90% filled out Xmas needs, Target was in the same strip center so why not? They had about 10% as much floor area as Hobby Lobby had dedicated to Xmas. And 5% as much stuff as Hobby Lobby and it already looked like locusts had come through. Color me amazed; back in the day Target was a thorough source for all things XMas. Not anymore. Totally a perfunctory square-filling exercise for them. Did find one more box of novel interesting ornaments and that was that. We think we’re fully stocked for tree trimming, but won’t know until we put it up some time after T-day. First things first; Next step is gotta slaughter a turkey and cook too much starchy food in a couple weeks.
Managed to under-eat late breakfast s at 3pm we were starving. Headed out to a nice place and had an early (not early bird) dinner. French dip sandwich for Her Ladyship, roast half-chicken for me. And a grilled artichoke appetizer.
Now home, recuperating, and here in an hour or two planning to try again for the live music out nearby that we failed at last night.
Go for the cornbread. (A pot of greens to go with would be good too)

Anyway, this is the pic of the puppies that was sent to me.
Squee!!! Any thoughts on names yet, or will you wait to see their personalities?
Mooooooom, when I first began working where I do now, I had to buy some bras without underwires to get through security several times a day. I tried sports bras, but, like your MIL, a shoulder injury made them impossible to put on. I’ve been getting a lot of ads lately for front close bras for seniors (I’m officially old now, I guess). Having worn them before, I would recommend that they are well fitted, otherwise, a hug could result in…uhhhh…one of the tatas getting loose.
The apartment is cleaned, laundry done, a pair of PJ pants hemmed, a pair of jeans mended, Nelson bathed (and conditioned, which has helped his dry skin itch) and a quick trip to Zorba’s for a gyro and Greek side salad made.
I re-pulled my hamstring getting into the car, so I’m gimpy again. Given that this has been an issue since early this summer, I really need to get a referral to a specialist from my PCP. I’m getting tired of hurting.
Evening all. Dinner has been dined on and gambling has taken place, was down to my last $20 of betting money and then had a bit of a run and got $60 ahead whereupon I tipped the dealer $10 and took the other $50 with me. So what started out like a disaster ended up ok. Probably turn in early, meeting time for my tour is 8am and breakfast must be consumed. Will end up spending that dough I won, a group of us are going to the onboard Steak restaurant tomorrow night and that will cost some dollars. But so far I have avoided the tourist traps so I have some reserves.
cookie, that’s a lot of snow–I imagine that you will be seeing your share before winter is over.
cat glove, pilot, glad to see your contributions to the American economy.
red, hope you heal up soon. I’m walking fairly normally and the knee isn’t hurting but walking with a gimpy leg has pulled a couple of other things, so still not planning on doing a Marathon anytime soon.
Ok, probably be out of touch for a couple of days until I’m in the Pacific via the Canal. All y’all take care.
Howdy Y’all! ‘Tis halftime and my DAWGS are up 28-14 over the old maids Ole Miss. Halftime stuff bores me so thought I’d pop in here. Looks like some folk had a productive day doin’ this and that. Good for y’all.
MetalMouse have fun goin’ through the canal. Bet it’ll be a hoot. Conga rats on the blackjack winnin’s. What better way to enjoy the winnin’s than by eatin’ a juicy steak!
Mrs. L.A. saw that we have some chipped beef in the cupboard, so she has requested SOB for breakfast. I’ll have to go to the corner market for some biscuits in the morning.
I’m so sorry this is happening, it is so hard when our parents start going downhill.
I would suggest you visit his local senior center and ask for suggestions. There are many resources for low-income elderly folks who need a little help, sadly there isn’t an easily googled list available. The volunteers at the senior center will know many of those resources and you might find something helpful on their bulletin board.
You are a very good DIL.
Priorities are SO important!!!
Yeah, I’ve considered getting a bench for the end of the bed…VBC isn’t jumping like she did when she was a kitten…but I just know that I’d trip over it in the middle of the night.
Our waterbed is low enough for me, but the spare bed has a regular mattress as well as the hospital lift equipment under it which makes it far to tall for comfort (for this short person). Short people need hospital beds too!!!
I just happen to know that you can get Thanksgiving themed cookie cutters from da jungle. I think you should do it!
Too much cute!!!
I will never EVER bring another baby critter into our home, but I’m sure looking forward to hearing all about your adventures!
We don’t rent, but we also have all of our locks re-keyed and buy padlocks for gates and outbuildings that can also be keyed the same. It makes things much easier, plus…the peace of mind thing.
The Best Cat in the World wanted NOTHING to do with the doors to outside and would panic if he managed to get between a hooman and an opened door. He was an inside kitten, then grew up into a stinky boy and became an outside cat. Once he became an inside cat again, he refused to risk becoming an outside cat again.
He was such a good kitty, I sure do miss him.
Mom got her first smart phone before we did and still uses it and her tablet for all of her interweb needs, but she’s pretty deaf now, and takes naps, and leaves her phone in the other room so even if she can hear it, she can’t get to it as fast as she could back when she was 70.
My standard message is “Hey Mom, it’s your oldest. Call me when you find your phone cause I want to ask about X.” I have to say what I want her to ask me about because I will forget why I called before she wakes up and finds her phone and notices she has a message, then calls me back. Without listening to the message so we then have a nice chat without discussing X because it has been long forgotten, LOL!
