A big YAY to shoe for the replacement reach-in finally arriving, and an even bigger YAY to BBBoo for the new grandbaby finally arriving!!

Today I’ve been entertaining myself by firing up my old 16" Sony Vaio laptop. I bought it new in 2010, and it was my primary personal computer until I got my current Dell all-in-one in 2018. At first I kept the Vaio around for the built-in DVD player/burner, and in 2020 I used it for some of my first online voice lessons, but eventually I got an external burner and an external Blu-ray player and started using my primary computer for lessons: until this morning, I don’t think I’d so much as turned it on in about 2 years. It thought it was July 2023, and I had to manually set the date before the time would sync with Windows online and before it would check for updates. Installing the latter is pretty much what I’ve been doing all day.
It’s still running Windows 10, because it doesn’t meet the minimum system requirements for Windows 11. I have no idea what I want to do with it: the battery doesn’t hold much of a charge anymore so it has to be plugged in, and it’s not good for much beyond email/web surfing and MS Office (and watching/burning DVDs). Maybe I can give it to someone; I figure at the very least I can get the OS as current as possible. If I wind up keeping it, I’ll need to try to remember to update it more frequently than every couple of years.
Sincere thanks to everyone for the job congrats!
It’s really nice to know that now I can just chill for the rest of the month.
I’ll need to do some clothes shopping, though: I’ve worked from home full-time for the past five years, and I need stuff I can wear in the office. Somehow, I don’t think that sweatpants and whatever t-shirt I slept in will do the trick.
Plus sometimes there will be customer meetings in DC, and I’ll want to at least try to look like a grownup for those. I don’t have most of my pre-COVID work clothes anymore, because of weight loss due to bariatric surgery; I hadn’t gotten around to replacing that wardrobe yet, because I hadn’t needed to. I tend to wear the same 2-3 pairs of pants, so mostly I just need tops. I have a couple of Talbots gift cards from Christmas and my birthday: I’ll start there, maybe this Saturday. Kohl’s is on my list, too. I’ll get just a few things to start: enough to take me through the first week or so, and let me see how my boss and the others dress. WifeBFF is usually my clothes shopping guru, and she hates that she can’t go with me (she’s in rehab after a reverse shoulder replacement): I have orders to Facetime her from the dressing rooms. We’ll see.
At 5pm I have a kickoff meeting for a corporate program I was chosen to participate in: each year, they take ~40 project/program managers and spend nine months teaching them cybersecurity basics and prepping them for a certification. I had to ask to be submitted for consideration, and two days ago I learned that I was selected (another reason I’m glad I can stay with my company). There will be two 1-hour meetings each week for the rest of the year, plus independent study and exam prep. It’s specifically for managers without cybersecurity backgrounds who want to get smarter about that stuff (and the company’s plans/goals). Of course, when my new boss is back from vacation I’ll need to confirm that she doesn’t object to my participation: I gave the instructor a heads up about my situation, and he’s alright with me being tentative at the moment and attending today’s kickoff. This program might be a lot on top of the new job, but I’d really like to give it a go. If it becomes too much, though, I won’t hesitate to say so: I’m too old to work too hard.
I’ve paused work on the Batwing reassembly while I wait for some pieces to be delivered: the completed set had been hanging on my nephew’s bedroom wall, but got damaged when a massive tree fell on their roof last year. Some of the pieces weren’t ever recovered, and I’ve been ordering replacements as needed (using Lego points; I haven’t spent a dime yet). I won’t start building the Atari set until the Batwing is done, and the Ghostbusters HQ will wait until Atari is done. Depending on how long the Batwing pieces take to arrive – and how many other missing ones I discover – I might have enough Lego to get to me to Easter.
HA! I will have to share that with my cat-owning friends.
That’s one of the “cartridges” that comes with the set!
No judgment here: I love that stuff! Every now and then I’ll buy a small nukable cup of that flavor, but they’re never quite as good.
Indeed.
Right now it’s 72°F and sunny here.
I opened the windows a couple of hours ago. And with it being the vernal equinox and all, I think I might finally be ready to store the humidifers until next winter!