That sounds so yummy, once I get the bread thing working I will be doing that all the time. And then I will look like the Philsbury Dough boy, but I’ll be happy!!!
Today’s bread was much better than yesterday’s. I didn’t shape the loaves as well as I could have, but I did throw a cup of grated parm cheese in with a couple of teaspoons of garlic powder. T’was yummy, but not enough garlic. Next time I’ll use fresh.
VBC is annoyed at GG tonight. When I wash a load of towels, I toss them on the bed and let her bury herself in the warmth. Today she followed me into the bedroom, jumped on the bed to be covered with warm towels and GG jumped up and demanded his share of towels as well. She stuck her nose up in the air and strutted off to curl up on the scratching post. GG didn’t want to snooze on snubbed towels but is too big to share the scratching post anymore so got pretty whiney until hubs distracted him. The snubbed towels are still in a pile on the bed, so I should probably go and do something with them.
Quick rundown, and then I’ll circle back around to y’all after I’m somewhat recovered from Long Night (note: “yesterday” means Friday, it’s almost 3:30 Sunday morning but I’m going by how days feel, not what the clock sez)
Yesterday, I burnt myself on an oven (not badly, it won’t blister, plus now I have matching oven scars on each arm so I’m symmetrical again) but it still stung like hell & distracted me
and
G.C. pissed me off yesterday (I’ll go into detail some other time) and I’m oscillating between being mad enough to call it quits, and thinking I might be overreacting, and also wondering if either he or I are just looking for an easy out
and
I have tomorrow off but didn’t tell G.C. (see above) but do have tentative plans to hang with my friend with the hot tub and many cats.
I haven’t seen her in ages, and I feel a need to marinade in a long, warm soak with another semi-old lady for a while.
… Plus, cats.
… Plus, she still works at the dispo, so a nice restorative nap on her couch is foreseeable
and
New Guy we just hired seems to be working out quite well. He’s conscientious, asks good questions, moves fast, and tonight already dropped a coupla really good quips so he’s gonna fit in, if he sticks around
and
Funny of the night: I took a phone order from what was audibly an older black guy. He tells me his name is Spears, and without missing a beat adds, “Like Britney, but we not related.”
I thought that was hilarious, related it to Oven Master (who looked in dire need of a laugh too) who then related the whole thing to someone else who’d come around the corner just in time to go, “Awww, what’s so funny?”
I rang him up when he picked up his order, and told him that his joke had made its way around the whole kitchen.
Y’all the smile on his face I mean, he just beamed. He got more satisfaction out of knowing his joke landed well, than he did out of telling it in the first place, which in turn made me feel so good.
So of course I told the crew all that, too, big circular story that it was. Hey, it was nearly 1 in the damn morning, we take whatever joy we can find.
It took several smashed toes for me to remember the bench/shoe rack at the foot of our bed. But I finally learned, and so can you!! It helps that we keep the bedroom door open a bit and the night light from the hall illumiinates the bench.
I’ve noticed more places are starting to add a service charge if you pay your bill by credit card. The latest is the insurance company that covers our boat - 2.3% of a nearly $900 premium is a pretty big service charge - around $20 just to use my VISA? I don’t think so. I’ll do direct debit. Dammit. We encountered the same thing at a t-shirt shop in Rehoboth Beach last year, and I’ve noticed some gas stations have different prices for cash or charge. I dunno, I kinda feel like you should build in the fees into the prices. On the other hand, if I pay cash, why should I underwrite those using credit? Except I don’t like carrying around a lot of cash. Dammit.
Why is life so hard? < cue mournful violin music >
I never did clean the critter fountain yesterday, so that’s on today’s list. And I need to wrap the turtle book for Tobias (did I mention that Daughter and SIL got him a real live turtle???) His slightly early b-day party is at 2 and I’m hoping it’s all over by 4. Daughter already told us she’s not planning a meal - just snacks. It’ll just be family (SIL’s mom and sister are coming) so not a big to-do. As if Tobias has any idea what’s going on…
That’ll be my day. Along with whatever else comes up.
Good Mornin’ Y’all! Up and caffeinatin’. YAWN ‘Tis 53 Amurrkin out and cloudy with a predicted high of 64 and cloudy for the day. The big item on today’s agenda is deheathenization wherein I have verger duty. After that we shall have our stewardship brunch in the Parish Hall. It will be catered by a really good local caterer and I have been promised a mimosa! That will take care of today’s main need to feed. Any other need will be via forage. It will take some doin’ to squeeze it all in, but sloth, general overall uselessness, nappage, and day drinkin’ are also scheduled.
My DAWGS won big time (52-17) over Ole Miss. Also they clenched the SEC eastern division. That happened before the game started as Mizzery whomped up on Tennessee AKA the Rocky Flops earlier in the day. So it will be my DAWGS and Alabammy for the championship. WOOF! WOOF! WOOF!
shoe hope all works out for the best, whatever that may be, between GC and you. Also, loved the funny of the night. He made y’alls night and y’all made his night.
MOOOOOOM happy early bday to The Tobester!
Now I need more caffeine and to feed rumbly tummy. Then purtification for deheathenization must commence.
